CHILE VAI À LUTA E ESTUFA A REDE.

Journalist drops worrying injury update regarding “excellent” West Brom ace

Reliable journalist Lewis Cox has dropped a concerning injury update regarding an "excellent" West Brom player, ahead of their final-day clash with Preston North End this weekend.

West Brom look to seal playoff spot

It has been a positive season for the Baggies, who went into the campaign with high hopes of earning promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League.

Admittedly, Carlos Corberan's side haven't secured automatic promotion, which is something the fans would have hoped for, but a playoff place now looks on the cards.

West Brom haven't got over the finish line yet, however, and on Saturday lunchtime, they face a crucial final game of the season at home to Preston. Corberan's men sit sixth in the Championship and two points clear of Hull City below them, so they know that victory this weekend will ensure that their season is extended, ahead of what is hopefully a triumphant day at Wembley later this month.

In fact, a draw should also be enough for the Baggies, given their superior goal difference, but a win for Hull at struggling Plymouth Argyle, coupled with defeat for West Brom, would seal a disastrous final day at the Hawthorns.

Worrying West Brom injury update

Taking to X ahead of the game, Cox admitted that Brandon Thomas-Asante is a doubt for West Brom's clash with Preston on Saturday, due to a hamstring issue: "Thomas-Asante been nursing hamstring discomfort, too, but optimism there."

Brandon Thomas-Asante for West Brom.

In his report for The Express & Star, Cox also shared Corberan's comments on Thomas-Asante, with the Baggies manager saying: "Asante couldn’t start the week well. Before the previous game, he was still feeling something in his hamstring. With the minutes he was playing, he still felt something. It’s not muscle, it’s nerve, but he didn’t train the first day of this week. Right now, he’s training normally with the group."

Not having Thomas-Asante available for such an important game would be an undoubted blow for West Brom, considering the overall impact he has made this season. The 25-year-old has scored 11 times in the Championship, appearing in 38 of his side's 45 matches in the competition, also registering two assists.

Corberan is clearly an admirer of his attacking ace, too, saying of him after the 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers earlier in the season: "Excellent, not only for the goals but the way he was linking the play and how he was helping the team build attacks. The most important thing with Brandon is his mentality and his physical condition to play and always be ready to help the team."

The hope is that Thomas-Asante is at least fit enough for the substitutes' bench this weekend, but either way, West Brom have to back themselves to have enough quality to overcome a Preston side with little to play for.

It would then be a case of getting the attacker fully fit again for the playoffs, as the Baggies look to return to the Premier League after three seasons away.

Farke must immediately ditch 3/10 Leeds man after Saints shocker

And so the lottery that is the Championship playoffs beckon for Leeds United, with events elsewhere seeing the Yorkshire side's hopes of securing automatic promotion extinguished – Ipswich Town booking their place in next season's Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

In the end, the Tractor Boys' result was immaterial for those back at Elland Road as Daniel Farke's side meekly slipped to defeat at the hands of Southampton, a first-half tap-in from Will Smallbone clinching proceedings after earlier efforts from Adam Armstrong and Joel Piroe.

Now set to face a two-legged shootout with Norwich City in the battle for a Wembley berth, the Whites hardly have the best momentum heading into those pivotal fixtures after winning just one of their last six in the league – four of which ended in defeat.

The onus will be on Farke to put things right against his former employers by shaking things up, with Georginio Rutter – among others – potentially fearing for their place in the side moving forward.

Georginio Rutter's stats vs Southampton

It's fair to say that the Frenchman wasn't the worst performer on the day – we'll come onto that – but the club's record signing certainly didn't help matters after looking off the boil once again in his number ten berth.

Daniel Farke

The former Hoffenheim man does boast a remarkable tally of six goals and 17 assists in the Championship this season, although the last of those contributions came against Millwall back in mid-March.

As LeedsLive's Beren Cross noted, it was the 'latest episode in a poor series since his hernia surgery', with Rutter unsurprisingly hooked on the hour mark following what was a truly ineffectual outing.

Georginio Rutter

At his best the creative hub in the side – as his assist record can attest to – the mercurial talent was restricted to just 29 touches in all, losing the ball on 11 occasions and failing to provide a single key pass.

Not only that, but the 22-year-old was also found wanting off the ball after winning just four of his 11 total duels, with his all-round woes perhaps only overshadowed by the limp display of one of his teammates – Junior Firpo.

Junior Firpo's game in numbers vs Saints

After an injury-hit first few seasons in English football, Firpo – to his credit – has found a new lease of life under Farke of late, helping to ease the concerns surrounding what has been a problem position for the club at left-back.

Seven assists from that full-back berth represent an encouraging campaign on the whole for the 27-year-old, although it was undoubtedly a day to forget against the Saints, as he simply withered on the big occasion.

87% pass accuracy

9/12 ground duels won

5 tackles

4 fouls won

14x possession lost

0/3 crosses completed

As Cross – who awarded him a measly 3/10 match rating – noted after the game, Firpo 'always looked like the weak point' from the off, having been caught somewhat sleeping for Armstrong's opener with Southampton players simply queuing up behind him at the back post.

