Managerial candidate travels to meet Tan as Cardiff plan to end 54-day wait

54 days on from sacking Erol Bulut, Cardiff City could finally be planning to appoint their next permanent manager after one candidate reportedly travelled to meet with owner Vincent Tan.

The Bluebirds parted ways with Bulut over a month ago and remain without a permanent option in charge. Having initially shown their former manager the door after he left them in an early relegation sack, the Welsh club can’t exactly say that things have gotten a lot better in his absence, given that they still sit inside the Championship’s bottom three on goal difference.

In charge whilst that search for a permanent candidate goes on has been Omer Riza, who has coincidently emerged as a strong option to take the job on a full-time basis, despite the fact that Cardiff remain in a perilous position.

In fact, according to Glen Williams of Wales Online, Riza has travelled to meet Vincent Tan in Malaysia as Cardiff look to end their search for a permanent manager. The interim boss reportedly has a lot of credit and could now end the Bluebirds’ 54-day wait by officially replacing Bulut.

A young, unproven manager and, therefore, the type of candidate that Tan reportedly wants to give an opportunity with his next appointment, there won’t be many who know the club better than Riza.

Omer Riza for Cardiff City.

Whilst their next appointment is crucial, Tan must make his decision sooner rather than later. He can’t let this saga go on for much longer as a make-or-break festive period approaches. If it is to be Riza, meanwhile, then he will have quite the task on his hands.

Riza's Cardiff record so far

In charge since Bulut was sacked on September 22, Riza has enjoyed moments to forget and, to his credit, victories to savour in a mixed nine game period in the Championship. As things stand, of course, Cardiff remain inside the relegation zone but only on goal difference. Things can quickly change in the Championship and Riza has proved his ability to get results out of this current side.

The numbers are certainly on Riza’s side, even if the league table doesn’t reflect those numbers as of yet. With more wins than losses and just eight goals conceded in nine games – four of which came in the interim manager’s first game in charge against Hull City – Riza has earned the chance to take the role on a permanent basis.

On form, the Bluebirds are on course to battle all the way for survival and perhaps secure their place in England’s second tier for another campaign. Amid such inexperience, it’s Riza who deserves the credit for such a promising run in the last 54 days.

The 11 best-ever starts to a Premier League season – list

Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Southampton at the weekend further extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to a whopping eight points after just 12 games played.

The Reds have already amassed an impressive 31 points – a total that has only been reached 10 times in Premier League history. Eight of those clubs went on to win the title.

Here, we recall the 11 best starts to a Premier League season, including Liverpool’s impressive start to life under Arne Slot. In the case of a tiebreaker, we’ve separated teams first by the lead they had at the time, and then by the amount of goals scored.

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City appeared to have made a mistake by letting Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko move to Arsenal in the summer of 2022.

With the pair in their team, the Gunners started the 2022/23 Premier League season with ten wins, one draw and one loss from their first 12 games – form that saw them amass 31 points and a two-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table.

Ultimately, however, City won the title on the penultimate weekend, somewhat vindicating their decision to let Jesus and Zinchenko move to north London.

Bukayo Saka's top 11 Premier League goals for Arsenal

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is a serious goal threat – here are his best strikes for the Gunners.

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 2, 2024 10 Manchester United 31 points, 2006/07

A 5-1 victory over Fulham on the opening day of the 2006/07 season saw Manchester United instantly claim the Premier League’s top spot.

9 more wins from their next 11 games saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, minus a brief two-week slip in September, maintain that position, and by mid-November, they were three points clear of Chelsea at the head of the table.

9 Newcastle United 31 points, 1995/96

In 1995/96, Newcastle United, led by manager Kevin Keegan and bolstered by new recruits Les Ferdinand and David Ginola, won nine of their first dozen matches, recording wins over Liverpool, Everton and Chelsea to go five points clear at the top.

Ferdinand scored 14 goals in those 12 games – a record that stood until Man City’s Erling Haaland scored 17 in the same timeframe in 2022/23.

The Magpies stayed top until February, but a run of five defeats in eight eventually saw them concede the title to Manchester United.

8 Chelsea 31 points, 2005/06

In what was Jose Mourinho’s second season in charge during his first spell at Chelsea, the Blues got off to a flyer in the Premier League, winning ten, drawing one, and losing one of their first dozen games.

By matchday 12, Mourinho’s side, who had kept six clean sheets in their first six games, were six points clear of second-placed Wigan Athletic (yes, really) at the top of the table.

