BJ Watling whittles away at England's overseas resolve

England’s ineffective use of Kookaburra is exploited as New Zealand take command

George Dobell in Mount Maunganui23-Nov-2019Rising sea levels will probably get us all eventually. Or maybe it will be a meteorite. Either way, for much of the third day here, it seemed both posed a more immediate threat to New Zealand’s batsmen than anything offered by England’s bowlers. Just two wickets fell in the day; one to the part-time off-spin of Joe Root.Let’s be clear: this has been a pretty joyless surface for seamers and spinners alike. The sort of slow, begrudging pitch that could persuade bowlers they should have been wheelwrights, switchboard operators or coal miners; professions with a future by comparison. The dismissal of Kane Williamson, the victim of the one delivery in the game that has seriously misbehaved, looks more bizarre by the session.Would such a surface be justified if it resulted in a dramatic finish on the final day? Maybe. Not so long ago, there was little unusual about it and the England camp certainly have no complaints. In this day and age, though, with so many competing attractions and shorter attention spans, you do wonder if such pitches – and the continued use of the Kookaburra ball – are helpful. A rock fall might make dramatic viewing; it doesn’t necessarily make the 10,000 years of erosion that caused it great entertainment.Either way, New Zealand have made the best of it so far. BJ Watling has provided a masterclass in batting in such conditions. He has shown England exactly what they should have done on day two. While England’s batsmen lost patience and, as a consequence, their wickets – think of Ben Stokes’ charge down the pitch and his edged drive against Tim Southee – Watling was wonderfully patient and ruthless. This was his eighth Test century – that, by comparison, is two more than MS Dhoni in 26 fewer Tests – and, in the course of it, he steered New Zealand away from trouble and into the lead. Only three men (Adam Gilchrist, Les Ames and Andy Flower) have scored more than his seven Test centuries as keeper; only four men (the previous three mentioned plus AB de Villiers) have higher batting averages among those with a minimum of 1,000 runs. He probably deserves more plaudits than he receives. In such circumstances, any criticism of England’s bowlers does have to be measured. Maybe a truly great spinner, the likes of Shane Warne or Muttiah Muralitharan, might have found something from this surface. Or maybe one of the great seamers, Richard Hadlee or Malcolm Marshall, would have found a way. But even they had tough days and it is likely even they may have had to settle for a day of patience and damage limitation. Whatever the scorecard may suggest, England really didn’t bowl badly. They just lacked some potency and some plans for such situations. But this was a really tough day and we might reflect that it wasn’t so much that their bowlers underperformed as that their batsmen didn’t take full advantage of the surface the previous day.It was a frustrating day for Jofra Archer•Getty ImagesJohn Inverarity, for many years Dennis Lillee’s captain at Shield Level, was asked during his period as a coach in county cricket how Lillee would have reacted to a particularly unhelpful featherbed. The answer, in general, was that Lillee would have delivered a metronomic line and length in the first innings in the hope of producing some wear in the surface. He would then have looked to exploit that area in the second innings. It is a tactic that requires immense skill, however, and, perhaps, the right sort of pitch. Maybe it’s worth noting that Lillee hardly played in Asia, either. So, what could England have done differently? Well, they did turn to the policy of attrition really quite early. Indeed, they opened the bowling with Sam Curran and Stuart Broad in the morning. Broad, in particular, was immaculate. His first spell, of five overs, cost just one run and he hardly bowled a loose ball throughout the day. But the tactic was a bit of a surprise simply because Jofra Archer had troubled Henry Nicholls the previous night – including inflicting a sickening blow to his head – to the extent there was some doubt whether he would be able to resume in the morning. You can imagine that New Zealand were a touch relieved not to have to face him.Equally it seemed odd that Stokes was only asked to bowl four overs in the first two sessions. The England camp insisted he was fit and his record, not least in Sri Lanka (he was magnificent in the Colombo Test), suggests he might have had the skills – maybe simply the character – to make a difference. When he struck with the first ball after the tea interval, albeit with something of a long-hop that was cut to gully and outstandingly well held, it rather highlighted Root’s delay in calling on his vice-captain.Even at the start of the day, with 29 overs to go before the new ball was available, there was a sense that England were playing for that new ball. And then, when it proved not to be the panacea for which they hoped, they didn’t really have anywhere to go. Suffice to say, they have a huge amount of work to do on their flat-pitch, Kookaburra game.Maybe Archer could have been given that new ball, too? But Root’s logic for not doing so was reasonable: Broad is vastly experienced and has had a fine year – albeit with a Duke’s ball – and Sam Curran may need that new ball more to aid his swing. Archer has shown previously that he can be dangerous at any stage of the ball’s lifespan. There is no guarantee things would have worked out better for England had he done so.Besides, Archer is a perplexing cricketer. There are times, such as when he suddenly went up a gear here in mid-afternoon, when he looks so full of talent that anything seems possible. And perhaps, because of such moments, our expectations are unrealistic. This is just his fifth Test, after all, and his first with a Kookaburra ball. Even David Bowie had a dodgy early album.ALSO READ: Watling masterclass turns tables on EnglandBut what is it about Archer that, a little like Andy Caddick a generation ago, he seems to perform in such unpredictable fits and starts? Why was it that here, in his 21st over, he suddenly generated the sort of pace – 90 mph and more – that render him such a precious talent? It was from a similar stage of the game he generated the most extreme pace at Lord’s in that spell when Steve Smith was so inconvenienced. But what it is about Archer that means he struggles to generate such hostility at the start of the innings when the game can be shaped? We simply don’t know and, from the look on Root’s face, he doesn’t either. This was not an easy day on which to be a fielding captain.Archer’s fielding was a bit disappointing, too. On a hot and increasingly disappointing day, he was not the only man to misfield. But he did so on a couple of occasions and he did so to the obvious irritation of his teammates.Everyone makes such errors, though. And it was Stokes, as fit and committed a player as England have, who made the most damaging error; dropping Watling at slip off Root when he had 31. These things happen. As long as the players are satisfied that their colleagues have put in every effort in training and in the game, there is no reason for these things to fester. Most of all, Watling and co. deserve credit for the way they played. For it’s not really England’s bowlers he showed up; it’s England’s batsmen. They could learn plenty from his hunger, his discipline and the way he made them pay. It was admirably ruthless.

