Man Utd now open talks to sign £52m midfielder who's "out of this world"

Manchester United have now opened talks to sign a £52m midfielder who’s “out of this world”, with Ruben Amorim identifying him as one of his top targets, according to a report.

Neville urges Man Utd to sign new midfielder

The rebuild is well underway at Man United, with Matheus Cunha becoming the first major signing of the summer, while they remain in the running for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, but Gary Neville believes several other signings will be necessary.

The United legend said: “It needs a big overhaul in the summer. Five or six players minimum to be able to change the direction of how he wants to play. There’s at least two forwards, a central midfield player, definitely two wing backs and another centre-back. They need six players minimum.”

The Red Devils are now closing in on a new central midfielder, with a deal for Valencia’s Javi Guerra thought to be edging closer to completion, while they have also stepped up their pursuit of a Serie A star.

Man Utd now set to accelerate talks to sign "fantastic" £35m forward

The Red Devils’ pursuit of a centre-forward is expected to move quickly.

1 ByDominic Lund Jul 8, 2025

That is according to a report from GOAL (via Football Transfers), which states that Man United have now opened talks over a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, having been identified as one of Amorim’s top targets.

The central midfielder is highly sought-after, with AC Milan and Juventus submitting enquiries of their own, while he also has plenty of admirers from within the Premier League, including Arsenal, Newcastle United and Chelsea.

None of the aforementioned English clubs are expected to make moves, however, potentially opening the door for a move to Old Trafford, but a deal is unlikely to be cheap, with the Italian club setting an asking price of €60m (£52m).

Ederson could take Man Utd's midfield to next level

Former England boss Fabio Capello was left extremely impressed by the Brazilian’s performances last season, saying: “He is out of this world for his ability to combine running, physicality, technique and intelligence”.

Atalanta's Ederson in action

Central midfield has been a real problem position for the Red Devils in recent times, with Manuel Ugarte’s struggles since arriving at Old Trafford well-documented, while Jamie Carragher infamously suggested Casemiro is finished at the top level.

With the former Real Madrid man now 33-years-old, it is clear that Amorim needs to bring in a long-term replacement, and the Atalanta star could be a solid option, having been dubbed a “machine” in midfield by journalist Carlo Garganese.

Ederson could be a fantastic signing for Man United this summer, and it is a boost that Arsenal, Newcastle and Chelsea aren’t expected to make approaches, given that the propsect of playing in the Champions League could appeal to the Brazil international.

Harry Moore ices Derbyshire chase after Anuj Dal's brilliant 115

Anuj Dal blasted a brilliant century as Derbyshire took over as Group A leaders with a thrilling one-wicket Metro Bank One-Day Cup victory over Somerset at Taunton. The hosts posted 316 for 5 after losing the toss, skipper Sean Dickson lashing 86 off 64 balls, with 8 fours and 3 sixes. James Rew hit 88, Andy Umeed 58 and Josh Thomas 54 not out. Zak Chappell claimed 3 for 54.Derbyshire’s reply of 317 for nine centred on the middle order efforts of Dal, who struck a brilliant 115 off 75 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes, and David Lloyd (71). Seventeen-year-old Harry Moore saw them home with ten balls to spare, scoring 36 not out, while George Thomas returned 3 for 41, also a List A career-best.Moore had previously amassed just ten runs in three List A innings, but the youngster eclipsed that with five fours and a six in a match-winning 20-ball cameo. After Chappell and Sam Conners had removed George Thomas and Lewis Goldsworthy respectively in the opening four overs of the game, Rew and Umeed rode some early luck to compile their second three-figure stand in this season’s Metro Bank Cup, both reaching half-centuries in the 24th over, Umeed off 62 balls and Rew off 66.Umeed fell with the total on 141, caught at short cover off legspinner Mitch Wagstaff. Rew followed with 40 more runs added, pouched at fine leg top-edging a pull shot off Chappell, knowing that the foundation had been laid for a late assault.James Rew top-scored for the home side with 88•Getty Images

