All-round Paul Walter powers Heat to third straight win

Jake Fraser-McGurk’s maiden BBL fifty was in vain, as Renegades remained winless

Tristan Lavalette21-Dec-2023

Jake Fraser-McGurk smashed his maiden BBL half-century, but Brisbane Heat overcame the onslaught with Paul Walter producing a strong all-round performance in their clinical victory over Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium. After Heat elected to bowl on a slow surface, Fraser-McGurk hammered seven sixes in his 55 off 23 balls but Renegades were pegged back by English import Walter, who claimed 3 for 27 off four overs.Related

Tom Curran banned for four BBL games for intimidating umpire

Renegades’ total seemed imposing when Heat slumped to 45 for 3 before Matthew Renshaw and Sam Billings combined for a 72-run partnership. Fittingly, Walter finished the job with superb late hitting to finish with 30 off 15 balls as unbeaten Heat crossed the line with 11 balls to spare.Renegades, however, are winless and will be disappointed not to have capitalised on Fraser-McGurk’s early fireworks. The first half of Renegades’ innings was completely dominated by Fraser-McGurk, who came to the crease after opener Quinton de Kock fell in the second over to left-arm quick Spencer Johnson for a seven-ball duck.Having failed to unlock his prodigious gifts before this domestic season, Fraser-McGurk is fast becoming a drawcard having just two months ago entered the record books for the fastest ever List A century. His breakout season has also included a maiden First-Class century underlining his huge potential across formats.Fraser-McGurk had no trouble countering the sharp bounce of Johnson, who was playing his first match since being purchased by Gujarat Titans for AU$1.78million.He hammered 22 off his first six deliveries, which included three sixes in a clean-striking aerial assault. While Renegades’ top-order struggled for fluency on a sluggish surface, Fraser-McGurk appeared to be batting on a different pitch and he handled seamer Michael Neser with disdain by sweeping him for six.Heat stand-in captain Colin Munro turned to left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann who was smoked second ball for six over midwicket by Fraser-McGurk. No bowler was spared from the carnage with legspinner Mitchell Swepson pummelled over deep midwicket as Fraser-McGurk reached his half-century off just 21 balls. His whirlwind knock was being lapped up by not only the Renegades faithful, but Australia’s World Cup hero Glenn Maxwell who gushed about Fraser-McGurk on social media. But Fraser-McGurk holed out before drinks off Walter’s first delivery and Renegades predictably slowed considerably. Walter, who was a surprise selection by Heat in the BBL draft, continued his strong start to the season by bowling clever slow shorter deliveries that proved hard to score off.He also claimed the pivotal wickets of veteran Aaron Finch and Will Sutherland, who is key at the death for Renegades, as Heat recovered well from Fraser-McGurk’s hot start.Bu Heat couldn’t quite finish the job with Jono Wells enjoying a late flurry, including a last-ball boundary off Johnson who finished with 1 for 39 off four overs.Heat got off to a fast start in their chase through openers Josh Brown and Munro, who smashed seamer Tom Rogers for a first-ball six to cap a 15-run opening over. But Afghanistan offspinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman came into the attack in the second over in an inspired move. Munro tried to counter by moving his stance well across the stumps but it backfired and he was dismissed lbw after Mujeeb successfully reviewed.Brown holed out to quick Kane Richardson’s first delivery and Heat were in trouble when Nathan McSweeney spooned a return catch to Mujeeb.Batting appeared tough as Heat’s run rate creeped up, but Renshaw made his move in the eighth over with consecutive boundaries off spinner Nic Maddinson.Renshaw found good rhythm with Billings as the pair played smartly by nudging the ball around in a constant rotation of the strike. Occasionally they would go for broke like when Billings whacked Sutherland for a huge six in the 12th over to bring up the half-century partnership.Heat appeared to be cruising until Maddinson desperately turned to legspinner Adam Zampa, who gave Renegades hope by dismissing Billings for 40 in the 14th over. But Heat timed the power surge perfectly with Walter pummelling Richardson for 20 runs in a game-changing 17th over.Walter’s purple patch continued with a stunning straight six off Zampa as Heat soon clinched their third straight victory to start the season.

