Saurashtra’s middle and lower order failed to capitalise on the start given by the top four batsmen and conceded three points to Madhya Pradesh. Saurashtra were all out for 492 even though they were 362 for 3 at the start of the day. MP are still second from bottom in Group B while Saurashtra are fifth.Sagar Jogiyani and Jaydev Shah resumed on 137 and 19, still behind MP’s score by 257. Shah fell for 21 in the second over of the day to Ishwar Pandey. Jogiyani and Aarpit Vasavada kept them on track with a stand of 53 and took them past 400. But Vasavada was dismissed for 35 by offspinner Jalaj Saxena. Pacer Pandey handed them two more jolts, removing Chirag Jani and Kamlesh Makvana within three deliveries as the score slumped to 435 for 7. Jogiyani continued at the other end and approached a double-hundred but fell short by 10 runs, when he was sent back by Saxena. Saurashtra were now 463 for 8 and could add only 29 more as Saxena took one more wicket and Pandey finished with 5 for 144.MP batted again as Saxena continued his form and scored an unbeaten 56 even though the innings saw two run-outs, of Satyam Choudhary (29) and Naman Ojha (1), before they ended the day on 119 for 2.
ScorecardTamil Nadu took three points from the drawn match with Railways with a first-innings lead, as expected, after only 14 overs of play was possible on the last day in Delhi. TN were 10 for 1 overnight in the second innings and could take the field only after lunch because of fog and play lasted little more than an hour before bad light interrupted again.TN are now placed fourth with 17 points while Railways continue to top the table with 21.

Malolan Rangarajan bagged five wickets to bowl West Zone out for 287•ESPNcricinfo LtdA century from Ankit Bawne and his 93-run seventh-wicket stand with Rakesh Dhurv helped West Zone draw their Duleep Trophy quarter-final match against South Zone in Chennai. South Zone, however, were awarded the match on the basis of a first-innings lead and will now meet Central Zone in the second semi-final in Chennai, starting October 10.Having been batted out of the game over the first two days, and struggling at an overnight score of 155 for 6, West Zone looked in imminent danger of collapsing for a small total, thus giving South Zone the possibility of an outright win. However, Bawne and Dhurv dug in and added 98 runs in nearly 40.3 overs. Bawne brought up his seventh first-class hundred and Dhurv scored his 13th first-class fifty, before he was caught by Rohan Prem off left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas. His dismissal led to a flurry of wickets, as West Zone lost the remaining batsmen for just 41 runs. Offspinner Malolan Rangarajan completed his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, as West Zone were out for 287, in response to South Zone’s mammoth first-innings total of 600. Bawne remained unbeaten on 115 off 337 balls and his innings included seven fours and a six. Dhurv’s fifty, meanwhile, came off 107 balls and included six fours and a six. With a 313-run lead and first-innings points in the bag, South Zone decided to bat again. They declared after being 44 for 1 before the match was drawn. As a result of the first-innings win, South Zone will square off against Central Zone in the second semi-final on October 10.

Broad confirms Ashes fitness

Stuart Broad has expressed his confidence that he will be fit for the first Test of the Investec Ashes series which starts in front of his home crowd at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.Broad was forced to miss England’s warm-up game against Essex at Chelmsford after sustaining an injury to his right shoulder while diving to regain his ground while batting in the final of the ICCChampions Trophy. He subsequently had a cortisone injection on Monday in an aim to ease the inflammation and pain and returned to some gentle bowling on Wednesday.”I couldn’t be more confident that I will be 100% right,” Broad said. “If the series started today I’d be ready to go. It only really hurt when I got to the top of my bowling action and that was where the swelling was. So I had an anti-inflammatory injection to get rid of the swelling.”How it pulled up two days after the injection was the major part and that was yesterday. I managed to bat and bowl and do some running without any pain, so I am very confident I’ll be fine for TrentBridge.”Broad missed three Tests of the victorious 2010-11 Ashes series after sustaining a side injury and the second half of the successful Test series in India before Christmas due to a heel injury. If fit, he is almost certain to share the new ball for England with James Anderson.

