Newcastle Team News: £85k-p/w "Threat" A Doubt Vs Leicester

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton is expected to take a late fitness test ahead of the Premier League game vs Leicester City tonight, according to reports.

What's the latest injury news on Joelinton?

The Magpies secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion last week and will be hoping to replicate the three points when they host Dean Smith’s relegation-battling Foxes this evening, but they may have to do so without the services of the 26-year-old.

The Brazilian was substituted and replaced by Matt Targett in added time during the previous top-flight encounter and was spotted limping after the full-time whistle, and whilst Eddie Howe stated in his pre-match press conference that he held out “hope” that his regular would be available for selection, it turns out that might not be the case.

According to 90min, Joelinton is set to undergo a “late fitness test” to determine whether he’ll be fit for tonight’s fixture vs Leicester. The Magpies veteran’s injury is currently not thought to be “serious” enough to keep him sidelined, but nevertheless, he will still seek medical advice to properly get that question answered.

Joe Willock has also been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a hamstring problem, whilst Sean Longstaff and Jacob Murphy will once again be missing from the matchday squad.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton.

Would Joelinton's absence be a blow for Newcastle?

Newcastle will know how much of an important member of Howe’s squad Joelinton is having been named the 2021/22 Player of the Year, and considering the attacking midfielder’s level of performance this season, it would definitely be a blow for him to be ruled out tonight.

The St. James’ Park “threat”, as lauded by journalist Josh Bunting, has posted 11 goal contributions (eight goals and three assists) across all competitions this term and ranks in the 96th percentile for number of attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area, so is constantly looking to produce moments of quality in the final third.

As per FBRef, the £85k-per-week ace is also strong in the defensive aspect of his game having won 49 of his 70 tackles made since the start of the term with this success rate being higher than any other player in the northeast, further highlighting his individual importance.

Finally, Joelinton is a versatile operator with his ability to operate in seven various positions over the pitch, including everywhere across the frontline, so is a great option for the manager to have at his disposal, therefore, even the thought of him being on the sidelines will be a setback for Howe.

Herath hat-trick headlines 21-wicket day

The second day in Galle brought 21 wickets as Sri Lanka tightened their grip on the series. Rangana Herath claimed a hat-trick and Australia were bowled out for 106, their lowest ever total against Sri Lanka