Rangers have hit gold on "thunderous" star who is worth more than Taylor

Glasgow Rangers will be aiming for a solid summer transfer window under the 49ers as they seek to end their Premiership title drought.

Year after year, the club fail to improve their squad by signing players who either aren’t good enough for Rangers, or those who appear to be injury-prone and miss far too many games.

With a new era about to begin this summer, might this cycle stop? One can hope.

The Light Blues’ transfer activity has ranged from making bizarre signings – Rafael Fernandes and Kieran Dowell – along with bringing those in who failed to adapt to Scottish football – Robin Propper and Sam Lammers – over the previous couple of years.

One thing the club haven’t done for a while is sign someone who has Celtic on their C.V. However, might this change in the near future? Especially as Greg Taylor has been linked with a shock move to Ibrox this summer.

Greg Taylor has been linked with a move to Rangers

Since the end of the Second World War, only Alfie Conn, Maurice Johnston, Stephen Pressley and Kenny Miller have played for both Rangers and Celtic.

None of these players moved directly between each other, spending time somewhere else before making the move to either one of the Old Firm.

Taylor is out of contract this summer and could leave the Parkhead side for nothing. Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has had his say on the matter and believes that the Ibrox side would be wise to make a move for the left-back ahead of next season.

“I know the rivalry between the two clubs but he’s Scottish and he ticks the boxes. You could ask the question,” said Boyd while speaking on the Scottish Sun’s YouTube channel regarding the defender.

“Is he a better player than Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz? Well, I think he’s shown for a period of time what he can do.

“This could actually generate funds if they sold one of the left-backs. They are potentially saleable assets.”

Greg Taylor’s statistics this season

Taylor has played 36 times for Celtic this term, scoring once while providing seven assists in all competitions.

The Scot has also created eight big chances in the Premiership, while averaging 1.4 key passes per game and succeeding with 56% of his dribbles, highlighting his impressive attacking skills.

Combine this with the fact he wins 54% of his total contested duels, makes 1.5 tackles and dribbles past only 0.3 times per game, it is evident that Taylor could be a reliable signing for the Gers.

