'I can make an impact' – Brendan Taylor eyes international comeback after sanction ends

He had initially considered moving into coaching but has been convinced to resume playing with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup

Firdose Moonda21-Mar-2025Former Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor, currently serving a three-and-half-year ban for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code, is eyeing an international comeback when his sanction ends in July.Taylor, 39, had initially considered a move into coaching but has been convinced to resume his playing career by Zimbabwe Cricket’s MD Givemore Makoni, with a view to playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, which Zimbabwe will co-host. Taylor will be eligible to play again on July 25 this year.”I still want to play and I believe I could make an impact as a player,” Taylor told ESPNcricinfo. “I look at where I’m at physically and mentally and if I didn’t feel I could do it, I wouldn’t bother. Givemore has really supported me on this. He sort of shut down the coaching role for now and said, ‘Can you play and try to push yourself up until the 2027 World Cup?’ Granted I’ll be 41 then but with sobriety, I’m living my truest form.”Related

How Brendan Taylor got into a fix

Taylor banned for failing to report approach without delay

'I had willingly walked into a situation that has changed my life forever'

Taylor admitted to drug and alcohol addiction problem at the same time he revealed an approach by match-fixers to spot fix after they filmed him using cocaine. He was threatened with the video being made public if he did not cooperate with them. Instead of going through with the fix, Taylor abruptly retired from international cricket in September 2021 and did not reveal the reasons. He only reported the incident to the ICC four months later and made the story public in January 2022.At that point, Taylor also checked himself into a rehabilitation centre in Zimbabwe’s Nyanga region on the Mozambique border. He spent 90 days there, with one other patient and a sponsor who “showed me a new way to live”. He has since been clean and has started a private coaching facility at his home as well as, more recently, a gradual return to training. The conditions of his sanction mean Taylor cannot play any officially recognised cricket or train with domestic or international sides. Instead, he has been using facilities at an elite independent school, St John’s College in Harare, often twice a day.Brendan Taylor feels inspired by the likes of Sean Williams•Getty Images”They’ve got some great grass nets and I spend a lot of time in the indoor high-performance centre there. I get in there nice and early, and I come back in the afternoon and do it all again and push myself,” Taylor said. “There’s lots of work to do, but I feel like I’m there. I’m not far off. I’ve been doing some batting, and I need to incorporate some fielding and some keeping work because I’ve got four months to go.”Although “it would have been great to be able to”, Taylor will not be cleared to play by the time of Zimbabwe’s Test in England in May – their first against that opposition in more than two decades. But he hopes to be in the plans for a home series against New Zealand in August. That will be followed by Zimbabwe’s hosting of the Africa Regional Qualifiers for next year’s T20 World Cup in September, though Taylor feels he has some work to do on his T20 game, where he has a strike rate of 123.96. “I see myself definitely playing Tests and ODIs. With T20s, that’s probably something I would have to really try and sharpen myself up at. But I look forward to that.”

“Having a home World Cup is quite special and we’ve had some heartache over these last few World Cups so hopefully we can turn that around”

Should his comeback be successful, Taylor will be the fourth player in the Zimbabwe side in his late 30s, after Test and ODI captain Craig Ervine (39), T20I captain Sikandar Raza (38), and long-serving allrounder Sean Williams (also 38). It’s in watching their performances that Taylor has found the belief that he has something more to contribute.”That’s been inspiring to me. If you look statistically, they’re at the top of the game. They’re still some of the biggest contributors in the national side, and that’s really given me that hope and belief that I can do this,” he said. “And it’s also about me just adding real service to the group. It’s not an egotistical individual coming back trying to steal any headlines or anything like that. I’ve been humbled properly. I look forward to really just adding value, which I probably didn’t do to the best of my ability when I was there before.”Ultimately it’s the feeling of having unfinished business that is calling Taylor back to playing. “I wish I had offered a bit more to Zimbabwe cricket. I’ve apologised and moved forward from that and I want to work with them.”Taylor is also motivated by the idea of the home World Cup, especially as Zimbabwe have missed out on the last two ODI showpieces and he considers the 2015 tournament, where he was the fourth-highest run-scorer, the peak of his career.”Having a home World Cup is quite special and we’ve had some heartache over these last few World Cups so hopefully we can turn that around,” he said. ” The balance in our group is, I think, the best it has ever been and there’s a huge drive from Zimbabwe Cricket to get this right and get things in place. For Givemore, this World Cup means the whole world to him. He just wants to get this right and put on a good show and I want to be reciprocal in that.”

