Sussex implode in face of hefty deficit as innings defeat looms

Durham scored runs with ease at Seat Unique Riverside before taking three quick wickets to leave Sussex staring at an innings defeat by stumps on day two in their County Championship match. In blue-sky conditions, Scott Borthwick wasted no time in pushing Durham forward, as he and Michael Jones reached their half-centuries before lunch as the hosts wiped out the remaining deficit.James Coles struck shortly after lunch, removing Borthwick lbw for a fast-paced 82, before Jones was caught down the legside by debutant keeper Charlie Tear four short of a century.Nic Maddinson added fifty partnerships with David Bedingham and Chris Benjamin before he chopped on for 90 off Faheem Ashraf as Durham pushed towards a declaration.Bad light played its part again as the teams left the field just before 5pm with Durham just short of maximum batting points, but they returned shortly after to gain the final batting point and declare with a lead of 297.Durham then turned the screws as Ali Orr was run out due to a mix-up with Tom Haines, before Ben Raine removed Tom Alsop and Tom Clark for ducks. Bad light ended play early again to leave Sussex 6 for 3, still 291 behind.

Mac Allister said: "I shared a dressing room with Moi, he was a fantastic player, so good physically.

On putting Rodri third on the list: "This doesn't mean that I don't rate Rodri! It's the complete opposite. He earned the Ballon D'or, he's a fantastic player. He's not the hardest opponent, because he's never on the ball. He always plays one or two touches, and you cannot even get near him. I put it like this because of the physical attributes."

Rony e Scarpa brilham, Palmeiras atropela o Botafogo e reassume a liderança do Brasileirão

Depois do primeiro tempo bem abaixo, Luís Castro mudou o meio-campo, tirando Oyama e Tchê Tchê, e colocando Kayque e Del Piage.

E agora?

Celebrating Jhulan Goswami, from Lord's to Eden Gardens

“I have to [keep my emotions in check] because I can’t come with emotion on the cricket field – my character is ruthless”

From Lord’s to Eden Gardens, Jhulan Goswami’s immense contribution to world cricket in her career at the highest level for over two decades was celebrated with gusto on Saturday, the day of her farewell appearance for India. At Lord’s, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur brought Goswami out with her for the toss ahead of the final ODI, and there were tearful scenes at the team huddle. While across at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Goswami’s home venue, plans to name a stand after her were unveiled.Goswami has had a good finish to her long international career, which started in January 2002, as she bowled tight spells in the first two ODIs, both of which India won to seal the series with the match on Saturday left to play. The last time India won an ODI series in England was in 1999.Related

On Saturday, the celebrations started around the time of the toss. The outgoing England team coach Lisa Keightley presented Goswami with a shirt signed by the England players. Harmanpreet allowed Goswami to be captain, in a fashion, for a while. And then there were lots of photographs.”When I debuted, that time she was the captain,” Harmanpreet would say at the post-match presentation. “Even in the huddle before the game, I told her when I was going through the best time, many people were around me and supporting me but in my rough times, she was the only one who was backing and supporting me and I just wanted to say thank you to her. I know it was her last game but she will always be with us and she is just a call away when we need her. She is my go-to person. In my low phase, I always call her and discuss what I have to do. She is someone who [always] guided me.”Harmanpreet Kaur played her part by letting Jhulan Goswami go out for the toss•ECB via Getty Images

