Jamaica’s spin duo of Nikita Miller and Damion Jacobs spun a web around Leeward Islands to register a massive 157-run win in St Kitts
ESPNcricinfo staff20-Nov-2017WICB
Jamaica’s duo of Nikita Miller and Damion Jacobs spun a web around Leeward Islands to register a massive 157-run win in St Kitts. Left-arm spinner Miller collected 10 wickets while Jacobs picked two three-fors to bundle out Leeward for 232 and 144. Jamaica, however, are still second from bottom on the table after picking 18.4 points from the win.Jamaica put on a respectable score of 342 after winning the toss, on the back of half-centuries from Paul Palmer (86), Assad Fudadin (58) and John Campbell (57) as offspinner Rahkeem Cornwall’s 4 for 86 meant Jamaica didn’t put on a competitive total. The Leeward batsmen could not capitalise though, as Miller’s 5 for 56 and Jacobs’ 3 for 35 allowed only one batsman – Montcin Hodge – to reach 50, and they conceded a lead of 110.Cornwall took four wickets again and troubled Jamaica’s middle order to restrict them to 191, as No. 7 Derval Green provided resistance with his 51. Jacobs and Miller troubled Leeward with the bat too, putting on 46 for the ninth wicket before combining to take eight wickets as Leeward chased 302 for a win. With only two batsmen reaching 30, they were kept to 144 for only six points but are still second on the table behind Guyana.
Leeds United could be set to secure a fine coup, opting for a Championship-proven star to spearhead their return to the Premier League…
Who else will Leeds United be signing this summer?
Having already welcomed four new faces to Elland Road, it could be easy to assume that this window has been a successful one thus far for Daniel Farke.
However, that has been far from the case. With players refusing to show up for matches, and others forcing loan exits to avoid the mess they created, the atmosphere in Yorkshire is far from ideal for the new German manager.

That being said, some positivity does remain, with TEAMtalk now offering a beacon of hope by referencing them as one of the interested parties looking at Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.
They are said to be very keen on the 27-year-old gem, who FootballTransfers value at €10.9m (£9m). However, they will have to battle with a host of top-flight clubs to secure his signature.
How good is Josh Brownhill?
Having spent the last few years of his career at Turf Moor, it feels like only recently has the midfield general began realising his potential after spells at Preston North End and Bristol City
After all, last season did mark a standout one for the one-time Manchester United academy graduate, who shone by showcasing his improved creativity.
Clarets boss Vincent Kompany is the man responsible for such an upturn, as he was thanked by the midfielder:
"He’s liberated us, because he believes in us, he believes we’re good players and we can win games. The lads who are still here were devastated by relegation last season. We just wanted to get back up and I’m very happy we did."
A key cog in that promotion push, already that pedigree will have caught Farke's eye, as he seeks to replicate that form.
Should Brownhill join and translate his form from Lancashire to west Yorkshire and they will certainly be in a fine position to do so.
After all, the Warrington-born machine did score seven times in the Championship during the 2022/23 campaign alongside a further eight assists. This helped him earn his 7.27 average rating as he also added 1.8 key passes and 2.2 tackles per game, via Sofascore.
josh-brownhill
Sky Sports' EFL pundit Lee Hendrie had predicted such a starring year as he claimed back in 2021:
"Josh Brownhill, I think he is a fabulous player, I really do. Out of [Sander] Berge and him, I'd take Brownhill all day just because Josh Brownhill reminds me of John McGinn.
"He's very energetic, he's very neat and tidy on the ball, he gets up and down the pitch well and you know what you're getting when you're getting a player from Burnley, Sean Dyche, what he expects."
Such offensive impetus from deep could easily draw comparisons with Ilkay Gundogan, who too earned praise for how his scoring numbers improved to help Manchester City claim a historic treble.
Whilst the German has already made his switch to Barcelona, he left the Etihad a hero, having posted 18 goal contributions across all competitions.
Then, to compare his underlying figures with Brownhill's, it is clear to see the similarities. He too posted a 7.13 average rating in the Premier League, buoyed by 1.3 key passes and one tackle per game, via Sofascore.
City boss Pep Guardiola led the praise for his midfielder and captain, noting:
"Ilkay shows again, again and again his quality and his importance. His commitment to all of us at the club. It's not just scoring goals, he has his momentum because against Leeds, he was the player and again here. He can do everything."
