Glasgow Rangers: Andrei Kanchelskis wants to manage in Scotland in the future

Former Glasgow Rangers winger Andrei Kanchelskis has said that he would one day like to return to Scotland in a managerial role.

The ex-Russia international signed from Fiorentina for £5.5m in 1998, spending four years at Ibrox. During that time, he won the Scottish Premiership on two occasions, the Scottish Cup three times and the Scottish League Cup twice, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking about his future as a manager, he said:

“My aim was always to become a manager after I finished playing and I would like to return to Scotland to manage.

“I’ve made sure I have the right education and built my CV with the clubs I have managed, which has been very tough but I felt was important to give me the skills I need to manage a team in the UK.

“Now I have my UEFA Pro license, and with the experience I have, I believe I’m one step closer to managing in British football.”

So far, Kanchelskis’ managerial journey has seen him manage a host of clubs in his homeland and in Latvia, as well as Ubzek side Navbahor Namangan, where he is currently in charge. He is also without a major trophy to date – it is not exactly the kind of record that will leave clubs desperate to give him the top job.

Having said that, Steven Gerrard had no experience before he stepped into the Ibrox hot seat and he has not done too badly since he was appointed in 2018. Given that he does not quite have the playing pedigree of the former Liverpool man, Kanchelskis may need to prove himself a bit more before the ‘Gers would consider him, but it is not impossible to picture him in the role in the future.

‘Gers fans, can you see Kanchelskis being a future first team manager at Ibrox? Let us know what you think by commenting below!

Everton fans react to links with River Plate striker Rafael Santos Borre

Everton are supposedly in the market for a new forward in January with River Plates’ Rafael Santos Borre being lined up by the club.

According to Argentine source Publimento, via FOX Sport, the Toffees are in the race to sign the 24-year-old who could leave the club after scoring in the Copa Libertadores final last weekend.

Since then, journalist Carlos Antonio Velez has confirmed (via Sport Witness) that there’s been a bid for the striker in the region of around €15m (£12.7m).

Supporters of Everton have since taken to Twitter to discuss the links and they didn’t seem overly enamoured or excited about a potential deal.

One made reference to work permit issues that could occur while another joked he’d arrive and play out of position at right-back.

Another fan failed to see the point of signing another striker when they already have so many at their disposal.

The tweeter has a point too. After all, Richarlison has played upfront while they also have Cenk Tosun, Moise Kean and Dominic Calvert-Lewin among their ranks.

Borre has scored seven times this term in 11 games which puts him ahead of anyone already at Everton.

Here’s some of the reaction.

Meanwhile, here is what Everton fans have been saying about someone who could replace Marco Silva…

Man City’s defensive summer transfer blunder exposed against Liverpool

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Liverpool have taken a massive step towards a maiden Premier League title win after beating Manchester City 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. The defeat leaves the champions nine points behind the Reds in the table after just 12 games and places their credentials this season into serious doubt.

Throughout the game, Pep Guardiola’s men were second best across the pitch, but one area which was exposed in particular was central defence. The injury to Aymeric Laporte has caused problems at the back for City, with the club immediately losing to Norwich and then falling to defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers not long after.

Now, after the loss to Liverpool, it is clear – if it wasn’t already – that the champions made a massive error in not recruiting at the back in the summer window. The loss of Vincent Kompany was always going to be a miss, with the City legend’s 360 appearances helping collect four Premier League titles.

This has left Guardiola with only Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and Laporte as his natural central defensive options, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis only just being promoted and Eric Garcia hugely inexperienced at 18.

Otamendi has struggled this season and was largely at fault for the defeat to Norwich, whilst Stones has looked lost without the Frenchman beside him. Last season at Anfield both Stones and Laporte were in incredible form and managed to keep the Reds at bay.

This time around, however, Stones’ performance simply shined a light on why City should have signed a centre-back in the summer.

The club’s failure to recruit a new defensive talent could ultimately prove to be their downfall as they bid to secure a hat-trick of Premier League titles.

Injuries happen all the time and as unfortunate as Laporte’s injury is, it is not exactly a surprise. Simply put, it is poor anticipation from City in that regard, who have clearly shown down the years that money is not an issue.

Whether the manager will spend in the January window remains to be seen.

However, he most definitely needs to open conversations with Txiki Begiristain about signing a new man at the back, regardless of whether he arrives in the mid-season window or next summer.