A clean injury record would also be a bonus, that’s for sure. At the time of writing, the left-back is currently valued at €4.9m (£4.2m) according to Football Transfers, meaning Celtic could be losing out on a decent transfer fee.

Signing Taylor might allow the new manager at Ibrox to offload either one of Jefte or Ridvan Yilmaz this summer in order to generate funds.

The Brazilian has endured a mixed campaign since making the move to Glasgow last summer, yet he is still valued higher than Taylor…

Why Jefte is a promising player for Rangers

The defender arrived from Brazilian side Fluminense on a four-year deal last summer as Clement sought to add some more youth prospects to his first-team squad.

Jefte

He spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Cypriot side APOEL, scoring three goals and grabbing four assists across just 31 league matches for the club.

On this basis, his attacking talents were there for all to see, with Scottish content creator Kai Watson praising the defender, saying: “He always looks to drive at the opposition defence and is comfortable going outside or cutting inside.

“He’s also not afraid of having a pop at goal and has a thunderous strike in his arsenal.

“He looks like he could be a creative threat while also offering some goalscoring prowess himself.”

It certainly appears as though he has found Scottish football harder, having registered only two assists in 28 Premiership matches thus far.

He has averaged 1.1 key passes per game in the top flight, however, along with creating two big chances and succeeding with 1.1 dribbles per match. Defensively though, the youngster has been a liability on occasions.

On average, he loses possession 14.9 times per game for the Light Blues in the Scottish top flight, while the Brazilian commits 0.9 fouls per game and regularly finds himself out of position trying to create chances in the final third.

Jefte

Over time, the former Fluminense starlet will mature, and his defence abilities will improve, but this has been a key weakness throughout the 2024/25 campaign. If the defender wishes to maintain his place in the squad, this is something he will need to work on, no doubt about that.

Jefte’s market valuation at Rangers

Whatever happens, should Rangers sell Jefte in the immediate future, they could rake in a decent profit on the left-back.

Indeed, according to Football Transfers, he is currently valued at €5.5m (£4.7m) and this figure will only continue to rise as time goes on.

When he made the move to Scotland, his valuation sat at less than £1m, proving that exposure to first-team football, especially in the Europa League, has allowed the player to increase his value.

Perhaps he would be best served playing in a more advanced position, which could allow the defender to play to his attacking strengths.

What is certain is that Jefte is currently worth more than Taylor according to Football Transfers and while a move for the Celtic man wouldn’t be a bad idea, might the Gers be better off developing Jefte in a position where he can contribute more effectively?

Rangers have hit the jackpot with the Brazilian defender, whose value has soared in his short time in Glasgow already, and they should avoid any controversial move for a Celtic dud to continue his development.

The summer transfer window could be an interesting time to be a supporter, especially if the 49ers takeover goes through in the next few weeks.

£200k-per-week star could now be tempted to join Arsenal after Berta talks

Director Andrea Berta has personally held talks over signing a high-earning player as one of his first actions at Arsenal, and it is believed the Gunners target could now be tempted to join Mikel Arteta’s side as a result.

Andrea Berta's list of forward targets at Arsenal

Rumours have surrounded the acquisition of a new striker for Arsenal this summer, with Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, Sporting CP sensation Viktor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko all repeatedly linked.

Arsenal: Berta tells Arteta to sign "powerful" forward likened to Aguero

Following Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz’s long-term injuries, the need for another prolific option up top is made all the more prevalent, with midfielder Mikel Merino currently being used as an emergency makeshift striker.

Arsenal are developing a strong interest in Gyokeres to fill the void from next season, according to David Ornstein, while fellow reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has tipped Berta to make an offer for Isak.

However, while a new striker is believed to be high on Berta’s agenda, the Italian also plans to upgrade Arteta’s wide options.

According to GiveMeSport, Arsenal are targeting a left-winger this summer, and they’re even pondering the possibility of bringing in someone who can compete with Bukayo Saka on the right-hand side.

Last summer, under ex-director Edu, Arsenal displayed a real interest in Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams for the role.

It was reported at the time that Williams was a top target for Arteta, off the back of an impressive 2023/2024 campaign where he bagged 19 assists in all competitions, but the Spain international opted to remain at Bilbao for this season.

