VIDEO: Virgil van Dijk or William Saliba?! Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand ranks Premier League's best centre-backs as he talks up Leny Yoro's huge potential

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has put his cards on the table, ranking the Premier League’s top defenders in a no-nonsense knockout showdown, and his verdicts will spark plenty of debate. In a high-energy Q&A with GOAL, the former England skipper was asked to play “winner stays on” with some of the league’s biggest centre-back names.

Getty Images SportFerdinand plays winner-stays-on game

Right from the start, Ferdinand showed where his loyalties lie, immediately backing teenage sensation Lenny Yoro over Jarrad Branthwaite. From there, the United starlet held his ground against the likes of Marc Guehi and Levi Colwill. Ferdinand raved about the Frenchman’s potential, insisting Yoro has “the highest ceiling” of the bunch.

Despite the glowing praise, Yoro’s run came to an end when Josko Gvardiol was put in the mix. Ferdinand admitted the Croatian is further along right now, though he still believes Yoro could one day eclipse him.

He said: "I think Leny Yoro has got a higher ceiling long term, but I think I'm going to go Gvardiol right now."

Once in play, the Manchester City man proved tough to dislodge. He beat out Nikola Milenkovic, Newcastle’s Sven Botman, Cristian Romero of Spurs, and even United’s own Lisandro Martinez.

AdvertisementVan Dijk still stands tallest

Eventually, Arsenal’s Gabriel was the one who brought Gvardiol’s streak to a halt. Ferdinand praised the Brazilian’s commanding presence and his strong recent form. When Gabriel was then stacked up against Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, the Arsenal defender still got the nod.

But when the conversation moved to Gabriel’s defensive partner, William Saliba, Ferdinand’s admiration was clear. “I prefer the type of player Saliba is,” he explained. “But I think they're both, they're the best partnership for me."

However, when Saliba was pitted against Virgil van Dijk, Ferdinand’s verdict was decisive. The Liverpool skipper came out on top without hesitation. “Van Dijk’s the best,” the United legend declared.

AFPVan Dijk proving it on the pitch

The Dutch colossus has certainly been backing up that praise with performances. Just last week, Van Dijk sent Anfield into ecstasy with a dramatic last-minute winner against Atletico Madrid in a Champions League classic as Liverpool edged the Spaniards 3-2 in a pulsating tie that reminded everyone of Van Dijk’s big-game presence. Manager Arne Slot gave his captain a breather in midweek, resting him for the 2-1 EFL Cup win over Southampton. But there’s no doubt the Dutchman will be back in the thick of it when the Reds travel to Selhurst Park this Saturday to face Crystal Palace.

Revealed: Man Utd considered appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before hiring Ruben Amorim

Manchester United reportedly considered appointing former coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before they hired Ruben Amorim last November. The Portuguese coach was brought in from Sporting CP as United parted ways with Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the 2024-25 campaign. Solskjaer managed the Red Devils for three years before being dismissed in November 2021.

  • Man Utd considered bringing back Solskjaer after Ten Hag's sacking

United parted ways with Ten Hag in October 2024 and replaced the Dutchman with Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP. However, according to , the Red Devils hierarchy had considered bringing back club legend and former coach Solskjaer to take up the manager's role once again if Amorim was unattainable.

    Amorim's nightmare United spell continues

Amorim's spell at Old Trafford has not gone as planned, as the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. In the new season, United have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup second round by Grimsby Town and are currently 14th in the league, with just two wins from their first six matches.

  • Amorim's future at United under scanner

After United made a disappointing start to the new season, despite spending heavily in the transfer window, Amorim's future at Old Trafford has come under scrutiny, with many experts suggesting the club should part ways with the 40-year-old. Even former England boss Sir Gareth Southgate has also been tipped to replace the Portuguese.

Solskjaer without a job at the moment

Solskjaer was relieved of his duties as Besiktas manager after the Turkish Super Lig giants crashed out of the Conference League play-offs in August. The Norwegian coach, who joined Besiktas in January 2025, arrived on a one-and-a-half-year deal but lasted only eight months in the role.

DCL's perfect player: Leeds must rue selling "unplayable" Harrison upgrade

Leeds United’s struggling attack is very much a work in progress currently.