Sutherland breaks silence on homework fiasco

James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has spoken for the first time about the “homework” fiasco that enveloped the national team on a horrid tour of India, stating his displeasure at how the squad’s discipline broke down

Daniel Brettig15-May-2013James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has spoken for the first time about the “homework” fiasco that enveloped the national team on a horrid tour of India, stating his displeasure at how the squad’s discipline broke down to the point that four players including then vice-captain Shane Watson were suspended from a Test match. At the time of the suspensions, which also ruled James Pattinson, Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Johnson out of contention for the third Test of the series in Mohali in March, Sutherland was overseas and conspicuous by his absence from CA’s public response to the episode, leaving the team performance manager Pat Howard to field questions. However Sutherland told ESPNcricinfo that he had since gained a deep understanding of the issues at play, and stressed to team management that such a scenario could not be allowed to unfold again.”My starting point with all of that is personally I’m disappointed we got to that stage,” Sutherland said. “I now have a pretty in-depth understanding of where and how it got to there and I’m still disappointed that it happened in the circumstances when it got to there and how it got to there.”I’m supportive of the decisions that were made at the time and I’m a really firm believer in the fact that those decisions will ultimately stand us in good stead as we build to sustained performance at the highest level. I think it’s pretty well understood internally what I think about it, and the need for us to ensure those things are dealt with better before they ever get to that stage.”While Sutherland was hesitant to attribute the suspensions and their prelude to any one major factor, he conceded that communication within the team had broken down, leaving players unaware of how badly the team’s captain Michael Clarke, coach Mickey Arthur and team manager Gavin Dovey felt that standards had slipped. It was an area the absence of the retired Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey was keenly felt.”It would be dangerous to narrow it down to one or two things,” Sutherland said. “It was a culmination of a whole lot of things, and to pinpoint it as being communication of people not necessarily understanding where they were … yes that is one of the reasons no doubt. But there’s a whole lot of others as well I think.”Issues of leadership and character within Australian cricket had been on Sutherland’s mind well before the events of India, and he would like to see greater emphasis placed on the education of young players so that their responsibilities to teammates and the game as a whole are better understood, alongside their burgeoning skills as batsmen and bowlers.”Clearly we want to be building or developing the best players and part of that is developing players who are not only capable in a cricketing sense,” Sutherland said. “They are strong of character, they’re highly resilient, they’re able to adapt, and they have all of these character traits. To some extent you’re born with those and to some extent they’re circumstantial according to your environment and also they can be developed.”That’s part of our challenge as a sport in developing our best talent is to do that even better in this day and age, understanding the variability of cricket today, the need to adapt and the need to be resilient, to get through tough conditions in a foreign country you might never have visited before. All of those things are part of character.”That comes back to our point about sending more younger players away for longer periods to learn what it’s like to try to fight through a six-week tour when you can’t make a run and fight your way through it. Phil Hughes in India, it wasn’t great to see him early on in the tour, but the way he fought through that tour of India I thought was fantastic, just the sort of stuff we want to see from our players when they’re down.”Sutherland said plans were in the works to extend CA’s remit to educate players at an earlier age, the better to prepare them for a game that is now split across three formats and a wide variety of attitudes and career paths, from the Baggy Green ideal now co-opted by the Commonwealth Bank as the new major sponsor of the Test team, to the individualism and money upfront mentality of the IPL, BBL and other Twenty20 leagues.”One of the things we will want to do over the next couple of years is identify and work with that talent at an even younger age than we have in the past,” Sutherland said. “We’ve tended to let the cream rise to the top in recent times, but perhaps we need to nurture those high potential players a little bit earlier, and develop their other character beyond their cricket abilities and prepare them for what’s next.”It’s not a lesson out of India, it’s something we’ve been talking about for quite some time, certainly I’ve been speaking to Pat Howard about it ever since he started [in 2011]. We’ve been talking about nurturing our young, talented teenagers a little bit earlier than we have in the past. Some other sports do that very well and I’d like to see cricket doing a lot more of that in the next little while.”

India's bowlers prevent whitewash

India were hurtling towards a 0-3 score line in the cold of Delhi, until their bowlers rallied in conditions that offered seam and spin

The Report by George Binoy06-Jan-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Not since the winter of 1983, when Clive Lloyd’s West Indies avenged their loss in the World Cup final, had India been whitewashed in an ODI series at home. Following their third poor batting performance against Pakistan, India were hurtling towards a 0-3 score line in the cold of Delhi, until their bowlers rallied in conditions that offered seam and spin, applying relentless pressure until Misbah-ul-Haq’s team cracked in the dead rubber. As Yuvraj Singh, pursued by team-mates, went off on a celebratory run and slide after catching Mohammad Hafeez in the penultimate over to secure a hard-fought victory, the exuberant celebrations on the field and in the stands at the Kotla were a release of emotion from a country that has had precious little to celebrate in cricket in recent times. An Indian victory, however, had appeared unlikely after their batsmen had crumbled against Pakistan’s versatile attack. A raw seam attack, spearheaded by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the debutant Shami Ahmed, had only 167 to defend and they went about it manfully. Ahmed began his spell with two maiden overs and continued to bowl with economy. Bhuvneshwar nipped out two early wickets with inswingers and bowled his ten overs on the trot, leaving Pakistan 55 for 2 after 19 overs.Smart stats

The ten-run win is India’s third lowest against Pakistan (in terms of runs) overall and their lowest in home ODIs against Pakistan. The lowest (four runs) was in Quetta in 1978.