Whilst he starred on a far larger stage, Brownhill shares enough of those starring attributes to suggest he could emulate his figures once again under Farke and help spearhead another promotion charge.
In the 40th over of Sri Lanka’s chase, Thisara Perera smacked Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer for 17 runs. Sri Lanka suddenly needed to score at less than six an over to win the game, and for the first time, the situation was under their control. In the next over, Sikandar Raza gave away only three runs, breaking Perera’s flow and making him wait until the 45th over to find his next big hit. After landing one deep into the midwicket stands, Perera went for another big hit but mistimed it towards midwicket. Raza came running in, dived forward, and completed a difficult catch. A crucial catch. Zimbabwe knew they had unlocked the final door. A win over a major team in a neutral venue, after 15 years, was in their grasp. They didn’t let go, and Tendai Chatara did the needful in the 49th over.”The plan was to drag the game as far as possible,” Raza said. “It is a matter of who panics first. Thisara was making it look exceptionally easy. He was also here for a BPL-winning side; he is a world-class performer. When the game gets smaller, he can take it away from you very quickly. He did that today as well.”Fortunately for us, he mistimed one and we managed to take that catch. We always knew that this game wasn’t going into the last over so once we had that wicket, we just wanted to drive the last nail in the coffin.”Raza was in the thick of things for most of the 98.1 overs of this contest. At one point, it was hard for the TV cameras to peel away from him. Apart from Perera’s catch, he took another at short midwicket to get rid of Angelo Mathews to give Blessing Muzarabani his maiden ODI wicket.Raza also removed Kusal Perera, batting on 80, when it looked like he was about to make the 291-run chase a comfortable one for Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe had set this competitive target thanks, again, to Raza, who scored an unbeaten 81, with many of his boundaries coming in the slog overs. It was yet another instance of Raza putting in important contributions for Zimbabwe when it mattered most in a contest. He said that much of his confidence was down to the selectors’ faith in him and most of his teammates.”I think consistency in selection definitely helped,” he said. “I think we have gone with the same squad for a lot of series and that is certainly showing up. When you have a guy next to you in the change room for a longer period of time, it gives you that extra confidence.”You can call what the shots the batsman is going to be playing; this is the trust we have among ourselves. This team is a band of brothers and we have been playing together for a long time. We back each other regardless of the situation. We back each other to defend 120.”Raza said the selection consistency had fed into the team’s mindset as well, and that they were now determined to go into the World Cup qualifiers, to be held in March and April in Zimbabwe, with a message for the rest of the teams in that competition.”The secret behind [Zimbabwe’s recent upturn] is the trust, character, faith among ourselves,” he said. “We are determined to go into the World Cup qualifiers with a strong message we want to send out to all the teams.”
The Enzo Maresca era at Leicester City has got off to an absolutely flying start.
The Foxes have triumphed in two EFL Cup games and four Championship matches, sitting at the top of the league table.
Moreover, they’re the only second-tier club to have won all their matches and look on course for an instant promotion back to the Premier League.
However, with the transfer window shutting on 1st September, Maresca is looking to add more reinforcements to the squad and the club are reportedly on the verge of another signing…
What’s the latest Leicester City transfer news?
According to journalist Nathan Gissing, winger Silko Thomas is set to join Leicester on a free transfer from Chelsea.
The "front-footed" teenage wide man – as once lauded by Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom – supposedly had offers from Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers but has agreed a three-year deal.
The 2021 FA Cup winners have already recruited the likes of Harry Winks, Conor Coady, and Stephy Mavididi to add some valuable and established experience.
Who is Silko Thomas?
Across 60 appearances for various Chelsea youth sides, Thomas has registered 15 goal contributions before being released by the Blues earlier in the summer.
Nathan Hemmingham of the Yorkshire Live described Thomas as an attacker who is comfortable playing on both sides, blessed with pace and skill.
If a move to the King Power is finalised, it will end the 19-year-old’s association with the club he’s been a part of since U10s level.
Interestingly, his game time is almost equally split between both wings as this versatility will be an attractive trait to Maresca.
Another player who also possesses this boundless adaptability is Kasey McAteer, who kickstarted his Leicester career in emphatic fashion on the weekend.
The joyous technician netted twice in the 2-1 victory over Rotherham United whilst also managing two successful dribbles, three key passes, and winning six duels, as per Sofascore.
Kasey-McAteer-Leicester-City
Afterwards, Maresca was thrilled with the youngster’s performance and said:
“I was very happy with him, for the two goals but also the way he works off the ball. He helps a lot.