Athletic Bilbao'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their third goal

The 22-year-old’s contract includes a £48 million release clause, and Arsenal’s interest hasn’t gone away. However, they face very stiff competition for his services, as Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also targeting Williams.

Andrea Berta holds Arsenal talks with Nico Williams targeted

That is according to The Guardian and journalist Ed Aarons, who states that Berta has personally held Arsenal transfer talks with Williams’ representatives in “one of his first acts” as director.

In his report for The Guardian, Aarons also reports Berta’s influence could tempt Williams to join Arsenal over elite clubs in the race for his signature – following two years of heavy scouting from the Gunners.

The £200,000-per-week forward is also expected to push for a summer exit, but while his £48m release clause will be enticing, the major obstacle will lie in his rumoured wage demands. Williams apparently wants as much as £300,000-per-week at his new club, which would make him Arsenal’s highest-paid player.

The question is, would he be worth it? Williams carries a reputation as one of La Liga’s most highly-rated young attacking stars, completing the fifth-highest rate of successful take-ons per 90 in the entire division (WhoScored), and his exciting style would hand Arsenal another major weapon in the final third.

His return has lessened this season compared to last – scoring nine goals and assisting seven others in all competitions – but his form has picked up lately as we approach the summer window.

Tottenham ready to move for "elite" Postecoglou replacement after Chelsea loss

A report in the aftermath of Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge claims that Daniel Levy is preparing to move for Ange Postecoglou’s replacement, following what was a sorry evening for the Australian.

The Australian has opened up about his future at the club this week.

Last season, the former Celtic boss actually broke the record for best start made by a new manager since the Premier League’s inception, but now he’s on the verge of a far less impressive record following a real transformation from hero to zero.

The Lilywhites have coped with serious injury problems throughout 2024/2025 which have debilitated Postecoglou’s options, decreasing the chances of him making a success of this campaign, but there is also an argument to be made that the results still haven’t been good enough.

Postecoglou didn’t do himself any favours after instigating a row with Tottenham supporters on Thursday evening either. The 59-year-old cupped his ear to the Spurs’ away end when Pape Matar Sarr notched a brief equaliser against Chelsea, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up, and this was in response to boos over his decision to bring the Senegalese on in place of Lucas Bergvall.

Following the backlash, Postecoglou denied that was why he signaled the Spurs supporters.

“It’s incredible how things get interpreted,” Postecoglou said in a post-match press conference. “We’d just scored, I just wanted to hear them cheer. Because we’d been through a tough time, and I thought it was a cracking goal. I wanted them to get really excited.

“I felt at that point we could potentially go on and win the game. I just felt momentum was on our [side]. It doesn’t bother me, it’s not the first time they’ve booed my substitutions or my decisions, that’s fine, they’re allowed to do that. But we’d just scored a goal, just scored an equaliser, I was just hoping we could get some excitement.”

In any case, pressure is still mounting on the Tottenham manager, and an update has come to light on their links to Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.

Tottenham preparing to move for Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola

According to TEAMtalk, Spurs are preparing to make a move for Iraola, and they regard the Spaniard as an “elite” young manager following his impressive campaign in the Cherries dugout.

Tottenham also believe they could “build a Premier League-winning side” with Iraola in charge, but they still have to convince him of the project.

He remains the top candidate to replace Postecoglou, following previous reports that Tottenham have Iraola as their top managerial target, and rumours of the 42-year-old’s potential switch to London look as if they will only intensify.

As well as Iraola, Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and ex-Dortmund boss Edin Terzic have all been linked in recent months.

Fulham in contact to sign £30m ex-Real Madrid ace who's seen as "perfect"

Fulham have reached out and made contact over signing a former Real Madrid player, as Marco Silva’s side begin planning for next season.

Fulham competing for European qualification

Just seven points separate ninth from fourth in this hotly-contested Premier League race for Europe, and Fulham are still in with every chance of competing in the Conference League, Europa League or even the Champions League.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 3, 2025

While the latter competition is unlikely, Silva will be looking to end the season as strongly as possible to give Fulham the best chance to see their names in the Europa or Conference draws next season.

