Karnataka strong after conceding lead

Karnataka, after conceding a 66-run lead to Delhi due to Parwinder Awana’s half-century, came back strongly into the contest via a 136-run stand by their openers

Kanishkaa Balachandran at the Chinnaswamy Stadium09-Dec-2012ScorecardFortunes oscillated on the second day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, but Karnataka made amends after a poor opening day with a strong opening partnership between Robin Uthappa and KL Rahul. The duo not only erased the first-innings deficit of 66 but extended the lead to 70, undefeated. Karnataka held the upper hand by taking quick wickets in the morning session, but that initiative slipped when Parvinder Awana, fresh from a five-wicket haul the previous day, made an attacking fifty to give Delhi the lead. Karnataka then came back strongly by their openers. The talking point, though, was Awana’s elevation to India’s Test and T20 squads. News of his selection broke after lunch, when Delhi had taken the lead. By then, Awana had gained enough confidence to take the bowling apart, with all the specialist batsmen dismissed. His character was tested after he walked in with Delhi struggling at 144 for 7, still 48 adrift of Karnataka’s score. Delhi had just lost two wickets in two balls. Puneet Bisht went forward to drive a full delivery from HS Sharath and edged to the keeper, before Rajat Bhatia provided KL Rahul with a simple catch at second slip. The initial target of 192 seemed a long way off.Awana and Sumit Narwal kept the bowlers at bay with a steady partnership. Karnataka went on the defensive, pushing mid-off and mid-on back to the spinner KP Appanna. As Awana looked to play aggressively, the Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar had as many as four men in the deep while he was bowling. Delhi inched towards the lead and ended the opening session trailing by 15.After lunch, Awana batted in a different gear, biffing boundaries towards midwicket and slashing over point to take Delhi closer to the lead, which they achieved with a boundary over extra cover by Narwal. Appanna then nipped out two wickets in an over, leaving Awana with the No.11 for company. Karnataka struggled to remove the last-wicket pair. Fielders were placed in the deep but Awana still found the gaps, pulling and slashing when given width. He brought up his fifty off as many balls with a hoick towards midwicket, and was dismissed on 74 when he gloved Vinay to the keeper. It was an effective comeback by Delhi after their earlier struggle. They took the approach of batting positively, but like Karnataka, the top order was guilty of giving it away before getting settled.Shikhar Dhawan was foxed by extra bounce from Vinay, and he gloved to the keeper; Mithun Manhas looked dangerous with some crisp cover drives before he chased a full, away-swinging delivery off his namesake Abhimanyu Mithun and got an outside edge to the keeper. Vaibhav Rawal, playing his third first-class game, looked in good touch but was lucky to be dropped on 12 when Manish Pandey was slow to react at second slip. The let-off was a bit expensive as Rawal added 50 in quick time with Bhatia and went on to score 48. Rawal was strong off the front foot, punching past cover and driving down the ground when the seamers overpitched. Sharath, the most penetrative bowler of the morning, got rid of him when he slanted one across the left-hander and induced an edge. Rawal failed to carry on after making a start, but Awana gave Delhi control.Karnataka, in reply, had lost a wicket in the first over but the pair of Uthappa and Rahul ensured they went into the team break without having lost another wicket. Uthappa got the innings off to a positive start by angling the first ball of the innings wide of slip. The batsmen appeared to get a good measure of the second-day pitch, and waited patiently for the bad balls. Delhi maintained attacking fields but the tactic didn’t work as the pair found the gaps with ease. Uthappa was strong driving down the ground while Rahul too settled into a good rhythm, getting to his fifty with a controlled glide over the slips.Delhi had their chances of dismissing both of them, but fluffed it. Awana was the bowler on both occasions. Rahul was dropped on 44 by the keeper Bisht while Uthappa was let off on 64 by Rawal at third slip. Uthappa offered other chances too. Having endured a tough evening, Delhi will need to make the morning count on Monday, given that the first session has proven to be the most productive for the bowlers.