“He is working the right way and he helps us out. I’m happy for him and the academy.
“I really like him, not just because he scored. I like the way he works and he sacrifices. He helps a lot without the ball. He is an important player.”
This sentiment has been echoed by Wimbledon coach Johnnie Jackson, who awarded McAteer 18 League Two appearances in a loan spell earlier in the year:
“His ability is there for all to see, but he has a real versatility about him in the positions he can play. He has a wonderful attitude to his work.”
Pushed by Thomas’ potential involvement, McAteer will need to continue with this level of consistency and influence throughout the notoriously long and gruelling Championship season,
Both players can be extremely useful options for Maresca and could form part of an interchangeable frontline, whilst anchoring either Kelechi Iheanacho or Jamie Vardy.
The 19-year-old on a free transfer looks like an absolute bargain, given what the manager could do with his talents, whilst it also seems that Leicester possess the attacking assets to formulate a serious title charge and their return to the Premier League looks to be on the horizon.

Four days, floodlights, pink ball – on Boxing Day, Port Elizabeth will witness a Test match like none before
The Preview by Firdose Moonda25-Dec-20171:59
What will the four-day Boxing Day Test look like?
Big pictureFive years ago, Cricket South Africa decided to try something new over Boxing Day. Instead of host a Test, as has become a (modern, in this country) tradition, they opted to play limited-overs matches against New Zealand in the hope that the shorter format would encourage a more festive vibe. But they misread the mood severely and were met with a barrage of complaints from people who were expecting to see players in whites in the week between Christmas and New Year.Yes, even though stadiums are only a quarter-full, if that, over the Boxing Day, South Africans enjoy the fixture (even if only from the comfort of their living rooms) and CSA resolved not to experiment like that again.Yet, here we are.Because India took their time confirming fixtures and ultimately decided they would only be ready to play in 2018, CSA opted to schedule this year’s Boxing Day match over four days and under lights. The ICC has agreed it can be a called a Test but there are doubters, the most prominent of which are the South African players. As recently as October, Test captain Faf du Plessis and opening batsman Dean Elgar rubbished the idea of four-day Tests and now they find themselves playing one. Some fans are unhappy with the concept too, others with the quality of the opposition, but all in all, the next four days could end up being nothing more than a bit of fun for South Africa. It’s a way to end a tough year, in which the goodwill of victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has been overshadowed by the disappointment of a limp Champions Trophy effort, a Test series loss to England, and the postponement of the T20 Global League, with something positive. No disrespect to Zimbabwe but much, much tougher contests await their hosts and South Africa could well be regarding this as a warm-up match for India. For Zimbabwe, though, this may be the last Test they play for a while. With financial constraints inhibiting their ability to host Tests, a new Test league all but excluding them, and a World Cup to qualify for, the shorter formats will be their focus in the immediate future but this is an opportunity to make a case to be invited to play more Tests. So far, Zimbabwe have done the opposite. They lost to a CSA Invitation XI – a team with only four players with franchise experience – in Paarl and will need every member of their XI to perform if they are to compete. As a country, Zimbabwe will remember 2017 as a year of some progress because it was the year Robert Mugabe’s 37-year presidency ended. As a cricket team that performed well in Sri Lanka before losing to West Indies at home, the next four days may determine their assessment of themselves this year.Form guideSouth Africa WWLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first) Zimbabwe DLLLLIn the spotlightIt has not been an easy 2017 for Vernon Philander but he has the chance to end it on a positive note as he makes his return after a forgettable England tour. Philander went into that trip gingerly after an ankle niggle, suffered from illness in the third Test, and was kept out of the fourth by injury. In the aftermath, he had several notables, including former captain Graeme Smith, questioning his commitment and conditioning. Now, Philander has the chance to set the record straight. This format should suit him perfectly and he could cause serious problems, particularly under lights, against batsmen uncomfortable against the moving ball, and could also use this match to set himself up for a big summer and ensure his career is not, as Smith suggested, on the wane.Since recommitting to Zimbabwe in September, Brendan Taylor has scored two centuries at domestic level but only 85 runs in four Test innings and this is his chance to close that gap. Taylor is the highest-profile member of the line-up and as a consequence the one most expected to step up for a big occasion. For Zimbabwe, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. The squad is in awe of South Africa and know that a strong performance against them might open doors in domestic cricket here. Taylor was already due to play in the postponed T20 Global League and is the only name most of the South African squad know; he will want to keep himself foremost in their mind.Getty Images
