أشاد دييجو سيميوني المدير الفني لفريق أتلتيكو مدريد، بلاعبه لويس سواريز، بعدما قاد فريقه لفوز ثمين على أوساسونا بهدفين لهدف في الدوري الإسباني.

وسجل سواريز هدفًا في الدقائق الأخيرة، ليحافظ أتلتيكو مدريد على الصدارة، بفارق نقطتين عن ريال مدريد قبل الجولة الأخيرة لليجا.

ونشرت صحيفة “ماركا” الإسبانية تصريحات سيميوني، وقال عن مغادرته السريعة للملعب بعد نهاية المباراة: “خرجت بسرعة للذهاب إلى غرفة تبديل الملابس”.

وأضاف: “الفريق لعب مباراة رائعة بعد المجهود ضد ريال سوسيداد، لقد أتيحت لنا فرص التهديف، لم نتمكن من التحلي بالقوة حتى سجل بوديمير هدف أوساسونا، واستجاب الفريق”.

وتابع سيميوني: “عندما كانت لدينا فرص أقل للتسجيل كنا أقوياء، وعندما كان هناك المزيد كانت فرصنا أقل في القوة”.

He might just have stumbled onto something here.

Whilst Mark Lawrenson might not come across as everyone’s favourite cup of tea, there are a couple of times that he manages to get things right, and this is one of those times.

What’s he said?

Speaking on the BBC Sport website during his weekly predictions column, Lawrenson made an interesting point about the Blades’ last game against West Ham United:

“You can never accuse either of these teams of lacking effort or intensity, and I think this will turn out to be a cracking contest. Sheffield United were poor early on in their draw with West Ham last week, but they turned it around after the break and I am sure Chris Wilder’s half-time team talk will have had something to do with it.”

Making a strong start

If you take a look at Sheffield United’s games so far this season, this has tended to be a trend for them.

They have only managed to take the lead in games three times this season, against Crystal Palace, Everton and Arsenal and in each of those fixtures they went on to get three points.

In all the other games they have found themselves chasing the game at some point, and that has brought in a mixed bag of success, with results such as a draw against Chelsea and a defeat against Leicester City.

So this should really be an indicator to Chris Wilder and the team about how they need to start approaching games, with ‘start’ being the keyword there.

Wilder has said that he doesn’t like his team being called a ‘defensive side’, but as we have discussed on FFC, that is how his team have been playing so far this season.

That doesn’t make it a bad thing though, in fact, it should give them a decent platform to build on during matches.

If the Blades can just start the game with a little bit more aggression and then get themselves a lead to defend, then they’ve shown that they are more than capable of holding out for a result, just like they did against Arsenal.

Illan Meslier hasn’t been given much of a chance for Leeds United so far this season, but he may get an opportunity in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, if the Frenchman is to get a run in the team it will be coming in some less than ideal circumstances.

Kiko Casilla may be facing a suspension after he was accused of racially abusing Jonathan Leko during Leeds’ 1-0 loss to Charlton Athletic earlier in the season.

Phil Hay has confirmed that the FA are still investigating that incident, but with the new rules in place, the minimum punishment that could be handed out is a six-game ban.

If Casilla is found guilty of this an opportunity will almost certainly be handed to Meslier, and despite the circumstances, he will have to take full advantage of this chance.

Of course, if the Spanish stopper is found guilty that will have certain ethical implications and Leeds will have a decision to make with how they want to deal with the player internally.

However, strictly from a footballing standpoint, a suspension may open a door for Meslier to impress.

The 19-year-old hasn’t been given a chance in the league this season, and with the Whites potentially heading into a season-defining portion of the season the goalie could stake a claim for the number one shirt if Casilla is punished.

There is certainly a reason to believe he could step up too. He’s saved two penalties for the U23 side this term and was hailed by fans for his athletic ability between the posts.

It’s not quite panic stations yet for Leeds United, but these words should act as a stark warning.

Former player Danny Mills has stressed just how important promotion is for Leeds this season, and that it could be a case of do or die for the club.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Talksport, Mills said that the amount of money being spent on players wages meant that there could be tough times ahead:

“The wage bill at the moment for Leeds, including the manager and his staff, is £35/£40million. That is big for the Championship. They need to get up this season. If they don’t, you start to worry again.

“The owner has just come out and done a rare interview and said there might be new investment and he could be looking to sell the club. We’ve known that for some time. But if they don’t go up this season with that sort of wage bill… it will be difficult times again for Leeds.”

Bang on the money

It’s well known just how much money there is in the Premier League, £170m to be exact if you get promoted, and Mills is spot on with his estimations that failure to go up could cause a bit of a meltdown.

There were reports last season that a sort of implosion could take place at Elland Road if they didn’t get promoted, with Marcelo Bielsa set to depart and the owner ready to sell the club.