Saudi backers major Tottenham plan as Daniel Levy exit kickstarts restructure

Tottenham Hotspur waved goodbye to controversial chairman Daniel Levy after 24 years last week, in a move which sent shockwaves throughout the world of football.

Levy and ENIC’s running of the club during his tenure attracted large protests from supporters, mainly due to a lack of success on the field, with the Lilywhites winning just two major trophies over the ex-chair’s two-and-a half-decade-long spell.

However, away from the pitch, there is little denying that Levy transformed Spurs into a financial powerhouse.

Tottenham are now one of the world’s highest revenue-generating clubs, according to the Deloitte Money League, with Levy overseeing the move to their state of the art new stadium and training facilities.

Speaking after the “big news” of Levy’s departure, CEO Vinai Vinkatesham moved to quash rumours of a potential takeover whilst explaining what this means to the club’s overall running.

Credible reports suggest that influential footballing figures were left “stunned” by Levy’s resignation (Miguel Delaney), which was ultimately taken out of the 63-year-old’s hands.

In fact, The Times have stated that Levy was told to resign just hours before Tottenham made it official.

Saudi backers major plan for Tottenham as Levy exit kickstarts restructure

According to TEAMtalk, Levy’s departure is the first domino kickstarting what is a broad restructure of Spurs.

It is also claimed that global investors, including backers from Saudi Arabia, harbor an ambitious plan for Spurs to build a “Premier League powerhouse”, and see the club as a “prime opportunity” to do so.

While making it crystal clear that Spurs is not for sale, the Lewis family are open to minority investments that could help to inject significant capital into the club, with Saudi parties also joined by potential investors from Qatar and the USA.

A new era for Thomas Frank’s side appears to be ushering in, with insiders saying that an “air of change” is brewing within the club and Levy’s exit may not be the big off-field announcement poised to come in the near future.

Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg named England legend as his hero and wanted to be a footballer

Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg has revealed he grew up idolising an England great, who he “wanted to be like” back when he was playing.

Aberg burst onto the scene at the 2023 Ryder Cup, only three months after deciding to turn professional as a golfer, and the 25-year-old is now gearing up for the 2025 edition of the prestigious tournament, having established himself as a top player.

The Swede is now 14th in the world rankings, off the back of two PGA Tour wins, securing victories at the RSM Classic in November 2023, before going on to win the Genesis Invitational in February 2025.

The Team Europe member has clearly found his calling in golf, but he has revealed that football is another one of his passions, and he continues to regularly play the sport with his friends whenever he gets the chance.

Rory McIlroy named England legend as his greatest ever footballer – not Messi or Ronaldo

The Northern Irishman has named his favourite ever player.

ByDominic Lund Sep 3, 2025

Aberg said: “Football was actually my first pick for a long time. I still adore playing whenever I’m home, I still play with my buddies and I still watch a lot of football. But it was probably right around I was 15 when I first started playing golf a lot more.

“When I moved to high school, that’s when I stopped playing football. I missed it, it’s a cool sport, I still watch Liverpool as much as I can.”

Sweden'sLudvigAbergin action during a practice round

The golf sensation is indeed a huge Liverpool fan, and he named one of the club’s greatest ever players as his idol growing up.

Aberg and McIlroy will need to put aside football rivalries at Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy might have something to say about his teammate supporting Liverpool, given that he has previously revealed he was a Manchester United fan growing up, with the Northern Irishman idolising a different England legend – Wayne Rooney.