Team newsSouth Africa will be without du Plessis, who earlier gave himself only a 60% chance of playing, on Christmas Eve. De Villiers will lead instead and with all four premier fast bowlers fit, he will have to make a choice of which three to pick, as it is given spinner Keshav Maharaj will play. One of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel is likely to sit out.South Africa (probable): 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Temba Bavuma, 5 AB de Villiers (capt), 6 Quinton de Kock (wk), 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Dale Steyn/Morne MorkelThough Solomon Mire has yet to show all the qualities of a Test opener, Zimbabwe are likely to persist with him in the role. On paper, that gives them a strong top six with the experience of Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor surrounding the promise of Mire, PJ Moor and Sikandar Raza. With Regis Chakabva at No.7 and their attack of three frontline seamers and captain Graeme Cremer, they have the makings of a well-balanced side.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Solomon Mire, 3 Craig Ervine, 4 Brendan Taylor, 5 PJ Moor, 6 Sikandar Raza, 7 Regis Chakabva (wk), 8 Graeme Cremer (capt), 9 Kyle Jarvis, 10 Blessing Muzarabani, 11 Christopher MpofuPitch and conditionsWhile AB de Villiers described one of the practice pitches as “spicy”, Port Elizabeth is normally known for producing slower surfaces that can be suited to spin, which is what Faf du Plessis is expecting. Zimbabwe will welcome that news because it means the surface will resemble those they play on back home, although they will remain wary of twilight conditions and extra movement from the pink ball. The weather for the entire Test is forecast to be pleasant, with temperatures in the mid-20s and no rain.Stats and triviaDean Elgar is currently third on the Test run-scorers list for 2017. He is 43 runs behind Cheteshwar Pujara and 30 shy of Steven Smith and could use this Test to leapfrog them both. Dale Steyn needs five wickets to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading Test wicket-taker. Playing 98 overs in a day, technically makes this closer to a four-and-a-half-day Test, with 392 overs planned, 87% of a regular five-day Test’s 450 scheduled overs. Zimbabwe last played a Test in South Africa more than 12 years ago, in March 2005. They have only played three Tests in the country and lost all of them by an innings.Quotes”The great thing for Zimbabwe cricket is the fact that they’ve got some senior players back into the team. Test cricket is now something that is a big thing for them to push forward. It’s great to see smaller countries getting an opportunity to play Test cricket.” “Obviously we haven’t played under lights a lot recently, and particularly against the pink ball, so understanding the conditions and what the pink ball does will be important for us.”
Tottenham Hotspur's late deadline day attempts to sign Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly have taken another transfer twist.
Who will Spurs sign on deadline day?
Spurs and new manager Ange Postecoglou are reliably believed to have finally agreed a deal to sign winger Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.
The Wales international, who has been chased by Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy for much of the summer transfer window, looks set to join the likes of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz in signing for Tottenham.
Fabrizio Romano has even given his famous "here we go" as the north Londoners target travels to the English capital for a medical; coming as brilliant news so late in the day.
However, amid d-day links to both Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher and Bournemouth's Kelly, there is reason to believe Spurs may not be entirely done with Johnson's pending arrival.
Indeed, according to an update in the last hour from The Times and journalist Gary Jacob, Kelly continues to attract serious late interest from Spurs.
Reports today have suggested that Tottenham had a bid rejected for the defender earlier today, but despite that knock-back, Postecoglou could potentially add another defender to his ranks before the 11pm cut off.
Kelly, who started 23 league games for Bournemouth last season as they comfortably avoided relegation in the end, is currently subject to an incoming new and improved offer from Spurs.
Jacob writes, as relayed on their live blog [14:05], that the Lilywhites are "set to increase" their bid for the 24-year-old, coming after they agreed a £45m deal to sign Johnson from Forest.
Little else is said on the nature of this proposal or figures behind it, but there is reason to believe more players could come in tonight, as Spurs historically like to do late deals.
How good is Lloyd Kelly?
The centre-back ranked in Bournemouth's top three for clearances and blocks made per 90 last season, according to WhoScored; possibly highlighting why Tottenham are considering a move for him this late on in the window.
Ahead of a long season, Spurs and Postecoglou arguably need defensive depth in case of serious injuries to the likes of van de Ven or Cristian Romero.