Goswami said on the official broadcast: “Thanks to BCCI and Cricket Association of Bengal [CAB], my family, coaches, captains, thanks for this opportunity. It’s a special moment. I started in 2002 against England [in India] and ending in England. Most important thing is we are 2-0 up in the series.”Each and every moment has a lot of emotions. In 2017 [ODI] World Cup, we came back and fought, nobody initially thought we would get into the final, the way we played that tournament was something different. From there, women’s cricket in India slowly, gradually it picked up, and now we have our own path and we can motivate young girls to play sports and have a career in cricket.”I have to [keep my emotions in check] because I can’t come with emotion on the cricket field. My character is ruthless; you have to play hard cricket and give your best. A lot of team-mates, people like Harman and Smriti [Mandhana], have seen me, with ups and downs, we’ve fought and stayed together through ups and downs. It’s good that the emotions come out early and after we can come back fresh for the game. I’m happy to see the way Harman and Smriti have carried this team. The way Harman’s batting has been great. She’s different, on her day it’s difficult to get her out. Some days, it’s difficult for me to get her. I’m glad with the way players like Yastika [Bhatia] and Harleen [Deol] are coming. Hope they come well in the future.”Not long after that, CAB, Goswami’s home cricket association in India, announced their own honour for the star bowler. CAB had earlier arranged a screening of the farewell match at an auditorium in the city, with young women cricketers and CAB officials and members in attendance.”We are planning to name a stand after Jhulan Goswami at Eden Gardens. She is a special cricketer and deserves to be with the legends,” Avishek Dalmiya, the CAB president, said. “We will approach the army [the owners of the stadium] for the necessary permission. We are also planning a special felicitation for her on the annual day.”At CAB we give equal importance to women’s cricket and hence we see so many talented cricketers. They are of course inspired by Jhulan’s achievements. Though she has retired from international cricket we would love her to play in the woman’s IPL [which is expected to start next year].”Snehasish Ganguly, the CAB secretary, added: “We have made her the mentor of the Bengal women’s cricket as we want to get her valuable advice. We have plans to involve her in development of women’s cricket. We also want her to play domestic cricket if she wants.”Jhulan Goswami knocks over Kate Cross in her final game•Getty Images

A day after her final international match, Goswami took to social media to put out an official statement about her retirement, thanking a number of people who had played a part in her long cricketing journey. “Like every journey has an end, my cricket journey of over 20 years ends today as I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket,” she wrote. “As Ernest Hemingway said, ‘It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters in the end’. For me this journey has been the most satisfying. It has been exhilarating, thrilling to say the least adventurous.”Cricket has given me several gifts over the years, the greatest and the best without doubt, has been the people I have met along this journey. The friends I made, my competitors, team-mates, the journalists I interacted with, match officials, board administrators and people who loved watching me play.”I have always been honest as a cricketer and hope, I have been able to contribute to the growth of women’s cricket in India and the world,” she wrote. “I hope I have been successful in inspiring the next generation of girls to play this beautiful game. Ever since watching the Women’s World Cup final at Eden Gardens back in 1997, it was my dream to play for India, and I am thankful to the BCCI, CAB, Women’s Cricket Association of India (WCAI) and Air India officials for reposing faith in me and giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dream.”I want to thank the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for taking care of my injuries and keeping me fit as a fiddle over the years. I am grateful to all the coaches, trainers, physios, and ground staff who have been an integral part of this journey. A huge shout out to all the captains I have played under. Their faith in my abilities helped build my confidence.”I want to take a moment to thank my family (my parents, siblings) who stood by me in every situation. Not to forget my friends, who have been my best critics and biggest supporters. Last but not the least, I want to thank my childhood coach for having backed me in my endeavour. I also want to express my gratitude towards my fans, journalists, broadcasters for backing me and giving wings to women’s cricket.”

Derby County move for 45 y/o manager to replace Warne; he’s keen for talks

Derby County are believed to have made an approach to bring in an “incredible” manager as Paul Warne’s successor, according to a new claim regarding their search for a new boss.

Derby eyeing Paul Warne replacements

The Rams made the difficult decision to part company with Warne last week, having endured a seven-match losing streak in the Championship.

The recent defeat to Sheffield United left Derby languishing in the relegation zone in 22nd place, with the club feeling that it was the right time to make a change before the situation got worse.

The search is now on to find a successor to Warne, and according to one claim, Derby were set to make an approach for Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace, looking to snap him up from their Championship rivals. In fact, the 45-year-old even admitted as much this weekend after his side’s FA Cup defeat to Wolves, saying:

“I’ve just come off the pitch and realised that they’ve made an official approach. I’ll have to chat with the owners and see what’s happened.”

Derby make approach for Eustace

Now, according to The Express & Star, Eustace is keen to discuss the idea of replacing Warne at Derby, possibly being willing to up sticks and leave a team chasing promotion to the Premier League midway through the season. The BBC have said that Derby’s planned approach for Eustace has become official to Blackburn, as stated by the manager himself.

It is pointed out that the Rams have reportedly “triggered a £500,000 compensation clause” in the Englishman’s contract, with a return to the club where he finished his playing career on the cards.

Birmingham City's former manager John Eustace.

Eustace could be such an exciting appointment for Derby, and it could also make waves in the Championship, considering he would be moving from one of the best teams in the division to one of its biggest strugglers.