It came from Dickson and Josh Thomas as Somerset plundered 89 off the last seven overs, Dickson moving to a 51-ball half-century and then clearing the ropes off Conners twice and once off Harry Moore, whose ninth over went for 22.Dickson fell to Chappell, but Thomas continued the rampage, hoisting the last ball of the innings, a free hit off Conners, over long-off for six to reach a 41-ball fifty.Reece ensured a rapid start to the visitors’ reply, smashing 6 fours off the first two overs sent down by Charlie Cassell. Harry Came helped take the score to 60 before being pinned lbw by George Thomas off the final ball of the ten-over powerplay.Thomas picked up a second wicket when Brooke Guest, on 15, edged a catch behind. Then Lloyd called for a quick single after playing a ball from Thomas to cover and Reece, on 44, failed to beat Umeed’s fast throw to wicketkeeper Rew.Matt Lamb was bowled by Jack Leach looking to make room to force through the off-side and Derbyshire were suddenly 89 for 4. That became 90 for five when Samit Patel offered a return catch to Thomas, who flung out a left hand to grab the sharp chance.Lloyd and Dal gave Derbyshire hope with a sixth-wicket stand of 145, both reaching half-centuries in the 33rd over, Dal first off 36 balls and Lloyd off the next delivery from Leach, off 53. The next over saw their century partnership off 82 deliveries.Despite having two England spinners in Leach and Shoaib Bashir bowling in tandem for the first time, Somerset were unable to stem the flow of runs. It took the return of seamer Josh Davey to break the partnership when Lloyd reverse-swept a catch to short third-man. Chappell was caught at cover in the same over to make it 235 for 7.Wagstaff was run out by brilliant direct hit at the bowler’s end by Dickson before Dal reached a 69-ball hundred packed with explosive shots. He was bowled by Davey with 12 runs needed, but Moore held his nerve to clinch a precious win.

£195k-a-week Chelsea star now "pushing" for exit with Maresca forced to sell

Chelsea are set to welcome two more new signings, with Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro poised to join Enzo Maresca’s side from Borussia Dortmund and Brighton respectively, but this £100m-plus double deal means that outgoings simply have to be sorted out sooner rather than later.

Chelsea will also add another new striker to their ranks after their £30 million move for Liam Delap, with Pedro sealing a switch to west London for an initial £55 million, which may rise to £60 million if certain add-ons are met (Fabrizio Romano).

The moves take BlueCo’s total outlay for the window to around £140 million at least, and they now face some pressure from UEFA after allegedly breaking their financial fair play rules.

Chelsea and Aston Villa are apparently facing UEFA FFP breaches, with clubs required to limit spending on wages and transfer fees to around 80 per cent of revenue. They’re also permitted a loss of around £77 million over three years, less than the PSR threshold of around £105 million in that same timeframe, and this has sparked additional pressure on Chelsea’s recruitment team to raise money.

Maresca’s side are set to be fined this week as they attempt to reach a settlement, according to the i paper, so Chelsea may need an influx of cash from player sales to help balance the books.

Europe’s financial regulations are generally tighter than England’s, and they’re under more pressure in that regard, as Chelsea’s £200m sale of the women’s team to a separate company, Blueco 22 Midco Ltd, has not been permitted as a viable source of revenue by UEFA for 24/25 – despite being allowed by the Premier League.

Christopher Nkunku pushing to leave Chelsea

Even when taking into account the financial side of things, this influx of new attackers has also left Maresca awashed with too many final-third options, so the squad needs to be balanced out with key exit deals.

According to Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, £195,000-per-week Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku is a prime contender for the Stamford Bridge exit door, and the club will indeed be forced to sell players in the coming weeks.

The Frenchman bagged 14 goals in all competitions last season but ultimately failed to break into Maresca’s starting eleven on a regular-enough basis, and he’s been regularly linked with an exit since January.

Nkunku is “pushing” to leave Chelsea right now as he seeks to embark on the next chapter of his career, as per O’Rourke, and their Premier League rivals have been credited with interest.

Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Nkunku, according to some reports, while the reliable Ben Jacobs reported in May that Tottenham made an enquiry over the 27-year-old’s availability.

While Nkunku has struggled to fit into a highly competitive squad, he has largely chipped in when required, and the former RB Leipzig sensation’s current teammates rate him very highly.

