Edouard may provide Celtic with further financial boost

Despite signing 12 new first-team players in the transfer window, Celtic’s financial future looks incredibly well set right now.

The Hoops were sensible with their summer acquisitions and did so after receiving some hefty sums for star men Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard.

What’s the word?

Ajer was the first to depart Parkhead a few months ago as the Norwegian centre-half joined newly-promoted Premier League side Brentford.

The transfer fee for him was £17.5m but fresh information claims that Edouard may actually rake in more cash for the Hoops.

At one stage, it looked as though the Frenchman was going to be priced out of a move due to his wage demands but Crystal Palace lodged a late attempt to sign him.

An upfront fee of £14m was gathered but according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, that number could improve significantly.

Speaking on The Celtic Exchange podcast, he commented: “In terms of Edouard, Celtic wanted clauses that were achievable.

“And we understand them to be rising up to £18.5m, and any money now that comes in from the additional clauses will be going directly to Celtic that is not part of the initial fee, which was in the clause with Celtic and PSG.

“It was 40% of the profit from the transfer fee only. And that is from the £14m fee. So anything more that comes in from Edouard, any more riches will be going to Celtic directly.

“Even with this situation of his contract, because people were seeing Celtic were looking to get around £18 to £20m for him. They are still are likely to get that because I’m told that these are very achievable clauses.”

Fans surely buzzing

Despite having just a year left on his contract with Celtic, watching their top scorer over multiple years depart for just £14m almost felt insulting, that’s especially when you consider the sheer amount of money available to Premier League clubs.

However, if that tag does indeed rise to £18.5m then it will provide a significant cash injection to the Bhoys over the next few years.

Ange Postecoglou spent around £20m this summer which means that the club are already in the green by around £14m-£15m after their player sales.

That gives Celtic a sizeable amount of spending power when the January transfer window comes around.

Future bonuses from Ajer and Edouard will only see their profits rise which in turn, should lead to an improved feel around the entirety of the club.

The sensibility with which Celtic are acting right now is a direct contrast to the events of 12 months ago when they spent so poorly on players like Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas.

The former has found the net on just six occasions while Barkas has already been touted with an exit after a nightmare first year in Glasgow.

Under the stewardship of Dominic McKay and Postecoglou, the future of Celtic looks a lot brighter. Supporters should be absolutely delighted right now.

Tottenham Hotspur: Journalist outlines Spurs’ deadline day plans

Tottenham Hotspur are confident of bringing Barcelona defender Emerson Royal into the club today, whilst are ‘pushing for more’ signings, as reported by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook on Twitter.

The Lowdown: Nuno and Paratici add final pieces to new-look squad

Set for a busy day in north London, Nuno Espirito Santo will no doubt be looking to spend his transfer kitty wisely between now and the deadline, with a focus on building a squad challenging for Champions League qualification this campaign after a strong start to the season.

Despite losing some experienced figures this summer, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss has bolstered his roster considerably, signing Bryan Gil, Cristian Romero, Pierluigi Gollini and Pape Matar Sarr, who will stay on loan at FC Metz [Transfermarkt].

With Barcelona ace Emerson expected to be next through the door, Nuno and director of football, Fabio Paratici, who has played a key role in recruitment this summer, look hungry for more additions.

The Latest: Spurs still ‘pushing for more’

Relaying information to his large audience on Twitter, talkSPORT’s Crook claimed: “THFC confident of making at least one signing today (Emerson Royal) but I’m told they are pushing for more.”

There are no clear indications as to who Paratici’s next target could be, while the likes of Ruben Neves and Adama Traore are perhaps the most recent links [The Sun].

The Verdict: Spurs fans will be pleased with transfer activity this window

In what is an exciting update for Lilywhites’ supporters, concerns about the amount of financial backing Daniel Levy may give the new manager will have been slightly allayed in what has been a positive transfer window for the club.