The run aggregate in the game (324 runs) is the third lowest in an ODI in India in matches where both sides have been bowled out. It is also the second lowest aggregate in an India-Pakistan game, after the 212 runs in Sharjah in 1985.

For only the fourth time in India-Pakistan matches overall, and the first time since 1996 in Toronto, there was not a single half-century in the game. It is also the second such instance in Delhi.

Saeed Ajmal’s 5 for 24 is the fifth best performance by a Pakistan bowler against India. However, it is the second best by a Pakistan bowler in a defeat against India, after Imran Khan’s 6 for 14 in 1985.

During that period, India’s fielding was at its best, with Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja throwing their bodies around on a chilly evening to cut off fluent flicks and drives. The only easy runs Pakistan got were two leg-side wides from the offspinner R Ashwin that beat MS Dhoni and sped to the boundary.Pakistan rebuilt through Misbah, who batted doggedly for 39 off 82 balls, first with Nasir Jamshed and then with Umar Akmal. Both those stands were ended by Ashwin, and at 113 for 4 in difficult batting conditions, India were gaining ground. They received a lucky break, when Shoaib Malik was adjudged lbw to Ishant Sharma though he was hit outside the line, and Akmal charged Ravindra Jadeja too early and was stumped.Only Hafeez, batting at No. 7 because of an injury while bowling, stood between India and victory and he was dropped by Rahane in the 42nd over, a straightforward chance at leg slip. He dragged his team towards the target and had to refuse singles with the No. 11 Mohammad Irfan, after Pakistan had lost three wickets in eight balls. With 23 runs needed in the last two overs, Hafeez hit two boundaries before holing out to off Ishant.Any immediate anguish Pakistan felt, however, quickly dissipated as their players, heavily jacketed in the misty evening, celebrated a 2-1 series victory. That India had at least 167 to defend was largely down to Dhoni, who was Man of the Match for his captaincy and his 36 off 55 balls, and Jadeja. Having left out Virender Sehwag to give Rahane a run, India lost three early wickets to the pace and swing of Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan. And they continued to struggle against Saeed Ajmal, who dismissed Suresh Raina and Ashwin off successive deliveries on his way to a five-wicket haul. India were 111 for 6 in the 29th over. Dhoni immediately carted Hafeez for his third six over deep midwicket and in a later over he inflicted the blow – a flat smash – that forced the Pakistan opener down the order.Dhoni fell in the 35th over and Jadeja, because he was running out of partners, began to attack and score what he could. He hit a towering straight six off Umar Gul, and another off Ajmal over cow corner, but his riposte ended on 27. India were dismissed in the 44th over, but the wasted resources did not cost them the game.

Karnataka strong after conceding lead

Karnataka, after conceding a 66-run lead to Delhi due to Parwinder Awana’s half-century, came back strongly into the contest via a 136-run stand by their openers

