Huge European club preparing £50m offer to sign "special" Aston Villa star

A big European club are believed to be preparing their first offer for a “special” Aston Villa player, according to a worrying transfer rumour.

Latest Aston Villa news

Unai Emery’s side suffered a disappointing day at the office on Boxing Day, losing 3-0 away to Newcastle United in the Premier League. In fairness, though, Jhon Duran’s extremely harsh red card gave the visitors a huge uphill battle, however, so the result was more understandable for that reason.

While this season has been a positive one for Villa overall, it is still clear that further improvements are needed within the squad, with the January transfer window giving them the chance to bring in new faces. AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori has been linked with a move to the club, with the Englishman potentially eyeing a return to his homeland.

Atalanta ace Charles De Ketelaere is another player who has emerged as a rumoured target for the Villans, as the Midlands side look to bring in additional firepower in the final third. The Belgian has three goals and four assists in just four Champions League starts this season, not to mention five apiece in Serie A.

That said, there is also the risk of Villa losing certain players, not least the highly-rated Duran, with Italian giants Napoli thought to be eyeing up a move for him. Now, a fresh update has emerged on the 21-year-old’s future.

Club preparing bid for "special" Aston Vila hero

According to a report from Spain, Paris Saint-Germain are preparing a first offer of £50m for Aston Villa striker Duran, as they look to prise him away from the Premier League club.

Manager Luis Enrique is keen on getting a deal over the line in 2025, bolstering his attacking options in the process.

Jhon Duran

Losing Duran at this point in his career would be a mighty setback for Villa, considering the youngster is one of the most exciting young attacking players in the country currently.

The £30,000-a-week Villa star has scored seven goals in the Premier League this season, despite only starting four matches, and Emery hailed him earlier this year, saying:

“Jhon Duran is a special player. We have to try and help him. He is a good guy, and he needs a team behind him. He is getting our demands better. He was very clinical and today was important for him.”

Villa must do all they can to retain the services of Duran, with the club needing to get into a position where they are every bit as exciting a proposition as a club like PSG.

Aston Villa agree £6m+ deal to sign "quick" gem who will arrive next week

He’s set to be the club’s first signing of the winter window.

Granted, they may not be able to offer the vast wages of the Ligue 1 giants, but they are now a Champions League-playing club with top players all over the pitch. Here’s hoping Duran sees his future at Villa Park, but it isn’t impossible to see his head being turned.

Man City can land Savinho upgrade in swoop for "unbelievable" £66m star

Manchester City dropped points once again in the Premier League after they failed to secure three points against Everton at The Etihad on Boxing Day.

The Cityzens have now won just one game in their last 13 matches in all competitions, and find themselves 14 points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in-hand, in the top-flight.

Pep Guardiola’s side are seventh in the league, behind Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest, and now face a fight to secure a place in the Champions League for the 2025/26 campaign.

As you can see in the highlights above, City did manage to take the lead through Bernardo Silva in the first-half against the Toffees, only to go in level at the break.

Erling Haaland then had the perfect chance to secure a win for the Cityzens in the second-half after Savinho was brought down by Vitaly Mykolenko in the box, but the Norway international saw his relatively tame effort parried away by Jordan Pickford.

Despite winning the penalty that could have resulted in the game-winner for City, it has not been a great start to life in England for Savinho, who arrived in the summer transfer window.

Savinho's form this season

The Premier League champions swooped to sign the Brazil international from Troyes in the summer for a reported fee of £30.8m, after he spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Girona in LaLiga.

Savinho produced nine goals and ten assists in the Spanish top-flight last season and Man City may have felt that he would provide a similar level of production, as both a scorer and a creator of goals, in England this term.

Unfortunately, however, that has not been the case, as the 20-year-old starlet has found the transition to playing in the Premier League a difficult one to make.

The left-footed whiz has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Guardiola in the 2024/25 campaign to date and is yet to find the back of the net for his first goal for City.

Savinho has failed to offer consistent quality at the top end of the pitch for the Cityzens, unlike his time with Girona in LaLiga, and that has played a part in the team’s struggles, as the wide players have failed to contribute much to the attack.