Football rivalries didn’t come between the teammates last time around, however, with Luke Donald captaining Europe to victory, and they will be hoping to make it two wins in a row when the 2025 edition starts on September 25th.

It is no surprise that Aberg named Gerrard as his hero growing up, given that the Liverpool legend won nearly everything there was to win at club level, while also proving himself as a big-game player, memorably scoring a last-minute screamer in the last minute of the 2006 FA Cup final.

Aberg will be hoping he can be just as influential later this month, and McIlroy certainly believes he has what it takes, saying after the 2023 edition: “He was absolutely incredible in the Ryder Cup. I keep saying to everyone, ‘I’m glad he’s European.’ I’m glad he’s on my team.”

Pep Guardiola takes angry swipe at ‘Spanish referees’ after Man City concede late penalty to Monaco in Champions League

Pep Guardiola was left furious after Manchester City were denied victory in Monaco as a controversial late penalty decision cost his side two Champions League points. The Catalan tactician refused to comment directly on the incident but took a swipe at 'Spanish referees' following another night of refereeing drama in Europe, which resulted in Eric Dier scoring a late penalty equaliser.

Man City held to draw in controversial circumstances

Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw by Monaco after conceding a late penalty in dramatic fashion. Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano awarded the spot-kick following a VAR review after Nico Gonzalez was judged to have made high contact with Dier inside the box. The decision sparked chaos on the sidelines, with red cards shown as tensions boiled over between both benches.

Guardiola made his frustration clear after the final whistle, refusing to discuss the referee but hinting at his displeasure. “Nothing to say to Spanish referees,” he said. “We played a really good game. Of course, we were close but at the end we could not defend the free-kick well and we conceded the penalty. In football you have to win with the result. If you analyse the game there were many things that were good. Step by step we will be better but we had many chances and many players played really good. We conceded almost nothing.”

Getty Images SportHaaland left furious after brace leads to a draw

The result extends City’s wait for an away win in Europe, their last coming exactly one year ago. Guardiola’s men dominated for large spells and twice struck the crossbar but were undone by one contentious call. Haaland's brace was left with just one point to show for it, and the Norwegian striker left the pitch in fury after the full-time whistle.

Man City look to fight back in the PL

Manchester City will look to bounce back when they return to Premier League action this weekend as they face Brentford. Guardiola’s side remain unbeaten in Europe but have now dropped to eighth on the Champions League table. The focus will shift toward rediscovering composure and ensuring refereeing drama does not derail their Champions League campaign.

Leeds eyeing £75k-p/w Premier League playmaker who's a lot like Buonanotte

Leeds United are pushing to complete some late deals in the window and could now be set to up the ante in pursuit of an exciting attacker who has been made available by his club, according to a report.

Leeds United looking to complete one or two more deals

Daniel Farke hasn’t been shy about emphasising that his side need to improve their squad to stand a chance of staying in the Premier League, and the German coach has let slip that there could be one or two more incomings at Elland Road before the close of play.

Speaking before his side take on Newcastle United, he stated when asked about further additions and outgoings: “I can confirm Largie (Ramazani) and Isaac (Schmidt) have been allowed to travel to talk with other clubs. Not confirmed yet but we expect this to happen.

Leeds United's Daniel James, manager DanielFarkeand Mateo Joseph

“It makes no sense to give you a percentage right now (on the amount of potential new arrivals), if one or two, we will see.”

With Kalvin Phillips potentially rejoining Leeds United, cover in midfield may now be on the horizon following injuries to Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu.

Vowing to find ‘solutions’ rather than wallowing over missing individuals, Getafe star Christantus Uche is also on the Whites’ radar after his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers stalled.

Better than Okafor: Leeds eye last-minute move to sign "unplayable" star

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing up a last-minute move to sign a star who is even better than Noah Okafor.

One victory in the top-flight coupled with a heavy defeat to Arsenal has left supporters feeling there is work still to be done, hammered home again by Leeds’ midweek EFL Cup exit to Sheffield Wednesday on penalties.