Solving the right-back area will have been a key priority for Nuno and Paratici in recent months, which looks to be nearing completion in the form of Brazilian talent Emerson, whilst another body in midfield would go a long way to appeasing the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful.

Only time will tell with regards to whether Spurs make any further captures, however at the very least they seem to be moving in the right direction to doing so.

India Blue began their defence of the Challenger Trophy on a winning note, beating India Red by 49 runs in the opening game in Cuttack. On a track that weared on as the day progressed, Robin Uthappa gave his team a headstart with his 94, Irfan Pathan took them to a more-than-competitive 235, and the bowlers didn’t let the initiative slip as Blue pulled off a convincing win.The only worry for Blue captain Yuvraj Singh, apart from his disappointment with the bat, was the innings from M Vijay. With his 89, the Red opener kept up the fight for his team despite wickets falling at the other end, and he found some support from Manoj Tiwary. However, his team’s hopes were nearly over when he fell; lured by a flighted delivery from R Ashwin, he failed to clear the fielder in the deep. The lower order couldn’t put up a fight, and the conclusion was only made interesting as Red battled to avoid conceding a bonus point – they ultimately fell three short as Irfan castled No. 11 Mohnish Parmar. For both teams, the top orders, barring one lone hand each, failed to impress. Yuvraj, eyeing a score of around 250, chose to bat, and his team were given a solid start from Uthappa and Ajinkya Rahane, the Mumbai opener. They picked up the odd boundary against the medium-pacers in their 87-run stand, before Uthappa decided to take advantage of the field restrictions when legspinner Piyush Chawla came on.Fourteen came in that 13th over, including a six over long-on; Uthappa, though, was lucky Parthiv Patel missed a stumping chance. Twelve came off the next over from Chawla, who finished with a disappointing 1 for 54 off ten overs. However, the momentum given by Uthappa was squandered as Blue lost Rahane and Yuvraj quickly.Medium-pacer Vinay Kumar and Parmar kept the runs in check. Parmar struck twice in the 26th over to leave Blue at 132 for 4 – removing Virat Kohli before Dinesh Karthik was out for a duck. Just 57 runs came between overs 21 to 35. Uthappa, who was dropped from India’s ODI squad for the Sri Lanka tour, looked set for a hundred, but a lazy shot to midwicket off Rohit Sharma saw him fall for 94.Ravi Inder made a painstaking 17, but Irfan provided the much-needed momentum with a run-a-ball 43. He took a six of Rohit early in his innings, and kept rotating the strike, finding the occasional four to ensure Blue ended up close to the 250-mark.Irfan then struck early in Red’s chase. Parthiv was caught-and-bowled by the left-armer for 6. Chawla was sent in as a pinch-hitter but he was unable to make up for his poor show with the ball. Red found themselves at 27 for 2 in the sixth over, and Vijay and captain S Badrinath quietly looked to build a foundation. They played out two straight maidens – overs 9 and 10 – but got 11 useful runs in Robin Uthappa’s over just before the drinks break. However, soon after the break Badrinath thrusted out his pad to a straighter one in legspinner Chetanya Nanda’s first over, and the umpire was convinced the ball would have hit the stumps. Rohit Sharma, who scored an brisk hundred against the visiting Australians in a tour game last month, played an uppish shot too early, and was caught at midwicket. At 66 for 4, it seemed curtains for India Red, but Vijay and Tiwary fought back. Vijay was the man scoring the runs, upping the ante after a composed start. Boundaries seemed to come at will – he hit Siddharth Trivedi for three on the trot, including a six over long-on. Nanda too was punished when he erred short. However, Yuvraj and Ashwin quickly chipped in with economical overs, and the required-rate crept up towards six an over. Vijay’s dismissal came at an inopportune time, so did the Red’s sixth wicket in the next over – Abhishek Nayar was out stumped off Yuvraj. The spinners then choked chances of another fightback. Tiwary remained unbeaten on 45 from 74 deliveries but was unable to thwart Blue a bonus point. The loss means Red must win their game against India Green on Friday, or in case if the match is abandoned tomorrow, hope Green lose by a bigger margin to Blue on Saturday.

