Cobras clinch home final with win

David Miller’s unbeaten 42 helped Dolphins to their third win of the season, after their bowlers had done well to restrict Lions on a sluggish surface at Chevrolet Park. Lions, having been inserted, lost wickets at regular intervals during their innings, and their highest run scorer was Chris Morris with 37 down at No.7. Morris struck three sixes and a four during his 22-ball knock, but no batsman stayed long enough at the other end for Lions to string together a significant partnership. Robbie Frylinck and Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets apiece, while Prenelan Subrayen, Ryan McLaren and Craig Alexander chipped in with a scalp each.Dolphins lost the openers early in the chase, but Khaya Zondo (28) and Miller led a recovery with a 54-run stand for the third wicket. The team lost two more quick wickets, but Miller stayed not out till the end, and was aided by a useful 19 from Bravo at the other end, as Dolphins eventually won by five wickets with five balls to spare.A fifty from the opener Richard Levi and a three-wicket haul from Robin Peterson were the cornerstones behind Cape Cobras‘ eight-run victory against Knights in Bloemfontein. The win meant that Cobras will stay on top of the table, and will host the final at the Newlands on December 12. Opting to bat, Cobras began brightly, as Levi put up half-century stands for the first two wickets with Andrew Puttick and Omphile Ramela (34). Levi stayed on till the penultimate over, striking two fours and sixes each during his 61-ball 64 to guide Cobras to 145 for 4.Knights began their chase steadily, but were rocked by four wickets in the space of four overs, and fell to 59 for 4 by the 11th over. Rudi Second led a recovery, whacking a 33-ball 50 with three fours and two sixes, and Tumelo Bodibe hit 30, but Knights’ run-rate was kept in check by incisive bowling from Dane Paterson, George Linde and Peterson. Knights needed 18 from the final over, but could manage only nine, meaning they lost their third game of the season. The Warriors bowlers delivered a 20-run consolation win in Bloemfontein. Titans had built a solid base with openers Heino Kuhn and Henry Davids knocking off 75 of the target of 149, but the rest of the line-up crumbled.Rusty Theron and Yaseen Vallie picked up four wickets and conceded only 19 runs in their six overs to ensure the Titans middle-order could not take advantage of a strong start. Only one other player besides the openers could reach double-figures as Titans ended their campaign at the bottom of the table, with only two wins from 10 matches.Warriors’ batting had struggled as well. They lost three wickets in the Powerplay before Colin Ingram provided some stability with 40 off 44 balls. Fast bowler Marchant de Lange was the primary threat, as he finished with a career-best 4 for 31. His spell may well have decided the match had Christiaan Jonker not smashed 49 off 29 balls, with two fours and three sixes. Warriors had been 114 for 5 at the end of the 17th over, but they carted 31 in the next three to give their bowlers the momentum they needed.

South Africa are sweating on the fitness of regular Test wicketkeeper AB de Villiers, who is suffering with a tight right hamstring and was unable to keep wicket during Monday’s practice session. CSA said de Villiers is likely to play the first Test against Sri Lanka starting on Wednesday though there are doubts over whether he will keep.De Villiers’ injury worry increases the chances of 21-year-old Quinton de Kock making a second Test appearance, five months after making his debut, and this time he may find himself behind the stumps as well.It was during his century in Saturday’s ODI in Hambantota that de Villiers first experienced discomfort in his hamstring. He spent an hour and 41 minutes at the crease and scored a blazing 108 off 71 balls to take South Africa to their highest-ever total against Sri Lanka and a first ODI series win on the island. He did not take part in any wicket-keeping drills in Galle as a result. In a media release, CSA said he will “continue to receive treatment,” and that he is “likely to be available for selection for Wednesday’s match.” However, de Villiers has previously suffered from back problems and the management may choose to err on the side of caution if they feel he is not fully fit.Should de Villiers be forced out of the starting XI, de Kock would take his place behind the stumps but will probably bat in the lower-middle order. Although de Kock’s Test selection appeared premature in the only Test he played – against Australia in March – the youngster has hit form in Sri Lanka after struggling through the first two ODIs and struck a century alongside de Villiers on Saturday. If de Villiers misses out, it may also create room for a Test debut for Stiaan van Zyl – the Cobras’ top-order batsman who is part of the squad but is thought to be competing with de Kock for the No. 6 spot. Dean Elgar remains set to open with Alviro Petersen.

BCCI suspends RCA after Modi elected president

Minutes after Lalit Modi was declared the president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, the BCCI suspended RCA for allowing a banned individual to be a part of its affairs