Nevertheless, help could be on the way in the next few days if reports are to be believed, which suggest that Farke could be presented with a golden chance to land a talented attacker.

Leeds United could look to secure Emiliano Buendia

According to Football Insider, Leeds are keen on Aston Villa star Emiliano Buendia after he was put up for sale to help the Villans balance their books in light of recent PSR concerns.

Pete O’Rourke stated on his situation: “Aston Villa would be willing to let [Buendia] move on, just to help their cash flow and balance the books.

“Let’s wait and see – Leeds United are in the market for a number 10, and Buendia would tick a lot of boxes. There’s also been interest from Stuttgart in Germany, and there will be a number of clubs looking at Buendia as a potential signing right up to the deadline.”

Intriguingly, Buendia and Leeds target Facundo Buonanotte, who now looks to be heading to Chelsea, are cited for their similarities as players. Both rank in the 99th percentile for wingers across Europe’s top five leagues in tackles per 90, suggesting Farke is keen to get a playmaker who can lead his press from the front.

Last term, the Argentina international spent time on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and registered two goals in 14 appearances, albeit he didn’t manage to produce his best form.

Labelled “fantastic” by Rio Ferdinand, Buendia, who earns £75,000 per week at Aston Villa, is someone who has shown his quality in the top-flight before and could provide the creative fusion needed to spice up Farke’s attacking areas.

"Very good" – Frank hails £7m-a-year star who wants permanent Tottenham transfer

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank hailed Joao Palhinha’s role as emergency centre-half and opening goalscorer in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Doncaster.

Palhinha’s improvised strike, a Jay McGrath own goal and Brennan Johnson’s stoppage-time breakaway comfortably disposed of League One Rovers.

Frank hails Tottenham star Palhinha

On-loan Portuguese midfielder Palhinha, who picks £7m per year, wants to seal a permanent move to north London in 2026. He stepped into an injury-hit back-line while Archie Gray, often forced to play auxiliary centre-back under previous boss Ange Postecoglou, took his preferred midfield role.

“Archie can play centre-back and right-back but I see him as a midfielder and I like to see him there.”

Spurs would have scored more but for two remarkable air shots from Mathys Tel from only six yards out. Tel has yet to find the net since making a permanent switch to north London this summer but Frank said: “I don’t think he’s having a bad run.

“I think it was a step up in terms of performance. He got into good situations.”

"Goes under the radar" – Tottenham told "important" Frank star deserves far more credit

He goes largely unnoticed.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 24, 2025

Spurs went ahead in the 14th minute after Rovers goalkeeper Ian Lawlor missed his punch at a corner.

Sean Grehan headed the loose ball off the line but only as far as Palhinha, who hooked an overhead kick back over the defender and into an empty net.

Spurs doubled their lead three minutes later when Wilson Odobert raided down the left and sent in another low cross. Doncaster defender McGrath was unable to sort his feet out in time and succeeded only in bundling the ball into his own net.

Rovers almost pulled one back before the break when Owen Bailey’s Paolo Di Canio-style volley was tipped onto a post by Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky.

That was the only moment of mild peril Spurs faced, however, and Frank was able to shuffle his pack by sending on Lucas Bergvall and Richarlison for the final 30 minutes as well as handing a late debut to 16-year-old Luca Williams-Barnett.

Johnson wrapped things up in stoppage time after being sent racing through on goal by Bergvall.

Rovers boss Grant McCann said: “I was disappointed with the goals we conceded.

“I don’t think we made it hard for them to score against us but in between that, especially in the second half, it was an excellent performance.”

After Donovan: Rodgers can ditch Hatate for 18-year-old Celtic sensation

Celtic secured their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Sunday with a fantastic 4-0 win over Partick Thistle away from Parkhead at Firhill.

The Hoops strolled to a comfortable victory against the second tier outfit, who have not been in the Scottish Premiership in seven years, with four different goalscorers.

Hyun-jun Yang, Liam Scales, Sebastian Tounekti, and Luke McCowan all got their names on the scoresheet, and Tounekti was particularly impressive again.