While the defence has been largely solid since making the nervy step-up back to the Premier League, with another clean sheet nearly collected away at Fulham, the forward areas have looked consistently below-par, scoring just once from their opening four clashes.

Daniel Farke will be ripping his hair out at the moment, trying to work out a successful attacking formula, having masterminded an incredible promotion just last season that saw 95 goals fired home.

The German does have some promising new attackers at his disposal, but it looks as if it will take time to get them to their best, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in particular, enduring a tough start to life in West Yorkshire.

Calvert-Lewin's tough start at Leeds

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Calvert-Lewin entered the building late in the busy summer transfer window as Leeds’ standout striker signing.

After all, the injury-prone former Everton marksman would join on a free transfer, with alternative faces in attack such as Noah Okafor arriving with plenty more positive fanfare, having cost a whopping £18m to obtain.

Still, irrespective of the costs involved in their respective deals, both players visibly struggled at Craven Cottage, with a calamitous own-goal ultimately the difference-maker.

Indeed, Okafor would fail to impress on his first Premier League start, failing to complete an accurate cross for the lofty Calvert-Lewin to try and connect with. On top of that, the quiet Swiss also failed to hit a single shot on target at Bernd Leno’s goal.

The numbers aren’t any prettier when assessing the Sheffield-born striker, either, with the low-on-confidence number nine only managing a meagre 15 touches of the ball as an isolated figure in Farke’s forward line.

The manager will just be praying that the 28-year-old gets the service he needs shortly to break out of his poor start, with the former England international boasting 71 goals in the top-flight when brimming with confidence.

Wolverhampton Wanderers up next might well be the occasion where Calvert-Lewin finally shows up.

Yet, in an alternate reality, the ex-Toffees centre-forward would already be up and running in Leeds white.

Leeds have sold a player who's perfect for Calvert-Lewin

Away from Okafor, Farke does have a lot of options up his sleeve down the wings, with Daniel James, Wilfried Gnonto, and Jack Harrison all being thrown into the action late on at Craven Cottage.

The last of those listed does feel as if he is on borrowed time at Leeds, though, with the hit-and-miss Englishman only averaging 21 minutes of action this season in the league when used sparingly.

Jake O'Brien and Jack Harrison in action

Even more worryingly, Harrison finds himself without a goal or assist in Premier League action since scoring last March for Calvert-Lewin’s ex-employers, with Leeds now wishing they had Jack Clarke back at their disposal in a dream reality to help the below-par attackers out.

When Clarke’s name springs to mind, he is certainly more synonymous for his blistering exploits with Sunderland than with Leeds, with 28 goals and 23 assists coming his way for the Black Cats after struggling to ever settle at Tottenham Hotspur immediately after ditching Elland Road.

Thankfully, the right-footed forward did show off his explosiveness in the Premier League last season with Ipswich Town.

An “unplayable” star in the words of Tony Mowbray, the attacker may well have been worried that he’d just be pigeonholed in the Championship.

However, he did show flashes of his excellence in Suffolk last campaign to suggest he could be a Premier League-level talent moving forward, with four assists coming his way from just 12 starts under Kieran McKenna. One of those assists also saw him compared to a £100m player, with Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith suggesting he “has a bit of Grealish about him.”

This split-second ability to be able to fashion a chance for a teammate would be music to the ears of an isolated Calvert-Lewin, with the hot-and-cold Englishman content with minimal touches of the ball before being unleashed in front of goal.

At his peak in 2020/21, he averaged just 34.7 touches per league match, which still ended up with him picking up an impressive 16 strikes.

Clarke succeeding as an impact substitute option also suggests he would be an upgrade on a forgettable Harrison if he were back at Elland Road.

Away from all these theoretical conversations, though, the ex-Norwich City boss will just have to make do with what he’s got until January at the very earliest, with the attack hopefully having clicked by that vital mid-point.

Leeds messed up selling James & Gnonto upgrade who'd solve Farke's big issues

A star sold by Leeds United last year would solve the club’s current attacking problems as an upgrade on Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto.

Gary Neville: £50m+ Arsenal star looks completely transformed this season

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has weighed in on the performances of one Arsenal player who’s looked transformed so far this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side are finally back in action this weekend now that the often-dreaded international break is done and dusted, with the Premier League title hopefuls set to take on Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s early kick off.

Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus will all miss the clash with long-term injuries, but Christian Norgaard and Ben White could return to the fold after they were both spotted in first-team training this week.

Meanwhile, Arteta has been boosted by the imminent return of star defender William Saliba, with the Spaniard confirming that he is actually in contention to play against Forest despite being forced off against Liverpool with an ankle problem.

Nothing but three points will do for Arsenal after their pre-international break defeat at Anfield, and it supporters will be keen to see how winger Noni Madueke continues his fine start to life at the Emirates Stadium.

Signing from Chelsea this summer in a deal potentially rising to £52 million, the England winger has hit the ground running at both club and international level – scoring his first Three Lions goal after an excellent solo run in their 5-0 win over Serbia.

Madueke was arguably Arsenal’s best player against Liverpool too, with the player’s private individual coach, Isaksson-Hurst, saying Arteta has a “very direct” and “very dangerous” asset at his disposal.

Neville has also been very impressed with Madueke, as he explained on an episode of the Stick to Football podcast.

Gary Neville heaps praise on Noni Madueke at Arsenal

The former Man United defender said that Madueke has looked completely transformed since joining Arsenal, telling his fellow podcast guests that the ex-PSV Eindhoven forward has carried himself completely differently when compared to his Stamford Bridge days.

The 23-year-old is still yet to grab his first goal or assist under Arteta, but Forest’s trip to north London represents a prime opportunity to do so as the visitors begin to find their feet under a brand-new manager.

Even better than Breum: Celtic set to make offer for "flamboyant" £5m star

Celtic are reportedly closing in on making their first addition to their ranks on the flanks with the signing of Belgian star Michel-Ange Balikwisha this week.

Sky Sports reports that a fee of £5m has been agreed between the two clubs and that a medical will take place later this week before the move is rubber-stamped and made official.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha in action for Royal Antwerp.

Brendan Rodgers made it clear earlier this month that he wants the board to bolster his attack with more signings before the window slams shut at the start of next month.

The Hoops boss said: “The squad will hopefully look again different come the end of the window. I think it’s very clear. We need to improve in the front end of the pitch. The attacking department has always, and always will be, the strengths of my teams. We’ve lost important players in that area, and we need to replace players in that area.”

Nicolas Kuhn left to join Como earlier this summer and Jota is due to be out until the turn of the year with an ACL injury, though, which means that Celtic may need more signings than just Balikwisha.

One other option they have been linked with in the attacking midfield positions is Go Ahead Eagles forward Jakob Breum, who could bolster their options out wide.

What Jakob Breum could bring to Celtic

The Denmark U21 international would be an interesting signing for the Hoops, if they are still keen on him, because he is not a typical out-and-out wide player.

Per Transfermarkt, 23 of his 29 starts in the 2024/25 campaign came as an attacking midfielder, with the other six on the left wing. This suggests that his best role in a Rodgers system may be as one of the central midfielders ahead of Callum McGregor, rather than as an out-and-out winger.

Benjamin Nygren

Benjamin Nygren, for example, played wide and centrally during his time in Denmark, but has mainly operated as a central midfielder, tasked with scoring and creating goals in central areas, since his move to Parkhead.

Therefore, Breum could arrive at Parkhead as a player who is more likely to impact games as one of the three in midfield than as an out-and-out winger as a replacement for Daizen Maeda, James Forrest, or Hyun-jun Yang.

As you can see in the table above, the Danish attacker performed well as a number ten for Go Ahead Eagles as an efficient finisher who also offered decent creativity at times.

However, Celtic seem to need more of an out-and-out right winger, with Balikwisha coming in on the left, than a number ten option to play over Reo Hatate or Nygren.

It should not be a surprise, therefore, to learn that the Scottish Premiership giants are reportedly looking to bring a natural right winger to the club.

Celtic set to bid for Dutch star

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Celtic are preparing to submit an offer to sign Feyenoord forward Calvin Stengs before the end of the summer transfer window.