Clarke digests first series loss

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke is digesting the first series defeat of his reign, and its nature cannot go down easily

Daniel Brettig at Old Trafford10-Jul-2012Australia’s captain Michael Clarke is digesting the first series defeat of his reign, and its nature cannot go down easily. Clarke’s team was kicked around Old Trafford as England completed a 4-0 victory, the heaviest defeat of an Australian ODI side in any bilateral series in the 41-year history of limited overs internationals. The tourists were given still more reason to recall the tour unhappily by a hamstring injury to David Hussey, preventing him from fielding in the seven-wicket defeat. Clarke said the series reflected a wider problem in the team’s limited-overs cricket over the period of his captaincy, given that it had been preceded by battling series victories over Sri Lanka and South Africa away, before a triangular series win at home and a tied encounter in the Caribbean. However he would not countenance the result as a “wake-up call” to the national side generally, given how strongly the Test team’s results had improved over Clarke’s tenure. “It’s a completely different team, completely different format so I don’t want to compare the Test team with the one-day team,” Clarke said. “It’s a reminder, not a wake-up call. We knew through the Australian summer we weren’t playing anywhere near as good a cricket as we needed to be against Sri Lanka and India.”We went to the West Indies and just got over the line there so it’s not like this is the first series where we haven’t played as well as we’d like. Our one-day cricket hasn’t been as consistent as it needs to be if we want to stay at the top of the table. Hence how close the first, second, third and fourth are on the rankings points now. We’ve got a lot of work to do as a one-day team.”The ODI side has been used as a way of providing opportunities for numerous players to press their claims for other formats. Some like George Bailey have shown tentative progress, but others like Peter Forrest and Steve Smith are now struggling to justify their selection, developmental or otherwise.”It’s certainly not about opportunity. We’re giving plenty of guys the opportunity to grab it with both hands,” Clarke said. “There’s a few players that haven’t experienced these conditions so that was a good taste of it. Against good opposition in international sport you’ve just got to find a way to win, whether it’s with the bat, with the ball in the field. Good teams do that, they’ll be down or they’ll lose the first match of the series, but they’ll find a way to turn it around, and we haven’t been good enough to do that so that’s an area we have to improve.”We need to play better cricket. We need to sit down as a team and have a look at our performances over the last 12 months and areas we need to get better. It certainly wasn’t preparation. I thought our training was outstanding and we played some really good cricket in the couple of warm-up games but we have no excuses.”I think a lot of credit needs to go to England as well. They’ve outplayed us in all four matches, they’ve been very consistent, their bowlers have bowled with good patience and discipline and their batters have made runs. We haven’t done both. We didn’t have anybody make a big score as a batter, we lost a lot of early wickets throughout the series and we didn’t execute our skills as well as you need to.”

Kevin Pietersen transfers to Delhi Daredevils

England batsman Kevin Pietersen has transferred to Delhi Daredevils from Deccan Chargers for the 2012 season of the IPL, the IPL has confirmed

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jan-2012England batsman Kevin Pietersen has transferred to Delhi Daredevils from Deccan Chargers for the 2012 season of the IPL, the IPL has confirmed. Pietersen is the third player to switch teams during the transfer window, after Dinesh Karthik and R Sathish.”We are pleased to add Kevin to our line-up. He brings rich experience and an explosive quality to our batting and can be a more than handy offspinner as well,” said TA Sekhar, GMR Sports’ Head (Cricket). “We are sure that Kevin will help us to be very competitive this season and the Delhi Daredevils fans will enjoy this addition.”Pietersen was earlier part of Royal Challengers Bangalore and had captained the team for a few games in 2009. He was acquired by Deccan Chargers during the 2011 player auctions but could not play as he was recovering from a double hernia.Pietersen, currently in the UAE for England’s away series against Pakistan, said he was looking forward to the challenge of being part of a new setup. “I am looking forward to a wonderful time with the Delhi Daredevils,” Pietersen said. “It will be a great experience to be playing in the same squad as Sehwag.”The first window for trading between IPL franchises closes on January 20. There will be another short window for trading after the February 4 auction in which the players of now terminated franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala will be sold. The tournament will run from April 4 to May 27, 2012.

Bold McDonald chances his arm

The allrounder Andrew McDonald hopes his new aggressive approach to batting will catch the attention of Australia’s revamped selection panel this summer