The summer signing from Hammarby caught the eye against Kilmarnock, creating four chances (per Sofascore), and played an important role in the first goal against Partick Thistle with his pass for Benjamin Nygren, before going on to score his first goal for the club.

Brendan Rodgers will hope that the comfortable win will provide his squad with the confidence that they need to hit the ground running in the Europa League against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday night.

One Celtic player who needs to step up on the pitch in the coming weeks after a string of unimpressive displays is central midfielder Reo Hatate.

Why Reo Hatate needs to step up for Celtic

The Japan international put in a decent showing against Partick Thistle, a Championship outfit, but it was not a mesmerising performance that made up for some of his recent outings.

Hatate’s form has not been up to the standards that he has set himself throughout his Celtic career, particularly with his displays in the Champions League qualifier clashes against Kairat.

The Hoops failed to qualify for the league phase of the competition, losing on penalties after two 0-0 draws, and the midfielder’s lack of contributions in and out of possession played a part in that.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate was far too wasteful with the ball at his feet and weak off the ball, losing the majority of his duels, across the two matches.

The 27-year-old star also failed to score a goal or create a ‘big chance’ for the team in his last two appearances in the Scottish Premiership for the Hoops, which shows that he has struggled in recent weeks outside of his showing against a lower tier opponent.

Hatate scored ten goals, including the one in the clip above, and created 14 ‘big chances’ for his teammates in the Premiership in the 2024/25 campaign, per Sofascore, but he has been unable to deliver the same level of consistency in the final third this term.

This is why the Japan international needs to step up for the Scottish giants, because he is capable of being an exceptional performer for the club in the middle of the park with his ability at the top end of the pitch.

If Hatate is unable to recapture the form that his output last season proved he is capable of, Rodgers must consider removing him from the starting XI for a period of time.

The emergence of Colby Donovan, who has started the last two matches at right-back, shows that the manager is willing to provide academy talent with a chance if they are ready to be thrown in.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

With this in mind, Rodgers could find the next version of Donovan, who has been a solid performer in the last two matches with his defensive reliability and composure in possession, by unleashing Sean McArdle to replace Hatate in the XI.

Why Sean McArdle could replace Reo Hatate for Celtic

Of course, the manager does have club-record signing Arne Engels, who joined for £11m from Augsburg last summer, Luke McCowan, and Paulo Bernardo also at his disposal to select in midfield.

However, the minor success of Donovan, who won five of his nine duels and had 101 touches (per Sofascore) against Kilmarnock, could inspire the head coach to look to the academy once again.

McArdle is not a complete stranger to first-team football at Parkhead. Rodgers rewarded his strong form for the B team with two appearances for the senior side in the Premiership towards the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 18-year-old star made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old against Hibernian in the Premiership, playing eight minutes off the bench in a 3-1 win.

As the manager said in the clip above, the young sensation earned his chance through his form for the B team, and it is down to him to take the next step in his career.

McArdle, who Rodgers claimed has “got a wee edge to him”, then played a second match against Aberdeen, again off the bench, and showed promising signs in both outings.

As you can see in the table above, the teenage whiz only lost possession twice in those 17 minutes, plus stoppage time, of football, whilst creating one chance for the side.

McArdle’s form at youth team level for Celtic also suggests that he can provide the goal threat that Hatate offers at his best, with seven goals in 53 matches, per Transfermarkt.

The Scottish starlet has scored in both of his appearances in the Challenge Cup this season, per Sofascore, including one against Alloa Athletic earlier this month.

These statistics show that he can provide a threat at the top end of the pitch to go along with his composure in possession, as evidenced by his pass accuracy in his first two first-team outings.

He was not phased by the occasion against Hibernian or Aberdeen, showing his class on the ball in both games, and this suggests that he has the mentality to take that next step to be Donovan 2.0 this season.

As good as Tounekti: 7/10 Celtic star is now a player "to be excited about"

This Celtic star was as good as Sebastian Tounekti in the comfortable win over Partick Thistle.