“Yeah, he’s a top player, we all know his quality, how he is as a player,” said João Félix last season.

“We already saw him doing amazing things at Leipzig. And yeah, I like to play with him. I think we think the game kind of like the same way. So I think he already know what I’m going to do, and I know what he’s going to do. I think it’s pretty easy to play with him. I think we connect very well.”

Perfect for Mbeumo: Spurs make enquiry to sign "incredible" new midfielder

The Thomas Frank era is already underway at Tottenham Hotspur, after the club announced the permanent signing of loan star Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

He joined the Lilywhites in a £30m deal after the deal in his loan contract was triggered, handing the club another sensational youngster for the immediate and long-term.

However, more business will need to be conducted by the new boss this summer, as the club look to turn around their Premier League form that saw them finish in 17th position.

Their Europa League triumph allowed them to qualify for the Champions League, making Frank’s side an exciting proposition, undoubtedly helping them in their quest within the market.

With the transfer window reopening on Monday, it presents the next opportunity for the hierarchy to land key targets for the squad, already wasting no time in identifying new talents.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new additions this summer

After the Dane’s appointment as Spurs manager, the club have already held internal talks over a move to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, subsequently allowing him to link up with his former boss.

The DR Congo international scored 19 times in his 35 Premier League appearances throughout 2024/25, with the 28-year-old offering the Lilywhites a clinical option in the final third.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

However, he’s not the only player in their sights, with Roma’s Niccolo Pisilli another star in their sights, according to reports from Italy.

They claim that Frank’s side have made an enquiry to sign the 20-year-old midfielder, who made 41 appearances for the Serie A side across all competitions this season.

It also mentioned that the Italy U21 international hasn’t ruled out a move to England this summer, with no fee mentioned for a potential move for his signature this window.

Why Pisilli would be perfect alongside Mbeumo for Spurs

Since Frank’s appointment, strong links have emerged linking Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo with a summer move to North London, but they face huge competition elsewhere for his signature.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

Manchester United are also extremely keen on a move for the 25-year-old attacker, with the Cameroonian stating his desire to move to Old Trafford this window.

The interest in the forward is no surprise, especially considering his record in 2024/25, which saw him find the net on 20 occasions, with only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak scoring more.

The appointment of his former manager could sway his decision in the coming months, potentially forming an excellent partnership with Pisilli should they both join the club.

He’s thrived in Serie A over recent years, registering two goals and one assist, leading to Ivan Juric labelling the youngster as an “incredible” talent.

Pisilli has also completed 84% of the passes he attempted, whilst registering 1.6 progressive carries, further showcasing his impressive ability with the ball at his feet.

However, he’s been just as effective without the ball, making 4.3 recoveries and winning 55% of the tackles he’s entered, offering Frank an excellent box-to-box option in the middle of the park.

The prospect of the Italian linking up with the Bees star in North London is certainly an exciting one, with the pair having the potential to star at the club for many years.

If they can replicate their current performance levels throughout any move to join the Lilywhites, they have the ability to take the side to the next level in their hunt for success during the Dane’s reign.

Dream Cerny replacement: Martin eyes Rangers reunion with "sublime" star

Glasgow Rangers have taken giant steps in the transfer market in recent days, bringing in two new signings.

Russell Martin has worked tirelessly of late to secure the signatures of both Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth and Peterborough United defender Emmanuel Fernandez.

Rothwell played under Martin during the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Southampton, scoring four times in 20 games as the club secured promotion to the Premier League.

Fernandez might not be as established a player, as the Posh struggled in League One during 2024/25, but his potential is limitless. Martin may have unearthed a gem in the 23-year-old.

With these two joining Max Aarons and Lyall Cameron as new arrivals this summer, Martin is slowly building a squad which he hopes will be capable of winning the Premiership title and progressing into the Champions League group stages.

Russell Martin watches on whilst in charge of Southampton.

More signings will be required over the next few weeks in order for the boss to achieve this and several others have been linked.

The current squad is short of wingers, however, and this must be acted upon swiftly ahead of the first competitive match against Panathinaikos in a few weeks.