Having doubled down with loan signings in order to push them over the line, failure to do so would leave them having to build a new squad without a lot of money to work with.

That’s why this season is arguably one of the biggest in Leeds’ history. Failure to get promotion this year could result in a large step back in their efforts to get back to the top flight for the first time since 2004.

So just how long can Leeds afford to flirt with disaster before the consequences of taking these risks come home to roost? Only time will tell.

It must be pretty difficult for Real Madrid fans not to get just a bit too excited about Martin Odegaard at the moment.

The 20-year-old Norwegian midfielder is definitely thriving on his loan spell at Real Sociedad and is, quite frankly, tearing La Liga apart.

And this is no exaggeration either. He’s definitely been one of La Real’s best performers so far in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign.

Just the fact that he was named the club’s Player of the Month in August and is their highest-ranked player overall according to Whoscored goes a long way to justifying that statement.

And just recently, when his performances finally started getting the attention of the public, there was a report from AS stating that Real Madrid actually can recall the player back from loan earlier than originally planned.

Odegaard should be Real Sociedad’s player for two straight seasons but if Los Blancos change their mind, they can recall him as early as the 2020/21 campaign. The same report also states that the Whites have definitely noticed the young Norwegian’s brilliant displays, suggesting that his loan spell might actually be cut short.

But even though there’s no denying that Odegaard has simply been fantastic, taking him away from Real Sociedad and cutting his loan spell in half could prove detrimental.

Yes, it’s easy to get carried away and mesmerised by his performances as of late, but Real Madrid should be patient and let him continue developing before he makes his big return.

Odegaard is building something over at La Real and snatching it away from him early might have bad consequences and disrupt his progress. Breaking into the Real Madrid team – regardless of how well you’ve played elsewhere in La Liga – is never easy, and two campaigns of regular football is always more beneficial than just one followed by another wallowing on the bench.

It is essential that they don’t let that happen and that they let him thrive and grow even further now that his form is on the rise. Of course, there’s no knowing if it will continue further down the road but at the very moment, the mere mention of a potential callback could be a distraction that disrupts his flow.

Odegaard will still be far from a finished product by the time those two years go by but Los Blancos are bound to get an even better player back in their squad if they just wait a little bit longer. Patience is key here – let the youngster continue to blossom.

According to The Times, Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is pushing for a loan move away from the club.

What’s the word?

Rojo’s time at Man United has been a topsy-turvy one and was rather summed up by what happened in the closing stages of the English transfer window.

The Red Devils refused to allow him to join Everton, a decision that has left the Argentine angry after his club valued him at £25m.

The 6 foot 2 central defender has moved further down the pecking order after the arrival of Harry Maguire and as a result, it looks as though he’s seeking a loan move away.

Per The Times, he’s pushing for a transfer to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce on a season-long loan.

United shouldn’t consider a loan

After not allowing him to join Everton, it’s clear United see some use for Rojo. What that role is, however, remains to be seen but the fact is they shouldn’t be thinking of sanctioning a loan.

At the age of 29, Rojo isn’t getting any younger and his resale value will only continue to plummet and they’d be in danger of not getting anywhere close to the £25m that they want.

United aren’t exactly strapped for cash, such is their meteoric size, but spending £80m on Maguire is sure to have ransacked them significantly.

The Argentina international rarely featured last term, starting just two games in the Premier League which provides an indication of how he’s thought of at Old Trafford.

Although a loan move would get him off their books for the time being, they’d surely only re-encounter more issues over the player’s future going forward.

For the time being, Rojo’s contract expires in 2021 so it’s either now or next summer that they have to sell him. If they want to maximise profits then shipping him on permanently now, rather than later would be beneficial.

Allowing a loan move at this stage seems somewhat foolish and shouldn’t be considered. Instead, they should be looking to get a fee for the defender.

وأضاف: “أنا لا أريد أن أتحدث عن أشياء أخرى، لكن لا أعرف سبب طرد مصطفى محمد، هناك كوع في وجه لوينداما ودونك في المباريات السابقة، ولم يحرك الحكم ساكنًا”.

Oh David Luiz. Arsenal have gotten used to seeing their centre-backs making costly mistakes – after all, the north London side have had to bare witness to Shkodran Mustafi in recent years.

But following his shock dead-line day arrival from rivals Chelsea, David Luiz has come into Unai Emery’s line-up from the second Premier League game of the season.

After seeing the 32-year-old’s horror performance, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the summer signing.

Many supporters of the north London side were fuming with the defender’s mistakes and suggested Chelsea had the right idea in selling him.

Indeed, some insisted Luiz could have no complaints, with one fan in particular claiming that the centre-back simply isn’t “good enough”.
