Deitz's message to West Indies: play with freedom and have fun

Captain Hayley Matthews has promised her team will take an aggressive approach

Healy: Build-up to the next T20 World Cup starts now

There will be an Australian influence on West Indies as they aim to topple the world champions on their home soil over the next two weeks with Shane Deitz taking charge for his first series as the new head coach.Deitz, the former South Australia wicketkeeper-batter who has previously coached the Bangladesh and Netherlands women’s sides, took up his role last month but this tour has been the first chance for him to get the squad together.Although Australia stumbled in the Ashes, losing both white-ball series to retain the urn with an overall draw, they will start strong favourites against West Indies, for whom this is a first bilateral tour of the country since 2014. They have won their last five T20Is, following a run of 15 consecutive defeats, but the end of the losing streak came too late to save their T20 World Cup campaign in South Africa.Deitz has a simple message for them ahead of the opening T20I in Sydney: play with freedom and have fun.Related

“Got out there and enjoy it. Enjoy the challenge and play with freedom,” Deitz told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve got nothing to lose. Australia is the world’s best team for a long time now. We’ve got to find an identity for how we want to play. Using that natural ability and talent and letting that flow is the way I’m looking to do it. Play with a smile on your face, have fun.”It’s a philosophy that captain Hayley Matthews, who will join Melbourne Renegades for the WBBL after this tour, is fully onboard with as the pair look to build towards next year’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.Matthews made her ODI debut as a 16-year-old on the 2014 tour and scored half-centuries in each of the three ODIs. She was elevated to the captaincy last year to replace Stafanie Taylor.”We are definitely up for the challenge,” she said. “At the end of the day if we are going to compete with the best teams in the world that’s the brand of cricket we are going to have to play. Teams are now scoring 160-170 runs in T20 games and don’t reckon anyone’s going to score or win games by just nudging it around.”Not only the younger players, but everyone within the team has to have freedom to go out there and push their boundaries, push their limits and that’s what we are encouraging.”Matthews, who is averaging 43.33 with the bat 15.78 with the ball in T20Is this year, having been West Indies’ leading run-scorer and wicket-taker at the 2022 ODI World Cup, will be pivotal to what they want to achieve. “Her performances over the last 12 months or longer have been unbelievable,” Deitz said. “She’s one of the best in the world, for sure. I’ve been so impressed with her leadership and captaincy within the group. It’s amazing for her age to be such a great leader. We are enjoying our time working together, we think along the same lines. Think the team’s in good hands with her.”Matthews added: “He’s gelled really well with the group and tried to get into the culture of the girls a little bit. At the same he’s spoken a lot about us progressing in the right direction and getting the youngsters to a certain standard and becoming a more consistent team.”West Indies warmed-up for the T20I series with a four-wicket win over New South Wales although they slipped to 8 for 3 in their chase. The experienced Shemaine Campbelle top-scored with 33 while 18-year-old Zaida James, one of a group of young players included for the tour, helped complete the chase.”There’s definitely a lot of youth coming through, [it’s about] harnessing that talent and putting in a world-class high-performance programme around them to produce international standard players,” Deitz said. “There’s definitely lots to work with. We want to win every game, but you have to have a longer-term vision to develop players and allow them to make mistakes along the way.”We want to find a nucleus of players for that [T20] World Cup, it’s a year away now, we are definitely building towards that, so we have to work with the players to get them ready.”Australia captain Alyssa Healy, who is continuing in the role in the absence of Meg Lanning and plays her 250th international on Sunday, is wary of West Indies’ threat.”I think they are a really damaging side,” she said. “Maybe the results over the last 12 months don’t quite represent the side they are and how much damage they can do. They’ve got two of the best players in the world at the top of the order and some really damaging new-ball options as well. If Hayley Matthews gets going at North Sydney Oval it will be really hard to stop.”We aren’t taking them lightly at all, don’t think you can take any team in world cricket lightly at the moment, everyone is beating everyone which is great for our sport, so we’ll have to put our best foot forward.”

Los Blancos boast immense attacking talent, including Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, but Alonso emphasised team unity over individual roles. He believes Garcia can blend perfectly with the rest of the squad, adding another valuable option to Madrid’s forward line. The coach also praised the team’s defensive work rate, highlighting the balance he’s trying to build.