As you can see in the table above, the Brazilian forward, who typically plays on the right side of the frontline, has failed to score from 2.3 xG, which shows that his teammates have created chances for him to score.

Two goal contributions in 15 appearances in the Premier League is, to put it simply, not good enough for a forward in a team that set out to win the title at the start of the season.

Whilst there is still plenty of time for him to improve, at the age of 20, City need to improve their poor form and they could do that by swooping to sign a huge upgrade on Savinho in the upcoming January transfer window.

Manchester City's interest in Premier League forward

A recent report claimed that Manchester City are eyeing up a swoop to sign West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It was reported that the Cityzens are preparing to make an offer of around £66m in an attempt to convince the Hammers to part ways with the Ghana international, who has been an important player for Julen Lopetegui this term.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not their Premier League rivals are prepared to cash in on the forward in January, or if a fee of £66m would be enough to secure his services.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

It will not be an easy deal to get over the line next month because there are other teams in the top-flight who are also reportedly looking to challenge for his signature.

Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Arsenal are all reportedly in the market to make a potential swoop for the West Ham sensation in January, which means that City could have plenty of competition to beat to land him.

Guardiola should, though, push the board to win the race for the left-footed star in January because he could come in as a huge upgrade on Savinho on the right flank, with both playing being left-footed forwards who predominantly play on the right.

Why Kudus would be a huge upgrade on Savinho

The 24-year-old dynamo is a proven Premier League performer who has the quality to make a difference in the final third with his quality on the ball.

Kudus joined the Hammers from Ajax, where he had produced 27 goals and 12 assists in 87 matches in all competitions, in the summer of 2023 and took little time to adapt to English football.

The Ghana international ended the 2023/24 campaign with a return of 14 goals and six assists in all competitions for the Hammers, which shows that he offered a threat as a scorer and a creator of goals throughout the campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Kudus was not provided with many high-quality opportunities to find the back of the net, with 5.18 xG, but still managed to score eight goals.

He also offers a fantastic threat in transition for his team, with 3.8 completed dribbles per match, as the winger has the quality to consistently beat the opposition full-back with his dribbling ability.

So far this season, Kudus has scored three goals and provided one assist in 13 outings, with all of those goal contributions coming in his last seven matches, after a slow start to the campaign.

This shows that he has offered a far greater goal threat in the Premier League than Savinho this season, and it is not a flash in the pan as he had already proven his quality at that level last term.

The West Ham star, who was described as “unbelievable” by teammate Michail Antonio, is a proven Premier League performer who could step straight into the Man City side to be a huge upgrade on the Brazilian, by offering far more in the final third.

Leeds eyeing move to sign "clinical" forward who scored 23 goals for Marsch

Leeds United and the 49ers are now interested in signing a “clinical” striker for Daniel Farke this month, according to a new report.

Leeds United transfer news

After the 3-3 Championship draw against Hull City over the weekend, Farke revealed that he doesn’t “expect much” in terms of incomings this month, as he isn’t a “big fan” of this transfer window. However, given the Whites are desperate to get back into the Premier League, if opportunities present themselves, they could be in the market for one or two fresh additions.

Club now make contact to sign Leeds star who Farke's called a "leader"

A return to his former club beckons…

ByBarney Lane Jan 6, 2025

The Sun have reported that Leeds have opened talks to sign defender Andrew Omobamidele this month. The Ireland international plays for Nottingham Forest but has found himself out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo, and a move could happen this month. Forest are open to letting the defender leave with a loan and an obligation to buy a real possibility. But Leeds do face fierce competition, as rivals Sheffield United are also interested in signing Omobamidele.

While Omobamidele may arrive at Elland Road, current Leeds defender Junior Firpo could be about to seal an exit. It has been reported that the defender’s team are laying the groundwork for a return to his former side, Real Betis. It is claimed that talks between intermediaries have already taken place between Betis and Firpo’s camp.