Most expensive SPFL signings (timeless) Rangers Celtic

Martin won’t be able to call on the services of Vaclav Cerny, however, who returned to his parent club at the end of the season.

Vaclav Cerny’s Rangers statistics

The Czech winger joined from Wolfsburg last summer as Philippe Clement sought to strengthen his attacking options.

While the first few weeks were tough for the 27-year-old, he settled into life at Ibrox nicely and ended up scoring 18 goals and grabbing nine assists for the Light Blues across 52 matches.

In the top flight, Cerny registered 2.9 shots per game for the Gers, while averaging 2.5 key passes and succeeding with 1.4 dribbles per game against Scottish opposition.

It was in the Europa League where the winger truly showcased his class. Not only did he help the club reach the quarter-finals of the competition, but Cerny registered eight goal contributions – six goals and two assists – along the way.

Despite this success in Glasgow, a permanent move was never really in the question. Wolfsburg were looking to recoup the money that they spent on him in order to sanction a sale.

That fee? £8m. Although this was reported back in January, it looks as though the boat has sailed regarding a move to bring Cerny back to Ibrox.

Whatever happens this summer, bringing in one or two wingers on either flank should be a main priority for the manager.

Vaclav Cerny

As it stands, only Ross McCausland, Oscar Cortes and Rabbi Matondo are his wide options. One fell behind Cerny in the pecking order, one was injured for the majority of the season and Matondo spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign out on loan.

Could Martin be eyeing up a reunion with a former player of his in the coming weeks?

Rangers search for a new winger

The Ibrox side have been linked with their fair share of wide men over the previous few weeks. Kwame Poku was the notable link, but he ended up making the move to QPR.

Elsewhere, Tyrhys Dolan and Moussa Djenepo were both linked with moves to Glasgow a few weeks ago, but nothing materialised.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

With time running out before the clash against the Greek giants, Martin now needs to find a player or two who can settle into his way of playing.

According to Sky Sports, David Brooks looked like he was set to join West Bromwich Albion, but this move is now off.

David Brooks for Bournemouth.

This has opened the door for the £50k-per-week winger to reunite with Martin in Glasgow. Of course, the Baggies target played under the Rangers boss during a spell at Southampton in the 2023/24 campaign.

He has just one year left on his current deal with the Cherries, which means the Light Blues might be on their way to securing a bargain.

If so, Brooks could be an excellent addition and hopefully ease the blow of losing Cerny.

Why Rangers must sign David Brooks

Brooks made the big time when he moved to Bournemouth in 2018. His first season saw the Welshman scored seven goals and grab five assists in the Premier League, certainly proving his class.

Indeed, Eddie Howe, his boss at the time, lauded Brooks as “sublime” after an impressive display against Brighton.

Truth be told, he hasn’t quite hit those heights since, albeit while bravely battling back after he was diagnosed with Stage Two Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021. Across 29 top-flight appearances last term, the winger scored twice.

Despite starting just nine times, he still averaged 0.9 shots per game, while also creating three big chances and averaging 0.7 key passes each match.

If given regular chances in the starting XI, Brooks would make for an exciting signing, no doubt about that.

Under Martin at the Saints in 2023/24, the Welsh star grabbed five assists, created eight big chances and succeeded with over 50% of his dribble attempts.

These statistics were recorded in the second tier, but it shows just how effective Brooks can be if he gets a chance.

It would take some effort to match the tally recorded by Cerny last season, but Brooks has already proven his class in the Premier League during his career.

With strengths that include key passes, through balls and holding onto the ball, the winger could dominate defenders north of the border, that’s for sure.

The only sticking point could be the fee. But as mentioned, he has a single year left on his deal, which puts the Ibrox side in a solid negotiating position.

Considering Martin has worked with the 35-cap winger before, it is a signing that makes sense for all parties. Hopefully it can be sewn up sooner rather than later.