The allrounder Andrew McDonald hopes his new aggressive approach to batting will catch the attention of Australia’s revamped selection panel this summer. McDonald has just returned home from England, where he was voted the player of the tournament in the county Twenty20 competition after topping the run tally and playing a key role in Leicestershire’s title victory. It was a fine way to finish an off-season in which he lost his Cricket Australia contract, one of the lower-profile casualties on the same day that Simon Katich was controversially sacked. But while Katich is unlikely to play for Australia again, McDonald, 30, has not given up hope of resuming his international career, and he believes other fringe players will also be encouraged by the upcoming overhaul of the selection panel.”Now that the Argus review has come out and the panel of selectors is going to change, and there’s a new captain, a few of the views that in the past people had of you might change,” McDonald told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s an exciting time – you can probably start fresh again. That’s exciting, the fact that they’re going to open it up.”I think it was bandied around last year that if you were over 30 you were pretty much finished but that’s probably going to not be the case this year, so it’s opened up for everyone again. A new selection panel, fresh ideas – you never know what direction they’re going to head. It’s definitely a good time to be involved in Australian cricket. There’s going to be lots of opportunities.”And over the past year McDonald might have done enough to encourage the new selectors, whoever they should be, that he still has an international future, in the shorter formats if not Tests. When McDonald played his four Tests in early 2009 it was as a bowling allrounder, a role he performed well, but as a batsman he looked unadventurous and didn’t make the most of his international opportunities. That was a perception McDonald wanted to change, and his T20 heroics for Leicestershire followed a home summer in which he made three Sheffield Shield centuries and averaged 76.33 at a strike-rate of nearly 85. It was quite a statement from a man who had spent a decade with a strike-rate in the mid-50s, and only injury prevented McDonald from enjoying a 1000-run season with his new attacking method.”It definitely was a conscious thing,” he said. “I think I was pigeonholed as, maybe not a dour batsman but someone who couldn’t strike up there with the best of them. But I always knew that I could do that. It’s probably been dictated by the role I’ve had in the middle order for Victoria, I’ve played that complementing role to the attacking likes of Dave Hussey and Brad Hodge and Aaron Finch.”Last year I took it upon myself to change that perception in a bid to make my runs in a different way, to get some sort of notice from up at the next level. As it was, I missed out on Australia A selection, but I think I’ll still stick to that formula. With the medium-pace bowling I think [the selectors] see that I can’t hold down a position bowling at 120kph, so my batting had to stand up at some stage and take over. It probably has over the last 12 months.”His batting has become so dangerous that he spent much of the Friends Life t20 opening for Leicestershire, and made 584 runs at 53.09, enough for him to be voted the MVP by the Professional Cricketers’ Association. McDonald enjoyed the challenge of opening, having spent most of his career in the lower middle-order for Victoria.”It’s definitely something that I’ve always wanted to do, to open the batting,” he said. “It was a different role but it actually excited me after playing ten years in the middle order. Something different was the sort of stimulus I probably needed in the shorter formats to reinvigorate my form in that game.”You get to face the best bowlers, the ball comes on to the bat. The pace on the ball is something I probably like. Two men are out and you have to chance your arm a bit, whereas in the middle your role is dictated by what’s happened before you, so your role is ever-changing. But at 0 for 0 you get your own blank canvas and you can stamp yourself on the game in whatever way you want.”Now all McDonald needs is a big home summer for Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades. Australia’s new selectors will be watching him with interest.

Bangalore finish on top of table

Chris Gayle indulged himself after his bowlers restricted Chennai Super Kings to a below-par 128 to ensure Royal Challengers Bangalore will finish top of the points table

Chris Gayle indulged himself after his bowlers restricted Chennai Super Kings to a below-par 128 to ensure Royal Challengers Bangalore will finish top of the points table. The result also secured their berth in this year’s Champions League.Chennai were always facing inevitable defeat once their top order crumbled six overs into the game. Tottering at 22 for 4, MS Dhoni consolidated initially before looting quick runs in the end, but 128 wasn’t going to test Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Especially with Gayle unleashing hell.Gayle left his mark on the chase and it was violent. A six flew over third man, another disappeared over cow corner, a third, off Suresh Raina, landed in the upper tier of the long-on stands and a fierce straight drive rammed into Albie Morkel’s shin. A limping Morkel continued bowling after receiving some treatment but Gayle promptly dispatched a short delivery over the deep midwicket boundary. But while Gayle thrilled the home crowd, it was the bowlers who won the game for Bangalore. The first couple of overs set the tone: Zaheer Khan nearly yorked M Vijay and beat Michael Hussey with couple of outswingers, and S Aravind hit a nagging line and length to handcuff Chennai. The breakthrough came in the third over when Hussey dragged an away-going delivery on to his stumps. It was a sign of things to come. Vijay hung his bat out against Aravind, Suresh Raina top edged a pull off Zaheer and when S Badrinath lifted Daniel Vettori to long-off Chennai were wobbling at 22 for 4 from 5.4 overs. It was left to Dhoni to play the lone ranger but every time he tried to switch to attacking mode, a wicket fell, forcing him to revert to caution. He added 26 runs with Wriddhiman Saha from 6.4 overs and Chennai reached 60 for 4 in 12 overs. Saha swung Gayle for a six over midwicket in the next over to suggest a possible change in the mindset but he fell, trying to repeat the shot off Virat Kohli in the 14th over.Dhoni was on a run-a-ball 19 at that stage and soon swung Gayle for his second six to hint at a revival, but Dwayne Bravo was trapped by an arm-ball from Vettori, forcing Dhoni to slow down again. He went quiet for a couple of overs and it was only in the final over, bowled by Abhimanyu Mithun, that Dhoni really displayed his brand of violence. He pulled a six and a four before he smote one over the midwicket boundary to finish off in style. It was far from enough though.