‘I’m going to show them how cricket is run’ – Modi

Minutes after Lalit Modi was declared the president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, the BCCI suspended RCA for allowing a banned individual to be a part of its affairs. At the same time, the BCCI has said cricketers from Rajasthan won’t suffer since an ad-hoc committee will run cricket in the state till the dispute with the RCA is resolved.”Interim president Shivlal Yadav has suspended RCA as per rule 32 (vii) under the BCCI’s constitution. We will very shortly come out with an ad-hoc committee to take care of cricket in Rajasthan,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “Modi has already been expelled from the BCCI and he has not challenged that ban. Those are known things. So, for us, Modi is a non-existent person.”BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel: ‘The ad-hoc committee will work out how Rajasthan can play in BCCI tournaments’•Mahesh AcharyaModi called the BCCI move “illegal” and said he would challenge it. “They have no powers to form an ad hoc committee,” he said. “They have illegally suspended RCA. They cannot do that.”Immediately after returning as the RCA president, Modi spelt out his plan to revamp cricket in Rajasthan. However, with the BCCI deciding to suspend RCA, the fierce tussle between the former IPL chairman and the BCCI seems to be far from concluded. Patel was in no mood to resolve any dispute. “Where is a question of resolving anything? We have suspended both Modi and the RCA. Those who want to go with them can go,” he said.”But we will see that cricket is not affected and cricketers are not affected across all age groups. The ad-hoc committee will work out how Rajasthan can play in BCCI tournaments. The boys and cricket should not suffer. That is our primary goal. The players do not need to worry. We will see how to make them comfortable.”Patel said last week’s Supreme Court order, which directed the court-appointed observers to announce the results on May 6, had made it clear that the aggrieved parties can challenge the poll results at an appropriate forum. “In the same order on April 30, the honourable Supreme Court has directed that if it is found by BCCI that any person has acted against any rule/regulation/law which is to be enforced by us, it would be open to us to take action against such person. Here it is the RCA that has gone against our rules and we have taken action now.”Sharad Pawar, the former BCCI and ICC president, said the board’s move to suspend the RCA was shocking. “I was shocked to hear about the decision. I think it is a very harsh decision by the BCCI,” Pawar told PTI. “For the sake of one individual to suspend a whole organisation is really shocking. I hope (BCCI interim president) Shivlal Yadav will show some spirit in the organisation and respect the views of the judiciary.”Modi, who was the founding chairman of the IPL, was suspended by the BCCI on April 26, 2010, following various allegations of misconduct. After Modi left the country citing security reasons, a special enquiry panel appointed to conduct an enquiry into the 11 charges against Modi found him guilty on eight counts. As a result, a special general meeting of the BCCI expelled Modi for life on September 25, 2013. According to the BCCI regulations, Modi’s expulsion cannot be revoked for at least three years from the date of issue of the ban.

Shoaib Malik signs with Hobart Hurricanes

Shoaib Malik has been signed by Hobart Hurricanes for the upcoming season of the Big Bash League

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Oct-2013Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan batsman, has been signed by Hobart Hurricanes for the upcoming season of the Big Bash League. It will be Malik’s first stint in the Australian T20 league, in which Shahid Afridi has featured in the past seasons.”He’s an exciting player, a fast paced batsman who will likely bat in our middle order and he’ll add another option to our bowling stocks as well,” Damian Wright, the Hurricanes coach, said. “He is a quality player with a quality T20 record and his performances in the Caribbean Premier League suggest he’s in red-hot form right now.”Representing the Barbados Tridents, Malik was the leading run-scorer in the inaugural edition of the Caribbean Premier League with 272 runs from eight matches. Overall, Malik has played 134 T20 matches and scored 3396 runs at a strike rate of 123.31. He has also picked up 75 wickets with his offspin.”Those are impressive stats for someone who has played so many games in a format where you often have to place little value on your wicket in search of quick runs at the end of an innings,” Wright said.Hobart Hurricanes, led by George Bailley, also include Dmitri Mascarenhas and Owais Shah as their overseas players for the season.

North, Hogan too much for Yorkshire

Skipper Marcus North top-scored with 68 as Glamorgan opened their Yorkshire Bank 40 campaign with a 28-run victory over Yorkshire at Colwyn Bay.

05-May-2013Glamorgan 285 for 7 (North 68, Pyrah 4-43) beat Yorkshire 257 (Gale 65, Hogan 3-29) by 28 runs
ScorecardSkipper Marcus North top-scored with 68 as Glamorgan opened their Yorkshire Bank 40 campaign with a 28-run victory over Yorkshire at Colwyn Bay.After winning the toss Glamorgan made 285 for 7 in their 40 overs, with Will Bragg and Chris Cooke also scoring half centuries. But Yorkshire could only make 257 all out in reply, with Dean Cosker taking 3 for 36, although a quickfire 53 from Jonny Bairstow and a partnership of 93 between Gary Ballance and skipper Andrew Gale gave the visitors hope. After Mark Wallace was bowled by Steven Patterson in the eighth over, Bragg and Cooke showed attacking intent with the Glamorgan 100 coming up from 15.2 overs and Bragg going to a 48-ball 50. But next ball Bragg was bowled by Pyrah leaving Glamorgan 105 for 2 in the 17th over. The loss of Bragg did not deflect Cooke, who registered a 46-ball 50 with seven fours, but he failed to build on to a good start when he was caught and bowled by Steve Patterson for 58.The fourth-wicket partnership of North and Jim Allenby looked well settled until Allenby holed out at long-on to give Will Rhodes a wicket on debut.North cracked his fifth boundary as he became the third Glamorgan batsman to reach a half century. They accelerated in the latter stages with 14 coming off one Moin Ashraf over before Pyrah took a very sharp return catch to remove North for 68 from 63 balls.Glamorgan’s hopes of getting towards 300 were dashed when Murray Goodwin, who made 45, and Graham Wagg were out to consecutive deliveries from Pyrah, who was the pick of the Yorkshire attack with 4 for 43.Yorkshire were stunned when Wagg dismissed Phil Jaques and Joe Root in the space of three balls in the second over of their reply. And that helped Glamorgan restrict Yorkshire to 38 for 2 after the first 10 overs.Ballance and Gale began patiently rebuilding before the introduction of Cosker paid dividends when Ballance was stumped off a wide with his first ball.Bairstow cracked three fours off a Michael Reed over to ease the increasing pressure and then hit Wagg for a four and a six from two balls as 16 came off the over. But Glamorgan fought back as Gale was trapped leg before attempting to sweep Cosker.Wagg produced another expensive over with 16 coming off it as Bairstow reached a 34 ball 50 with seven fours and a six before Pyrah holed out on the boundary to give Cosker his third victim. It left Yorkshire needing 105 off 63 balls, but the key wicket came when Michael Hogan returned to the attack to dismiss dangerman Bairstow. Rashid ended with 42 not out from 28 balls but he ran out of partners.