Speaking on Football Insider’s podcast, the reporter said: “Stengs is a player that has emerged on Celtic’s radar – he had a difficult season for Feyenoord, a few injury problems, so that may be a concern for Celtic. He’s into the final two years of his contract with Feyenoord, so could be available for a cut-price fee this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

“Celtic are looking at that, seeing there could be real potential to land a former Dutch international for a relatively small fee with a bid imminent.”

O’Rourke has not revealed how much it would take to snap the Feyenoord star up, but it was reported earlier this month that a fee of around £5m could be enough to get a deal done.

It now remains to be seen whether or not this “imminent” bid from the Hoops will be enough to convince the Dutch side to part ways with the left-footed star before the deadline.

Why Celtic should sign Calvin Stengs

The Premiership champions should do everything in their power to ensure that their bid is enough to secure a deal for Stengs because he could be a much-needed addition to the team.

As aforementioned, Celtic do not need a player of Breum’s profile as much as they need a right winger, due to the current make-up of the squad, which is why the Feyenoord ace could be an even better signing for the Hoops this summer.

The 26-year-old dynamo, who scored against Celtic in the Champions League in 2023, could come in as the best option on the right flank ahead of Forrest and Yang, whilst Breum would just be one of a number of decent options in the attacking midfield roles.

Stengs missed 35 games through injury in the 2024/25 campaign, per Transfermarkt, which meant that he was unable to showcase the best of his abilities at the top end of the park last season.

However, the right-sided attacker’s form in the Eredivisie during the 2023/24 campaign, when he was fit for the majority of the season, suggests that he has the quality to be a terrific signing for Celtic.

As you can see in the table above, Stengs was directly involved in 18 goals, more than Breum’s 15 in the Eredivisie last term, in 29 games for Feyenoord.

The Netherlands international, who was described as a “flamboyant” winger by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is a winger who can provide a huge threat as a creator whilst also finishing chances at an efficient rate.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

Yang and Forrest have scored six goals between them in the Premiership since the start of last season, which speaks to their lack of output in the final third, and that is why it is important for the Hoops to bring in a right-sided attacker before the window closes.

Stengs appears to be a player who suits what Celtic need, positionally and quality-wise, and could be a much better signing than Breum, due to his superior numbers in the Eredivisie and his better fit within the current squad.

Moyes must boldly axe "magic" Everton star who's worth more than Ndiaye

Everton have approached the 2025/26 season with a clear strategy, blending summer acquisitions with tactical continuity.

The Toffees began the campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Elland Road but bounced back strongly with a 2-0 home win against Brighton, followed by a 3-2 victory at Molineux.

This start has provided early optimism for supporters, especially given the major changes in the squad over the summer.

David Moyes oversaw the departure of several key figures, including Ashley Young, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, which opened opportunities for new arrivals.

The club welcomed a mixture of youth and experience, signing Thierno Barry from Villareal, Jack Grealish from Manchester City, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea, and Tyler Dibling from Southampton.

Grealish, in particular, has made an immediate impact, registering four assists so far, demonstrating that Everton’s summer business could already be paying dividends.

Amid these high-profile arrivals, one player quietly making waves is Senegalese winger Iliman Ndiaye, whose early-season form has been vital for the Toffees’ attacking strategy.

Ndiaye’s start to the season

Ndiaye, 25, joined Everton in 2024 from Marseille and has quickly emerged as a versatile attacking threat.

Primarily deployed as a left-winger, Ndiaye is also capable of playing as a centre-forward or attacking midfielder.

Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrates with Everton goalscorer Ndiaye against Southampton.

Last season, he contributed nine goals in 33 Premier League appearances, demonstrating an impressive mix of goal-scoring and creative play.

This season, Ndiaye has continued that trend, scoring against Brighton at home and Wolves away.

In the match against Wolves, he recorded 51 touches, completed 22 of 33 passes (70% accuracy), and registered two key passes, as per Sofascore, contributing significantly to Everton’s attacking rhythm.

His 2024/25 metrics underline his all-round impact: nine goal involvements, 3.19 progressive carries per 90, 3.07 progressive passes per 90, and a pass completion rate of 81.8%, as per FBref.

Ndiaye also averaged 0.56 shots on target per 90 with a 42.9% shot-on-target accuracy, generated 2.41 shot-creating actions per 90, and completed 47.6% of take-ons successfully.

