The biggest challenge facing Rafael Benitez this summer

After spending so much money in the summer, Newcastle – and their Champions League winning manager – were criticised for sitting in second place in the Championship, while it looked like the much less moneyed Brighton would win the league.

It’s the kind of criticism that football does best: it neglects nuance and promotes only the facts that suits the argument while burying others.

For example, Newcastle’s net spend – thanks mostly to the sales of Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum – was the lowest of any promoted club since the Championship was renamed back in 2004/05. Brighton’s, on the other hand, was the second highest, beaten only by Cardiff in 2013.

All of that talk is deeply unhelpful, though. In fact, it’s thoroughly distracting.

The most important places in the Championship are the first and second places. Both are equal in their prize: a place in next season’s Premier League. That is genuinely all that matters. Newcastle were crowned champions and lifted the trophy, but it’s the kind of thing you only want to win for pride – you’d rather come second and avoid relegation the next season than win come 18th the next year. Newcastle should have bigger fish to fry.

And they do. But that in itself will pose the biggest problem for Rafael Benitez this summer: managing expectation.

Already, people have started to talk about how well the Magpies will do next season. They have a huge, packed stadium, massive support, one of the biggest names in football management and, thanks to their net spend this season and a new Premier League TV rights deal, they should have more money to spend than ever before. As the only Premier League club in the North East, Newcastle should be aiming for glory. Right?

And yet that’s the last thing Benitez should want to promise. Clearly, he’s only the Newcastle manager because he thinks he can succeed there, but instant success is a dangerous dream, especially for a club who are newly promoted.

One of the reasons Newcastle’s season looks so underwhelming it because of their home form. It picked up in the final few weeks, but if only home games counted, the Magpies would be in the playoffs and only after a late surge.

Just like automatic promotion, though, it doesn’t matter how you do it, just as long as you do it. They won the league and they did it even though their home form wasn’t the best – their away form was. So what?

But unlike this season’s league position, home form will matter a great deal next season. The thought that Benitez’s side would sweep all before them in the Championship is what created an expectant atmosphere around St James’ Park this season. In turn, the team started to struggle.

Next season could be a similar story is expectations aren’t managed. Only worse. Struggling to draw with Bristol City at home is one thing, but that’ll only get harder next season.

And yet, there should be genuine optimism at the club for the first time in a long while. All of the reasons why someone would expect a great deal from Newcastle next season are still true, but the expectation should be that it should translate into long-term success, not breaking into the top half of the table next season.

At the moment, the Premier League is split into a top seven and the rest. Finishing eighth should be seen as winning the league, and yet Leicester City – who were said to be in a relegation battle not so long ago – are only two points behind that position. That’s how tight it is.

The question for Newcastle needs to be what they count as success next season. It is a town that thirsts for European football and its first major trophy in decades, but it’s the perception that’s damaging.

They’re not a team who spent big to get out of the Championship, they’re a team who did it intelligently. But the perception that spending millions of pounds and winning the league is probably what will translate into a clamour to spend again and achieve a top half finish, maybe more.

Benitez’s biggest job this summer is keeping feet on the ground.

Five things we learned from Liverpool’s goalfest at Selhurst Park

After a first half goal bonanza, you could be forgiven for thinking that this game finishing 4-2 was almost underwhelming. We may not see another first half like this one in the Premier League this season, ludicrous is probably the only way it can fairly be described.

Jurgen Klopp and Alan Pardew were too emotionally invested to enjoy the first half fireworks and they will be left with plenty to consider. Such excitement often comes at a price and things were no different at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening. Questions will be asked of both sides’ defences in the respective post mortems and pondering will be done to find answers to problems that have crippled each team for far longer than they would wish to admit.

The match meandered throughout, with Liverpool always the favourites to claim a victory, but Crystal Palace do have their own nuggets of positive news they can cling on to despite the continuation of their abysmal league form in 2016.

More specifically, though, what did we learn from this cracker?

Aside from his two goals, James McArthur was superb against Liverpool. Crystal Palace’s midfielder has been given a little more freedom in midfield this season and produced some of the best form of his career to date.

The excellent header for his, and Palace’s, second goal topped off a strong all-round performance. His industry has been key for Palace previously, but he is developing into something far more significant for the Eagles’ midfield.

Brief Improvement, No change

Despite a seeming improvement defensively of late, Liverpool reverted to type against Palace. Dejan Lovren’s mistake opened the floodgates and they looked extremely vulnerable throughout.

Liverpool’s defenders were all more effective in the opposition’s final third than in their own third and that is a running concern for Jurgen Klopp.

King Philippe

Reaching a consistent level of performance has been the question that has surrounded Philippe Coutinho’s Premier League career. It finally now feels like the Brazilian has become a regular performer, producing the same excellent standard of football week on week.

Coutinho has flair to get people off their seats and the talent to pull off things most players wouldn’t dream of – the league is a better place for his consistency.

Missing Andros

Andros Townsend’s presence at Crystal Palace is vital. Signed as the replacement for Yannick Bolasie this summer, the former Newcastle and Tottenham winger offers pace and direct running on the opposite flank to Wilfried Zaha that gives any opponent something to worry about on fast breaks.

Lee was anonymous while he was on the pitch and this game could have played out rather differently had Townsend started.

Improved Alberto

Alberto Moreno had lost his starting slot at left-back to James Milner, which showed just how far out of consideration he had fallen for Jurgen Klopp.

Had Milner been fit, Moreno would unlikely have started this game. Milner was not fit, however, and Moreno grasped his opportunity like a desperate man.

No defensive calamities, energetic and intelligent offensively, Moreno has piled the pressure on Milner.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

McGuire is one of the most sought after strikers in MLS at the moment, and was unfortunately the victim of a failed transfer abroad in January. Despite traveling to England and even taking pictures in the club's kit, Blackburn officials failed to submit the paperwork on time to complete his transfer.