Tottenham are looking at Silva as a potential replacement for Ange Postecoglou, and if they decide he’s the right man for the job, then this could well be the 47-year-old’s final season at Craven Cottage.

The tactician will want to end his Fulham career on a high if he does decide to part company, and what better way than sealing a European qualification place? After they disappointingly crashed out of the FA Cup to Crystal Palace.

Unfortunately for Silva, some very tough tests await his side over this final stretch of the campaign, including Premier League title frontrunners Liverpool, this season’s surprise package Bournemouth and a crunch west London derby against Chelsea.

Qualifying for Europe will also go a long way to attracting the best players possible to Fulham this summer.

Andreas Pereira has been linked with a return to Brazil as well, so the Whites may also need to sign a quality new wide player to replace the former Man United winger.

Fulham make contact over signing Deportivo sensation Yeremay Hernandez

According to TEAMtalk this week, Deportibvo La Coruna sensation Yeremay Hernandez is on their radar. Hernandez’s excellent form for the La Liga 2 side this season has attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea, according to reports in Spain, but it is now believed that Fulham are ready to go toe-to-toe with their cross-town rivals.

The 22-year-old can play on either flank, bagging 11 goals and four assists from out wide, and he is seen by many as a young player with serious potential.

TT report that Fulham have made contact over signing Hernandez already, with the former Real Madrid academy gem also scouted by Arsenal and targeted by Brentford.

However, it is Fulham who’ve made a head start by instigating an approach, and it is believed they’re extremely keen on the £30 million Spaniard. Hernandez, it is claimed, would be seen as a “perfect” option for Silva, who wishes to reinforce his wide options a a top priority.

Sheffield United plot new contracts for three stars on combined £90k-p/w

Sheffield United are thought to be looking to tie down three different key players to new contracts, according to an exciting new update regarding their futures.

Sheffield United reach defining moment in season

The Blades are seven games away from returning to the Premier League, with Chris Wilder’s side topping the Championship table heading into the vital remaining weeks of the season.

United have won four of their last five league matches, seeing them leapfrog a stalling Leeds United side, going two points ahead of them in the process. Perhaps more importantly, they are also only two ahead of third-place Burnley, highlighting how tight things are in the automatic promotion battle.

While on-pitch matters are clearly huge, tying down certain players to new contracts is also essential, with Wilder making it clear that he wants deals for Rhian Brewster, Anel Ahmedhodzic and Jack Robinson sorted: “For me, as you can imagine, all the focus and concentration is on what happens here but if you’re asking me, would I like them all to re-sign, yes. One hundred per cent. They’ve all been outstanding for us and have still got a part to play going forward.”

Sheffield United want new deals for key trio

According to The Star, the futures of Sheffield United trio Brewster, Ahmedhodzic and Robinson were “discussed last week when members of the group that own United, including Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, visited Sheffield”.

Wilder has also claimed that “Steve Bettis is on with that and in discussion with the owners”, as they look to get some big in-house business over the line.

This would be great news for United, with the £90,000-a-week-combined trio of Brewster, Ahmedhodzic and Robinson such important players this season. This season, they have made 89 appearances in the Championship in total, showing how important they are to the cause, with 67 of those starts.

Ahmedhodzic and Robinson have both been reliable members of the Blades’ defence, but the emergence of Brewster has arguably been one of the biggest feel-good stories of the campaign at Bramall Lane.

Having suffered so much with injuries and not kicking after leaving Liverpool as a highly-rated player, the 24-year-old has scored in his last two appearances, including the priceless winner in the 1-0 victory away to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The Englishman’s influence is going to be big in these next few weeks, given his form, and he has the ability to steer United back to the Premier League.

Sheffield United ready to sign £25k-p/w "natural leader" from league rivals

Chris Wilder could bolster his Sheffield United squad by snatching one of their rivals’ finest talents.

BySean Markus Clifford Apr 3, 2025

New deals for him and his two Blades teammates feels like a no-brainer, especially as Wilder values them all so much, and the hope is that all three of them are still at Bramall Lane next season, at which point United are back where they belong.

Arsenal ready to sell £26m "monster" who wants to leave with AC Milan keen

Arsenal are now willing to sell a player for around £26m this summer, and AC Milan are interested in his signature, according to a report.

