Laxman happy with county stint

VVS Laxman, the Indian Test batsman, has returned from a successful county stint raring to go for the home series against Sri Lanka starting November. Laxman has said that he was pleased with his county form after not being scheduled to play competitive cricket from May to October.Laxman struck a super run of form during the English summer where he topped Lancashire’s first-class run tally with 857 runs in 11 matches at an average of 65.92, including four centuries. “At this point of my career, there is nothing like proving a point or two. My county performances show that I can play in any format and under any conditions,” he said on return to India. “All that I can say is that given the chance, I will be ready to perform for my country as I did for Lancashire.”Laxman also did well in the other two formats for Lancashire. In three Twenty20 Cup matches he was the top run-getter with 159 at 79.50. In four innings during the Pro40, he made 80 runs at 26.66. In the one Friends Provident Trophy game he played, Laxman made 54. Asked as to whether he was up for a return to one-day internationals, like Rahul Dravid, Laxman said: “It is for the national selectors to decide about my selection, for they are the best judges. I have nothing more to prove and I am really pleased with my performance for Lancashire this season.”Laxman, 34, was pleased to have been active for three months in England, after being apprehensive about the gap between the end of the IPL and the Indian domestic season, which began this week. “I can say that I stayed in touch with the game and stayed in the right frame of mind,” he said. “Playing in different places and in different conditions in various formats was really a wonderful experience and it was a great feeling to be part of the Lancashire dressing room atmosphere. I am ready for any challenge now.”Since playing their last Test in April, India are scheduled to host Sri Lanka for three Tests in India. That number, according to Laxman, was insufficient. “From a personal point of view, it is really disappointing that India will play only three Tests this year,” he said. “I hope the board will look into this issue seriously and do something.”Despite India’s poor form in the ICC Champions Trophy, Laxman backed MS Dhoni’s captaincy. “I enjoyed playing under him. I believe that both Dhoni and Gary Kirsten form a great combination. Let us not forget that Dhoni did determine the results of quite a few important matches in recent times.”

Conte ready for Romagnoli immediately

As per TuttoJuve24, some more news from Italy has come to light on yet another Serie A star Antonio Conte could now bring to Tottenham Hotspur in Alessio Romagnoli.

The Lowdown: Italian job…

Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici has finally landed his number one managerial target for Spurs nearly five months after talks for Conte broke down in the summer.

As confirmed by the club, ex-Chelsea boss, former Premier League winning-manager and four-time Scudetto champion Conte has taken over at Spurs – following on from the dismal eras of Portuguese duo Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho.

The 52-year-old comes to north London with much promise and is tipped to instil a winning mentality and transform Tottenham into a high-intensity pressing team (football.london).

He also comes with links to some of Serie A’s biggest stars as Spurs continue to be mentioned alongside the likes of Franck Kessie and Dusan Vlahovic with new names like Federico Chiesa also popping up in the Italian press.

Centre-backs like Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt are also being watched by Conte but TuttoJuve24 has now shared that AC Milan captain Romagnoli could feasibly join Spurs.

The Latest: Romagnoli could be tempted by Tottenham…

As per their information, Tottenham’s new boss is ‘ready to take’ two Juventus transfer targets ‘immediately’ in Vlahovic and Romagnoli.

The latter man, who was considering Turin as a possible destination, could now have his plans ‘changed’ by Spurs with this report hinting he could be tempted to join the club.

It is stated that Spurs will be spare ‘no expense’ in backing Conte and represent a ‘danger’ to Juve’s transfer plans.

The Verdict: Get it done?

The 26-year-old, valued at a meagre £18 million by Transfermarkt, could leave for free in the summer of 2022 due to his contract expiring and this report states that is when Spurs are most likely to swoop.

Given both Romagnoli and his agent, Mino Raiola, have currently stalled discussions over a new deal due to Milan wanting to cut his salary in half, this could put Paratici and Tottenham in a strong negotiating position to even make an attempt in Janaury.

It may be a wise move going by Romagnoli’s quality and our belief he would certainly add some steel and composure next to Cristian Romero.

Averaging a cool 88.9% pass accuracy out from the back over his league appearances this season, a higher number than any Spurs defender according to WhoScored, he has also been labelled a ‘great champion’ by England defender Fikayo Tomori (Corriere dello Sport via milannews.it).

The £106,000-per-week ace doesn’t exactly command a hefty pay packet either, perhaps indicating he is more than affordable from Tottenham’s perspective given his contract situation.

Southampton: Saints eye Sam Johnstone

Southampton have joined Tottenham in the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to The Sun.

The Lowdown: Forster to depart?

Ralph Hasenhuttl has Alex McCarthy, Fraser Forster and youngster Harry Lewis as options in goal on the south coast, although Forster, who has been on the books at St Mary’s since 2014, has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal.

