Everton must sell flop Josh Bowler

Marcel Brands faces a huge battle to sell Josh Bowler during the January transfer window with the forgotten Everton flop looking to secure a permanent exit this month.

What’s the word?

According to the Liverpool Echo, Bowler is keen to sever his ties with the Goodison Park natives during the mid-season market, rather than wait until the summer when he would become a free agent.

The winger is in the final six-months of his £3,000-per-week contract but has failed to break through into Carlo Ancelotti’s first-team squad after a season on loan with Hull City, while hip surgery in October has kept the 21-year-old sidelined.

Bowler, who won the Premier League 2 title under David Unsworth in 2018/19, is believed to be nearing a return to fitness and hopes to feature against Liverpool later this month when Everton’s Under 23s host their inner-city rivals.

He had scored twice in three PL2 appearances before going under the knife to take his U23s tally to five goals and one assist in 38 appearances, after netting once and creating a goal in 31 outings with the Tigers across all competitions last term.

Hull held a £5m option to purchase Bowler at the end of his temporary spell at the KCOM Stadium but chose against activating the clause following their relegation to League One.

Time to go

Brands must do all he can to facilitate a permanent exit for Bowler in the January transfer window and grant the forgotten 21-year-old his wish, as there is little expectation of the forward suddenly emerging in Ancelotti’s plans and earning his senior Everton debut.

The Toffees agreed a deal worth £1.5m rising to £4.25m with Queens Park Rangers to sign Bowler in 2017 but the decision has not paid off, even though Unsworth once lauded the Chertsey-born forward as being capable of producing magic.

“Josh Bowler was terrific. We need to get the ball to his feet in the final third and that’s where you see his magic,” he told Everton’s club website, via The Boot Room, following a 2-1 win over Sheffield United in February 2019.

Bowler was highly-rated when signed by Everton but often failed to produce any magic for Hull last term, with the forward offering just 0.2 key passes and 0.5 shots a game, making 0.9 successful dribbles and delivering just 0.1 accurate crosses, per SofaScore.

It was no wonder the Tigers passed up on paying big for the youngster following their relegation, which would have solved Everton’s problems well before Brands was left with a huge battle to find a potential suitor and avoid Bowler proving a total financial loss.

West Ham must sign Vincent Aboubakar

David Sullivan can deliver David Moyes and West Ham United a physical goal threat by signing rumoured January target Besiktas striker Vincent Aboubakar.

What’s the word?

According to ExWHUemployee, Moyes is keen to bring Aboubakar to the Premier League after West Ham opted to sell Sebastien Haller to AFC Ajax last Friday.

The Ivory Coast international’s departure left Michail Antonio as the only recognised senior striker at the London Stadium, and sparked rumours of interest in a host of names now said to include Aboubakar plus Troy Deeney and Graziano Pelle.

Moyes is claimed to have admired Aboubakar for a while and sees his near-expiring Besiktas contract as a route to bring the Cameroon international, who has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 13 appearances this season, to the Premier League.

Aboubakar had wanted to join the Hammers back in 2017 before joining FC Porto, whom he departed last summer as a free agent and penned a one-year deal with Besiktas that features an option to extend based on his performances over the 2020/21 campaign.

His efforts at Vodafone Park as the third-top scorer in the Super Lig have helped Sergen Yalcin’s side top of the table after 17 games, despite a belief he joined the club out of shape and with no trace of his former self.

Forget Antonio

Aboubakar has overcome his initial issues readjusting to life in Turkey to become one of the division’s top strikers again, and would bring a physical goal threat with him if West Ham do decide to target the £6.5m-rated brute in search of a replacement for Haller.

Aboubakar’s time with Porto took a sour turn over the past few years with the 2018/19 season heavily disrupted by a cruciate ligament rupture, before last term was met with just 10 outings across all competitions allowing for the speculation on his fitness to build.

But his only absences this term have come through tactical decisions and the loss of his mother last month, after which he returned to strike the opener in a 2-2 draw with Hatayspor.

His resilience and goal threat would be enough to rival Antonio at the London Stadium if targeted, and offer Moyes a physical attacker who knows where the goal is at a time the Hammers have only scored twice or more in a game in three of their last 13 fixtures across all competitions.

Antonio looked a shadow of himself on Monday night, too, as he continued his return from a hamstring injury, with a full 90 minutes under his belt the best that could be said for the 30-year-old’s appearance, having often failed to get a shot off at Stockport County.