Leeds interested in signing "clinical" forward

Omobamidele may not be the only arrival for the Yorkshire side, as according to The Daily Mail’s sports print edition, relayed by Football League World, Leeds are interested in signing Mergim Berisha from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

The 26-year-old, who has been described as being a “clinical finisher” by analysts Football Chatters, has been at Hoffenheim since August 2023. The forward impressed for Red Bull Salzburg in the 2020/21 campaign, scoring 14 goals in 28 Bundesliga games, and that form then saw him move to Fenerbahce. He was unable to replicate the same form in Turkey, so he moved to Germany, where he played for FC Augsburg before Hoffenheim.

Patrick Bamford could soon be on his way out of Leeds, so the Whites have their eye on potential replacements, and this report states that Leeds have “shown an interest” in Mergim, who scored 23 goals under former Whites boss Jesse Marsch, despite his lack of goals while playing for Hoffenheim.

Despite his current form, that hasn’t put Farke off from looking at the striker, who he may be aware of as he’s managed in the Bundesliga during his managerial career. Mergim’s ability to play as a centre forward, as well as a winger, may also be a reason why he is of interest to the Leeds boss. This is not the first time that the Whites have been linked with a move for the player, as back in 2022, they were in talks to sign Mergim while he was playing for Fenerbahce, and at that time, the Turkish side wanted €5 million.

Pandya's all-round show and Pant's maiden ton seal series win for India

The pair added 133 for the fifth wicket after Reece Topley had ripped through the top order

Valkerie Baynes17-Jul-20224:19

Giles: This was a coming-of-age-knock from Rishabh Pant

When you’re hot, you’re hot, just ask Reece Topley, correction: Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant. After Hardik’s four-wicket haul had helped bowl England out inside 46 overs, Topley extended his blistering form, which delivered six wickets in England’s series-levelling win at Lord’s, by reducing India to 38 for 3 in pursuit of 260 at Old Trafford. Then Hardik simply flicked the switch from “bowl brilliantly” to “bat beautifully” for a crucial fifty as he and Rishabh Pant – with his maiden century in ODIs – guided India to victory by five wickets and a 2-1 series triumph.Pant remained not out on 125 after a 133-run stand wicket with Hardik, for whom this series marked a return to ODIs for the first time in nearly a year after battling a back injury. Hardik’s career-best 4 for 24 from seven overs and innings of 71 made him the first India player to score a half-century and take four wickets in an ODI since Yuvraj Singh at the 2011 World Cup.The pair came together with their side 72 for 4 after Topley had ripped through the top order. He struck with his seventh delivery, a full one outside off stump that lured Shikhar Dhawan into an attempted drive only to skew it to Jason Roy, who took a good, low catch at point. Rohit Sharma then fell in Topley’s next over, prodding at one that angled away from an off-stump line and edging to Joe Root at slip.Virat Kohli hinted that he might be about to break the shackles that have had his batting under scrutiny by taking David Willey for three fours before Topley struck again, angling a length ball across him to entice a faint edge, which went through to the keeper. Kohli was gone for 17 and India were 38 for 3.They had added just five more runs by the end of the ten-over powerplay, substantially behind England’s 66 for 3. After 20 overs, however, India had restored parity via Pant and Hardik, who were united when Craig Overton had Suryakumar Yadav caught behind for 16.Pant survived a missed stumping chance on 18 when Jos Buttler seemed as deceived by Moeen Ali’s turn as Pant had been as he advanced and missed by a long way only for Buttler to fumble.India had slipped slightly behind the curve again when Topley returned in the 25th over but by that stage, Pant and Hardik were set. Topley had sent down just two overs, which went for 20, before England changed things up again in search of a breakthrough.Reece Topley is over the moon after nicking off Virat Kohli to leave India 38 for 3•Getty Images