ByDan Emery Sep 21, 2025

It is now down to Rodgers to provide McArdle with that opportunity to impress once again to see if he can emerge as a genuine alternative to Hatate, who has been a shadow of himself of late.

Klopp had the original Ngumoha but he's not played for Liverpool in 18 months

Liverpool are enjoying the fruits of a bold transfer window while simultaneously trusting in their academy.

Under Arne Slot, the Reds have seamlessly balanced blockbuster arrivals with the promotion of youth talent, echoing the philosophy that served them well under Jürgen Klopp.

The summer business was headline-grabbing.

Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a British-record £116m fee, only for Alexander Isak to eclipse that figure with his £125m move from Newcastle on deadline day.

Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Geovani Leoni and Hugo Ekitike also arrived, while Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez and Jarell Quansah were among those to depart.

Despite those upheavals, Liverpool began their Premier League defence with three straight wins – 4-2 at home to Bournemouth, 3-2 away at Newcastle, and 1-0 against Arsenal at Anfield.

Slot has rotated his stars while showing a willingness to reward academy prospects. Against Newcastle, that faith paid off spectacularly when a debutant stole the headlines.

Rio Ngumoha: A star Rises

Rio Ngumoha had been on Liverpool’s radar for months before his 2024 switch from Chelsea’s academy, but few predicted the immediate impact he would make.

Introduced in the 96th minute at St James’ Park, the then 16-year-old marked his Premier League debut by scoring in the 100th minute – becoming the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history.

Now 17, Ngumoha is regarded as one of England’s brightest talents.

A skilful and creative forward, he combines flair with composure beyond his years. His market value, via Transfermarkt, already stands at €10m (£8m), reflecting his rising reputation.

The England youth international had been gradually integrated into senior training last season, appearing on the bench in an EFL Cup tie against Southampton before making his professional debut in January’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley.

That appearance made him the youngest Liverpool player to start a first-team game, and the youngest to feature in the competition for the Reds.

Ngumoha’s rapid ascent has naturally drawn comparisons with other academy graduates who once carried a similar weight of expectation.

For Liverpool, there is a recent example that provides both inspiration and caution.

Liverpool's original Ngumoha

Kaide Gordon was once Liverpool’s golden boy, described by Klopp as a “special talent.”

Signed from Derby County in 2021 for £1m, he was earmarked for a swift breakthrough.

The right-winger wasted little time making an impression, debuting in an EFL Cup win at Norwich and scoring his first senior goal against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.

A Premier League debut soon followed in 2022, and Gordon looked set to carve out a long-term role in Liverpool’s attack.

But progress stalled. Persistent injuries disrupted his momentum and halted his development at a crucial stage.

Last season brought loan spells at Portsmouth and Norwich in the Championship, intended to reignite his trajectory having not played in the Slot era to date. In fact, he’s not been seen in Liverpool red for 18 months.

While those experiences offered game time, they also highlighted the gulf between potential and consistency.

Gordon was linked with another temporary move this summer, but a deal failed to materialise, leaving him to fight for minutes at Anfield.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Now 20, Gordon’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of academy prospects. For every breakthrough like Ngumoha, there are setbacks like Gordon’s. The path from prodigy to first-team regular is rarely linear.

That juxtaposition makes Ngumoha’s situation fascinating. The youngster’s debut winner has elevated him into the spotlight, but Liverpool will be keen to manage his development carefully, avoiding the pitfalls that befell Gordon.

With Slot’s track record of nurturing talent, there is optimism that Ngumoha can continue his upward curve without being burdened by premature expectation.

Ngumoha may be Liverpool’s present and future, but his progression must be handled with care.

The contrast with Gordon illustrates both the opportunity and the risk of investing in youth.

For Slot, the challenge is to integrate Ngumoha while continuing Liverpool’s title defence – a delicate balancing act that could shape the club’s future as much as its present.

Not Ngumoha: Liverpool's exciting 17-year-old could become the next Isak

Liverpool have refined every level of their squad this summer, from youth to senior standard.