He has received so much praise in his managerial career to date, with pundit Ali Maxwell saying of him towards the end of last year:

“They are into the top six in the Championship with six wins in a row; what and who is underpinning this incredible start to the season which many people, myself included, did not see coming – John Eustace. They are into the top six in the Championship with six wins in a row; what and who is underpinning this incredible start to the season which many people, myself included, did not see coming – John Eustace.”

Eustace, 45, may still be relatively new to life as a manager, but the early signs in his career have been positive, so it is easy to see why Derby consider him the front-runner to bring in.

The fact that he has steered his Blackburn side into sixth place in the Championship, and therefore into the playoff places, suggests Derby would be bringing in a manager capable of guiding them away from relegation between now and the end of the season, prior to leading them to greater things beyond the current campaign.

'That's disrespectful to a team like Dallas' – USMNT icon Alexi Lalas criticizes Inter Miami for resting Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and other stars against FC Dallas

    WHAT HAPPENED

With Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba not in the lineup against FC Dallas, it had many fans disappointed especially as the Herons ended up losing 4-3. This included former USMNT star Alexi Lalas, as he voiced strong disapproval of Inter Miami's decision to rest several star players during recent home fixtures despite them being fit. The former MLS star took issue with what he perceives as a pattern of selective availability, especially when fans are paying premium prices to watch them play.

“Yeah. So there's part of me, I try to put myself in the shoes of an Inter Miami season ticket holder, right. You you pay to see this team,” Lalas said on his podcast. “You pay to see this team that has been sold to you in every sense of the word on a consistent basis for the stars that they have obviously Messi and and and company."

He added, “So this is your home stadium. You go out and you see this team and it bears very little resemblance to what the full team is. And I'm not saying that there isn't moments where players are going to have to rest. We've even seen Messi at times rest because of whatever injury he may have or just be being tired.

“I get that. But I do think that Inter Miami, you have a responsibility when you are playing, certainly when you're playing at home and more so when you are playing at home, to give the people what they have paid their money for.”

Lalas also expanded on how disrespectful it was towards FC Dallas and how the away side made them pay for that.

“And that is a quality team. And maybe they thought that they could find a way past Dallas with this different version of the team and a lesser version of the team. But that's disrespectful to a team like Dallas, and Dallas made them pay, and you sent everybody home saying this was not worthy of our best quality,” Lalas continued.

“And what does that say to somebody who is going to hope is going to continue to buy season tickets? Oh, and by the way, continue to buy season tickets when Messi is no longer there in the future.”

  • WHAT ALEXI LALAS SAID

The former USMNT defender also opened up on Vancouver Whitecaps star Sebastian Berhalter and his form this season, asserting that he could do a job for the USMNT. Lalas did add that while Berhalter won’t be a flashy star or a game-changer, he’ll offer something consistent that Pochettino needs.

“Yeah,” Lalas said when asked if Sebastian Berhalter deserves a call up. “So it's relative to where we are right now. And I think you would agree with me that there is consternation out there and there is concern. And as we said, we've used the word apathy out there when it comes to this national team. What that means is there is opportunity. There's opportunity for change.

He added, "But when we start to see, you know, the Brian Whites and in this case this question was about Sebastian Berhalter. Sebastian Berhalter, speaking of players that have improved from year to year, this is a guy who has done so, and is he flashy? No. Is he even a game changer when it comes to potentially here with the national team? No. But I think he's worth a flyer on for Mauricio Pochettino coming into this summer for the Gold Cup with the understanding that ultimately you're going to be judged next summer in the actual World Cup."

“But there is a question as to do you have the right collection of players? It's not the best players, it's the best collection of players, and who knows, maybe someone like Sebastian comes in and is just simple and is predictable in the most positive sense and provides Pochettino with something that's not sexy but gets the results that you need. And I think that from a Pochettino perspective, if there is to be success next summer, it's not going to be in a romantic version. It's not going to be sexy.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The controversy highlights the unique challenges MLS faces as it accommodates aging global superstars while maintaining competitive balance. Inter Miami's handling of its star-studded roster, which includes Messi, Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba, has become a focal point for discussions about competitive integrity, fan expectations, and the league's evolving approach to marquee players amid a congested schedule.

Middlesbrough want to beat rivals to sign another forward after Whittaker

Middlesbrough and Michael Carrick now have their eyes on beating Burnley and West Brom to another player in the January transfer window after the Morgan Whittaker saga.