Ange Postecoglou
Former Bournemouth boss Scott Parker, commenting on Kelly's "quality" ability last year, was effusive in his praise for the player during their top flight promotion push.
"I think Lloyd Kelly has got the attributes and the ability to be a top Premier League centre-half," said Parker.
"And I think we are blessed and very, very lucky to have someone of his quality, really.
"You take players like Lloyd probably for granted in the sense of he makes things look very effortless and easy.
"And when you're watching him on the eye, you put someone else in that position of a ball down the side of a defender or one in the channel and getting in a foot race, he makes it look very easy, that you probably never appreciate it.
"The standards he sets are very high as a captain of this team and he's still so young in his age that he's got a lot on him.”
ESPNcricinfo understands that Stokes requested permission to leave the court via a back door in the hope of avoiding an anticipated media scrum

ECB’s Lord Patel happy for Stokes to make his England return
Ben Stokes’ hopes of avoiding the spotlight when he attends court next week appear to have been dashed.ESPNcricinfo understands that Stokes, who is set to appear in Bristol Magistrates Court on February 13 to answer charges of affray, requested permission to leave the court via a back door in the hope of avoiding an anticipated media scrum. That permission has been denied, however, meaning Stokes will have to enter and leave the court through the front door.Stokes was arrested following an incident outside a bar in the city on September 25. Two other men, Ryan Hale and Ryan Ali, have also been called to attend court on the same day in connection to the incident. Stokes has intimated that he will plead not guilty.Stokes missed the Ashes after the ECB decided he would not be considered for selection until a decision had been made over whether he was to be charged. They have subsequently cleared him for selection and he is expected to depart for New Zealand shortly after his appearance in Bristol Magistrates Court. It had initially been hoped that Stokes would link up with the squad for the start of the T20 leg of the tour in New Zealand, but a day after he was made available the court date was confirmed for February 13 which is when England play in Wellington. He will face the ECB’s disciplinary committee following the culmination of criminal proceedings. It is entirely possible that date could be anything up to 12 months away.
Newcastle United could still make a move for Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney despite rival interest from a European club and the addition of Lewis Hall, according to pundit Frank McAvennie.
Why would Newcastle need Hall and Tierney?
Earlier this month, Eddie Howe made it clear he wanted to sign one more player this summer, in order to have the "ideal depth" in his squad, and the manager has now gotten his wish, with Chelsea's Hall joining on loan, with an obligation to buy.
Hall has arrived at St. James' Park for the season, and Newcastle must pay £28m plus £7m in add-ons to sign him permanently, with Howe seemingly bringing the 18-year-old in to play at left-back, having been in the market for a new option in that area of the pitch throughout the summer.
However, Jacob Whitehead makes it clear in his piece for The Athletic that Hall is not just a left-back, favouring a box-to-box midfield role, so Howe could choose to utilise him in a left-sided number 8 position.
However, Howe has seemingly brought the youngster in to strengthen his defence, which means there may be no reason to bring Tierney in on loan, having previously identified the Arsenal ace as a target.
Even so, pundit Frank McAvennie believes the Magpies could make a late swoop for the Scotland international, who he thinks can do a lot better than Real Sociedad, with the Spanish side recently being named as potential suitors.
In an interview with Football Insider, McAvennie said: “I think he is better than that.
“I think he is a better player than Real Sociedad. He is just not getting a game because of the way they are playing at Arsenal, it is nothing to do with his injury.
“I do not know what has happened with Newcastle because I thought he would have gone there. I think they might still come in, I would not be surprised if he ended up going to Newcastle.“

Is Kieran Tierney joining Newcastle?
Although the Scot could be another fantastic option for Howe at left-back, having been hailed as "sensational" by journalist Nizaar Kinsella, it seems very unlikely that Newcastle make a move for him in the final week of the transfer window.
Howe has made it clear that he is working under "tight constraints", as the club need to abide by Financial Fair Play rules, and he has already signed Hall, in what will eventually be a £35m deal, so the manager has no reason to bring in another left-back.
Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.
Arsenal have always insisted on a £30m fee for the 26-year-old, so he is likely to be unaffordable, with the Magpies already shelling out €153m (£131m) on transfer fees this summer, not including the £35m they will need to pay for Hall.
If the Chelsea loanee cements himself as a central midfielder, rather than a left-back, Newcastle could revisit a deal for Tierney in the future, but the former Celtic man may have already left Arsenal by that point, so it is now very unlikely he moves to St. James' Park.