The Report by Brydon Coverdale05-Aug-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe second day in Galle finished as it started: with Steven Smith at the crease facing Dilruwan Perera. Australia would take that result if it meant a captain’s innings, a double-century to drag his side back into the series. The reality was a world away from that, for in between Perera had taken five wickets and scored a half-century, Rangana Herath had claimed a hat-trick, 21 wickets had tumbled, and Australia had collapsed to their lowest ever Test total against Sri Lanka. This was the day on which Sri Lanka made certain that they would lift the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy for the first time. It was not yet struck in 1999, the only other occasion on which they beat Australia in a series. Indeed, that was the only other occasion on which they beat Australia in a Test. In the first 33 years of Test cricket between the two countries, Sri Lanka won just a single game. They will now do so twice in a fortnight.Australia were set 413 for victory, which would be the third-highest successful chase in Test history. Gettable, perhaps, for an in-form batting unit on a pitch to their liking, if everything fell their way. But this Australian outfit was demolished in the first innings for 106, on a turning surface against a quality spin attack. Australia have as much chance of winning this Test as they do of winning Olympic gold in baseball. And no, baseball is no longer on the Olympic roster.By stumps, Australia were already 25 for 3 in their chase. Joe Burns had driven a catch to cover off Herath in the first over. Nightwatchman Nathan Lyon had poked a catch to silly point off Perera. And next ball, Usman Khawaja had watched an arm ball from Perera crash into his stumps. Dazed and confused, Khawaja offered no shot. His dismissal was emblematic of the day: Australia had no clue whether each ball from a Sri Lanka spinner would turn or not.And so at the close of play, Smith walked off on 1, with David Warner on 22, and a Sri Lankan victory inside three days appeared all but certain. The afternoon consisted largely of Sri Lanka’s batsmen frustrating Australia, growing their lead and humiliating their visitors further. Herath and Perera, who tormented Australia with the ball at either end of the day, scored nearly as many runs between them as Australia did in the first innings. The story of this day was the first session, in which Australia lost eight wickets for 52 runs. The cricket felt like it was played in fast-forward and at times the action was so comical that the Benny Hill theme would have been appropriate. The pitch was turning, but it was far from a poor surface. But it was as if Australia’s batsmen had never seen spinners before. They simply wondered at this mysterious slow form of bowling.Sri Lanka’s spinners attacked the stumps and built persistent pressure. Herath turned some and skidded others on. So did Perera. Lakshan Sandakan didn’t, but that was only because all the work was done already. Such was the annihilation that he came on only to collect the final wicket, and finished with 1 for 0 from two deliveries.Resuming at 54 for 2, Australia failed to survive even 20 overs of the day’s play. Australia’s 106 was their lowest total ever against Sri Lanka, and their lowest total in Asia for nearly 12 years, since they were skittled on a Mumbai dustbowl for 93 back in 2004. Herath finished with 4 for 35 and Perera with 4 for 29.Khawaja fell in the third over of the day when he missed an arm ball from Perera and was bowled for 11 – at least he played at this one – and Smith departed next over when he played back and tried to cut a slider from Herath. He too was bowled. So much for the “play straight” mantra Australia had tried to instil on this tour. Then came Herath’s hat-trick: Adam Voges drove on the up to cover, Peter Nevill was trapped lbw by another slider, and Mitchell Starc completed the trio when he leaned forward and was hit on the pad first ball. Starc was given not out but Angelo Mathews asked for a review, out of nothing but hope. He was as surprised as anyone that the not-out decision was overturned.Only one other Sri Lankan had ever taken a Test hat-trick: Nuwan Zoysa, who achieved the feat against Zimbabwe in Harare in 1999-2000. Herath’s wickets left Australia at 80 for 7 and in serious danger of failing to reach triple figures. In fact, they still needed two runs to avoid the follow-on, which appeared by no means a certainty. They did scrape past that mark but soon Lyon was caught in close off Perera and Josh Hazlewood edged to slip off the same bowler. Mitchell Marsh, at the other end while so much carnage was unfolding around him, slammed a couple of sixes to push the score past 100, but was caught at long-off when he tried for another off Sandakan’s second ball.Sri Lanka lost three wickets of their own before lunch – 11 wickets fell in the session – but already their lead was healthy. Perhaps their only concern at the moment is the consistent failure of their openers, for again Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne failed to reach double figures. Karunaratne was the first of six wickets for Mitchell Starc, who deserves commendation for his hard work, gaining rewards through reverse swing, speed and persistence.Starc finished with match figures of 11 for 94, the finest by any Australian in Sri Lanka, and second only to Mohammad Asif for visiting fast bowlers in the country. Not since Geoff Dymock claimed 12 against India in Kanpur in 1979 had an Australian fast bowler been so successful in a Test match in Asia. But where Sri Lanka’s spinners were important, Australia’s were impotent. Out of desperation, Lyon resorted to bowling legbreaks as Sri Lanka’s innings wore on, and Jon Holland was treated with the disdain Sri Lanka’s batsmen might dish up to a bowler Holland. Eventually Australia bowled the Sri Lankans out for 237. The figure was almost irrelevant, though a complete Sri Lankan capitulation might almost have made a game of it.Instead, Kusal Perera contributed 35, Mathews scored a brisk 47, Dilruwan Perera compiled 64, Herath chipped in with 26, and Dhananjaya de Silva managed 34. It was enough to set Australia 400 plus. It was enough, after Australia’s morning collapse, to decide the series.

Beale Must Unleash £8.1k-p/w Rangers "Presence"

Glasgow Rangers will be looking at putting this season firmly in the rearview mirror, with nothing to play for over the final four matches of the Premiership campaign.

Michael Beale will be hoping to secure his first win over Celtic at the fifth attempt as the Old Firm rivals visit Ibrox this afternoon in what is a meaningless clash in terms of the title race.

There could well be a few changes from the routine win over Aberdeen last week, and with the summer transfer window looming on the horizon, Beale will aim to give some fringe players opportunities to either showcase their abilities with regard to a potential move away, or judge who actually wishes to remain at the club next season.