Liverpool linked to Lorenzo Insigne

Liverpool have received a potentially significant boost in their pursuit of Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne.

What’s the story?

The Reds have been linked with a move for the highly-rated 30-year-old in recent weeks, with manager Jurgen Klopp keen to bolster his faltering forward line.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (as reported by the Liverpool ECHO), Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis will allow Insigne to depart the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for a fee in the region of €25 million (£21.3m) this summer.

Insigne only has one year remaining on his current contract with his boyhood club and is yet to agree fresh terms with the Serie A side, meaning Liverpool could pick him up in a cut-price deal.

Jurgen Klopp would love him

The 5 ft 4 forward has become one of football’s deadliest attackers in recent years and enjoyed a stellar 2020/21 campaign, bagging 19 goals in 35 top-flight appearances for Gli Azzurri.

His impressive tally of 11 assists in all competitions highlights Insigne’s unique ability to both put the ball in the back of the net with ease while creating opportunities for teammates on a regular basis.

After several standout performances at club level during 2020/21, the diminutive winger carried his form onto the international stage for Italy during the European Championship.

He notched two goals in six outings for Roberto Mancini’s charges, playing a pivotal part as the Italians claimed the Euro 2020 trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Insigne’s eye-catching displays during this summer’s tournament earned several plaudits from onlookers, including former Arsenal legend Ray Parlour.

Parlour said on talkSPORT (6:53 am, July 9, 2021). “Insigne is a real livewire. He gets on the ball, he runs at you, he is an excellent little player,” he added.

With both Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino way below their scintillating best last season, Klopp is thought to be in the market for some fresh attacking impetus, and Insigne could provide just that.

Although some may view his age as a slight concern, his lowly asking price should make this deal a risk worth taking, and the German tactician would surely love to be able to call upon Insigne’s services over the next couple of campaigns.

Forest dealt blow in Morgan Rogers pursuit

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a blow in their bid to bring Morgan Rogers to the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claim that Crystal Palace have now joined the race for the Manchester City winger, with Patrick Vieira believed to be keen to bolster his attacking options in south London ahead of transfer deadline day at the end of the month.

It has been previously reported that a number of Championship clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, are keen on a deal for the 19-year-old, who was in attendance for the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to the Cherries last Saturday.

Murphy will be gutted

Forest were seemingly leading the race for Rogers not that long ago, with Paul Taylor claiming that a switch to the City Ground looked to be progressing quickly. However, reports that a Premier League side in the shape of Crystal Palace have now entered the race for the winger could have left Forest CEO Dane Murphy gutted.

Considering how impressive the England under-19 international was during his loan spell at Lincoln City last season – where he struck up an impressive partnership with Forest’s Brennan Johnson – the potential signing of Rogers certainly appeared to be something of a potential coup for the Reds this summer.

Indeed, over his 28 League One appearances for Michael Appleton’s side last term, the £1.17m-rated forward bagged six goals, registered two assists and created nine big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 1.9 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns saw the man who the Imps manager dubbed an “outstanding” player earn a remarkable average SofaScore match rating of 7.09, ranking him as Lincoln’s second-best performer in the league.

However, with the offer of Premier League football likely to be a great deal more appealing than a move to the Championship, Murphy now faces a considerable job in convincing the £19k-per-week City starlet of a move to Forest this summer, which will be hugely frustrating for the Garibaldi CEO.