Team-mates back Ponting on captaincy

Ricky Ponting’s team-mates have leapt to his defence amid reports he could be stripped of the captaincy ahead of next month’s one-day series in Bangladesh

Brydon Coverdale in Ahmedabad22-Mar-2011Ricky Ponting’s team-mates have leapt to his defence amid reports he could be stripped of the captaincy ahead of next month’s one-day series in Bangladesh. The on Tuesday claimed that Cricket Australia would discuss Ponting’s future as leader of the side, even if the selectors named him captain for the Bangladesh series. The paper quoted an unnamed Cricket Australia official as saying that the time was approaching to look to the future, and that “we’re waiting for the next thing to blow up”. Over the past month, Ponting has created headlines for damaging a TV set in the dressing room, showing his anger at Steven Smith when they collided while going for a catch and for not walking when he got a thick edge to the wicketkeeper against Pakistan.Perhaps more importantly, Ponting has also been struggling for runs and Australia need him to fire during their quarter-final against India in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Michael Hussey said the team was right behind the captain, and that Ponting had not been any different in his approach over the past few weeks.”Ricky’s got our 100% support,” Hussey said. “He’s such a class player. It’s amazing, it seems like he’s been copping criticism over very minor things. Things have been blown way out of proportion from our point of view.”I’ve been watching Ricky in the nets and the way he has been preparing. It’s just amazing sometimes how champions just rise to the occasion at the right time. Against India on Thursday in the World Cup is one of those times where I think we’ll see the best of Ricky Ponting.”Ponting is searching for his fourth World Cup title and although he has signalled his intentions to play on in the limited-overs format, at 36 his long-term future in the one-day game must be in doubt. Mitchell Johnson said Ponting had retained his focus ahead of the India clash, in which a loss would mean the end of Australia’s 12-year hold on the World Cup.”He’s a very important player in this tournament. He’s been in a few World Cups now, so to have his experience is vital for us and he’s a guy we all look up to,” Johnson said. “He’s copped a fair bit [of criticism] lately and he’s dealing with it in his own way.”He has got the experience needed to be able to deal with it. I don’t think he’s thinking about it too much, he’s just worried about this next game. The guys are there to support him, everyone needs support at times and he is getting it from everyone. He is a tough character but he enjoys that support.”Ponting hasn’t made an international hundred in 13 months, and his best score at this World Cup has been 36 – against Kenya in Bangalore last week. He has given no signal that he intends to retire in the near future, and last week said that he would be playing in the Bangladesh series, which begins on April 9.

Karnataka file official complaint over pitch

Karnataka have filed an official complaint with match referee Manu Nayar against the Reliance Stadium pitch for their Ranji semi-final against Baroda

Abhishek Purohit06-Jan-2011Karnataka have filed an official complaint with match referee Manu Nayar against the Reliance Stadium pitch in Vadodara on which their Ranji Trophy semi-final against Baroda ended inside two days in a seven-wicket win for the hosts. Nayar confirmed the development to ESPNcricinfo. “As is normal procedure, I have forwarded the complaint to the BCCI along with my match report. The matter is with the board now.”The dry pitch took vicious turn throughout the game, which saw 33 wickets falling before tea on the second day, 23 of them to the spinners. Karnataka caved in for 107 and 88 to lose while Baroda managed 153 in their first innings, largely due to captain Pinal Shah (83) who was the lone half-centurion in the game.Javagal Srinath, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) secretary, said that they were contemplating whether to lodge a separate protest with the BCCI on the issue. “As of now, the players have filed an official complaint letter to the match referee. We at the KSCA can only take a call once we speak to the players and coach,” Srinath told . “We will speak to them and then only decide our course of action.”The Karnataka players were unhappy with the nature of the wicket, and Robin Uthappa even said that it was unfit to play a semi-final on. A source from the Baroda camp, however, told ESPNcricinfo that there was not much reason for Karnataka to complain. “They won the toss, they opted to bat, and if they caved in for 107, I cannot see how it is anyone else’s problem but theirs. The wicket was the same for both the sides. And if it was such a spinners’ paradise, how was a fast bowler (Baroda’s Murtuja Vahora) able to take five wickets in the first innings?”