Arteta's summer transfer plans taking shape

There have been widespread suggestions that Arsenal are in a healthy position PSR-wise, which could mean they have the funds for a big signing this summer, and Mikel Arteta is particularly keen on getting a new striker through the door.

The Gunners were recently handed a boost in their pursuit of Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, with it being revealed the Swedish forward is keen on a move to north London, while they also hold an interest in the likes of Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko.

Striker is not the only position in which Arteta is eager to strengthen, however, with the manager identifying the need for greater depth in wide areas, and Deportivo de La Coruna’s Yeremay Hernandez is a potential target, alongside Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

Offer ready: Arsenal keen to bid £30m for "special" Premier League forward

The Gunners are set to move for an attacking midfielder, who plays for one of their Premier League rivals.

ByDominic Lund Apr 6, 2025

With a new central midfielder clearly also of interest, given the widespread links to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, it could make sense for Arteta to offload some rotation players this summer, regardless of the healthy financial position the club find themselves in.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are now willing to cash-in on Jakub Kiwior this summer, in order to fund their own transfer business, and they would be looking to receive a fee of around €25m – €30m (£21m – £26m).

There is no shortage of interest in Kiwior, with a whole host of European clubs being named as potential suitors, including both AC Milan and Inter Milan.

The 25-year-old wants to join a new club this summer, given that his development has been stifled by a lack of playing time for the Gunners, and it now looks like he may be given the opportunity to do so.

Kiwior exit could be suitable for all parties

With Arteta planning to bolster his options in multiple positions this summer, it would make sense to generate as much money as possible by cashing-in on out-of-favour players, and the Poland international has made just 10 Premier League appearances this season.

At 25, the defender is at an age where he needs to be playing regularly, so it is understandable that he wants to move on this summer, despite putting in some impressive performances during his time in north London.

The former Spezia man has previously been lauded as a “monster” by reporter Sam Dean, and he put in a solid display against Everton last time out, making five defensive actions and creating one big chance.

Kiwior originally arrived at Arsenal for £20m, and given that he has remained a sporadic option for Arteta throughout his time at the club, it could be a shrewd piece of business if the Gunners are able to sell the centre-back for a profit.

Messi tipped him to be a superstar: Spurs must now axe "astonishing" dud

With each passing week, Ange Postecoglou’s position as Tottenham Hotspur manager feels increasingly precarious.

Now, the Australian could still end the season with a European trophy in his hands, but should that not happen, then crashing out of both domestic cups and finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table might cost him.

With that said, if he is still in the hot seat at the end of the season, he needs to oversee a serious shakeup of the squad to ensure next year isn’t as disastrous.

That means bringing more first-team quality players and shipping out the deadwood, including one of his own signings who was once tipped for greatness by Lionel Messi.

The Spurs stars who need to be moved on

So, before we get to the player in question, it’s worth looking at the other Tottenham players Ange and Co should be looking to sell or let leave in the summer window, such as Pedro Porro.

Now, it’s true that the Spanish full-back had a decent game on Thursday and can offer something in attack, but this season has made it abundantly clear that he’s a problem when it comes to defending.

For example, there have been multiple times this season where he’s been shown up, like away to Arsenal or at home to City.

It might sound harsh, but we are not the only ones to think this, as journalist Mitch Fretton described his display at home to Ipswich Town as a “horror show”, while one podcaster didn’t mince his words when he described his performance in the defeat to Bournemouth as “absolutely terrible.”

The former Sporting CP dud isn’t the only player who must be moved on this summer, though, as Yves Bissouma very much falls into the same camp.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion ace has had a dreadful campaign this year and so far has featured in just 45% of the team’s Premier League starting lineups.

It’s not hard to see why Postecoglou opts to go with other midfielders these days either, as his last start came in the defeat to Fulham, a game he received a 3/10 match rating for from Alasdair Gold.

Tottenham Hotspur's YvesBissoumaarrives before the match

However, as bad as the Mali international has been, there is another player in the squad, an Ange signing, who’s proved to be even less effective and, therefore, must be moved on.