Hazlewood's WOWOWO over trumps Jamal's six-for as Pakistan collapse again

Visitors went 14 ahead on first innings, even as Mitchell Marsh struck his fourth half-century of the series

Tristan Lavalette05-Jan-2024Babar Azam fell late on day three to complete a frustrating series, as Pakistan crumbled in their second innings with Australia closing in on a victory at the SCG. Pakistan’s hopes of setting Australia a challenging total nosedived when quick Josh Hazlewood claimed Saud Shakeel, nightwatcher Sajid Khan and Salman Agha in the penultimate over of the day’s play.A rampant Hazlewood finished with 4 for 9 from five overs as Pakistan reached stumps in ruins at 68 for 7 with a lead of only 82 runs. Mohammad Rizwan and Aamer Jamal, who had both struck half-centuries in Pakistan’s first innings, were at the crease.Pakistan’s late collapse has eroded their hopes of snapping a 16-Test losing streak in Australia, but the surface is playing tricks with rough patches causing variable bounce and sharp spin.In a manic final session, Pakistan gained a slim first-innings lead of 14 runs after Jamal crashed through Australia’s lower order. But the visitors made a disastrous start to their second innings when opener Adbullah Shafique was clean bowled by a gem of a delivery from quick Mitchell Starc in the first over. After an impressive start to the series, Shafique fell away and finished with a pair, but could do little against a Starc delivery that swung in late and rattled the stumps.Pakistan slid further in the next over when captain Shan Masood nicked off for a golden duck in a loose shot off Hazlewood. The pressure was on debutant Saim Ayub, who had endured a tough initiation to Test cricket with a second-ball duck in the first innings, and two dropped catches when Australia were batting.Aamer Jamal finished with a six-wicket haul•Getty ImagesBut Ayub’s nerves eased when he pounced on width from Starc, including a remarkable upper cut for six to showcase his innate aggression. His confidence grew, and he treated quick Pat Cummins with disdain by clobbering his first delivery over mid-on in an audacious stroke. He then settled alongside Babar, who had only previously averaged 20.6 in the series and been dismissed by Cummins on three occasions. They built a 57-run partnership until Ayub, on 33, succumbed to Nathan Lyon and was trapped on the pads in a decision that failed to be overturned on review. Thus, Pakistan desperately needed Babar to survive through to stumps, but on 23 he could only outside edge part-timer Travis Head, as Alex Carey claimed an agile catch.Earlier in the day, Australia had recovered well after their first innings fell away in a flash. They appeared to be inching towards a valuable lead when the in-form Mitchell Marsh scored his fourth half-century of the series, and combined with Carey in a partnership of 84 runs. Marsh capitalised after being dropped by Ayub on 7, and counterattacked against the second new ball.Carey had entered the summer under pressure after being dropped early in Australia’s title run at the World Cup, but a crucial second-innings half-century in the Boxing Day Test had provided him with a much-needed boost. He continued his momentum with several spectacular strokes through his favoured off side, as the partnership raced past a half-century stand.Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh added 84 for the sixth wicket•Getty ImagesBut Carey was bowled by Sajid for 38 on the stroke of tea to trigger a stunning collapse of 5 for 10. Marsh fell on 54 in the second over after the tea interval when he mistimed Jamal to mid-off, and two balls later, Cummins was out lbw after missing a full toss in a decision overturned by DRS. Jamal claimed his second five-wicket haul when he dismissed Lyon, before also removing Hazlewood for a duck to finish with 6 for 69 from 21.4 overs. But in a topsy-turvy day’s play, Australia had threatened to gain control when Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith overcame a short-ball barrage in a 79-run third-wicket partnership, only to fall before lunch.Jamal sought a short-ball approach as he continued on from his plan against the batters before play had stopped on day two. With the slips taken out and a slew of fielders on the leg side, Jamal bent his back and bowled a lively spell but was thwarted. Smith, who has struggled for some time against short-pitched bowling, did have a narrow escape when he almost hit to short midwicket.Looking to shrug off a lean 2023, where he averaged 35 in Test cricket, Labuschagne was patient but assured, and reached his half-century with a superb pull shot as he dealt with seamer Hasan Ali’s modest pace with ease.Pakistan reverted their tactics when left-arm quick Mir Hamza re-entered the attack, as the off side was filled with catchers. The change of plan worked when Smith, on 38, hit straight to cover and looked in disbelief at the pitch before trudging off. In the next over, Salman clean bowled Labuschagne for 60 with a spectacular delivery that spun sharply off the rough. But by stumps, Australia’s bid for a series sweep remained on track, with the stage perfectly set for retiring opener David Warner to enjoy a fairytale farewell on day four, even as the third day of the traditional New Year’s Test was dedicated to Australia great Glenn McGrath’s late wife Jane, who had died of breast cancer in 2008.