Dinesh Karthik to play for Paarl Royals in the SA20

The 39-year-old is set to become the first Indian player to feature in the tournament

Nagraj Gollapudi06-Aug-2024Dinesh Karthik is set to become the first Indian player to feature in the SA20. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Karthik will join Paarl Royals as an overseas player ahead of the new season starting January 9.The SA20 will be the first tournament Karthik will play since announcing retirement from “representative cricket” in June on the day he turned 39. Karthik, who played 180 internationals for India, last featured in IPL 2024 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who have now signed him up as a mentor-cum-batting coach. On the T20 circuit, Karthik is rated by his peers among the sharpest pundits owing to his vast experience in the shortest format. Karthik, currently covering the Hundred for , has featured in 401 T20s and, in the IPL, played for six teams, which included leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Karthik also was among the fittest players in the IPL, having missed just two matches across 17 seasons.”I have so many fond memories of playing in and visiting South Africa,” Karthik said. “When this opportunity came about, I couldn’t say no because of how special it would be to come back to playing competitive cricket and win this incredible competition with the Royals.”Even though I didn’t have the chance to represent the Royals in the IPL, to me it was always a franchise setup and environment that was very attractive as a player. I am delighted to be joining the Paarl Royals team which oozes a lot of experience, quality and potential. I am certainly looking forward to joining the group and contributing to what should be an exciting season.”Only retired Indian players are allowed by BCCI to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Last year, Ambati Rayudu turned up to play for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL and then in January 2024 with MI Emirates in the ILT20, while Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan featured for Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 too. Curran cracks maiden T20 ton to clinch top spot for Surrey

England allrounder reaches three figures with winning six in steep run chase

Sam Curran hit his first T20 hundred – and only his second in any format – to lead Surrey to a five-wicket win over Hampshire. The result not only guaranteed Surrey a home quarter-final, but ensured they will finish top of the South Group.Curran, the England allrounder clubbed, six sixes and seven fours in his unbeaten, 58-ball 102 and reached his century with the winning hit, as Surrey chased down a target of 184 with five balls to spare at The Kia Oval.Curran, caught off a no-ball on 44, shared stands of 86 with Dominic Sibley (27) and 54 with Jamie Overton (21). John Turner was the pick of Hampshire’s attack with 2 for 30.

Hampshire’s 183 was built around a career-best 66 from Toby Albert, his first half-century in the format. Jordan Clark’s 3 for 24 kept the target within bounds while there were also two wickets for Matt Dunn in his first T20 match for three years. The 2022 winners Hampshire, already out of this year’s Blast, adopted an aggressive approach after being put in but, Albert apart, couldn’t capitalise on positive starts. Australian Ben McDermott, hit Dunn for the game’s first six, only to find the hands of Overton on the boundary later in the over.Dunn also accounted for Tom Prest, while James Vince threatened briefly with five boundaries including a majestic six off Curran before being undone by a beauty from Clark which jagged back and crashed into his stumps. When Joe Weatherley perished early, the Hawks were 65 for 4.Albert had begun explosively, twice clearing the ropes to race to 30. Benny Howell, however, continued the trend of a big hit and out, and James Fuller was the second batter castled by Clark, playing around a straight one. Liam Dawson sparkled momentarily until sacrificing himself after a mix-up in running and it needed a cool head coupled with late acceleration from Albert to get Hampshire to a creditable 183.Deprived of their two leading scorers in the competition this season – Ollie Pope and Jamie Smith – away on Test duty, the hosts needed others to stick their hand up for the chase. Will Jacks smacked the first ball from Brad Wheal for six, but the bowler’s revenge was swift as he holed out to the next delivery and Wheal struck again in his following over to remove Laurie Evans.Turner cranked up the pressure on the home batters with two hostile overs, but it was England Under-19 international Eddie Jack who removed Rory Burns courtesy of a stunning catch by Prest, leaving Surrey floundering at 27 for 3. Sibley should have followed soon afterwards but was dropped by Dawson at midwicket, Fuller the unlucky bowler.Curran, returning to county cricket from last month’s T20 World Cup, celebrated his team-mate’s reprieve by planting Dawson over wide mid-on for six and, having got the taste, hit Howell for successive maximums in the following over. More drama, with Turner holding on to a steepling top edge only for the umpire to signal no-ball: again, it was Fuller who was out of luck.Curran survived the loss of Sibley to reach 50 in 34 balls, before surpassing his previous career-best in the format helped by a fourth six. Overton caught the mood with successive sixes of Jack and though he departed before the end, Curran hit Fuller into the Bedser Stand to see Surrey home.