7 Liverpool 31 points, 2024/25

Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool

Following the departure of long-standing manager Jurgen Klopp in the summer, it was expected that Liverpool would take time to get used to life under successor Arne Slot.

Instead, the Reds have already soared into an eight-point lead in the Premier League after 12 games, having recorded wins over Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Their only defeat has come at the hands of Nottingham Forest, who beat them 1-0 back in September 2024.

6 Manchester United 31 points, 1993/94

No team in Premier League history has had a bigger lead at the top of the table after 12 games than Manchester United in 1993/94.

By late October, the Red Devils were already nine points ahead of second-placed Norwich City, who they had beaten 2-0 on the opening day thanks to goals from Ryan Giggs and Bryan Robson.

Unsurprisingly, United went on to win the title by an eight-point margin.

5 Manchester City 32 points, 2018/19

In 2018/19, City won 10 and drew 2 of their opening 12 Premier League games to amass a two-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the table.

Pep Guardiola’s side scored 36 goals in those dozen matches, beating Huddersfield Town and Southampton 6-1, as well as Burnley by five goals. They also enjoyed a 3-1 Manchester derby win over United thanks to goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan.

The 9 best derby matches in UK football – ranked

They are some of the most heated matches on the calendar, but which are the best?

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 8, 2024 4 Chelsea 32 points, 2014/15

The 2014/15 season was Chelsea’s first since 2000/01 without talisman Frank Lampard, who had joined Man City in the summer.

His absence proved not to matter, as the Blues went undefeated in their first 14 games. After 12, they had amassed 32 points and were six points clear of surprise package Southampton at the top.

Summer signing Diego Costa was their main man, scoring 11 times in his first 10 Premier League games, including in wins over Liverpool and Arsenal.

3 Manchester City 34 points, 2011/12

Managed at the time by Roberto Mancini, Man City won a then-record 11 of their first 12 games, most notably thumping rivals United 6-1 at Old Trafford to record their biggest win in the Manchester derby.

During the game, Mario Balotelli unveiled an undershirt that read “Why Always Me?” after opening the scoring, seemingly responding to tabloid stories about his controversial behaviour off the pitch.

2 Liverpool 34 points, 2019/20

Liverpool won 11 of their first 12 Premier League games in the 2019/20 season to soar into an eight-point lead over second-placed Leicester City, scoring 28 goals in the process. After that, they won their next 15 on the trot.

Despite a slip in form in the final couple of months of the campaign, the Reds’ near-perfect start was more than enough to see them clinch their first league title since 1990.

Shades of Costa & Drogba: Chelsea enter talks for "incredible" Guiu upgrade

Enzo Maresca has worked wonders during his first few months as Chelsea manager, leading the club to second in the Premier League after the first 15 matches of the campaign.

The Blues have struggled to make all the Todd Boehly additions click, which is understandable given the influx of signings and the whopping £1.2b spent in the process.

However, the Italian has made easy work of the role to date, sitting just four points off leaders Liverpool, whilst maintaining their 100% record in the Europa Conference League.

He’s found settled sides for both competitions, allowing for rotation, and subsequently handing all first-team members consistent minutes across the board.

However, the 44-year-old is still craving a new centre-forward at the top end of the pitch to follow in the footsteps of two fan-favourites at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s legendary strikers over the years

In the summer of 2004, then-boss José Mourinho had the opportunity to sign many of the biggest names in Europe but instead opted for a deal to sign Didier Drogba from Marseille for £24m.

The Ivorian arrived as an unknown quantity to many, but quickly introduced himself to the fanbase, scoring 147 goals for the club during two separate spells in West London.

He produced arguably his best display in a Chelsea shirt during the 2012 Champions League final, scoring the equaliser before slotting home the winning penalty in the shootout and securing the club’s first-ever European Cup.

However, he would depart for a second time in the summer of 2015, but they already managed to sign a long-term replacement the summer prior in the form of Spanish striker Diego Costa.

The now 36-year-old cost a whopping £32m in 2014, but, like Drogba, made himself a monster hit with supporters with his hold-up play and finishing ability in front of goal.

Diego Costa Chelsea

Costa reached double figures in all three seasons, amassing a total of 59 goals in 120 games, before returning to Atletico Madrid during the summer of 2017 – banking a £25m profit in the process.

However, the club have failed to sign a replacement for either of the aforementioned players in recent years, but that could be about to change in January.

Chelsea make contact to sign PL star in January

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea have made contact with Ipswich Town over a move to sign striker Liam Delap in January.