Southampton are expecting to lose the 33-year-old at the end of the campaign, and it seems as if they already have a target in mind to bring in.

The Latest: Nixon’s claim

Alan Nixon of The Sun shared a story late on Saturday night claiming the Saints have joined Spurs and West Ham in the race for Johnstone’s services.

The West Brom goalkeeper, who shares the same agency as Che Adams, is also out of contract at the end of the season, but Southampton are willing to pay for the 28-year-old in a potential New Year deal instead of waiting until next summer.

The Verdict: Smart move?

Both McCarthy and Forster are over 30 years of age and earn a combined £120,000 per week, so bringing in Johnstone, who is on £32,500-a-week at The Hawthorns, could be a shrewd move.

He’s three years younger than McCarthy and five younger than Forster and also has Premier League and international experience.

The Saints are clearly admirers if they are willing to pay a fee for the Baggies star with so little time left to run on his contract, but it still may work out as a smart piece of business if they spend to bring him to St Mary’s.

In other news: Lots of Saints fans were excited over this piece of ‘great news’ in recent days

Forewarned means forearmed

West Indies’ stunning seven-wicket win over India on Friday has transformed the dynamics of Group E

The Preview by Andrew Miller13-Jun-2009Match factsSunday, June 14
Start time 1730 local (1630 GMT)Big PictureEngland will remember Yuvraj Singh’s assault when the two teams meet at Lord’s•Getty ImagesWell, that’s livened things up a bit. West Indies’ stunning seven-wicket win over India on Friday has transformed the dynamics of Group E, and left the holders facing what is, in effect, an elimination show-down with the hosts. On paper it ought not even to be close – when England and India last faced each other in a limited-overs contest, in India in November, a unprecedented 7-0 whitewash was only averted by the abandonment of the tour due to the Mumbai terror attacks.Nothing that England have done in this tournament to date gives much reason to believe they have a prayer of progressing any further. A laughable defeat against the Dutch was followed by a competent dismissal of a distracted Pakistan, but their humbling against South Africa on Thursday was a truer reflection of their standing. Quite simply, they were outclassed, rolled over for 111and routed by Jacques Kallis on cruise control.India, by contrast, were progressing pretty serenely (give or take the odd testy press conference) until their surprise derailment at the hands of Dwayne Bravo. They qualified comfortably from a weak group made up of Bangladesh and Ireland, and it’s possible they were caught unawares by the sudden step-up in class that West Indies presented.Whatever the reasons, forewarned means forearmed. The last time these two sides met in the World Twenty20, in Durban in September 2007, Yuvraj Singh strode into history with his brutalising of a young Stuart Broad, and India marched into the final stages as England skulked home early from yet another global tournament. Little we’ve witnessed thus far in 2009 suggests the story will be any different. But then again, shocks are part and parcel of this format, and any side containing an in-form Kevin Pietersen cannot be dismissed out of hand.Semi-final chancesA win for either team will obviously boost their chances of making it to the semis, but India have far more riding on this game than England. If India lose on Sunday, they are definitely out, since the winner of the England-West Indies game on Monday will join South Africa on two wins and knock India out even if they win their last game.If England lose, however, there is still a chance for them if they beat West Indies, and if South Africa beat India. In that case, South Africa will finish with three wins, while England, India and West Indies will all have one each, bringing net run rates into play.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
England: LWLLW
Up and down, up and down. England’s yo-yo performances demonstrate just how inexact their science is when it comes to Twenty20. Paul Collingwood said his team would carry on attacking despite their defeat against South Africa, but the best sides are able to adapt on the hoof.India: LWWLL
A brace of defeats in New Zealand earlier this year dented India’s overall record, but they have still won nine of their 15 T20Is dating back to December 2006.Watch out for…Yuvraj Singh’s astounding feat under the Durban floodlights was the unequivocal highlight of the last World Twenty20, as he battered Broad for six consecutive sixes. There has been mutual antipathy between Yuvraj and England ever since, compounded by the success his left-arm spin has enjoyed against Pietersen. With 67 from 43 balls in the West Indies defeat, he’s certainly in form ahead of the rematch.Ravi Bopara has been tipped by Sachin Tendulkar, no less, as a very “special” talent, and Indian audiences already know what he’s about, after he produced one of the finest innings of the IPL – 84 from 59 balls for King’s XI Punjab against Royal Challengers Bangalore. After two consecutive failures against Pakistan and South Africa, he’s due a return to form.Team newsAfter a false start against Netherlands, England seem to have settled upon their best eleven for this format, with Adil Rashid impressing as the second spinner, and Dimitri Mascarenhas taking the pace off the new ball. Despite crashing horribly at Trent Bridge, it’s hard to see how they can improve the team, short of shooing in Graham Napier for his international debut.England: (probable) 1 Ravi Bopara, 2 Luke Wright, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Dimitri Mascarenhas, 7 James Foster (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 James Anderson. The loss of Virender Sehwag was a blow to their big-hitting aspirations, but India still possess oodles of potent thwackers all the way down the order, even as far as Harbhajan Singh at No. 8. It’s unlikely they’ll be altering what was, up until Friday, a winning formula.India: (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, Pragyan OjhaStats and Trivia England and India have only played in one Twenty20 international to date – Yuvraj’s match in Durban, which finished up as 18-run win for India. Despite their habitual lack of success (seven victories in 18 matches) seven of the England players who contested that match are likely starters this time around. Six different Indian batsmen have struck 13 sixes between them so far in the tournament. England’s tally is eight.Quotes”We were able to raise the required run rate close to 10 runs per over, we were good at that, but he took the game away from us.”