£180,000-a-week Arsenal forward considering leaving as Bayern Munich reach out

Arsenal have plenty of time on their hands to bring in stars to strengthen their bid for the Premier League title, but may now face a battle to retain one of their key men, according to a report.

Arsenal closing in on Martin Zubimendi deal

In what appears to have become a long-running saga, Arsenal are close to signing Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi after the Spain international was in London over the weekend to try and iron out the finer details of his move.

With Thomas Partey set to leave the Gunners on a free transfer amid interest from Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, there is definite scope for Mikel Arteta to reshape his engine room ahead of another campaign where his side are expected to lead the fight on all fronts.

Nevertheless, there is still no clear direction on whether Arsenal will sign Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres to lead the line as the financials involved between the club and either RB Leipzig or Sporting remain to be determined.

Of course, the Gunners have plenty of capital to play with in North London, but they need to factor in the best possible way to use it without being short-changed in their hunt for reinforcements.

Taking a measured approach to signings makes a degree of sense, though there is always a sense of impatience among supporters desperate to see new arrivals.

Jorrel Hato is another long-term Arsenal target. Still, there may need to be one or two departures to bankroll their summer spending spree.

Looking ahead to potential events that could occur, the Gunners now have a major decision on their hands involving one of their most important contributors.

Arsenal could face battle to retain Gabriel Martinelli

According to TBR, Arsenal could struggle to retain Gabriel Martinelli after Bayern Munich made contact over a potential move for the Brazil international.

Lodging an enquiry, the Bundesliga champions have tempted the 24-year-old to think about his future, and he is said to be ‘exploring his options’ and hasn’t made a conclusive decision over whether to stay in North London or otherwise.

Labelled “brilliant” by teammate Gabriel Jesus, Saudi Pro League clubs have also expressed an interest in his services, though it feels unlikely that he would opt to leave Europe’s top-five leagues during a relatively early stage in his career.

Enjoying a productive time of things last term, £180,000 per week earner Martinelli registered ten goals and six assists in 51 appearances across all competitions and wouldn’t be easy to replace at the Emirates Stadium.

Intriguingly, Arsenal have looked at Chelsea’s Noni Madueke after missing out on Nico Williams to Barcelona, so there is a possibility that wingers will form a key part of their transfer strategy regardless of the outcome elsewhere.

More career goals than Tavernier: Rangers eyeing 'legendary' Igamane upgrade

Rangers are almost back in action and it’s a particularly exciting time for the new man in the Ibrox dug-out Russell Martin.

He will take charge of the Gers for the very first time in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, with last season’s Belgian Pro League runners-up in town, and a fair few players could be debuting in light blue.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez have all arrived in Govan so far this summer, but could the biggest name of the lot be on his way to Glasgow’s West End soon?

It appears as though all three Rangers players who scored more than six goals across all competitions last season could depart.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Václav Černý won’t be back, he has returned to Wolfsburg following his loan, while Cyriel Dessers is seemingly on his way to AEK Athens, if the two clubs can agree a fee, with Rangers holding out for £5m, as relayed by The National.

The biggest departure of them all though, could be Hamza Igamane, who is reportedly being targeted by Ligue 1 side Lille, in a deal which could be worth as much as £20m, thereby becoming Rangers’ all-time record sale.

Martin McMillan of the Glasgow Times claims that les Dogues have put their interest in the Moroccan striker ‘on hold’, but it does appear more likely than not that Igamane will be sold this summer, either ending up at Stade Pierre-Mauroy or elsewhere.

So, as Martin searches for attacking reinforcements, Mark Pirie of the Daily Record has reiterated Rangers’ interest in Jamie Vardy, stating that the Glasgow giants remain ‘keen’ on a move, citing the Daily Mail.

Meantime, Mike McGrath of the Telegraph has previously documented that, wherever he goes, Vardy wants to be a ‘regular starter’ and, well, given Rangers’ need for a centre-forward right now, with a Champions League tie against Panathinaikos less than three weeks away, the veteran would surely be guaranteed game time from the jump.