Hardik reached fifty first, pressing Liam Livingstone’s legbreak to long-off for a single. Pant followed him to the milestone soon after, crashing Ben Stokes to the long-off boundary, and from there, the duo played with freedom, piercing the field regularly as the hosts struggled for answers. They found one when Brydon Carse finally removed Hardik, who had just carted him for back-to-back fours but tried to swing another over the leg side and picked out a diving Stokes at short midwicket.Pant remained in control, though, moving into the 90s with a hefty heave off David Willey into the stand beyond cow corner and when he brought up his maiden ODI ton pulling a single to deep square leg, India needed just 24 with 55 balls remaining.Pant wasted no time in taking his side home, launching an incredible onslaught of five consecutive fours off Willey followed by a single, which left them needing another three when he reverse-swept Root for four off the first ball of the next over.Earlier, Rohit, the India captain, raised some eyebrows among pundits when he opted to bowl first on a good batting track after his side had failed to chase down a target of 247 and lost the second ODI by 100 runs. But the move looked inspired, as did the selection of Mohammed Siraj to replace Jasprit Bumrah who was suffering from back spasms, when he opened with a double-wicket maiden to leave England reeling at 12 for 2 inside the first two overs. Those runs were all down to Roy, who struck Mohammed Shami for three fours in the first four balls of the match, crashing his first delivery through mid-off before clearing square leg and clipping another off his toes through midwicket.Siraj struck with his third ball to remove Jonny Bairstow and with his sixth to get Root, both for ducks.Hardik Pandya took two wickets in his first three overs•Getty Images

Hardik replaced Siraj in the tenth over with immediate impact when he had an indecisive Roy out for 41, skying the ball straight up for Pant to pouch it behind the stumps, and when Hardik cramped Stokes, who advanced to a short ball and top-edged for a return catch, he had 2 for 2 inside three overs.Buttler and Moeen had to hunker down, putting on just ten runs from the next 28 balls before Siraj returned to the attack, twice striking Buttler heavy blows to the side of the helmet as he attempted to pull the short ball.Siraj attempted to bounce Buttler again in the next over but didn’t quite get the same lift, and Buttler was ready, swatting it powerfully to the boundary in front of square leg. Moeen passed 2000 ODI runs after two fours and then a six, swung over backward square, all off Siraj.Ravindra Jadeja broke their 75-run partnership with just his second ball when he had Moeen caught behind attempting to sweep one which spun and bounced onto the bat face for Pant to gather down the leg side.Showing no ill-effects from those helmet blows, Buttler brought up his fifty with a single through deep extra cover off Jadeja.Hardik and Jadeja then combined twice in an over to reduce England to 199 for 7. Hardik’s short ball tempted Livingstone – who already had braces of fours and sixes in his 27 – into a hook towards backward square leg, where Jadeja swallowed the catch just inside the boundary rope.Three balls later, Buttler fell trying to dispatch another short ball to deep midwicket, only for Jadeja to come racing around from deep square and sliding to meet the ball, then rightly lapping up the applause for his excellent effort.Buttler ended up as his side’s leading run-scorer with 60 as Yuzvendra Chahal tidied up the tail, the hosts losing their last three wickets for 12 runs in 14 balls.

ماريسكا: ليفربول أجبرنا على اللجوء للدفاع.. وأتمنى أن ننافس على التأهل لدوري أبطال أوروبا

Taylor Cornall falls just short of maiden century in Worcestershire win

Taylor Cornall came within three runs of his maiden List A century to lead Worcestershire Rapids to a second win in 48 hours as they overcame Essex Eagles by seven wickets in a Royal London Cup encounter at New Road.Cornall, a left-handed batter in his first season with Worcestershire, followed his 61 in the victory over Northamptonshire with another excellent contribution as the Rapids chased down a 280 target with eight balls to spare. He shared in a decisive second wicket stand of 158 in 28 overs with Gareth Roderick who hit his maiden List A half century for Worcestershire.Cornall was eventually lbw to Luc Benkenstein on 97 but Jake Libby and Ed Barnard saw the Rapids, who had lost their opening five games, over the finishing line during an unbroken stand of 57.Seventeen-year-old Robin Das, and Benkenstein, aged 20, had also achieved their highest scores in competition with 63 and 55 respectively.Worcestershire captain, Jake Libby, opted to bat and Ben Gibbon made the first breakthrough when Josh Rymell drove at the left armer and edged to Ed Pollock at first slip.Essex captain Tom Westley went into the game as his leading run-scorer in the competition with 335 but he went lbw first ball against Dillon Pennington in the next over.Related