Tottenham Hotspur: Four players injured %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%

According to an update by journalist Alasdair Gold, Jose Mourinho has ‘confirmed’ Sergio Reguilon, Harry Kane, Carlos Vinicius and Erik Lamela are all injured ahead of the clashes with LASK and Arsenal.Â

Writing on Twitter, Gold relayed Jose Mourinho’s news after Toby Alderweireld’s return – with the journalist going on to say that the Belgian is back after recovering from a muscular problem.

Mourinho confirms four players missing through injury

Alderweireld picked up this knock against Man City a fortnight ago, missing both Spurs’ matches against Ludogorets and Chelsea last week, but news of the centre-back’s return could definitely excite Lilywhites with the north London derby so close.

Spurs had to utilise summer signing Joe Rodon at the weekend in place of the colossus, with the Welshman enjoying a solid debut against Frank Lampard’s side but admitting it was difficult.

However, coming after the Alderweireld boost, Mourinho has now confirmed Reguilon, Kane, Lamela and Vinicius are all out injured ahead of Tottenham’s tie with LASK.

Transfer Tavern take

Whether or not they’ll be available for Arsenal remains to be seen, but it appears LASK on Thursday evening will definitely come too soon.

Indeed, having Alderweireld back from an originally worrying injury was a boost, but Mourinho could now be without four first team players for LASK.

It will be a long and drawn out Premier League campaign, with resting players key to avoiding serious trouble.

West Ham star Declan Rice validates Gareth Southgate’s praise vs Man City

West Ham United star Declan Rice stood out as the midfield enforcer of David Moyes’ plans on Saturday as the east London outfit held Manchester City to a one-all draw.

Michail Antonio opened the scoring at the London Stadium in spectacular fashion by turning the ball home in the 18th-minute with fantastic technique, but saw his effort cancelled out by a 51st-minute strike from Phil Foden which salvaged a point for Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues.

Moyes trusted Rice to once more begin affairs in the engine room of his starting line-up, marking the 11-cap England international’s 25th straight Premier League appearance since the Scottish coach returned to the Irons.

Rice again wore the captain’s armband, too, with Mr West Ham Mark Noble only named among the substitutes, and delivered a performance worthy of the honour as the 21-year-old demonstrated why he was valued at £80million this summer.

Rice’s development at the London Stadium saw Chelsea court his services throughout the recently-concluded market but they refused to match West Ham’s rumoured asking price, which has left the Irons considering awarding the midfielder a £120,000-per-week contract.

England boss Gareth Southgate has similarly been impressed with the midfielder’s progress, noting during the October internationals via quotes by the official West Ham website: “We are delighted, pleased with how he is developing.

“We have leaders who are older players, but he is a younger one. He is a good professional, wants to learn, wants to work for the team, digs in for the team, is getting more vocal on the pitch. He has the respect of the rest of the group.

“He has huge potential and the reason he has that potential is because he has a great mentality and desire to keep improving. He has other good examples among the senior players here. He knows the ones to follow and that is a good start.”

Rice’s ‘great mentality’ that Southgate lauds was on full display against Manchester City this weekend, as he displayed what is becoming a customary performance from the 21-year-old.

The midfielder offered a near-Man of the Match worthy 7.6 out of 10 performance on Saturday, per SofaScore, with only Citizens left-back Joao Cancelo (7.9) delivering a display that warranted a higher score.

Rice achieved his mark by winning six of his seven total duels – only losing one of two aerial contests – and never misplacing a pass, having found teammates with each of his 28 efforts including all four long balls.

One of the youngster’s forward passes was also deemed key and Rice beat his marker with each of his two attempted dribbles, while aiding defensively with four interceptions, three tackles, one clearance and not committing any fouls in a complete display.

AND in other news, David Moyes must hit the reset button as £27.2m target puts West Ham’s interest in the past.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has ready-made Ryan Bertrand replacement in Jake Vokins

In Southampton’s most recent game in the Premier League, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl opted to play centre-back, Jack Stephens, out of position as a left-back due to the recent injury suffered by Ryan Bertrand.

Although his decision seemed to pay off, as the Saints recorded a 2-0 win against Newcastle United that briefly took them to the top of the Premier League table, we feel that the Austrian cannot keep playing the former Swindon Town loanee out of position until Bertrand returns from injury.

The left-back picked up a knock in the recent win against Aston Villa, with Hasenhuttl confirming that the former Chelsea man had a hamstring problem following the game.

With fellow left-back Sam McQueen still recovering from his cruciate ligament injury, the Saints now have just Jake Vokins available as a natural in that position in their squad.

The 20-year-old is somewhat inexperienced, having made just three senior appearances for the South Coast club in his career thus far, although he was able to score in one of those appearances (per Transfermarkt).