The 21-year-old only joined the newly promoted side back in the summer, with Kieran McKenna’s men forking out £20m for his services from champions Manchester City, but he’s wasted no time in demonstrating he is capable of producing the goods in front of goal.

He’s already scored six times in his 15 outings – scoring twice as many as the Tractor Boys’ next-highest goalscorer – a signal as to how crucial he’s been in recent months.

Phillips’ report claims that they’ve already “opened talks” for the youngster to gauge if a move can be completed and how much it would set them back – likely a hefty amount given his importance to the East Anglian outfit.

There’s no denying that any deal would provide that added goal threat, something which Maresca has desperately been wanting since his appointment in the summer.

However, any deal could be bad news for one player who may fall further down the pecking order should a deal be completed during the upcoming window.

Why Delap would be an upgrade on Guiu

Spanish forward Marc Guiu joined the Blues in a £5m deal from LaLiga outfit over the summer, operating as a backup to current first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson.

However, the 18-year-old has been restricted to just 24 minutes of Premier League action to date, having to settle for Europa Conference League minutes to gain his first team experience.

He’s since made five appearances in the competition, scoring in the recent clash with FC Astana on Tuesday night – maintaining their 100% record in the competition.

There’s no question that Delap, who’s previously been dubbed “incredible” by former boss Pep Guardiola, would be an upgrade on the Spaniard – pushing Jackson for the starting role if he was to move to the Bridge.

The former City has a real combative and physical nature, as seen in his tally of 48% aerials won, leading to comparisons to Drogba and Costa in recent months.

That likeness has been noted by GOAL journalist Krishan Davis, who said Delap is ‘cut from the same cloth’ as that pair, due to his ‘imposing 6 foot 1 physique and aggressive approach belying his excellent technical ability’.

He’s also been more clinical with his efforts, achieving a better goal-per-shot ratio, adding that cutting edge in attacking areas which Maresca has sought after during his tenure in West London.

Whilst it’s unclear how much any potential deal for the Englishman would cost, it’s evident that he has all of the tools to be an immediate and long-term success in England’s top flight.

Given the club’s current league standing, the fans will expect Champions League football once again in 2025/26, with Delap’s potential addition only boosting their chances come the end of May.

Howe must finally drop 5/10 Newcastle star who had fewer touches than Pope

Newcastle United’s three-match winning run in all competitions came to an end when West Ham United handed them a reality check at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.

The 2-0 scoreline was largely deserved by the revived Hammers, who did benefit from the home side’s profligacy. Julen Lopetegui has shouldered some weighty pressure in recent weeks and a Magpies victory could have been damning for the Spanish tactician.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe-1

Alas, Newcastle sit in tenth but remain just four points off Arsenal in the top four, with top-flight fixtures against Crystal Palace and Liverpool now forthcoming.

However, the missed chance to go within two points of second-placed Manchester City will rankle some. Optimism and anticipation spread like the fever on Tyneside, but prove to be equally noxious when such belief fails to be matched on the field.

Heading into the fixture, Dan Burn was sidelined after accumulating five yellow cards. His hulking presence was sorely missed.

Newcastle struggle without Dan Burn

Burn has been an utter stalwart for Howe’s Newcastle, signed as he was from Brighton & Hove Albion for a £13m fee back in January 2022.

Dan Burn and Eddie Howe for Newcastle

One of the harbingers of the exciting new era, and frustrating in his absence on Monday evening, for the stability and steel that the 32-year-old brings has been indispensable for Howe’s side this season, especially as Sven Botman continues to work toward the end of his rehabilitation.

This season, the 6 foot 6 giant had played every Premier League minute before his suspension, completing 90% of his passes, winning 60% of his duels and averaging 4.4 clearances per game, as per Sofascore.

In his stead, Lloyd Kelly struggled to perform. Post match, the Chronicle Live branded him with a 5/10 match rating and wrote:

‘Switched off for the opener and did not take what was a big opportunity. Dan Burn will walk straight back into the team after his ban.’

Kelly wasn’t awful, but the difference was noticeable. He failed to complete each of his five attempted long balls and did little for the fluency of the home team.

Newcastle defender Lloyd Kelly against Jarrod Bowen

After scoring big Premier League victories over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, and having knocked Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup before that, Newcastle have been knocked down a peg and served a slice of reality. There is much to work on.

One thing that seems certain is that Sean Longstaff is perhaps not performing to the level that would reinforce Howe’s decision to continually start him in the middle of the park. Failing to impress against the Hammers, the homegrown talent might need to be dropped for the upcoming winter matches.