How Jamie Vardy would improve Rangers

Despite the fact he is now 38 years old, Vardy still scored ten goals last season, made all the more impressive by the fact he was playing for a generally hopeless Leicester City side, who were relegated from the Premier League.

By netting against Bournemouth in May, Vardy took his tally to 200 goals in 500 appearances for Leicester, which is very pleasing for fans of symmetry. In total, the veteran has scored 237 club career goals at professional level, ahead of what free-scoring Rangers skipper James Tavernier (138 career goals) has achieved to date.

His most recent manager at the Foxes, Ruud van Nistelrooy, labelled him a “living legend”, while Rob Tanner of the Athletic believes he is, unquestionably, Leicester’s greatest-ever player.

So, let’s assess how his statistics compare to Igamane, a player 16 years his junior, but one he could soon be replacing.

As the table outlines, Igamane did score six more goals than Vardy last season, while the Moroccan came out on top when it came to shots, shots on target and touches per 90, which all makes sense when you think about it.

Igamane was playing for a dominant team in, according to Global Football Rankings, the 43rd strongest league on the planet.

In complete contrast, Vardy was plying his trade for one of the worst teams in the Premier League, so was very much feeding off scraps, underlined by his miserly 20 touches per 90, making his tally of ten goals actually incredibly impressive.

The season before last, when Leicester were in the EFL Championship, still ranked all the way up at 11th by the aforementioned Global Football Rankings, Vardy scored 20 goals in all competitions, so just imagine how many he would get in the Premiership.

De Kock's T20I future: 'I don't know, to be dead honest,' says Walter

South Africa remain unsure about the availability of Quinton de Kock, who was omitted from a second successive series post the T20 World Cup, in the format.De Kock, who is no longer nationally contracted but has not announced a complete international retirement, missed the three T20s against West Indies last month and will not play in two matches against Ireland later this month. South Africa will then play four T20Is at home against India in November as preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup ramps up.Asked if there was any clarity on de Kock’s availability, white-ball coach Rob Walter indicated that there would not be any for some time. “I don’t know, to be dead honest. For the next little while, there will be no conversations between myself and Quinny as to whether he wants to play for South Africa again,” Walter said at a press conference. “I’ve left the door open for him to approach me if and when he wants to do that. That might never happen.”Related

  • SA unsure on de Kock's T20I future: 'We have a glimmer of hope'

De Kock retired from Test cricket in 2021 and from ODIs after the 50-over World Cup last year. At the time, Walter had said de Kock intended to step away from all international cricket but was persuaded to stay on for the 2024 T20 World Cup and allowed to miss a bilateral series in the lead-up to play at the BBL. By making that allowance, South Africa demonstrated a fundamental shift in their usual selection policy, which requires players to be involved in at least some international cricket ahead of major tournaments – and was the reason AB de Villiers’ request to make a comeback at the 2019 ODI World Cup was denied – and illustrated the power of leagues. The decision paid off as de Kock finished as South Africa’s highest run-scorer at the T20 World Cup, and was key to their run to the final.Since then, de Kock has played in MLC and the CPL and will play at the SA20 and IPL, all of which will mean he is still eligible for South Africa, although Walter was careful to underline that his place was not guaranteed. “There might be a conversation and also that conversation does initially mean it will lead to him being selected,” he said. “We have to just allow him to have his space, to play league cricket and to do what he needs to do. What will become more and more important is performance. He’s not exactly old [de Kock is 31] so from here on in, it’s a performance-based conversation.”Walter has put no timeline on de Kock making a final decision and in his absence, South Africa continue to invest in Reeza Hendricks in the opening role and have options between Kyle Verreynne, Ryan Rickelton and Heinrich Klaasen as wicketkeepers. Of those four, only Klaasen is not part of the squads to play Afghanistan and Ireland in the UAE. He pulled out of the CPL for personal reasons and remains unavailable for the time being. “He has some family matters that he is dealing with currently,” Walter confirmed. “As soon as that position has changed, he’ll obviously fall back into playing again.”