“We’re not going to win by sitting back. Twenty20 cricket is about putting the opposition under pressure from ball one. We’ve got to make sure we have the attitude of ‘keep going for it’. We’re not going to get anywhere by being conservative .”

Watson wins battle with Symonds

Shane Watson and Andrew Symonds are two large, strong men, and like a pair of gunslingers in a western movie, this town ain’t big enough for them both

Brydon Coverdale at the SCG20-May-2009Shane Watson and Andrew Symonds are two large, strong men, and like a pair of gunslingers in a western movie, this town ain’t big enough for them both. During the 2006-07 Ashes, Symonds shot back into Australia’s Test team while Watson, his then Queensland team-mate and rival allrounder, was injured. Now it’s Watson who has gained a place for the return tour of England at the expense of Symonds.Australia’s selectors faced a tough decision on which allrounders to include in their 16-man squad. Watson and the incumbent Andrew McDonald were preferred ahead of Symonds, who in the past year has twice been stood down from the team over behavioural issues. It could mean the end of the Test road for Symonds, who turns 34 next month. But Watson was unequivocal when asked how he felt about shooting down his colleague’s Test dreams.”Good. It means I’m playing Test cricket and performing well,” Watson said. “It’s been an interesting battle between me and Andrew Symonds.”Initially I got my opportunity in the [2006-07] Ashes and unfortunately I got injured and he made the most of that opportunity that he got and has been performing well over the last couple of years. But of recent times he hasn’t helped himself in regards to what he’s been doing and I’ve just got to make the most of the opportunity that’s presented itself.”Watson has been chosen subject to fitness as he continues his recovery from a groin strain suffered during the series against Pakistan in the UAE, but he is not considered in any real doubt. Still, the latest injury was a setback for Watson, who had returned to the ODI side as a batsman only, having been diagnosed with back stress fractures during the home summer. That ended an 11-month injury-free run for Watson – the longest such period since the opening couple of years of his first-class career. He drew immense confidence from stringing together a complete tour of India last October, when he played all four Tests, and it reconfirmed in his mind that he did not want to be pigeonholed as a limited-overs specialist.”It was massive. Those ten or 11 months that I had from the IPL through the West Indies tour and then on to the India series as well gave me a massive amount of confidence to know that I can get through,” he said. “There’s been a few setbacks after that but it’s just finding the perfect balance of what I’m trying to do.”The opportunities that I had in the Test series in India just fuelled it even more to understand that Test cricket is the absolute ultimate in every single way. Mentally, technically and physically it pushes the boundaries so to be part of the biggest Test series for Australia is going to be so exciting.”The chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch praised Watson’s ability to bat anywhere in the top six and his quality fast bowling. Neither he nor the captain Ricky Ponting felt that Symonds’ Test career was over, but that Watson was simply the better option for the balance of the team in England.”I suppose Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson were competing for the same spot,” Hilditch said. “I would class them both as batters who give us quality overs at their best, but on this occasion Shane has been preferred because in the selectors’ view he adds great balance to the team.”Shane was in extremely good form before his minor injury and in addition he gives us quality pace bowling and he’s capable of batting anywhere in the top six. We think he’s a very good selection for the Ashes tour.”But although Watson has edged out Symonds he will also be competing for a place in the starting XI with McDonald, who has played all of Australia’s past four Tests. One rival has been outgunned, but another has sneaked into town.

Liverpool fans slam Diogo Jota v Palace

During Liverpool’s encounter with Crystal Palace at Anfield, many Reds supporters were less than impressed with the first half performance of Diogo Jota.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are seeking to maintain their solid start to the campaign, coming up against Patrck Vieira’s south Londoners. Liverpool are looking to put last season behind them and get back in among the Premier League’s elite, with a largely regrettable 2020/2021 campaign curtailed by many injury issues.