The Ange signing who needs to be moved on

When it comes down to the worst signing Postecoglou has made during his time in the Spurs dugout, some may go for Radu Dragusin, but for our money, it’s Timo Werner, and unsurprisingly, he’s the player who has to be let go.

Timo Werner for Tottenham

Now, to give the manager and the club credit, while Andy Townsend described the decision as “astonishing,it didn’t seem like the worst idea in the world to sign him on a short-term loan when they did last season.

After all, while he failed at Chelsea and didn’t exactly set the world alight on his return to Germany, he was once one of the most exciting forwards in Europe.

For example, in his final season before moving to Stamford Bridge, he managed to rack up a pretty sensational haul of 47 goal involvements in 45 games, and about five years before that, Messi named him among the ten youngsters he backed to become football’s next superstars.

Unfortunately, we all know what happened next, and while he did alright in the back half of last season, racking up six-goal involvements in 14 appearances, many were still surprised when his loan was extended for another season.

The good news is that Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the club will not be looking to re-sign the former Chelsea flop in the summer, but until the club confirms this, there is always a chance.

Ultimately, while Werner has undoubtedly tried to make it work in North London this year, he’s been a failure at Spurs, and the sooner he is moved on, the better for all involved.

Crystal Palace now looking to hijack Aston Villa deal for £40m Man Utd ace

Crystal Palace and Steve Parish are now trying to persuade an “unplayable” attacker to join them ahead of rival interest from Aston Villa, who are currently ahead in the race.

Crystal Palace putting plans in place for the summer window

The Eagles saw their seven-game unbeaten run come to an end on Saturday as they were beaten 5-2 by Manchester City. Oliver Glasner will perhaps not be totally disappointed by the result despite the manner of their collapse, as his priority will be the FA Cup semi-final in just under two weeks time.

Palace are in the race to sign a midfielder, alongside a number of other Premier League clubs.

Despite there still being a lot to play for, Palace and their hierarchy are already putting plans in place for what looks like a busy summer transfer window. Signing a new centre-back appears high on their list, as Marc Guehi could be on his way out of the club. The Eagles have been linked with a move for Victor Lindelof, who looks set to leave Manchester United at the end of the campaign when his contract expires.

However, he is not their only option, as Palace are believed to have made contact over a deal to sign Kevin Lomonaco from Independiente De Avellaneda – he could cost the South Londoners as little as £5 million this summer.

As well as having eyes on strengthening their defence, Glasner wants to add more quality in other areas of the pitch too, as the Eagles are interested in signing Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland. They are not alone in this race, as several top teams from England and abroad are also chasing the young Englishman.

Crystal Palace want to hijack Aston Villa deal for Rashford

The Premier League side also want to improve their attack, and according to The Sun, Crystal Palace are lining up a move to sign Marcus Rashford from Man United if Aston Villa do not sign him, with Steve Parish and co. regularly monitoring Rashford’s performances while out on loan.

The Midlands side do have the option to sign the Englishman for £40 million at the end of his stay there, but the Eagles leadership are keeping an eye on the situation and are interested in talking to the player and trying to persuade him to move to Selhurst Park.

A source goes on to state that Palace are aware that they would have to keep hold of their better players, such as Jean Philippe-Mateta, Adam Wharton, Eberechi Eze and Ismaila Sarr, to convince the forward to sign from Old Trafford.

A return to United has not been ruled out for Rashford, who has been dubbed “unplayable” by BBC writer Raj Chohan in the past, while a move abroad could also be on the cards, as Paris Saint-Germain are keeping an eye on his situation as well. The 27-year-old has enjoyed a rather successful spell at Villa Park so far, but it remains very much up in the air what he plans to do with his career next.

Forget Isak & Murphy: Newcastle ace is now playing like an £86m superstar

Eddie Howe may not have been at St. James’ Park on Wednesday evening, but the Newcastle United manager’s genius was very much present as his team brushed Crystal Palace aside.

Brushed them aside as if they were nothing. Eagles reduced to mites, returning to Selhurst Park in tattered frustration. For Newcastle, the 5-0 win has lifted them above Nottingham Forest and into third place, further into the firm soil of Champions League qualification.

With six Premier League games left to play, the Carabao Cup champions are playing brilliantly, top of the form charts and determined to return to Europe’s elite stage.