One player who deserves a start today is defender John Souttar, who could get redemption against Celtic following his poor performance and defensive lapse during the clash between the two giants in their last Premiership meeting.

Will John Souttar start for Rangers against Celtic?

Making just his second start of the season, Souttar played a horribly misjudged backpass to Allan McGregor in the April tie from which Jota nipped in and scored Celtic’s third goal to virtually secure victory.

It wasn’t the best performance; though he does deserve another crack at the champions in order to prove to Beale he could play a key part in his team during 2023/24, and he shouldn’t be solely judged on one mistake made while the centre-back was clearly rusty.

If Souttar can replicate the form he displayed at Hearts last season, the manager could have a wonderful defender on his hands.

Across 27 league matches, he averaged an impressive Sofascore rating of 7.3/10, winning an impressive 71% of his total duels while making 3.9 clearances and 1.2 interceptions per game – placing in the top two for each metric – clearly proving he was a rock at the heart of the Jam Tarts' defence.

John Souttar for Rangers

Indeed, the £8.1k-per-week Scot was dubbed a “presence” by his Light Blues teammate Ryan Jack recently, and if he manages to start in the last four games before the end of the term, he could put himself into Beale’s long-term thinking.

Although today's Old Firm clash will have no bearing on silverware, a solid performance could give the Englishman plenty of optimism heading into 2023/24 and a solid summer of transfer activity will allow the Gers to challenge for honours.

Players' association will empower women's cricket – Edulji

Former India Women captain Diana Edulji has said the creation of a players’ association – one of several recommendations of the Lodha committee that was approved by the Supreme Court in a watershed verdict – will empower women cricketers in the country. Edulji is a part of the four-member steering committee, led by former union home secretary GK Pillai, that has been tasked with the responsibility of setting up a players’ association.Edulji said women players now had an outlet to express their grievances and offer suggestions. “I don’t know about the men’s side, at least from the women’s side some of the players are scared to speak,” Edulji told ESPNcricinfo. “Maybe with me there, they can come to me, speak to me and I can put forward their views to the authorities and see how best they can be benefited.”Edulji felt a women’s representative of the players’ association in the Apex Council, which will replace the working committee, would ensure greater accountability. “People will be more answerable. That will also help because we need somebody to listen to us,” she said. “There is a women’s committee in the BCCI but most of them are not players. Women’s cricket needs a little push and I think this is the right time for it.”Edulji said the players’ association shouldn’t be viewed as an anti-establishment body, and that there was a more positive attitude towards women’s cricket with initiatives like the introduction of central contracts for players. “We don’t want to antagonise BCCI. We don’t want a confrontation, and we want to work together. It is just two parties working together, the players get a little voice in a proper way. [It is] not striking or union types,” she said.”The current lot – I have been with the MCA as well in the cricket advisory committee as well – is favourable towards improving women’s cricket. Even in BCCI, I have had a word with Anurag Thakur and they are quite positive.”Edulji, however, was unsure of when the steering committee was going to meet to discuss the formation of the association. “We haven’t officially got any information. We have to wait because only the day before [yesterday] have we got the verdict,” she said. “We haven’t even been sounded out [by the BCCI] yet.”

West Ham Must Pay £6m To Trigger Manager’s Release Clause

West Ham have been linked with a move to replace David Moyes with Marco Silva after a disappointing season.

The Hammers are just above the relegation zone and while they are likely to remain in the Premier League next season, the board may still choose to replace him.

Who could replace David Moyes as West Ham manager?

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham are now considering a move for Fulham manager Marco Silva after a very impressive season. The Cottagers have been defensively rugged and tactically astute under Silva.

The 45-year-old has a £6million release clause in his contract which West Ham will need to pay if they are to replace Moyes with Silva. The two managers are at opposite ends of their careers in coaching and signing Silva could be what the London outfit needs to move into another gear and create a long-term vision.

Moyes has been a fantastic manager for West Ham and if the board is planning on replacing him at the end of the season, winning the Europa Conference League would be that much sweeter.

Would Marco Silva be the right appointment for West Ham?

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor said he believes Silva is the right man for West Ham to hire.

He said: "I think bringing Silva in would be the right decision. David Moyes has been outstanding for the club, but I think it’s time to bring in a younger manager with new ideas.