West Indies face mission impossible amid future of Test cricket debate

Big Picture

On paper this looks like the ultimate mismatch. A powerful and successful Australia side, against a West Indies team that will feature at least three debutants and only five players with previous experience in the country. It will probably play out that way, too, but that does not mean there won’t be intrigue along the way.For Australia, it’s the start of a new era following David Warner’s retirement. The solution to filling his spot took a somewhat unexpected twist when it was Steven Smith who was handed the role, having been the last person considered. He has never opened in first-class cricket, and the decision has prompted significant debate, but there would be little surprise if he makes a success of it.Related

  • After a tough year, Green returns to 'natural game' at No. 4 in Test side

  • Odds stacked against brave and talented West Indians in Australia

A byproduct is that Cameron Green is able to return to the fold at No. 4, but otherwise it’s a case of same again for the home side. The fast bowlers are all good to keep going, helped by the fact that the Pakistan Tests finished in four days although Australia were pushed harder than some expected. So to West Indies. For a myriad of reasons this is a vastly different squad to the one that toured Australia a little more than a year ago – one of the game’s many scheduling quirks meaning they are back for consecutive summers. They put up some stubborn resistance with the bat in Perth on the last trip, led by captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, but were overwhelmed in Adelaide and across the two games took just 19 of a possible 40 wickets.Kemar Roach, who famously roughed up Ricky Ponting in 2009, will need to make much more of an impact than an average of 90.62 shows he has managed in Australia before, with support from new vice-captain Alzarri Joseph. They do at least have an Australian top order to target that will be under a level of scrutiny given the changes. Most interest, and excitement, among the new names in the West Indies squad is around quick bowler Shamar Joseph, from the village of Baracara in Guyana which is only accessible by boat, who impressed on the A tour of South Africa last year and produced an encouraging performance in the warm-up match against the Cricket Australia XI. For him, and plenty of others, this tour is a chance to make a name for themselves.

In the spotlight: Cameron Green and Tagenarine Chanderpaul

Cameron Green has long been anointed Australia’s next superstar, and he showed glimpses in his first stint of Test cricket to suggest that tag was justified. But through a combination of factors, including adjusting to quickly changing between formats, a minor injury that ruled him out of the Headingley Test in the Ashes, and Mitchell Marsh’s subsequent outstanding form, he now needs to re-establish himself. No. 4 is viewed as his long-term home, although it was probably thought it would come through Smith’s retirement, not a batting order move. It will also be interesting how much Pat Cummins uses him with the ball.Tagenarine Chanderpaul made a promising start to his Test career on last season’s tour of Australia with a half-century on debut followed by a pair of 40s. The match after that he scored a double-century against Zimbabwe but things have been a bit tougher since then against South Africa and India. Alongside his captain, he will be key to blunting Australia’s strong attack and giving the inexperienced middle order a chance to bed in.

Team news: Steven Smith’s opening debut; three debuts likely for West Indies

Australia’s XI was locked in last week with the squad announcement when the new spots for Smith and Green were confirmed. Matt Renshaw and Scott Boland are the reserve players.Australia 1 Usman Khawaja, 2 Steven Smith, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Cameron Green, 5 Travis Head, 6 Mitchell Marsh 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins (capt), 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodKraigg Brathwaite confirmed that Kavem Hodge and Justin Greaves will debut in the middle order along with Shamar Joseph in the pace attack.West Indies 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 3 Kirk McKenzie, 4 Alick Athanaze, 5 Kavem Hodge, 6 Justin Greaves, 7 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Gudakesh Motie, 11 Shamar Joseph

Pitch and conditions

For the first time since 2018 it will be a day game in Adelaide. That has not changed things hugely for curator Damian Hough who is renowned for making excellent Test surfaces. He expects this one to have good pace. “We’ve had a really good lead-in with the weather being able to get some good moisture throughout the pitch,” he said. The forecast is settled throughout.

Stats and trivia

  • In the likely XIs, Australia have 689 Test caps compared to West Indies’ 235 (of which Brathwaite and Roach have 166) before the start of the game
  • Josh Hazlewood needs one wicket to reach 250 in Tests and Mitchell Starc needs five for 350
  • Marnus Labuschagne needs four runs for 4000 in Tests and Travis Head 15 for 3000

Quotes

“It’s always good here. I think it’s consistently a great balance, if you put in the right areas you feel like there’s enough there for the whole five days. But there’s also runs to be scored. It’s pretty bouncy and true so looks the same.”
