Greenwood had a disappointing outing in Le Classique as Marseille went down 3-0 against Paris Saint-Germain, and was heavily criticised by his manager. However, both Marseille and Greenwood regained their form quickly as they registered a 2-1 win over Nantes in a Ligue 1 clash at the weekend, with the former Manchester United star scoring the winner.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After the nightmare outing against the reigning champions which saw Greenwood subbed off at halftime, De Zerbi slammed the winger as he claimed he "did not like" the way he played. However, the Nantes clash completely changed the head coach's perception as he labelled Greenwood a "great guy" after the game.

  • WHAT ROBERTO DE ZERBI SAID

Speaking to reporters, the former Brighton boss said: "First of all, he's a great guy. He's very committed and always gives everything he has. He's a very strong player and he makes the difference for OM. I was surprised by Greenwood last week because he didn't play well (in a 3-0 loss to PSG). He was far from his standards. Tonight, I wasn't surprised by Greenwood."

Mourinho to have final say on "fantastic" player who wants to join Arsenal

Whilst a striker remains at the top of Arsenal's shopping list going into this summer, it appears that the club are also making a move for a forward thinking defender who is eager to join Mikel Arteta's side.

Gunners look to build squad ready for next season

Though the names of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres occupied most of the headlines going into the summer, the opening of the transfer window has seen the Gunners target players in different positions.

A midfield partner for Declan Rice appears to be a priority for Edu Gaspar and Co with Arsenal reportedly offered the chance to sign PSG and Uruguay star Manuel Ugarte. Valued at around £50 million, Ugarte has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester United, meaning that the Gunners may have a fight on their hands to get their man.

Upgrades in defence are also on the minds of the Gunners' recrutiment team with Arsenal joining a growing list of clubs keen to sign Italy star Riccardo Calafiori. In their quest to bolster their backline, Arsenal are also said to be interested in Barcelona's Jules Kounde.

Whilst out-and-out defenders are on the shortlist at the Emirates, Arsenal have also seen a new development in their pursuit of a more attack-minded defensive option.

Mourinho holds the key to Arsenal transfer

As reported by Sport Witness, the Turkish press are claiming that Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho will make the final decision over the future of Arsenal target Ferdi Kadioglu. The full back had been linked with moves to both Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, however it now transpires that the final decision is in the hands of their new Portuguese manager.

Back in May it had been reported that Kadioglu had already agreed to join Arsenal, and while this proved ultimately false, Kadioglu is evidently keen on a £25m move to North London.

Whilst Mourinho's decision on the transfer is not yet known, it is unlikely that the 61-year-old will be eager to let the player leave based on his performances last season. Kadioglu featured 51 times for Fenerbahce last term, contributing three goals and five assists in the process.

Kadioglu has carried his exceptional domestic form into Euro 2024 where he has starred as one of Turkey's best talents. During his nation's Group F tie against the Czech Republic, the attacking the fullback created five chances for his team-mates, a joint record for Turkish players in a European Championship match.

At just 24 years of age, Kadioglu has already earned praise from across world football with Spartak Trnava boss Michal Gasparik saying of the player: “Ferdi is a quality and fantastic player. He plays on both wings. He is a very good player”.

Despite mutual interest from both Arsenal and Kadioglu, it now appears that 'the special one' holds all the cards as to whether the transfer gets over the line.

Umar Gul appointed Quetta Gladiators bowling coach

Former Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has been named bowling coach of Quetta Gladiators ahead of the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League. He will replace Abdul Razzaq, who had been with the franchise for last four seasons, but had to step down after the PCB’s Conflict of Interest policy which barred associations’ coaches from being involved in the league. This will be Gul’s first ever coaching role after retiring from all forms of cricket last year.Gul, 36, represented Pakistan in 47 Tests, 130 ODIs and 60 T20Is from 2003-16. He decided to quit cricket following after National T20 Cup last year, where he played for Balochistan. He retired as a modern great of Pakistan fast bowling, being a leading wicket-taker during Pakistan’s run to the 2007 World T20 final, and also the leading wicket-taker in the 2009 edition, when Pakistan won the trophy. He spent much of this time heading the world T20 rankings, with a reputation as one of the best yorker bowlers in the format. His career best, five for 6 against New Zealand at the World T20 in 2009 were, at the time, the best ever T20 bowling figures.”Gul will bring in a wealth of experience to our franchise,” franchise owner Nadeem Omar said in a statement. “He has had a tremendous T20 career and clearly a standout successor for us to replace Abdul Razzaq, who had an exceptional time with us over the years. His[Gul] knowledge of modern day cricket will surely help and support our young fast bowlers like Naseem Shah and Mohammad Husnain. I am very excited to have him on board and I have no doubt that he can offer a great deal to our bowling unit for the upcoming PSL season.”Razzaq joined Gladiators in the second edition and has since then been a part time coach at the franchise. But the stint ends with the PCB’s new policy that was bought last year in which coaches who are involved with the domestic circuit cannot sign in any capacity with the PSL franchise to avoid any conflict of interest. Razzaq is presently a head coach of one of the sixth associations – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and is an active member of the national selection committee.ESPNcricinfo had reported last year that the PCB had introduced a clear-cut code of ethics which was set to have a far-reaching effects on various employees. Its ramifications are meant to clamp down on coaches or selectors working in the system with dual jobs that could cause a potential conflict. The policy could have effected Gul’s appointment as he is also a member of the PCB’s cricket committee, but the PCB confirmed that this appointment didn’t fall foul of their code of ethics.