"Silva has done brilliantly with Fulham and the way they play football, the authority he has – I think he’d be a great appointment for West Ham.

"It wouldn’t even be a sacking for Moyes. It’d be a thank you for your service – but the club has to move forward now. I think it will happen."

Hopefully leaving West Ham wouldn't spell the end of Moyes' career as a manager. Only Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have managed more games in the Premier League than the Scotsman. In total, he has taken charge of 647 games and counting.

West Ham have three Premier League games left as well as their semi-final second leg against AZ Alkmaar. Should they win that, they will have the final to contend with as well.

Dawson and Buttler drive England to thumping victory

The sun duly set on Sri Lanka’s tour of England, but the literal setting on a sunkissed day in Hampshire proved infinitely more impressive than the figurative version

The Report by Andrew Miller in Southampton05-Jul-2016England 144 for 2 (Buttler 73*, Morgan 47*) beat Sri Lanka 140 (Dawson 3-27, Jordan 3-29) by eight wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJos Buttler opened England’s innings and ended unbeaten on 73•Getty Images

The sun duly set on Sri Lanka’s tour of England, but the literal setting on a sunkissed day in Hampshire proved infinitely more impressive than the figurative version. As a packed house at the Ageas Bowl revelled in another show of force from an increasingly impressive England white-ball team, the visitors prepared to exit stage left – trampled underfoot at the end of a long and arduous tour from which the positives will only be visible if their talented young players can learn from the experience and turn it to their country’s advantage in the future. For today, however, it was all about England’s here and now. Liam Dawson pleased his Hampshire home fans by starring on debut with figures of 3 for 27 in four overs, before Jos Buttler – offered an unexpected opportunity to open the batting – eased England to a clean sweep of all three formats (and a resounding 20 points to four victory in the inaugural Super Series) with 73 not out from 49 balls, including three fours and four emphatic sixes.Morgan faces X-ray after dislocation

Eoin Morgan will undergo an X-ray on his left ring finger tomorrow after suffering a dislocation while taking a catch in the covers off Dinesh Chandimal.
“It bent right back, it was dislocated,” Morgan said. “I got it put back in and injected, so I can’t really feel it at the moment. I’ll have an X-ray on it tomorrow afternoon and see what it’s like.”
The incident did not hamper his batting in the short term, as he finished unbeaten on 47 from 39 balls, the most runs he has scored in his last 22 innings for England.
“It’s nice to get some runs,” he said. “I’ve struggled to string an innings together but everyone in the team has dovetailed around that, which has been awesome.
“As a captain you want to lead from the front and, when you’re not doing that, it can leave a bit to be desired. I enjoy scoring runs in a successful team.”