Grant Roelofsen and Feroze Khushi, Essex’s other in-form batters, scored freely in adding 55 in nine overs. But Tongue came into the attack and was rewarded when Roelofsen on 31 went across his stumps and was caught down keeper Ben Cox down the legside. There was more joy for Tongue when Khushi (43) went to pull a delivery that came onto him quicker than expected and Cox running back held onto another legside chance.Worcestershire were firmly in the ascendancy when Nick Browne was run out by Barnard’s direct hit at the non-striker’s after he had turned Pennington to point and set off for a single.Essex were then 132 for 5 and Benkenstein on three had a let off when he inside edged Tongue on his return to the attack and Cox was unable to hold onto the chance. It was a rare error by Cox whose two catches today lifted his dismissals in all cricket to the 600 mark.Tongue’s permitted quota of eight over for his comeback match resulted in encouraging figures of 8-0-41-2.Benkenstein also survived a sharp chance to Barnard at midwicket off Libby and he and Das brought about an Essex recovery during a stand of 83 in 13 overs. It took a good catch by Pollock running around to deep midwicket to break the stand after Das aimed a big blow at Barnard. His List A best 63 off 64 balls contained nine boundaries.Gibbon struck for the second time as Aron Nijjar picked out Tongue at mid on and then Pennington took a good at midwicket to dismiss Benkenstein off his own bowling after he attempted a hook. His 55 was also his best score in List A cricket and came from 59 deliveries with seven boundaries. It became two wickets in two balls for Pennington as Jamal Richards was bowled after playing an expansive drive before some late blows by Shane Snater lifted the final total to 279 for 9.Pollock, recalled in place of the injured Azhar Ali, got the Rapids innings off to a flying start and hit Snater over midwicket for six. He made 34 from 25 balls out of 50 before he pushed forward to Jamal Richards and was bowled.Cornall was joined by Gareth Roderick and the pair batted with great authority and kept the score moving along at the required rate throughout. Cornall raced to a 59 ball half century with Roderick needed only six more deliveries to reach his maiden List A fifty. Seamers and spinners alike were not allowed to settle although Cornall had a life on 67 when he was dropped at midwicket off Toole.Roderick was full of improvisation, twice reverse sweeping Westley for boundaries, but the same stroke eventually brought about his downfall on 76 from 85 balls. He picked out Jamal Richards at point off Benkenstein to end a partnership of 158 in 28 overs with Cornall. All eyes were now on Cornall to see if he could reach three figures but he fell agonisingly short when lbw to Benkenstein and left the field to a standing ovation.

More than 'Burrito Boys' – Founded in a Mexican restaurant, semi-pro side El Farolito pay homage to the past in U.S. Open Cup run

El Farolito, a family run restaurant and family run team, are looking to shake up the U.S. Open Cup once again

The most likable team in American soccer doesn't even have a pitch to play on. It doesn't have a regular practice time. It can't afford to host the biggest game in its history.

Well, in reality, it really isn't a soccer . It's more than that.

This is the tale of El Farolito, an amateur soccer side from San Francisco's mission district, affiliated with – and proud representative of – a very successful local Mexican restaurant. The club's monikers – "Tacqueria Team" and "Burrito Boys" – write themselves. But what from the outside seems like either a quick laugh or something designed for the deepest corners of soccer social media is, in actuality, something far more

El Farolito is a family run restaurant. It is also a family run team. They are a power of the West Coast amateur scene. And yes, every game ends with a trip to the restaurant and a good meal.

And as the semi-pro side takes on a professional opponent for the second straight year in U.S. Open Cup, they're fighting for something more. Yes, it's fun. Yes, it's rag-tag. But El Farolito deeply care about their connection to the local community, standing as evidence of the staying power of grassroots soccer. And they're not bad at this sport either.

"We hear a lot of like these nicknames – the Burrito Boys or the Taqueria Team and all that stuff," head coach Santiago Lopez told GOAL. "And the whole team knows about it, but we're just focused. It doesn't matter."

U.S. Soccer'No attention'

For years, El Farolito were something of a local secret. They were the Mexican joint that attracted some good footballers, a burrito place that played soccer on the side. Relative anonymity – at least on a national scale – suited them. But recent successes thrust them into the spotlight.