'Time is right to walk into a new chapter' – Faf du Plessis retires from Test cricket

Faf du Plessis, the former South Africa captain, has retired from Test cricket after 69 appearances in the format. With no Test cricket in the immediate future for South Africa, du Plessis wants to “walk into a new chapter” and focus his energies and attention primarily on T20 cricket, keeping in mind the two World Cups scheduled in 2021 and 2022.”It has been a year of refinement in the fire for us all. Uncertain were the times, but they brought clarity for me in many respects. My heart is clear and the time is right to walk into a new chapter. It has been an honour to play for my country in all the formats of the game, but the time has come for me to retire from Test cricket,” du Plessis said in a statement posted on his Instagram account. “If someone had told me 15 years ago, that I would play 69 Test matches for South Africa and captain the side, I wouldn’t have believed them.Related

“I stand in a place of utmost gratitude for a Test career full of blessings bestowed on me. Every high and low has shaped me into the man I am proud to stand up as today. In all things, those instances worked towards the good of who I believe I am today.”du Plessis, now 36, made his Test debut in Adelaide on South Africa’s 2012-13 tour, and was named the Player of the Match for his 78 and 110 not out in a memorable draw – du Plessis’ stonewalling helped South Africa bat out four-and-a-half sessions on a wearing pitch. He went on to hit ten centuries and 21 half-centuries in Tests, ending with 4163 runs at an average of 40.02.He became the Test captain, succeeding AB de Villiers, in 2016, and led South Africa in 36 Tests, before stepping down in February 2020 after the home series against England, which South Africa lost 3-1. du Plessis finished with a decent Test captaincy record, with 18 wins and 15 losses, the defeats piling up more towards the latter bit of his stint after South Africa had won 17 of the first 27 Tests he had led in. Between the start of 2019 and the end of his tenure, South Africa lost eight Tests, a run that began with the 2-0 home defeat to Sri Lanka in February 2019.du Plessis, a veteran of 143 ODIs and 50 T20Is, will continue to be available for selection in both the limited-overs formats, and has said that he is keen to be a part of the action at the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held later this year in India.”The next two years are ICC T20 World Cup years. Because of this, my focus is shifting to this format and I want to play as much of it as possible around the world so that I can be the best player I can possibly be,” he said. “I strongly believe that I have a lot to offer to the Proteas in this format. This does not mean that ODI cricket is no longer in the plans, I’m just making T20 cricket the priority in the short-term.”I will be in conversation with CSA over the next couple of months on what the future might look like for me over the next year to find a solution that works for both of us.””To lose him in this format is going to leave another big gap in the team,” Smith said of du Plessis•Getty Images

Despite his emphasis on the shortest format, du Plessis is not part of the any of the six squads that will compete in a South African domestic T20 tournament starting Friday. Earlier in the week, CSA’s director of cricket Graeme Smith had said all nationally contracted players would be obliged to play in the competition as South Africa do not have any international fixtures scheduled until April. Apart from du Plessis – no reason has been given for his absence – national all-format captain Quinton de Kock will also miss the tournament after being granted a mental-health break.”Faf is a shining testimony of what one can achieve if they commit to it. His patriotism to cricket, impeccable leadership qualities, coupled with his insatiable commitment to imparting knowledge to budding cricketers speaks volumes of the rich legacy that he leaves behind,” Pholetsi Moseki, CSA’s acting chief executive, said in a statement. “Much as CSA is saddened to see him retire from the longest format of the game, we are however comforted by the fact that he will still be part of our system, where his immense contribution awaits.”CSA would like to thank Faf for dedicating the better part of his life to cricket and making South Africa proud on and off the field. He has certainly earned himself a special place in our hearts and a favourable chapter in the ledgers of history.”Smith, the former South Africa captain, played his last Test in March 2014, the last bit of his international career overlapping with the start of du Plessis’. “Faf has been a prolific Test cricketer for the Proteas for a number of years now and to lose him in this format is going to leave another big gap in the team,” Smith said. “His commitment to the team has always been undoubtable and his transparency with Cricket South Africa about his plans has always been appreciated and we respect his decision, knowing he would not have come by it easily.”I would like to thank Faf on behalf of CSA for his years of service and dedication to the Proteas’ Test team and we look forward to engaging further with him on how he can continue contributing to the team in a meaningful way.”