While his fault for that early effort is perhaps up for debate, there can be nowhere to hide from the defender's "embarrassing" lapse for the visitors' second – as Cross stated on Twitter – having been beaten by Kyle Walker-Peters' far too easily after assuming the ball had gone out of play.

On the face of it, his performance may have looked rather solid having won nine of his 12 ground duels, yet his involvement in those two key moments will likely have had Farke tearing his out.

The question now remains whether Firpo should keep his place for when the playoffs commence, with there certainly justification for Farke to immediately and ruthlessly drop the struggling star to the bench against the Canaries.

Arsenal now appear favourites to sign £60 million striker after agent talks

Arsenal now appear favourites to sign a £60 million striker for manager Mikel Arteta, coming after they contacted his agents in pursuit of a deal.

Arteta hoping for Tottenham favour as Arsenal chase title

Both the Gunners and Man City are in equally imperious form heading into the final day, with the duo winning their last five Premier League games and showing absolutely no sign of letting up.

Arsenal offered chance to sign "great" forward in £50m+ transfer

Arsenal currently top the table after their 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday, courtesy of Leandro Trossard's tap-in at the near post after 20 minutes, but they're still relying on a slip up from Pep Guardiola's side to stand any chance of clinching their first domestic crown in two decades.

The Sky Blues are usually unstoppable at this stage of the campaign, but Arsenal deserve a lot of credit for replicating that air of invincibility lately. Arteta's men are right on City's heels, and ironically, arch north London rivals Tottenham could do them a major favour this evening.

Interestingly, Guardiola is yet to taste a league win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since Spurs moved to their state of the art new ground, but they did manage a 1-0 victory there in the FA Cup earlier this season. Despite potentially helping Arsenal, Lilywhites boss Ange Postecoglou insists his side will go all out to get a result, especially since Champions League football is still on the cards for them.

"You think the majority of our fans are not going to want us to win? I don't see it that way. I think the majority of our fans will create the atmosphere they always create at our games," said Postecoglou on their clash with Man City.

"We've got a game of football to win and that's what we'll try to do. Man City haven't won it yet and if you think they have, then it becomes an issue because we're rolling out a red carpet for them and I'm not going to do that."

Amid this dramatic end to the season for Arsenal, and one which could have a fairytale ending if all goes to plan, sporting director Edu is already laying out transfer plans for next season.

Fabrizio Romano backs that Arsenal will sign an "important" new striker this summer as part of their strategy for 2024/2025, regardless of whether they do end this season as champions.

Arsenal appear favourites to sign Zirkzee after contacting agents

One forward who's been repeatedly linked is Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee, with the Netherlands ace called "fantastic" and a striker who "has everything" by AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

TEAMtalk have an update on their pursuit this week, and they claim Arteta's side have already approached his agents. They add that Arsenal are in a "strong position" to sign Zirkzee this summer, mainly because, if he leaves Bologna, a move to England is seen as most likely.

Man United are also in the mix, but the 22-year-old is keen to play Champions League football and Erik ten Hag's side cannot offer that. Arsenal can, though, which makes them "best placed" to complete a deal for the £60 million forward as things stand.

Nottingham Forest hit gold selling £13m man who’s not scored since May 2023

No one could've predicted the week that has taken place at Nottingham Forest, with a monumental array of situations unfolding at the club.

From throwing away a lead with 15 minutes to go against Chelsea, to all but securing Premier League survival, it's not been a dull week for the supporters.

However, the drama took a turn over the last couple of days, with owner Evangelos Marinakis claiming in an interview that he would like the Reds to move away from the City Ground in the years ahead – a ground that has been the club's home for 126 years.

Unsurprisingly, the decision hasn't gone down well with the supporters with many unhappy at the potential move from their iconic home to Toton, a suburb on the outskirts of the city – with the proposed land for the new ground closer to Derby County's Pride Park than Nottingham city centre.

No one can fault the owner's ambition to take the club forward, demonstrating intent that wasn't present under former owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi.

The Kuwaiti wanted to transform the club but failed miserably and offloaded many key first-team players to the dismay of the fanbase.

However, he did make the right call in selling one player, with one former Forest talent unable to replicate his good form at the City Ground following his move back in 2016.

Oliver Burke's stats at Nottingham Forest

Oliver Burke, a product of the Reds youth setup, made his debut for the club during the 2014/15 campaign, following a rapid rise through the Nigel Doughty academy.

His first start for the first team came in the 0-0 draw against Charlton Athletic during the opening months of the 2015/16 season, following a handful of substitute appearances in the campaign prior.

The Scotsman finished the season with two goals in 21 appearances, a respectable tally for a youngster in his breakthrough season in England's second tier.

However, it would be the 2016/17 campaign that caught the eye – finding the back of the net four times in the opening five matches of the season, leading to an offer too good to refuse.

German club RB Leipzig plumped £13m for the youngster before the closure of the window, an offer that owner Al-Hasawi accepted with Burke leaving the club to play in the Bundesliga.