The U.S. Open Cup is the closest thing the United States has to an amateur-pro tournament. It's not dissimilar to the FA Cup in England, or Copa del Rey in Spain. As you might expect, most sides that enter from the semi-professtional ranks are fairly easily brushed aside by a pro franchises.

But El Farolito, for two straight years, have sprung an upset. Currently members of the NPSL – essentially the fourth tier of American soccer – they have had a knack for beating those higher up in the pyramid. The first big win came in the first round in 2024, when they beat Portland Timbers 2. They went one better a few weeks later, downing Central Valley Fuego FC.

The dream ended with a loss to the nearby Oakland Roots in the third round – even though they outshot the USL Championship side on the night.

"The day after we got eliminated in the third round with Oakland, we're back to normal, and there's no attention," Lopez said.

So much for that. This year, they are back. And once again, the upsets are underway. Real Monarchs were comfortably dispatched in the first round. El Farolito came from behind to beat Monterey Bay in the second round two weeks ago. The buzz has returned.

AdvertisementGetty'We have nothing but appreciation'

But El Farolito aren't a plucky upstart with no history to speak of. Rather, this is a club engrained in the San Francisco community. Founded in 1985, "Faro" was originally comprised of former pros from overseas and employees of the restaurant chain – which now has 12 locations in the Bay Area. Salvador "Don Chava" Lopez – who passed in 2021 – started the whole thing, drawing on a love for soccer from his native Mexico.

Success came quickly. They started in the lower ends of the wonderfully-named San Francisco Soccer Football League (SFSFL), before being promoted to the top division. By the early '90s, they were regular local division champions, and had reached the final of the National Amateur Cup.

El Farolito were rebranded as Club Deportivo Mexico in 1993. Even more success followed. They won the U.S. Open Cup that year, beating teams from San Jose, Milwaukee and Philadelphia on their run. That tournament victory earned them a spot in the 1994 CONCACAF Cup Winners Cup. This club founded in a burrito restaurant in Northern California was suddenly playing against top-tier Mexican sides.

Lopez remembers the 1993 final, and was there in the stands at just eight-years-old as his Dad coached his side to a 5-0 win. Ever since then, he has felt a sense of responsibility to the brand.

"We're very privileged that he learned the bad way and the right ways in this country," Lopez said. "We have nothing but appreciation. And we're very fortunate for that, and we want to preserve that and take care of all the decades of work that my parents did."

After that, the club faded into relative irrelevance – at least on the national scale. They were still successful in the SFSFL – 11 division titles from 1995-2017 is nothing to sniff at – but Don Chava's health was declining. His children steadily took over the restaurant, while Santiago became full-time manager of El Farolito.

"We noticed that he needed some help in the business," Lopez said. "My sisters came in and we take some responsibilities away from him so he could be more focused on making some more difficult decisions. But for us, it was just the more routine stuff, like payroll management, scheduling, bills, accounting, all of that."

Getty Images'It's Open Cup, Open Cup, Open Cup'

But then, in 2017, things changed. The NPSL, founded in 2003, had always handed out automatic qualification to the U.S. Open Cup. In an homage to the club's history, Lopez insisted that El Farolito move divisions – and start thinking bigger.

"That's why we decided to go into the NPSL, because we wanted to go to a national stage. And because it has a direct qualification to the Open Cup, if you do well, that was the main intention. It's Open Cup, Open Cup, Open Cup," he explained.

That came with its own challenges, though. El Farolito had to get bigger, better, and more talented. Lopez, who was already helping out with some of the business duties at the restaurant, had to increase his scouting and coaching workload. The problem? El Farolito were – and still are – semi-pro. There is no real budget for these things.

Pedigree helps, of course. El Farolito are well known in the area. Talent has never really been a problem, with ex-pros from as far as Columbia, Honduras and Ivory Coast – as well as some talented local youngsters – all in the mix. But the pipeline is always moving.

"I'm the one who's focused with the with the soccer decisions. I go and I look for certain tournaments or certain players," Lopez said.

It gets difficult, keeping track of everything, Lopez admitted.

"I have a business to run. I have a family. I have my things to do. I want to prepare myself with coaching courses or do scrimmages and practice with the team or the group once or twice a week," he said.

Throw in the fact that Lopez and his wife have just welcomed a child, now less than a month old, and this whole thing gets even more complicated.