Victory was duly sealed by eight wickets and with 15 balls left unused, thanks to an unbroken third-wicket stand of 114 in 79 deliveries between Buttler and Eoin Morgan, who rose above the dislocation of his left ring finger while taking a catch in the covers to produce his best innings of the year to date, an unbeaten 47 from 39 balls which included a firm swipe for six over wide long-on to cue the fireworks and wrap up England’s first white-ball campaign of the summer.Dawson, who was an unused member of England’s World T20 squad, demonstrated his aptitude for the international stage by striking in each of his first three overs. In a composed and mature performance, he used his local knowledge to gauge the pace of the surface from the outset and cramp Sri Lanka’s ambitions as they sought in vain to accelerate through the middle overs. On his watch, they collapsed from 58 for 1 to 82 for 5, including a crass first-ball run-out for Dasun Shanaka, their ambitions of a defendable total over there and then.Dawson’s fellow England debutant, Tymal Mills, was no less impressive even though his maiden international wicket will have to wait for another day. In two bursts of two overs, at the front- and back-end of the innings, he returned figures of none for 22, conceding a solitary boundary in each spell as Sri Lanka struggled to align his fierce pace with a cunningly disguised slower ball.According to the speedgun, Mills’ fastest ball was also his first – a 92.5mph loosener on a good length outside off stump, and that line rarely strayed at any stage of his performance, allowing Morgan to trust him implicitly at either end of the innings. It is early days in an England career that could have been over before it had begun when Mills was diagnosed with a degenerative back condition two years ago, but the early impressions were exciting in the extreme. Then again, Sri Lanka’s batting was as haphazard as you might expect from a side that has been through the wringer in all formats during their two-month tour of England. Despite Angelo Mathews’ insistence, after winning the toss, that this contest was their opportunity to “end the tour on a high”, many of the dismissals suggested that the only height that mattered any more was the cruising altitude of tomorrow’s flight to Colombo.”That has been the case for us right throughout the summer, we didn’t get enough runs on the board,” Mathews admitted afterwards. “We knew it would be a tough challenge but we just had to compete and give ourselves the best chance to win. Unfortunately either batting, bowling or fielding has let us down in every single game…140 was a very average score.”On a pitch that had been shown, by England’s women during their hard-earned victory over Pakistan earlier in the afternoon, to be somewhat slower than might have been anticipated, Sri Lanka succumbed to a diet of half-formed mows and drives that they might have got away with, had the ball been coming onto the bat.Instead, as Mathews conceded, it was “stopping and turning” a bit off the surface, and, as a consequence, their attempts at acceleration took on, at first, an air of desperation and then, latterly, resignation. Chris Jordan, in particular, took command at the death, returning from a minor mauling in the Powerplay to claim three wickets for six runs in his final two overs of the innings.Liam Plunkett’s heavy artillery accounted for the dangerous duo of Kusal Perera and Seekkuge Prasanna before either could fully cut loose, while Adil Rashid’s wrist-spin was typically slippery and varied, and included a T20 collector’s item – the first maiden of his 20-over career. Ramith Rambukwella, an offspinning allrounder whose only previous match had come against New Zealand at Pallekele three years ago, was tormented as he attempted to swing his way through the square boundaries. Though he eventually connected in Rashid’s next over for one of only three sixes in the innings, he soon departed for 19 from 16 thanks to a direct hit at the non-striker’s end from James Vince at point. In reply, England’s innings stuttered at the outset as Jason Roy – flushed with understandable confidence after his recent glut of ODI runs – stepped across his stumps in Mathews’ first over to be bowled round his legs for a duck, before Vince made it 30 for 2 in the fifth over when he lost sight of a deflection off his pads and was stumped by Dinesh Chandimal as he strayed out of his crease in search of an non-existent bye.By that stage, however, Sri Lanka believed they ought to have had the big one. On 5, Buttler appeared to graze a thin nick through to Chandimal behind the stumps but the umpire was unmoved. Snicko soon revealed a large spike as the ball passed the edge, but with no DRS on offer for the T20 leg of the tour, Sri Lanka had no recourse.”Chandimal was pretty convinced he nicked it, but unfortunately it’s one of those things, it happens,” said Mathews afterwards. “T20 is a fast game and you want it to be fast. It was one of those days when you think you might need that one DRS. But it was human error once again and we couldn’t do anything about it.”The same could broadly be said of England’s run-chase, as Morgan appeared on schedule at No. 4, his finger numbed with painkillers and his timing and placement seemingly restored as a consequence. But it was Buttler’s brilliance that ripped the game away. His promotion may only be a temporary measure, with Alex Hales rested for this game, but such was the clarity of his strokeplay and the inevitability with which he swept England to the spoils, you have to wonder if it may prove to be a longer-term plan.”Certainly it’s something we would consider again,” said Morgan. “It’s about getting the best of this fellow, because you don’t know what his limits are – he’s that good. His potential is as good as anyone’s around the world. It’s up to himself, me, TB [Trevor Bayliss] and Farby [Paul Farbrace] to be as open and honest about where his best position is to bat. But watching him crunch it is pretty awesome.”Where the white-ball game is concerned, however, such thoughts can be shelved until September. For now, England’s attention turns back to Test cricket and the rapidly approaching Lord’s Test against Pakistan. For Sri Lanka, a long flight home awaits. It’s been a bruising visit.