Why Howe must brutally ditch Sean Longstaff

West Ham won 60% of the duels at St. James’ Park on Monday evening, something that contributed toward the brusing defeat. Against Arsenal in the previous Tyneside clash, Newcastle won 57% of the duels – therein lies the problem.

Longstaff was emblematic of this struggle, flimsy and ineffective in his central midfield deployment. He lost four of his six contested ground duels and failed to complete his only attempted dribble, suggesting that he lacked the requisite progression to propel the hosts forward too.

Moreover, Longstaff failed to complete a single key pass despite leaving the field with a 91% pass success rate. What does that tell us? Well, considering that his 32 touches were less than that of Nick Pope (35), it would appear that the 27-year-old failed to assert himself and take control of proceedings.

Make no mistake, he wasn’t the only Magpie to toil. Bruno Guimaraes had an uncharacteristically shoddy evening, while Joe Willock was withdrawn at the break after picking up a knock. His performance, in fairness, appeared to have been hampered by this issue.

Longstaff suffered no such misfortune, though still failed to impress and was rightly taken off before the hour mark, handed a 5/10 score and lambasted for losing ‘possession a couple of times with ruthless Howe taking him off before the hour mark for Sandro Tonali.’

Sean Longstaff for Newcastle

Also bemoaned for ball watching as West Ham scythed through black and white defences and Aaron Wan-Bissaka scored his third Premier League goal (two of which, believe it or not, have now been posted at St. James’ Park), Longstaff cannot retain his starting berth next weekend.

The trip to Selhurst Park is starting to look rather important and three points must be clinched, lest the bulk of the congested European-place-challenging pack pull away.

Tonali didn’t make that much of an impact when brought on but his silky passing and superior duel success – the Italian yields a 56% success rate across the campaign so far – bespeak his suitability. It’s time for Howe to ring the change.

Lewis Miley, 18, will be hoping to make an impact once again as he nears a return from injury, and while Joelinton’s dynamism has seen him operate in frontal positions of late, his robustness makes for a meaty midfield partnership with compatriot Guimaraes.

Lewis Miley scores for Newcastle

Unfortunately, for all Longstaff’s industriousness, he was lacking in quality and conviction against West Ham, and it might be time to demote him to the bench against Crystal Palace, with victory so important – especially since Liverpool trip to Tyneside in the next match.

It’s a setback, but Newcastle have displayed their powers of recovery before and will be determined to bounce back and fight toward continental qualification. Longstaff, however, must be dropped to steady the ship.

Tom Helm sparks Derbyshire collapse as Middlesex maintain grip

Tom Helm’s two wickets in successive balls sparked a Derbyshire collapse on day three to bolster Middlesex’s hopes of a win in their LV = Insurance County Championship clash at Lord’s.With the visitors 304 for 6 in mid-afternoon chasing Middlesex’s first innings tally of 401, Helm trapped Anuj Dal lbw for 52, ending a stand of 86 for the sixth wicket with Alex Thomson. Next ball Sam Conners was sent on his way for a golden duck after missing a yorker and with Toby Roland-Jones taking two in three balls in the next over, including Thomson for 45, one shy of his career-best, Middlesex had taken 4 for 0 in nine balls.Dal and Thomson kept up their impressive games with a wicket apiece after Middlesex went in a second time, but Max Holden struck a rapid 68 not out sharing an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 141 with Robbie White (79 not out), his second half century of the game to leave the hosts 298 to the good with a day to go.Helm, soon to turn 28, has been on England’s white-ball radar for a number of years, taking part in training nets as recently as last season. Former England seamer Geoff Arnold has watched Helm a number of times and is known to be a fan, yet injuries and losses of form as well as competition for places has meant he is still shy of 100 first-class wickets.Skipper Tim Murtagh had singled Helm out as the host’s best bowler 24 hours earlier and he was belatedly to reap the rewards his stints had deserved, making his double strike at a time when Dal and Thomson appeared untroubled on a benign pitch reminiscent of those in the late noughties and early 2010s here at the home of cricket. His final return of 3 for 52 was the least he deserved for his 25 overs of hard yakka. When Josh De Caires, having survived a huge lbw shout first ball, was bowled by Conners four balls into Middlesex’s second innings, five wickets had tumbled without a run being scored.Despite the early setback, Mark Stoneman and first-innings centurion Stephen Eskinazi signalled the intent for quick runs, running hard to turn two into an unlikely three, while the former hooked Suranga Lakmal into the grandstand for six.Again, it was Dal and Thomson who briefly checked the host’s progress, Dal trapping Eskinazi lbw, while Thomson induced a rush of blood from Stoneman, whose ugly cross-batted swipe saw him caught by Conners.Holden though came out bristling with intent. The former England Lion suggested at the back end of last season he was emerging from three lean years and there were plenty of signs of that resurgence here as he raced to 50 at almost a run a ball, hoisting Thomson into the grandstand in the process.White, who’d been promoted ahead of Holden after his 65 in the first innings, began more circumspectly, but caught the mood, twice clearing the ropes himself in another polished effort, underlining his big leap forward over the last 18 months.