Outscored Osimhen & Palmer: Chelsea could land £86m Jackson upgrade

Enzo Maresca has been tasked with bringing Chelsea back to Champions League football, looking to bolster his squad ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, and finish higher than their sixth-place finish last season.

He has already been reunited with a familiar face, with the Blues acquiring Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City, as well as Renato Veiga, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley, and Omari Kellyman.

But Chelsea could still be set for a busy few weeks in the transfer market, with links still circling around striker options and a potential left-winger, as well as many expected outgoings.

Chelsea's search for a striker

According to reports from Football Insider over the weekend, Chelsea are admirers of Sporting striker, Viktor Gyokeres, whilst other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are also interested in the Sweden international.

The 26-year-old striker has a £86m release clause according to the reports, and that fee is expected to be too high for the Premier League clubs, meaning the likelihood of a move depends on Sporting lowering their asking price.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-aston-villa-cameron-archer

Gyokeres made 50 appearances in all competitions for Sporting last season, scoring 43 goals, providing 15 assists, and totalling 4,169 minutes of football.

How Gyokeres compares Jackson

Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson made 44 appearances in all competitions in 2023/24, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists. That marked an impressive return in his first Premier League season, especially after his slow start, missing multiple big chances (24 in total).

Meanwhile, Gyokeres's 43 goals were more than the Blues' top scorer, Cole Palmer, who scored 25 goals for the club in 45 appearances, and another Chelsea striker target, Victor Osimhen, who scored 17 goals in 32 appearances for Napoli last season.

Gyokeres, who was described as a "powerhouse" by analyst Ben Mattinson, due to his ability to hold up play, bring others into play and use his aerial prowess to affect the game. His high touches in the penalty area, averaging 8.71 per 90, is due to his hold-up play, and ability to play with his back to goal.

The 26-year-old has better metrics in most areas compared to Chelsea striker Jackson, and Chelsea target Osimhen. Having a better Non-Penalty Goals metric, having more shots on target despite fewer shots than Osimhen per 90, and creating more chances for others with 0.31 assists per 90.

He also shows his complete nature, averaging 3.52 progressive carries per 90, and 2.10 successful take-ons per 90, showing his ability to create for himself and be part of build-up play due to his quality on the ball.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres provides a ready-made version of Jackson, who has shown signs of becoming the player Gyokeres is, but could need a few seasons to reach that prolific level that the Swede already provides – having only previously scored 13 times during his stint at Villarreal.

Much of the talk, of course, at present will be centred around the Blues' interest in Osimhen – amid reports regarding a potential swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku – yet Gyokeres has shown himself to be a worthy alternative.

£25m forward once likened to Neymar agrees to join West Ham after talks

A £25m forward who drew comparisons to Neymar earlier in his career has agreed to join West Ham United, according to a new report.

West Ham transfer rumours

The Irons have been relatively productive so far in the transfer market ahead of Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge at the London Stadium, with three new signings made and a number of departures secured.

Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme was the first addition of the Lopetegui era from Palmeiras and was followed by experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham who joined on a free transfer after his contract expired at Sheffield United. The latest signing was Max Kilman from Wolves in a £40m deal, reuniting with Lopetegui in the process.

Bid ready: West Ham now preparing offer to sign ex-Tottenham forward

It’s worth more than £16m.

ByCharlie Smith Jul 17, 2024

In regards to exits, the Hammers have received fees for four players – Flynn Downes, Said Benrahma, Thilo Kehrer and Nathan Trott who have joined Southampton, Lyon, Monaco and FC Copenhagen respectively.

Now, attention appears to be on more additions both at the back and in attack. Reports have suggested that West Ham have agreed a loan with an option-to-buy deal for defender Jean-Clair Todibo, however, he has his heart set on a move to Juventus.

In the final third, a £25m offer has been submitted for Alexander Sorloth, who is currently plying his trade at Villarreal. Another forward to be heavily linked is Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson. There were claims that the Hammers opened preliminary talks to sign the 24-year-old, valued at £25m, and there has now been a further update.

Nelson agrees to leave Arsenal for West Ham

According to TEAMtalk, Nelson has agreed to join West Ham, who are currently in pole position to seal a deal ahead of Crystal Palace. The report claims that Nelson has said “yes” to the Irons, who are pushing to seal a deal by the end of the week. A long-term offer is on the table for Nelson at the London Stadium, where he will get the opportunity to play regular first-team football, something which has been a major factor in his decision.

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

There have been positive conversations between West Ham officials and Nelson, who could even sign in time to join the team on their pre-season tour of the USA.

Former Arsenal star Martin Keown compared Nelson to Brazil superstar Neymar after a Europa League game against BATE Borisov when Nelson was 17 years of age. "Touches you'd associate with Neymar. 17 years of age! It's quite phenomenal, the ability this boy has."

In total, Nelson has gone on to make 89 senior appearances for the Gunners, winning four games against West Ham, but by the looks of it, he could soon be a Hammers player capable of turning out on either wing or even in an attacking midfield role, versatility in the final third which may appeal to Lopetegui.