Middlesbrough’s January signings so far

Those at The Riverside have been extremely busy in the winter window, bolstering Carrick’s squad for the second half of the season. Goalkeeper Mark Travers has joined on loan from Bournemouth, whereas left-back Ryan Giles made a temporary move from Hull City. A permanent deal was also struck for loanee George Edmundson from Ipswich Town, but the marquee arrival has been Whittaker.

The 24-year-old, who was also wanted by Burnley, chose Boro and signed a four-and-a-half-year contract on Teeside. Speaking after joining Boro, Whittaker said: “I’m really excited and just can’t wait to get going. I’m relieved it’s all done. I’m very sure about what I want for my next step.

“Middlesbrough is the perfect opportunity, with the manager, players and style of football. Being back with Finn was a big appeal as well because he set up most of my goals last season, so I’m hoping he can do that again for us to finish the season strong!”

Asked what Boro fans can expect to see from Whittaker, the forward added: “I do like the right-hand side but also playing as a 10. With the midfielders we have, I can find pockets of space and engage more in the game. Promotion is the big aim, but individually, I want to return to my form from last season: more shots, being creative, and increasing my goals and assists.”

However, after Whittaker, another forward addition appears to be on the Riverside radar.

Middlesbrough interested in signing Tottenham forward

According to Football London, Middlesbrough are one of the clubs interested in signing Tottenham forward Will Lankshear on loan for the remainder of the season.

However, alongside Boro, Championship rivals Burnley, Cardiff, Luton and West Brom are also keen on the 19-year-old, who is set to leave north London on a temporary basis.

Lankshear, hailed as “phenomenal” after coming through the Spurs academy, is yet to head out on loan during his career but a move to the second tier appears to be on the cards.

He scored his first senior goal in the Europa League earlier this season and has been hailed by Ange Postecoglou, who said last summer: “Will was good. We kind of brought him in this last week. He’s looked bright in training. He worked hard. He’s had a very good year last year and it’s about rewarding him for that. It’s about coming in and making an impact. He did well and he took his goal well.”

However, with Monday’s deadline fast approaching, Boro may need to act fast if they are to pip their rivals to a deal for Lankshear, making this one to watch.

The PCB and the UK high commissioner to Pakistan met with Imran Khan, the country’s former prime minister, in Lahore on Tuesday in a meeting that is believed to have given the Pakistan board assurances that a planned political rally will not disrupt the Rawalpindi Test between Pakistan and England. The venue of the series opener, due to get underway at Pindi Stadium on December 1, has been the subject of uncertainty ever since Imran’s political party, the Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), made clear its intentions to organise a long protest march with its supporters onto Islamabad. The march is due to go through Rawalpindi, approximately 20km from Islamabad, later this week, having been postponed earlier this month following the attempted assassination of Imran in Wazirabad on November 3.Over the weekend, Imran announced he would join the march in Rawalpindi on Saturday, November 26, from where they will eventually move to the capital. England are scheduled to fly out from Abu Dhabi to Islamabad the same evening. The PCB do have a back-up itinerary in place, which would see the first Test taking place in Karachi. However, they did reaffirm their intentions to go ahead with Rawalpindi over the weekend.Ramiz Raja, the PCB chairman, and Christian Turner, the high commissioner, met Imran at his Lahore residence in Zaman Park, where the former PM is recovering from right leg injuries sustained in the assassination attempt.Although he is no longer in power, Imran remains one of the most influential figures on Pakistan’s current political scene – the meeting itself is an indication of that influence. He has been calling for fresh general elections ever since his ouster in April this year and has galvanised his support base behind him in a series of protest rallies. This long march is expected to attract large crowds and though security around Imran will be beefed up, he told the last week that he expects another assassination attempt on his life.As a former Pakistan captain – the country’s most successful – Imran was the PCB’s board patron until his removal from office, and he will be keenly aware of the timing of his rally and its potential implications on England’s series, their first Test tour of the country since 2005.It is believed that Imran assured Ramiz and Turner that the Rawalpindi Test, due to get underway in just over a week’s time, will not be affected by the long march. Fawad Chaudhry, a PTI leader and former information minister, tweeted a video of the meeting and said bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest were discussed. After Rawalpindi, the series moves to Multan (December 9-13) and then Karachi (December 17-21) for the final Test.