UAE win third sucessive match

Round-up of the fifth day’s matches from the Asian Cricket Council Elite Trophy

Cricinfo staff29-Jul-2008Group AUAE won their third successive match of the tournament, despite Malaysia legspinner Dinesh Sockalingam taking 6 for 39, including a hat-trick, at the Selangor Turf Club in Kuala Lumpur. UAE’s top order produced a strong batting display, led by opener Arshad Ali’s 67, and took their side to 211 with the last six batsmen contributing only 22 to the total. Sockalingam took four wickets in an over – including three in three balls – but by then UAE had posted a total that Malaysia would struggle to reach. They lost four wickets inside the first ten overs with only 40 on the board. M Krishnamurthi provided some late-order fightback with an unbeaten 40 but in the end Malaysia fell 57 runs short.Half-centuries by Nowroz Mangal and Noor Ali took Afghanistan to an easy six-wicket win over Saudi Arabia at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur. Offspinner Mohammad Nabi’s 5 for 30 restricted Saudi Arabia to 172, which Afghanistan chased in only 25.3 overs. Saudi Arabia kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but could have reached 200 as middle-order batsman Abid Naseem hung around to make useful partnerships with the tail. However Nabi bowled him for 67 in the 45th over and Saudi Arabia couldn’t push for quick runs in the final overs after Naseem’s fall. Afghanistan scored twice as quickly as Saudi Arabia and Mangal added 47 with Shaifqullah at more than seven an over and 50 with Ali at more than five an over. Ali was the top scorer with an unbeaten 49-ball 70 that included 10 fours.Group BQatar came back strongly after their 176-run defeat against Hong Kong on Monday to beat Kuwait by 24 runs at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur. In stark contrast to their poor batting yesterday, when they were bowled out for 100 in 19 overs, Qatar today posted 322. Openers Omer Taj and Muhammad Asram provided a 141-run start which then the middle order built on. Sibtain Raza was Kuwait’s most successful bowler with 5 for 55. Kuwait went after the target with much enthusiasm as their openers Nadeem Malik and Jagath Roshantha added 69 in 42 balls. Roshantha continued in the same vein after Nadeem’s fall and added 83 more with Mustansar Hasan. But after Roshantha’s dismissal, Kuwait slowed down as Sardar Badshah and Rusharat Ali took five wickets between them.

West Ham table Aguerd bid

According to Football Insider, a new ‘top target’ for the central defensive position has emerged for West Ham as GSB table a bid to sign Rennes colossus Nayef Aguerd.

The Lowdown: West Ham in defender chase…

Before trying to snap up new attackers, with the transfer window deadline now looming at the end of this month, manager David Moyes first has his sights set on landing a star centre-back.

Indeed, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee believes all attention is focused on the signing of a new defender who can reinforce West Ham’s backline before the start of 2021/2022.

The Irons are believed to be in talks for Fiorentina powerhouse Nikola Milenkovic after faltering in their bid to sign Kurt Zouma (Fabrizio Romano), but Football Insider has now brought news on yet another target.

The Latest: West Ham table Aguerd bid…

As per FI, West Ham have made an offer of £15 million to land Aguerd as a new ‘top target’ for Moyes emerges.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-gossip/” title=”West Ham latest gossip…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

GSB are prepared to pay a ‘significant sum’ to land one star centre-back addition and have received ‘encouraging bulletins’ about the Rennes ace in particular – who can also play in a full-back role.

While the club have bid £15m to sign Aguerd, it is also believed that his club are expected to reject West Ham’s approach as they continue to play ‘hardball’.

As a result, Moyes may have to turn to alternative targets despite their interest in the 25-year-old.

The Verdict: Move on…

Aguerd seems a would-be capable signing and one who could thrive in the Premier League, but if Rennes continue to prove challenging in negotiations, West Ham shouldn’t hesitate in moving on.

The Morocco international averaged a cool and composed 90.4% pass accuracy out from the back over 35 Ligue 1 starts last season, more than any Hammers defender managed by comparison (WhoScored).

Standing at a lofty 6 foot 2, he also possesses the physicality to succeed in England.

However, fellow target Milenkovic could bring similar traits to West Ham and it is believed they are ‘progressing’ in talks.

As such, it is perhaps best for Moyes and co to now focus all their attention on signing the Serbian.