Aurelien Tchouameni is certainly enjoying his current purple patch at Real Madrid, with his return to form coming at the right time for head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has had to deal with multiple injuries. The French midfielder's popularity within the Madrid dressing room has surged, too, after dropping a surprising piano performance at an airport on one of Los Blancos' recent away trips.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Cadena SER, Tchouameni's Real Madrid team-mates have been impressed with his resolve to turn things around amid a furious wave of criticism. Ancelotti has had to deal with a truckload of injuries throughout the season. With Eder Militao suffering an ACL injury, and David Alaba recovering from one, the Italian manager fielded Tchouameni as a makeshift centre-back, an experiment that, to be fair, didn't work out as expected.

Earlier in the season, reports emerged that stated that the Real Madrid hierarchy was not happy with the Frenchman's performances. In fact, Tchouameni was whistled by the home supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu in a game against Celta Vigo.

In recent weeks, though, with the emergence of Raul Asencio and the return of Alaba to full fitness, Tchouameni has returned to his preferred position in midfield and looks rejuvenated in the middle of the park, producing top performances on a more consistent basis.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The same report further mentioned that Tchouameni's fluency in Spanish has also impressed those in the first team, with his strong command of the language attributed to his mother, who is a Spanish teacher.

Anything you need from us, we are always here. We look forward to having you back with us, whenever that might be.”

Coulter-Nile hurt himself during the final over of Sunrisers’ innings when he pulled up in his follow-through. He didn’t bowl anymore, and walked off the field. He has sat out Royals’ following games. He had been bought by the franchise for INR 2 crore [USD 266,000 approx.] in the February mega auction. Visitors wrap up victory inside first hour on day three in Cardiff

ECB Reporters Network23-Apr-2022Middlesex wrapped up victory against Glamorgan by an innings and 82 runs inside the first hour of the third day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match in Cardiff.Glamorgan started the day still needing 111 runs to make Middlesex bat again but, having seen the Middlesex tail put on 226 runs in their innings, there would have been a glimmer of hope. Those hopes faded very fast as two wickets fell within the first three overs of the day with Toby Roland-Jones claiming his first five wicket haul of the season.Middlesex finish this match with 22 points to Glamorgan’s three after the visitors put in a near perfect performance on the second and third days of this match. The two Glamorgan not-out batsmen at the start of the day were Sam Northeast and Michael Neser and it needed to be those two who put a real dent in the deficit. That is not what Glamorgan got. Both were dismissed by Roland-Jones within the space of eight balls, Northeast edging to second slip and Neser caught at mid-on.With just nine runs added to the overnight score Glamorgan were eight wickets down with Middlesex still more than a hundred runs in front. It was Tom Helm who finished things off, trapping Timm van der Gugten lbw before bowling Michael Hogan when Glamorgan’s No. 11 had a massive swing at a ball that crashed into his stumps. The performance of the Middlesex bowlers will leave them with some intriguing selection issues going forward. Roland-Jones, Helm, Martin Andersson and Shaheen Shah Afridi were all excellent in this game. With Ethan Bamber and Tim Murtagh waiting in the wings, it will be interesting to see who misses out in the coming matches. For Glamorgan, it will be a case of the team who were on the field in this match finding a way to replicate their performances from the victory over Nottinghamshire in the last round of the County Championship.Peter Handscombe, the Middlesex captain, was pleased with his side’s performance and full of praise for Roland-Jones, who missed four months of the 2021 season with a knee injury.”That’s pretty close to the blueprint that we want to play,” he said. “We have been doing a lot of work on our identity and how we want to go about it as a group. That was very, very impressive.”We missed [Roland-Jones] last year for quite a long period of the season so it is great to see him back, clean bill of health and just bowling beautifully. He didn’t miss, he just came in and to be relentless on his line and length, credit to him, he has obviously done a lot of work to get his body right and then in pre-season he has come out better and stronger for it.”