However, after such a promising start to his professional career in the East Midlands, his form has evaporated, with the now 27-year-old struggling in the Championship this season.

Oliver Burke's market value in 2024

Nearly eight years on from his big-money move to Germany, the winger has failed to recapture any of his good form, failing to score or assist a single goal in the second tier for Birmingham City, with his last goal coming for Millwall back in May 2023.

As a result of his dismal form for the Blues, his value has plummeted, with the attacker now only valued at €2m (£1.7m), as per Transfermarkt – a drop of over £11m since his departure from Forest.

Although former owner Al-Hasawi annoyed a lot of supporters during his time at the club, he undoubtedly made a brilliant call in selling the youngster, with his deal helping the Reds avoid any further FFP issues after the previous problems in 2014.

Man City eyeing move for £65m star who’s Ratcliffe’s top target for Man Utd

Manchester City are "heavily tracking" one of Manchester United's top summer transfer targets, it has emerged, with both sides also facing competition for his signature from fellow Premier League giants Arsenal.

Man City in need of another wide player

Having struggled by their own high standards, City are looking for fresh impetus this summer and it is likely to come in wide areas. The arrival of Jeremy Doku was offset by the departures of Riyad Mahrez and Cole Palmer last summer, leaving Pep Guardiola's side short of a natural winger.

All of Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb and Jeremy Doku have been stationed on the right-hand side at points this season, but they appear to be one player light in that position with Foden and Silva both preferring to drift centrally. Guardiola seems to have recognised this too, and could rectify it this summer by snatching a Manchester United target away from them.

Man City eyeing Michael Olise move

Now, The Guardian reports that Manchester City are "heavily tracking" Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise as they look for reinforcements in attack this summer. The Frenchman has missed parts of the season through a pair of hamstring injuries, but has scored six goals and grabbed three assists in just nine starts this season, underlining his quality.

City won't be alone in their chase of the 22-year-old though, with Arsenal and Manchester United both also reportedly keen and the forward thought to have a £65m release clause in his contract in south London, up from the £35m that Chelsea activated last summer to no avail.

The Gunners are looking to find competition for Bukayo Saka, who has once again been one of Arsenal's most regular appearance makers this season despite carrying an injury. Meanwhile, it has recently been claimed that Olise is Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS's top transfer target to replace Antony at Old Trafford.

However, both City and Arsenal have an advantage over Manchester United, with the reliable David Ornstein reporting that Olise will likely only leave Selhurst Park this summer if it is for a Champions League side, something that the Red Devils are guaranteed not to be next season after a disappointing Premier League season.

Olise's ability when fit is no secret, with ex-Manchester City defender turned pundit Micah Richards dubbing him a future superstar and claiming he is "going to the very top".

“He is going to be world-class. He’s just one of them young players who need to be guided in the right way when he leaves Palace, no disrespect to Palace fans, they probably want that money at some stage to rebuild anyway."

“But when he leaves, if he picks the right team where he’s allowed to express himself, he’s going to be a superstar. He’s that good. I remember watching him at the Etihad a couple of seasons ago. It’s not just his dribbling, it’s his decision-making – when to lay off the ball and his first touch is sublime. Yeah, he’s going to the very top.”

If the latest reports are anything to go by, he may have his pick of the Premier League when he chooses to move on, and City could be hoping that he opts for them over their rivals.

Jackie du Preez, the Zimbabwean who played two Tests for South Africa in the 1966-67 season, has died in Harare at the age of 77. du Preez was suffering from a long-standing heart condition.du Preez played in pre-independent Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) and was one of several of his countrymen, including Mike Procter, to go on to represent South Africa. He was a legspinner, unusual in the country at the time, and forced his way into the South African national side with a haul of 6 for 95 in a three-day tour match between Australia and Rhodesia prior to their five-Test series in South Africa. With the series 2-1 in South Africa’s favour, du Preez played in the fourth and fifth matches in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. The Johannesburg Test was drawn, leaving the series finale as a must-win for Australia, but South Africa were victors by seven wickets to take the series 3-1.Though du Preez did not make a major impression with the ball or bat in the series, he did in the field. Together with Eddie Barlow, he combined to run out Bill Lawry before the Australian had faced a ball in the fifth Test, putting South Africa on the front foot early on. He bowled in only the second innings at the Wanderers where he took 2 for 22, took a wicket without conceding any runs in two overs in the first innings at St George’s Park and went wicketless in the second innings. He also registered a duck on each of the two occasions that he batted. After that series, du Preez went on to have a long and successful first-class career, scoring more than 4,000 runs and falling four short of 300 wickets. Post-retirement, he served on Zimbabwe Cricket’s selection panel.

Carsley took charge of the senior English side as a stop-gap manager after Gareth Southgate resigned from his post following the team's heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain. Carsley was initially brought in to manage the Three Lions for their first two Nations League group stage matches in September, but The Telegraph reports that the FA raised his salary significantly earlier in August, in what could be a hint towards a permanent position.