  • WHAT XABI ALONSO SAID

Alonso spoke to the media after the game and praised Garcia's performance, saying: "I had no doubts about Gonzalo. What he's doing isn't a surprise. He's done it many times at Castilla. At least for him. He's the typical number nine, who knows how to wait for his opportunity, who moves well. I'm very happy for him. He has Raul qualities in his movements. Matthew Mott dismisses Eoin Morgan suggestion of squad rift as England hit rock-bottom

Chris Woakes admits team’s ‘frustration’ after bafflingly poor displays in World Cup defence

Andrew Miller29-Oct-2023Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, has denied suggestions from Eoin Morgan, the team’s former World Cup-winning captain, that an “unsettled” dressing room is the root cause of their desperate form at this year’s event.Speaking in the wake of India’s 100-run victory in Lucknow, which has left England propping up the ten-team table after five comprehensive defeats in six matches, Mott insisted that the squad remained “incredibly tight-knit” and that their training sessions remained “full of fun” despite their bleak tournament prospects.”There’s every opportunity when you’re losing to splinter and go other ways,” Mott said. “[But] people are putting their arms around each other trying to help them. It’s easy to do that when you’re winning, but a lot harder when you’re losing and I’m proud we just keep trying to get up.”Morgan, however, remains a close confidant for many of the players, eight of whom featured in the 2019 World Cup-winning squad. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the India match, he had suggested that “something else [is] going on … there has to be,” adding that the team’s under-performance compared to their pre-tournament expectations was unparalleled across sports.Morgan went further still after this latest defeat, claiming that the mood of the dressing room would be as flat as any that he had experienced in his own England career – with his personal nadir coming in Adelaide in the 2015 World Cup, when their group-stage defeat to Bangladesh confirmed their premature exit from the competition.”But there was a different level of expectation in that changing-room,” Morgan said. “You were only expected to qualify for the quarter-finals. You weren’t expected to compete for silverware.”They wanted to win this tournament. After this 50-over World Cup, the next one is in 2027. Eight or nine of these guys will not be here, they will be too old and the majority will have retired. In a special time for English white-ball cricket, there will be a huge sense of a missed opportunity, because the quality in that changing-room is hard to come by.”Mott, however, was unmoved by the suggestion of disquiet in the camp.”Eoin’s entitled to his opinion and he’s obviously been away for a couple of weeks with the birth of his child,” he said. “He hasn’t been in and around the rooms. I’ll certainly take that up with him and have a chat to him. We’ve got a really good relationship with him so if he’s seeing something I’m not, I’ll definitely have that conversation.”Related

Speaking on behalf of the players, Chris Woakes, England’s stand-out performer in Lucknow – and a veteran of both the 2015 and 2019 tournaments – said that the overriding emotion within the squad was “frustration” that they hadn’t been able to produce anything approaching their best cricket at any stage of the campaign.”If we could buy some confidence at the minute, we’d spend a lot of money on it,” Woakes told Sky Sports. “It’s hard to bottle that up, isn’t it? When you haven’t got confidence, you tend to play some rash shots, or make some decisions where you’d like to have that go again.”But that’s top elite-level sport, isn’t it? You know you have no given right to perform well at this level. World Cups are incredibly hard to win, and we’ve been fortunate to be on the good side of it in 2019 and 2022. But coming into Indian conditions, you’ve got to have every little part of your game ticking. If not everyone’s playing well, you need to dovetail, and we certainly haven’t done that either.”Reflecting on the 2015 debacle compared to the current campaign, Woakes agreed with Morgan’s assessment that the players themselves had expected better this time around.”2015 was a low point. We were playing to a brand of cricket which was old-school, and wasn’t up to date with the way people were moving the game forward. This is very different. Back then, I don’t think we had the players that could play that way. Whereas in the dressing room here, I feel we do have the players that can play the way, and we’ve shown that in the past.”But we’re not a dressing room at the minute that’s got the confidence of winning games. And in cricket, winning does breed confidence and builds momentum. If you could bottle up that feeling that you have when you win games of cricket and take it forward, you could see a whole different team come out and play against Australia next week.”

Sutherland denies Gardner in opening-night WBBL thriller

Meg Lanning had earlier struck a half-century in an absorbing contest which came down to the last ball