Franklin leads way to peg back Essex

ScorecardToby Roland-Jones helped squeeze out Essex with 4 for 40•Getty Images

Middlesex maintained their interest in an unlikely treble with a dramatic victory against Essex in the Royal London Cup at Lord’s. Defending 219 for 8 they looked to be heading for defeat when Essex reached 100 for 1 in the 22nd over. However, with boundary-hitting increasingly difficult on a used pitch they squeezed the life from the visitors’ innings to win by four runs.Nick Browne launched the Essex innings with a flurry of fours on his way to 79 in 94 balls but his team-mates were unable to build on the platform. Toby Roland-Jones took 4 for 40 and James Franklin 3 for 25 as Essex, who would have booked a home quarter-final with a win, were restricted to 215 for 9.Middlesex, already in the quarter-finals of the NatWest T20 Blast and leading the Specsavers County Championship, now need to beat Surrey at Lord’s on Tuesday and hope other results go their way. Essex need a win at Gloucestershire the same day to secure their last-eight place.Middlesex’s 50-over captain Franklin* also top-scored with 55. The Kiwi nursed into recovery an innings which seemed fatally damaged by a spell of 3 for 3 in 11 balls by teenage allrounder Dan Lawrence. The 19-year-old finished with 3 for 35, his best return in any form of senior cricket.Despite missing Dawid Malan with a groin injury, Middlesex had begun brightly with Paul Stirling driving over extra cover for six to the shorter Tavern boundary but the introduction of spin, in the form of Lawrence and Ashar Zaidi, then Tom Westley, slowed progress.Between them the trio bowled 24 overs for 90 runs with Lawrence the pick. His trio of quick wickets reduced Middlesex from 87 for 1 to 97 for 4 with Test batsmen George Bailey and Robson among the victims. With Malan out and Eoin Morgan absent with a broken finger it was left to Franklin, with support from John Simpson (33), to rebuild.Middlesex’s total seemed seemed to be insufficient as Browne launched into the Middlesex attack hitting eight boundaries off the first six overs. However, as with Middlesex innings, scoring then slowed especially when Browne, having edged between keeper and slip on 55, then been dropped by Bailey on 69, ran out of luck to be bowled off an inside edge by Franklin. With boundaries drying up the required run rate crept up and wickets fell often enough to keep Middlesex interested. Prime amongst these was Ravi Bopara, who scored 34 off 60 balls without a boundary. That thrust the responsibility on Zaidi whose big-hitting won the T20 match between the teams earlier this week. He needed 11 of the last over, bowled by Franklin, but was leg before first ball.*August 1, 2016 – This was updated to correct the suggestion that Franklin was standing in for Malan as captain

Tottenham: Spurs Eye "Exciting" Manager Talks Alongside Slot

Tottenham Hotspur are actively seeking talks with Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim alongside Feyenoord's Arne Slot, according to journalist Miguel Delaney.

What's the latest Spurs manager news?

The north Londoners are stepping up their chase for a new permanent manager after Antonio Conte departed Spurs nearly two months ago, with chairman Daniel Levy reportedly completing the due-diligence stage.

Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, who was a popular choice among supporters, has been surprisingly ruled out of the running with Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso confirming his intention to stay in Germany.

Spurs' list of candidates is becoming narrower and narrower as a result, and reports suggest that the likes of Slot, Amorim and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi are among the chief candidates.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is also reliably believed to be on Tottenham's list, with journalist Delaney, writing for The Independent, now sharing an update on their pursuit of Amorim.

The Sporting boss, who was won trophies galore across stints with his current club and SC Braga in Portugal, is a prime target for Spurs alongside Slot.

The latter coach, who is viewed as the top target after initial discussions among hierarchy, appears to be a priority but Amorim remains firmly in Tottenham's thinking.

Delaney claims Spurs are "also seeking to speak" with the 38-year-old, who already has a close relationship with Lilywhites defender Pedro Porro, alongside other candidates.

This comes after Levy has been leading the first stage of interviews in the last few weeks, and while Slot appears to be the favourite as things stand, Amorim is firmly in the running as well.

Who is Ruben Amorim?

Back in 2021, the Portuguese guided Sporting to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years, ending their long, long wait to be crowned champions.

Amorim's stock is growing and growing, with Man City boss Pep Guardiola recently calling him "one of the best" around at this moment in time.

Reporter Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic also branded him "the most exciting young manager in European football", making his potential appointment seem fairly promising.

Amorim deploys the 3-4-3 formation, too, meaning players accustomed to Conte's old system shouldn't have to undergo too much of a transition period tactically.

Still very young, the coach certainly fits Tottenham's mould of a young, hungry manager akin to 2014 Mauricio Pochettino – with that rumoured to be Levy's criteria as they continue their search.