Kanishkaa Balachandran at the Chinnaswamy Stadium09-Dec-2012ScorecardFortunes oscillated on the second day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, but Karnataka made amends after a poor opening day with a strong opening partnership between Robin Uthappa and KL Rahul. The duo not only erased the first-innings deficit of 66 but extended the lead to 70, undefeated. Karnataka held the upper hand by taking quick wickets in the morning session, but that initiative slipped when Parvinder Awana, fresh from a five-wicket haul the previous day, made an attacking fifty to give Delhi the lead. Karnataka then came back strongly by their openers. The talking point, though, was Awana’s elevation to India’s Test and T20 squads. News of his selection broke after lunch, when Delhi had taken the lead. By then, Awana had gained enough confidence to take the bowling apart, with all the specialist batsmen dismissed. His character was tested after he walked in with Delhi struggling at 144 for 7, still 48 adrift of Karnataka’s score. Delhi had just lost two wickets in two balls. Puneet Bisht went forward to drive a full delivery from HS Sharath and edged to the keeper, before Rajat Bhatia provided KL Rahul with a simple catch at second slip. The initial target of 192 seemed a long way off.Awana and Sumit Narwal kept the bowlers at bay with a steady partnership. Karnataka went on the defensive, pushing mid-off and mid-on back to the spinner KP Appanna. As Awana looked to play aggressively, the Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar had as many as four men in the deep while he was bowling. Delhi inched towards the lead and ended the opening session trailing by 15.After lunch, Awana batted in a different gear, biffing boundaries towards midwicket and slashing over point to take Delhi closer to the lead, which they achieved with a boundary over extra cover by Narwal. Appanna then nipped out two wickets in an over, leaving Awana with the No.11 for company. Karnataka struggled to remove the last-wicket pair. Fielders were placed in the deep but Awana still found the gaps, pulling and slashing when given width. He brought up his fifty off as many balls with a hoick towards midwicket, and was dismissed on 74 when he gloved Vinay to the keeper. It was an effective comeback by Delhi after their earlier struggle. They took the approach of batting positively, but like Karnataka, the top order was guilty of giving it away before getting settled.Shikhar Dhawan was foxed by extra bounce from Vinay, and he gloved to the keeper; Mithun Manhas looked dangerous with some crisp cover drives before he chased a full, away-swinging delivery off his namesake Abhimanyu Mithun and got an outside edge to the keeper. Vaibhav Rawal, playing his third first-class game, looked in good touch but was lucky to be dropped on 12 when Manish Pandey was slow to react at second slip. The let-off was a bit expensive as Rawal added 50 in quick time with Bhatia and went on to score 48. Rawal was strong off the front foot, punching past cover and driving down the ground when the seamers overpitched. Sharath, the most penetrative bowler of the morning, got rid of him when he slanted one across the left-hander and induced an edge. Rawal failed to carry on after making a start, but Awana gave Delhi control.Karnataka, in reply, had lost a wicket in the first over but the pair of Uthappa and Rahul ensured they went into the team break without having lost another wicket. Uthappa got the innings off to a positive start by angling the first ball of the innings wide of slip. The batsmen appeared to get a good measure of the second-day pitch, and waited patiently for the bad balls. Delhi maintained attacking fields but the tactic didn’t work as the pair found the gaps with ease. Uthappa was strong driving down the ground while Rahul too settled into a good rhythm, getting to his fifty with a controlled glide over the slips.Delhi had their chances of dismissing both of them, but fluffed it. Awana was the bowler on both occasions. Rahul was dropped on 44 by the keeper Bisht while Uthappa was let off on 64 by Rawal at third slip. Uthappa offered other chances too. Having endured a tough evening, Delhi will need to make the morning count on Monday, given that the first session has proven to be the most productive for the bowlers.

Clarke digests first series loss

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke is digesting the first series defeat of his reign, and its nature cannot go down easily

Daniel Brettig at Old Trafford10-Jul-2012Australia’s captain Michael Clarke is digesting the first series defeat of his reign, and its nature cannot go down easily. Clarke’s team was kicked around Old Trafford as England completed a 4-0 victory, the heaviest defeat of an Australian ODI side in any bilateral series in the 41-year history of limited overs internationals. The tourists were given still more reason to recall the tour unhappily by a hamstring injury to David Hussey, preventing him from fielding in the seven-wicket defeat. Clarke said the series reflected a wider problem in the team’s limited-overs cricket over the period of his captaincy, given that it had been preceded by battling series victories over Sri Lanka and South Africa away, before a triangular series win at home and a tied encounter in the Caribbean. However he would not countenance the result as a “wake-up call” to the national side generally, given how strongly the Test team’s results had improved over Clarke’s tenure. “It’s a completely different team, completely different format so I don’t want to compare the Test team with the one-day team,” Clarke said. “It’s a reminder, not a wake-up call. We knew through the Australian summer we weren’t playing anywhere near as good a cricket as we needed to be against Sri Lanka and India.”We went to the West Indies and just got over the line there so it’s not like this is the first series where we haven’t played as well as we’d like. Our one-day cricket hasn’t been as consistent as it needs to be if we want to stay at the top of the table. Hence how close the first, second, third and fourth are on the rankings points now. We’ve got a lot of work to do as a one-day team.”The ODI side has been used as a way of providing opportunities for numerous players to press their claims for other formats. Some like George Bailey have shown tentative progress, but others like Peter Forrest and Steve Smith are now struggling to justify their selection, developmental or otherwise.”It’s certainly not about opportunity. We’re giving plenty of guys the opportunity to grab it with both hands,” Clarke said. “There’s a few players that haven’t experienced these conditions so that was a good taste of it. Against good opposition in international sport you’ve just got to find a way to win, whether it’s with the bat, with the ball in the field. Good teams do that, they’ll be down or they’ll lose the first match of the series, but they’ll find a way to turn it around, and we haven’t been good enough to do that so that’s an area we have to improve.”We need to play better cricket. We need to sit down as a team and have a look at our performances over the last 12 months and areas we need to get better. It certainly wasn’t preparation. I thought our training was outstanding and we played some really good cricket in the couple of warm-up games but we have no excuses.”I think a lot of credit needs to go to England as well. They’ve outplayed us in all four matches, they’ve been very consistent, their bowlers have bowled with good patience and discipline and their batters have made runs. We haven’t done both. We didn’t have anybody make a big score as a batter, we lost a lot of early wickets throughout the series and we didn’t execute our skills as well as you need to.”