Melbourne Stars 165 for 8 (Lanning 55, Sutherland 34, Gardner 2-23, Cheatle 2-37) beat Sydney Sixers 163 for 9 (Gardner 72, Brown 35, Sutherland 4-27) by two runsAnnabel Sutherland produced the final twist to a thrilling opening match of the WBBL season with her double-wicket over denying Sydney Sixers after stand-in captain Ash Gardner had looked set to conjure a remarkable comeback for the home side.Gardner, leading the side in the absence of the suspended Ellyse Perry, marshalled a stand of 84 in 7.4 overs alongside Maitlan Brown after Sixers, chasing 166, had slumped to 71 for 6 in the 11th over. However, having got the equation down to 15 off 12 balls, Gardner then struck a boundary off Sutherland to make it 11 from 11 when she was cleaned up. Sutherland then sent down a big full toss that was called no-ball, but three deliveries later had Brown caught in the deep to claim her best WBBL figures which had followed an important contribution with the bat.It left eight needed from the final over which proved out of reach for Linsey Smith and Lauren Cheatle against England allrounder Alice Capsey although the last delivery was a borderline wide. “When we rewatched it, we were, surely that’s got to be a wide,” Gardner said. “I can’t remember where Linsey was standing, whether the wide line did move, guess they’re those things, those little moments. We probably shouldn’t have got it to that point, we should have iced it earlier in the game.”The result meant that Stars captain Meg Lanning, who missed all of last season, began with a victory which she had helped lay the platform for with a 34-ball 55.Lanning’s innings, alongside useful contributions from Sutherland and Maia Bouchier lifted Stars to a healthy total. Her innings included a pulled six onto the hill and her trademark square drive was on display. But she had earlier been grateful for the DRS when given out caught behind on 12 with the replay confirming she had clipped her pad. Lanning had shown good form on her return for Victoria in the WNCL with three half-centuries in four innings and continued that in the green of Stars, reaching her fifty in 28 balls.Meg Lanning reached a 28-ball fifty•Getty Images

After Gardner had removed Lanning, Sutherland and Bouchier gave Stars a platform for a strong finish with 42 runs coming in four overs but Sixers were able to pull things back a little despite Stars holding their power surge overs until the 18th and 19th.Kim Garth, who had been impressive against West Indies, started the chase with a maiden to immediately apply pressure to the home side. It was 10 balls before Garth conceded a run then Suzie Bates skied her high to mid-off.Sixers then suffered another major blow when Alyssa Healy, two balls after sending Sophie Day for six, clothed to mid-on.One of the notable moments of the game came when 18-year-old fast bowler Milly Illingworth struck in her first over trapping fellow debutant, 17-year-old Kate Pelle, lbw with a quick full delivery. Speaking the day before, Lanning, her Victoria team-mate, had noted her pace and the first ball of Illingworth’s over was clocked at 121kph.Sixers’ hopes further faded when Erin Burns, who had starred as a finisher last season, fell for a duck and when Sutherland struck in consecutive overs it appeared game over. Because of Gardner it wasn’t, until Sutherland came back at the death.

The last 16 of the revamped Club World Cup drew to a close on Tuesday, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund progressing to the quarter-finals as expected, after wins over Juventus and Monterrey, respectively. However, the first round of knockout games in the United States still produced plenty of shocks, the biggest of which saw Al-Hilal dump Manchester City out of the tournament with a sensational 4-3 win over Pep Guardiola's side.

There was also a massive surprise in Charlotte as Fluminense defeated Champions League runners-up Inter by playing the kind of catenaccio game for which the Nerazzurri were once famous.

Elsewhere, Palmeiras sprung a minor surprise by winning their all-Brazilian battle with Botafogo, Chelsea beat Benfica after extra-time, Bayern Munich got the better of Flamengo in a very entertaining encounter, while Paris Saint-Germain eliminated the 'hosts', Inter Miami, with a 4-0 rout of Lionel Messi & Co.

So, how do things stand now? Who's got a real shot at lifting the trophy at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13? And who's likely to be heading home after this weekend's quarter-finals? GOAL rates and ranks the eight remaining participants…

Getty Images Sport8Borussia Dortmund ⬆️

Dortmund have rather gone under the radar at the Club World Cup, primarily because their group-stage campaign was more than a little underwhelming. However, they demonstrated a mix of attacking class and defensive resilience to see off a dangerous Monterrey side in the last 16 to set up a quarter-final clash with Real Madrid, which is obviously a repeat of the 2024 Champions League final.

It's hard not to see Saturday's game going the same way, but BVB will be buoyed by the fact that star striker Serhou Guirassy opened his Club World Cup account with a decisive double in Atlanta on Tuesday.

AdvertisementAFP7Palmeiras ⬆️

Palmeiras may have got through the group stage undefeated, but their only win had come against Al Ahly, so they were undeniably underdogs going into their all-Brazilian last-16 showdown with Botafogo, who had upset PSG on matchday two. However, Abel Ferreira's side performed excellently against their compatriots and were good value for their 1-0 victory, which came courtesy of Paulinho's extra-time cool finish.