Getty Images'We just have to adapt'

One obvious issue: El Farolito don't always have a place to play. There are a limited number of fields in the area, Lopez said. And there's something of an arms race for permits to rent them. El Farolito regularly competes with flag football and frisbee teams for fields on which to practice. Often, there will be scrambles on a midweek night as to where, exactly, training will be the next day.

And sometimes, fields aren't available, regardless. It's not an uncommon occurrence for Lopez and Co. to show up to their scheduled field and find another group running into their allocated time slots. Warmups sometimes have to be conducted in tiny slices of turf behind a standard pitch. Daylight is also an issue; once the lights go off on a public-use pitch, then practice ends.

Lopez has a remarkable level of efficiency to it all, though. Everyone is always on time. Drills are flexible and adaptable. El Farolito has a separate goalkeeper coach and five registered goalkeepers – they always get their own area. On some nights, the team will have to accept that it won't be able to train on a full field. But that has never been a problem.

"We can't complain, because we we live in a city that that has a lot of freedom, and historically, has always been like that," he said. "So we just have to adapt to it. And I'm very fortunate the players, regardless if it's playing on a small field or on a large they're there to work and have a good time."

Alongside Bergvall: Spurs’ "unbelievable" 9/10 gem is now undroppable

Last night’s game against Liverpool in the League Cup was an enormous one for Tottenham Hotspur, and the players did themselves proud.

Ange Postecoglou’s side might be falling apart in the Premier League, but after yesterday’s superb performance, they are now just 90 minutes away from a final and have a one-goal lead to take to Anfield.

There were brilliant displays across the pitch for the Lilywhites, from the newly signed Antonín Kinsky in goal to the ever-impressive Dejan Kulusevski in midfield and the constantly dangerous Dominic Solanke up top.

However, two starters really stood out for us, and one of them was none other than Lucas Bergvall.

Bergvall's game vs Liverpool

So, one of the two best players for Spurs last night was the 18-year-old prodigy Bergvall, who started in midfield and looked cool, calm and collected from the first minute to the last.

On top of covering what felt like every blade of grass for Postecoglou, the former Djurgården ace was also a creative spark in the middle of the park and, most importantly, made the perfect run into Liverpool’s penalty area to put away the winner in the 85th minute.

Unsurprisingly, the watching press were full of praise for the talented midfielder with football.london’s Alasdair Gold awarding him a 9/10 at full-time, writing that he was ‘busy’ throughout and that he’s ‘adapting so quickly’ to first-team football.

Such a glowing appraisal of the young Swede is more than backed up by his statistics from the game.

For example, in 98 minutes of football, he scored a goal, created two big chances, played three key passes, took two shots on target, took 44 touches, won one foul, made two interceptions and completed three tackles.

In short, it was a simply sensational performance and one that has to keep him in the starting lineup for every important game going forward, which is exactly what can be said about Djed Spence as well.

Spence's game vs Liverpool

Yes, the other starter who really caught our eye was Spence.

The talented full-back made just his sixth start of the campaign, and as has been the case in most other appearances he’s made this season, his performance was so good that it simply raises more questions about why he hasn’t started more games.

The “unbelievable” ace, as dubbed by the iconic Ian Wright, was absolutely rock-solid at the back, so much so that we forgot Mohamed Salah was even playing, as well as a useful outlet in attacking moves.

Like his Swedish teammate, the 24-year-old star seriously impressed Gold, who awarded him another 9/10 match rating and wrote that it was an ‘excellent display’ from the former Middlesbrough gem and that ‘he really is challenging now to keep his spot for the longer term.’

That might all sound like hyperbole, but it really isn’t, and his statistics from the game prove as much.

For example, in his 98 minutes on the pitch, the 6 foot titan took 78 touches, made 36 passes, won eight of 12 duels, made one interception, two tackles and six clearances and completed two dribbles.

Ultimately, it might only be half-time in the tie, but Spurs were superb last night, and while there were brilliant performances across the pitch, Bergvall and Spence stood out and simply have to start every important game from here on out.

The exciting winger would add some much-needed dynamism to Spurs’ attack.