As a result, he returned to Orlando and is set to play with them at least through the summer transfer window.

The Dragons frontman has become a talismanic presence at StoK Racecourse – with club co-owner Ryan Reynolds among his biggest fans – and has now found the target on 81 occasions through 101 appearances for the Welsh outfit.

Mullin fired Wrexham to promotion back into the Football League last season and is up and running in 2023-24 after recovering from a punctured lung. Summer signing Fletcher is among those to have been left mightily impressed by the 28-year-old’s skill set, with the veteran Scotland international telling of his fellow forward: "I have played with a lot of good strikers and Paul's finishing is second to none. Left foot, right foot, it doesn't matter where it lands for him, he will hit the target and I am delighted for him to get off the mark this season."

WHAT THEY SAID

Fletcher has also been among the goals for Wrexham since joining them as a free agent, with his account opened when netting a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in a 3-3 draw with Crewe. The 36-year-old said of his experiences with the Dragons: "What a feeling. Brilliant. You want to get off the mark as a striker and score as many goals as you can. To get one in the 95th minute was great. I got eye contact with Jacob [Mendy] straight away, he knew I would make that run and it was a great, pinpoint cross. I didn't have to do much."

Higuain, Aguero or Icardi? Messi's strike partner options for World Cup 2018

The Boca striker had netted 12 goals in as many games prior to his injury, and also featured in the Albiceleste's last four qualifiers, albeit without hitting the net. Even if he does beat the odds and make it back to competitive action before June, however, his World Cup dream is effectively over.AdvertisementGetty2Cristian PavonThe Boca Juniors star joins Martinez in the squad as one of Sampaoli's picks from the Argentine Superliga. Sampaoli has already visited the Cilindro on no less than three occasions to watch Martinez, who obliged the Argentina coach with an incredible seven goals to earn his first call up to the senior Argentina side. The World Cup may be arriving just too soon for the striker, but his talent is undeniable and a strong showing in this double-header might just tip the balance and see him make Russia as a wildcard pick.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Atletico Madrid's Correa got the nod ahead of both Icardi and Dybala to join the squad, a chance he has richly earned thanks to his excellent performances at the Wanda Metropolitana. The 23 year old offers depth both through the middle and out wide in the Argentina attack and will be eager to add to his collection of seven caps against Italy and Spain.

Legspinner Ish Sodhi was the pick of Northern Districts’ bowlers, picking up 5 for 167, backed up by Scott Kuggeleijn’s 4 for 133.Northern Districts batsmen got starts but only Popli (94) and Kuggeleijn (53) went on to make substantial scores as they were dismissed for 316. Canterbury brushed aside their target of 89 in 17 overs and climbed to second place on the points table.George Worker’s all-round efforts – a knock of 123 and a four-for – supported by centuries from Dane Cleaver and Greg Hay set up Central Districts’ 87-run win over Wellington, their first of this season’s Plunket Shield.Put in to bat, Central Districts amassed 424 for 6 declared, riding on a 230-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Cleaver and Worker that steadied them after they were 148 for 5. Top-order fifties from Luke Woodcock and Stephen Murdoch (82) gave Wellington a good start but their chase fell away after a batting slide that saw them lose five wickets for 26 runs. Luke Ronchi waged a lone battle scoring 88 as Wellington lost eight wickets to left-arm spinners, Ajaz Patel and Worker, with Worker taking 4 for 58.Brad Wilson’s 107 and Neil Broom’s 84 helped Otago play out a draw against Auckland after they were set a target of 444 at Eden Park.Auckland managed to post a 444-run target thanks Jeet Raval’s unbeaten 202 in the second innings that included 28 fours. Rob Nicol and Colin de Grandhomme also contributed with fifties, the latter striking 52 off 43 balls with six fours and two sixes. After being inserted, Auckland were bundled out for 277 on the first day, riding on fifties from Nicol (60) and de Grandhomme (59). Tarun Nethula then led their response with the ball, taking 3 for 64 to help dismiss Otago for 265.With the draw, Auckland picked up six points to maintain their position at the top of the points table.

Give this team 12 months – Shastri

India’s team director Ravi Shastri believes “the scoreline does not matter” so long as the team continue to show their attacking intent and push their opponents

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Dec-2014Despite India losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy following the draw against Australia at the MCG, team director Ravi Shastri is not too concerned. India made a fighting attempt at chasing 364 in Adelaide, but fell short by 48 runs. Then they lost the Brisbane Test following a second-innings collapse, before holding on for a draw in Melbourne where Australia were on top for several periods of play.Shastri said he does not care “if the scoreline reads 3-0 or 4-0″, as long as India continue showing their attacking intent and push their opponents.”What I am more focused on is the mindset to go out and perform. The scoreline does not matter,” Shastri told after the third Test, with particular praise saved for Ajinkya Rahane and India’s Test captain-in-waiting Virat Kohli, who produced a 262-run partnership on the third day.”Two young turks took the attack to the opposition and Australia took notice. I am happy with the mindset. The batting that I saw on day three was something I have not seen in a long time. The whole of Australia stood up. India have not come out to compete, they are here to win. Mark my words, give this team 12 months and they will be back in the top two. When asked about the areas in which India could do with immediate improvement, Shastri conceded that the absence of a fifth bowler was hurting the team. “What we miss overseas is a batsman who can bowl a bit. When Sourav Ganguly was there, he could bowl 10-15 overs. Combinations have to be tried out that can fit the billing.”If you have three fast bowlers, the workload is hard. One needs a fifth bowler. The way India bowled on the fifth morning, they have the confidence to keep Australia quiet. We will go to Sydney without a care in the world.”