The unity from head to toe is a product of Howe’s tactics and the players’ reaction to the boss’s teachings. So many good performances. However, Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak proved themselves the picks of the bunch once again.

Isak & Murphy run riot

Last season, Anthony Gordon was crowned Newcastle’s Player of the Year after a standout season that saw him guide his team through injury-troubled waters.

Gordon remains a core part of a high-flying, trophy-winning Magpies attack, but this has been Isak and Murphy’s year. Both were on the scoresheet against Palace, with Murphy also setting up Fabian Schar’s goal before the break.

Isak is one of Europe’s best strikers, now boasting 25 goals and six assists across all competitions. It’s no wonder that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool want to sign the £150m-rated man, but their efforts will likely fall short this summer.

Murphy, however, has ripped up the narrative to shift from inconsequential squad player to an utter force in the Premier League. How it’s happened? Hard graft and unbreakable trust from his manager, who has hailed his industriousness and promoted his potency in front of goal.

This new regime, painstakingly constructed, has served as a solvent for the years of hurt and upset on Tyneside, but Newcastle aren’t just an outfit pieced of superstars, with Murphy’s rise evidence that all can step up and reach new heights in Howe’s system.

Indeed, there’s another Newcastle star who’s gone from strength to strength in recent weeks and is now recorded as playing like Barcelona sensation Raphinha, who is one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

Newcastle's own Raphinha

The man in question, as you may well have guessed, is Harvey Barnes, who has risen in stature and responsibility over recent weeks and has been praised, alongside Murphy, as being one of the “two best wide players in the Premier League right now” by pundit Chris Sutton.

Newcastle ran rampant against Oliver Glasner’s Palace, and he got himself another goal.

Talk about a purple patch. Barnes’ strike means he has scored in three successive Premier League matches, four goals in total, having laid on two assists in as many fixtures before.

Barnes’ beauty lies in its simplicity. He carries an Arjen Robben-esque quality of swooping inwards and firing at goal. His strikes bear the crispness of a sure-handled rifle shot, the snap and confidence of a predator starting to pounce.

The 27-year-old played the full 90 against Palace, and though he wasn’t in the thick of the action, he still came away with an excellent goal to add to the haul, underlining his ability to strike when a chance falls his way. The Shields Gazette could award him no less than a 9/10 match rating for his performance, hailing his finishing.

Barnes might not have started all the time since transferring to Tyneside from relegated Leicester City in 2023, but he carries that natural threat that makes him such a dangerous weapon.

Harvey Barnes in action for Newcastle

It’s something that Raphinha has built up himself under Hansi Flick’s wing at Barcelona this term. Though the Brazilian is more of a natural playmaker than Newcastle’s man, there’s little question that there are similarities between the two.

Both players have been clutch for their sides this season, Barnes growing into his increasingly talismanic role in recent weeks following Gordon’s suspension, picked up against Brighton & Hove Albion during that bitter FA Cup defeat.

Both wide forwards are among the most statistically prolific players in their divisions, with both athletically remarkable yet opting against the kind of unrelenting runs and creative passes that others produce. Instead, they conserve their energy, use their intelligence to pick out teammates or strike on goal at the perfect moment.

Barnes might not have enjoyed his counterpart’s consistency, but FBref record that data-wise they are comparable, a testament to the England international’s quality. It’s exciting to think that with further success over the coming weeks, he might indeed finish the season as one of the most talked-about stars.

Of course, the United star might be one of the best wide players in English football right now but Raphinha has actually been dubbed “Europe’s best player” across the 2024/25 campaign by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley.

Barcelona would hardly want to sell such a superstar but are financially troubled and have been reported to have listed him at €100m (roughly £86m) as suitors begin to circle.

It all just goes to show how staggering the project that Howe has created at St. James’ Park really is.

Newcastle were interested in signing the La Blaugrana sensation last summer but opted against it in the end due to PSR concerns. Perhaps they will be among the crowd of contenders this summer, for inevitably the clubs will line up for a player so talented, so in-form.

However, with Barnes already in the mix, alongside a dynamic and deadly frontline, fans won’t lose any sleep if it doesn’t come to play. They already have their own version of the £86m-rated star.