However, he has made a lot of appearances for the academy sides at Southampton and the Saints must trust him to feature in the Premier League at some point, so why not now when they are overachieving and low on left-back options? As it could be argued that due to these circumstances, there is slightly less pressure on the 20-year-old’s shoulders.

The youngster signed a new four-year contract at the club in August, suggesting that they certainly have high hopes for his future, with Hasenhuttl suggesting at the time that:

“This is more good news for the future of this team, as these young players are important for our philosophy.

“Jake has developed well this season and made some big steps forward. He has good qualities, which he has shown in matches and also in his training with us. He is calm on the ball but also brave, and I like this attribute in my players.

“He must keep working hard on his game, and we will be sure to do this with him. There are many areas that he can improve in further, so this is a good opportunity for him to make the most of his potential.” (per Southampton FC).

Therefore, the Austrian manager clearly rates Vokins and with the busy Christmas schedule quickly approaching, it is time that the Austrian trusts the left-back to be a starter in his Premier League side, rather than playing Stephens out of position whilst he waits for Bertrand to recover from his hamstring injury.

West Ham on verge of costly blunder with Nikola Maksimovic move

West Ham United are bordering on desperation as they enter the final five days of the transfer window and latest reports could spell trouble for GSB…

What’s the word?

According to Sky Italia (via the Daily Mail), the Irons have submitted an offer to Napoli for their centre-back Nikola Maksimovic with the 28-year-old reportedly top of David Moyes’ shortlist.

It’s claimed that the Serie A outfit are looking for between £14m and £19m for the Sebian international whose contract is set to expire in less than 12 months time.

Premier League newcomers Fulham are said to be keen whilst Everton were mooted with interest earlier in the transfer window.

Costly error?

The Hammers haven’t had much luck with centre-backs over the past few years, since the departures of James Collins and James Tomkins, no one has truly stepped up.

Winston Reid is always injured, Angelo Ogbonna is inconsistent and Issa Diop isn’t trusted by some supporters.

But would Maksimovic be a solid addition? Well, the 6 foot 4 colossus is currently third choice in Naples and only started 21 matches last term where he averaged just 1.8 aerial duels won and 1.5 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

Given his nationality, imposing frame and aggressiveness (1.1 fouls per match), the 28-year-old has been likened to former United monster Nemanja Vidic who was the long-term partner of Rio Ferdinand for years.

Fabian Balbuena has just made a claim to be a starting centre-back after recording a whopping five tackles against Wolves whilst Ogbonna is averaging 1.7 per game, which is more than Maksimovic, so perhaps he wouldn’t be much of an improvement at all.

GSB would be playing a risky game to splash £14m plus wages in excess of the £36k-per-week he’s earning in Italy on a player that’s hugely untested outside of the Serie A.

Something they can’t afford to do after the uproar over selling young sensation Grady Diangana.

Spurs can upgrade Lamela with "fantastic" £13.5m target

Tottenham Hotspur have plenty of areas to bolster during the summer transfer window and although the wing position isn’t one of those, Jose Mourinho should absolutely look to upgrade it if latest reports are to be believed.

What’s the word?

According to Fussball Transfers, Inter Milan attacker Ivan Perisic is a wanted man in England with the likes of Everton and Manchester United joining Spurs in their interest.

The Croatian veteran has been on loan at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich this campaign, but they are unlikely to trigger his permanent option whilst his future back at the Serie A outfit isn’t certain either.

Perisic has two years to run on his current deal and could cost Spurs around €15m (£13.5m) if they wish to clinch him this summer.

Lamela upgrade?

The 31-year-old played a bit-part role for the German giants yet still managed to provide six goals and ten assists in all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

It is true that Mourinho has a wealth of options out wide, but they are largely on the right-hand side rather than the left which is often Heung-min Son’s spot to lose.

And surely he can’t refuse a player that’s been on his radar for quite some time. Back in 2018, whilst still at United, the Portuguese boss lauded Perisic as “different” because he’s “very physical” and is “fantastic in the air” (Russia Today via TEAMtalk).

This is something that he doesn’t really possess in any of his wingers. There’s also a good chance that Erik Lamela is sold to garner some funds. Football Insider suggested earlier in the year that Spurs would be willing to listen to offers for the Argentine.

The 28-year-old wins a measly 0.2 aerial duels per game and is dispossessed an average of 1.6 times per appearance too, via WhoScored, which suggests he’s lacking something that Perisic could bring to Mourinho’s squad.

Even though he’s getting on a bit, he’d be an interesting outlet and one that could even provide back-up to Harry Kane in the attack. If Spurs’ reported chase of Willian is true, then they would be foolish not to try and sign Perisic instead.