So, while key defender Gustavo Gomez will definitely be missed against Chelsea, after getting himself sent off for two bookable offences against Botafogo, Palmeiras will be able once again call on the services of Estevao Willian, the Stamford Bridge-bound teenager who has been one of the most exciting attacking talents on show in the tournament so far.

AFP6Al-Hilal ⬆️

While the strength of the Brazilian contingent has rightly received plenty of attention, Al-Hilal are undoubtedly the revelation of the 2025 Club World Cup. The Saudi Arabians may have spent a colossal amount of cash strengthening their squad over the past few years, but nobody expected them to make the quarter-finals in the States.

Al-Hilal are there on merit, though. After drawing with Real Madrid during an undefeated group-stage campaign, they produced the shock of the tournament so far by beating free-spending Manchester City in a seven-goal thriller in Orlando. As Simone Inzaghi said, they essentially had to "climb Mount Everest without oxygen – but we were great."

Consequently, Al-Hilal have absolutely nothing to fear from Fluminense – not with Yassine Bounou performing miracles in goal, Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic excelling in midfield and Marcos Leonardo proving a menace in attack.

Getty5Bayern Munich ⬇️

After following up a record-breaking rout of Auckland City with a comfortable win over Boca Juniors, Bayern Munich blew top spot in Group C by losing 1-0 to Benfica. However, Vincent Kompany had rung the changes for the Bavarians' final group, in an understandable attempt to give some of his key men a break from the sweltering conditions in the States, and a stronger Bayern side re-established themselves as a potential title-winner in the last-16 win over Flamengo.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the 4-2 win over a team that hadn't tasted defeat for 11 games was the performance of Harry Kane, who struggled at times in the group stage but found the back of the net with two fine finishes in Miami. Bayern will undoubtedly need their talisman performing at the peak of his considerable powers if they're get past PSG on Saturday.

Shaheen Afridi to lead Pakistan in T20Is; Shan Masood appointed Test captain

Pakistan have appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi as their new T20I captain and Shan Masood as their Test captain shortly after Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy in all three formats. With no ODIs scheduled in the near future, the PCB has not named an ODI captain just yet.Shortly after the resignation, the PCB issued a statement saying Babar was offered the option to continue as Test captain, while the decision to remove him as white-ball skipper was presented to him as fait accompli. “After consultation with his family, Babar decided to step down and PCB stands behind his decision. PCB respects his decision and continues to support him as a player,””Babar Azam is truly a world-class player and we want him to continue to thrive as a player,” Zaka Ashraf said. “He is one of the best batters Pakistan has ever produced. He is our asset, and we will continue to support him.”Masood’s captaincy marks a remarkable ascent for a man who made his Test debut over a decade ago but never managed to nail a place in the side. He was repeatedly dropped after two or three Test matches where impressive scores were followed by extended barren runs, and went on to spend lengthy periods out of the side. A return to the side late last year for Tests against England and New Zealand produced indifferent scores, though the series against Sri Lanka in July was capped with his first half-century in 17 innings. His first assignment is the one that Pakistan have historically found hardest of all, an away series in Australia. Pakistan have lost their last 14 successive Tests on the bounce, a run that stretches back to 1999, including five series whitewashes.Afridi, 23, was widely tipped to succeed Babar Azam in the shortest format, and will see his first assignment come immediately after that three-Test series against Australia ends. Pakistan travel to New Zealand following the Tests in Australia to play five T20Is. That is the first series in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup next year, which takes place in West Indies and the USA in June 2024.Afridi was appointed captain of his Pakistan Super League franchise – Lahore Qalandars – and enjoyed immediate success. The Qalandars have won both PSL trophies under his stewardship, becoming the first side to successfully defend the trophy. The PCB said an ODI captain would be appointed “in due course”.

Mohammad Hafeez appointed Team Director

The PCB also announced, shortly after Masood and Shaheen were appointed captains, that Mohammad Hafeez will be the team director, the role Mickey Arthur had occupied until now. While Aurthur has not been removed, he will not travel with the team. It makes official what is a significant demotion for him, while Hafeez, who does not have any previous experience as coach or director, will lead the coaching staff in Australia.Head coach Grant Bradburn will also not travel with the Pakistan team to Australia and New Zealand, with a replacement expected to be announced shortly. Younis Khan is widely tipped to take over the role. It is understood neither Arthur nor Bradburn have been relieved from their duties, an action this temporary management committee likely lacks the authority to take. It has not yet been announced what roles will be assigned to Arthur and Bradburn, but resignations from the pair are not understood to be imminent.