These statistics highlight Ndiaye’s dual role as both a goal-scoring outlet and a creative link in the midfield, a player capable of influencing matches in multiple ways.

His versatility is particularly valuable given the club’s summer signings, which have intensified competition for attacking positions.

Ndiaye’s ability to adapt to multiple roles will be critical as Everton seek to maintain consistency and compete effectively in the Premier League.

How Dwight McNeil's value compares to Ndiaye

While Ndiaye has made an encouraging start, the arrivals of Grealish, Dewsbury-Hall, and Dibling inevitably impact other squad members, particularly Dwight McNeil.

Dwight McNeil in action for Everton

McNeil, also 25, joined Everton from Burnley in 2022, while last season, he made 21 league appearances, scoring four goals and registering eight assists, highlighting his ability to contribute both offensively and creatively.

However, McNeil’s game time is likely to be restricted this season due to the new signings.

In the first three league fixtures, he has made only a single appearance, a significant reduction compared to his prior role under Sean Dyche, where he was pivotal in helping Everton maintain their Premier League status.

Despite this, journalist Joe Thomas described him as “magic,” reflecting his vision, creativity, and ability to influence the game in key moments.

Statistically, McNeil’s 2024/25 season showcased his overall contribution.

These figures illustrate his ability to link play, drive forward from wide areas, and create scoring opportunities for teammates.

While his minutes may be limited in the short term, McNeil remains a valuable asset who can impact matches off the bench or step into the starting lineup when rotation is required. That said, he is no longer a guaranteed starter.

Dwight McNeil

Ndiaye’s early-season form, meanwhile, demonstrates his growing importance to the team, contributing goals, assists, and creative influence. Interestingly, however, it is actually McNeil who is deemed to be the more valuable asset (£22m vs £19m), as per Transfermarkt.

With Moyes’ new-look side taking shape though, it may well be McNeil who falls victim of this wave of exciting incomings.

Henriques announces retirement from first-class cricket

He had not featured in the Sheffield Shield since early November and had decided before Christmas to call time

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Mar-2025New South Wales captain Moises Henriques has announced his retirement from first-class cricket having stepped away from the format part way through the 2024-25 season.Henriques, 38, who played four Tests for Australia, will remain available for NSW in the One-Day Cup and has one season remaining on his current deal with Sydney Sixers who he also captains.Henriques did not feature for NSW in the Sheffield Shield since early November with Jack Edwards, who had been named the one-day captain ahead of the season, leading the side for the remainder of the campaign where NSW pushed for a place in the Shield final before finishing fourth.”I pretty much made my mind up before Christmas this year that it was time for me to stop playing Sheffield Shield cricket,” Henriques said “It was an honour to be able to lead and play for this state for so long, but playing for NSW means leading not only through words and preparation but also performances.”My body was still able, even at this ripe old age, but I just wasn’t leading by winning games of cricket for my state in the longer format of the game which I believe you have to do at this age.”We have a terrific group of younger players that will take over and move this great state forward and I will watch on with keen eyes. I’d love to thank them for providing me an environment to love going to work in.”Overall in first-class cricket Henriques made 6830 runs at 34.84 including 13 centuries and claimed 127 wickets at 30.75.As an emerging player he was touted as a future star for Australia and made 68 and 81 not out on his Test debut against India in Chennai in 2013 but did not reach double figures in his next three matches, two more against India and one against Sri Lanka in 2016.”I leave the team in great hands with Jack Edwards who took over and has showed such strong leadership already so early in his career,” Henriques said.”I want to thank Cricket NSW for their ongoing support. I’ve been a part of this organisation since I was 17 and they’ve helped me every step of the way. Twenty-one years on now, I hope to still offer my best in the shorter formats and will continue to do what I can to give back to this game that has given me so much.”New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd paid tribute to the impact Henriques has made on and off the field.”What Moises has been able to bring to NSW on the field is well documented, but it should also be recognised what he has brought to the Blues off the field over so many years,” Shipperd said.”He is the consummate professional and leader and cricket in NSW is far greater for Moises’ contribution. We saw this year in the One-Day Cup and during the BBL that he still has plenty to give, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Moises.”