Today, the Reds took a 1-0 lead into half-time courtesy of Sadio Mane, but what came before was Jota missing a plethora of first half chances, including one from inside the six-yard box towards the end of the first half.

As a result, it’s little wonder that some Liverpool fans were raging with his showing on social media, with one even branding the 24-year-old a ‘liability’.

Check out some of their verdicts on his performance so far below.

Celtic: Anton McElhone joins Hoops

Celtic have brought in Anton McElhone as the club’s new head of sports science, report The Glasgow Evening Times.

The Lowdown: McElhone profiled

McElhone is 40 years of age and left Championship side Morton back in March following a stint as caretaker manager.

The Scot previously worked as an assistant at Bradford City and was also a fitness coach at Tottenham and American side New England Revolution.

The 4-2-3-1 style coach appears to have become Ange Postecoglou’s first backroom staff appointment, although the Hoops have yet to confirm the news on their official website.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-13/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Celtic arrival

According to The Glasgow Evening Times, McElhone has made the move to Parkhead and takes over from Jack Nayler, who left the club for RB Leipzig back in the summer.

Well-known Celtic page @Celtic1967_com said ‘it is believed the appointment will help the players meet Ange’s high fitness demands.’

The Verdict: Much-needed

Frank McAvennie recently labelled it ‘a joke’ that Postecoglou was yet to bring in his own staff, so hopefully, the Hoops boss was involved in bringing McElhone to Glasgow.

Postecoglou admitted back in July that the club needed more sports science staff to help the squad through the season, and it seems as if they have bolstered that department with an under-the-radar move for McElhone.

You’d expect the pair to work closely at Lennoxtown, and the main aim could be to increase the fitness of the Celtic squad ahead of a busy campaign.

In other news: Celtic now working on ‘top’ transfer without McKay; 48 y/o says he ‘would shine’ in Glasgow.

Australia call up Henriques for Twenty20

Moises Henriques, the New South Wales allrounder, has won a surprise call-up into Australia’s Twenty20 squad for the match against New Zealand in Sydney on Sunday

Moises Henriques, the New South Wales allrounder, has won a surprise call-up into Australia’s Twenty20 squad for the match against New Zealand in Sydney on Sunday. David Warner has also been recalled to a side that will be led by Michael Clarke with Ricky Ponting to take a rest after he talked the selectors out of an extended break during the Chappell-Hadlee Series. The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been rewarded after less than a year as a full-time member of the team and has been handed the vice-captaincy in the absence of Michael Hussey, who will also be rested. It ends a remarkable run for Hussey, who has not missed an international match in any format since September 2006.”Given the high workload of Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey since the Indian Test series in October we have decided, in consultation with these players, it is appropriate they miss this game,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “With a hectic and competitive South African campaign departing the day after this match, we felt this option was best in the interest of the players’ workload management.”As well as resting two senior batsmen a break the selectors were also keen to push for the development of several young players in the lead-up to this year’s ICC World Twenty20. Henriques, 22, has already been signed up by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, spent time with the ODI squad in Darwin in September and played against the New Zealanders recently as part of the Prime Minister’s XI. He conceded 70 runs from ten overs and hit two sixes in his 13-ball 20 as the visitors were beaten by six wickets.”The national selection panel regards Moises as an exciting young player with the all-round ability to play a role in the World Twenty20,” Hilditch said. “We recently included him in the PM’s XI match against New Zealand where he played exceptionally well and we are hoping this opportunity will help him to continue his development.”But Henriques has clearly been chosen on potential having not had the breakthrough state season he was hoping for. He learnt of his selection while playing for the New South Wales Second XI at Melbourne’s Junction Oval after being relegated following five Sheffield Shield appearances this summer in which he has a highest score of 45 and picked up three wickets, and his limited-overs form hasn’t been much better.”I was extremely surprised and shocked,” Henriques told the . “I was speechless for 15 minutes. Playing in a state second XI game there is a massive contrast, but I’m really looking forward to the opportunity. I haven’t had the year I wanted to have. It’s been inconsistent and disappointing, but with every day comes an opportunity.”Callum Ferguson, the South Australia batsman who has played Australia’s past three ODIs, is also in line for his Twenty20 international debut. The inclusion of Warner means he will have to wait for a potential first-class debut; he was hoping to be named in the New South Wales side for their Sheffield Shield match starting on the weekend.Sunday will feature a Twenty20 double-header at the SCG, with the Australian women’s side taking on their New Zealand counterparts before the men’s game. It will be Australia’s last official game till they begin their defence of the Women’s World Cup, which kicks off in Australia on March 7.Australia Twenty20 squad Michael Clarke (capt), David Warner, Brad Haddin (wk), David Hussey, Cameron White, Callum Ferguson, Adam Voges, Moises Henriques, James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Nathan Bracken, Ben Hilfenhaus.