Man Utd fans hail Marcos Rojo after impressive UEL display against Partizan

After looking like he was heading for the Old Trafford exit door earlier in the summer, Marcos Rojo appears to have turned his Manchester United career well and truly around.

The Argentina international is featuring more prominently in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for the first-team, and has already made eight appearances across all competitions this season.

Against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night in the Europa League, the 29-year-old was at his rugged best, making two interceptions, two clearances and one block as per Sofascore.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer hailed his defender for his “excellent” performance, and insisted the display proved exactly why the Red Devils kept him.

After seeing his display, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the forming Sporting CP ace.

Many Red Devils supporters praised his fine performance, and insisted he has really begun to produce consistently good performances for the side.

Manchester City: Fans heap praise on Phil Foden after immediate Champions League impact

Phil Foden made an instant impact from the bench in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb with a goal in the 95th minute on Tuesday night. Indeed, the Stockport-born creative midfielder has been talked up by his club manager since carrying England’s under-17s to World Cup glory and, judging from the reaction below, a lot of City fans are right behind him.

Still, it’s been a frustrating season for Foden so far, who has had to bide his time at the Etihad Stadium amid the glittering array of talent on offer. In fact, he’s played just 10 Premier League minutes all season, as per WhoScored.

Furthermore, pundits such as talkSPORT’s Tony Cottee have claimed he needs to be sent out on loan, but it seems the 19-year-old has complete faith in Pep Guardiola to bring him into one of the strongest, if not the strongest, team in Europe as he remains on the sidelines.

If he does breakthrough, he’ll be the first player from City’s new £250m academy to fully establish himself in the starting 11 and, for a lot of City fans, the fact he’s from Greater Manchester should make it all that much sweeter.

After the performance, Foden posted a photo of himself hugging Raheem Sterling with the caption ‘Things you love to see’, and City fans showed just how much they’re backing the youngster.

Real Madrid can’t rush into Xabi Alonso decision

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Real Madrid are not exactly enjoying the best of times.

They were thumped 3-0 by PSG in the Champions League earlier this week and that result came off the back of an underwhelming start to life in La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane’s first four La Liga matches left a lot to be desired, as Real registered two wins and two draws.

And precisely for those reasons, the latest reports coming out of Mundo Deportivo about a potential heir to the Frenchman’s throne don’t really come as a surprise.

The Catalan outlet state that Florentino Perez, Los Blancos’ president, is considering Xabi Alonso as a candidate to take over if Zidane is dispensed with.

Of course, there are arguments for both sides of the discussion – Alonso, for all his pedigree and reputation as a player, is still fairly inexperienced as a coach. He spent some time with Real Madrid’s youth crop back in the 2018/19 season, and now, he’s the current manager of Real Sociedad B, a team he’s led in a total of four matches so far.

By all means, that’s not a sublime resume.

The other side of the coin is the shiny one, though: he’s ambitious, he’s got the character, good history as a player, especially while donning the white kit of the Galacticos – he won La Liga and the Champions League – and most importantly, Perez likes him a lot, as Mundo Deportivo reveal. These are all things that a viable Real Madrid coach needs to have.

But “don Perez” also has to be patient with him.

If it’s really Alonso he wants, it needs to happen at the right time – not too soon and not too late. At the moment, we’re still in the “too soon” area.

Real need an experienced coach to guide them through choppy waters and Alonso is not there just yet, even if he is slowly approaching the point where he can be considered as a viable option for a club like Los Blancos.

Right now, Perez simply can’t afford another failed project; giving Alonso the reins would simply be too much too soon, and will only reduce the chances of him being at the helm when it is the right time, when the right squad is in place and he’s accumulated the right level of experience.

Perhaps, though, it can happen at some point in the future.

Huddersfield Town appointment lauded by Sam Allardyce

[ad_pod ]Sam Allardyce has spoken.Since their relegation from the Premier League, things haven’t improved much for Huddersfield Town. And when we say that, what we mean is their return to the second-tier has been utterly miserable.Sat in joint-last place in the Championship and already one manager down for the season, having sacked former boss Jan Siewert, who was admittedly a bizarre appointment in the first place, the Terriers needed a hero (or two).Watch Huddersfield Town Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Fortunately, that’s just what they’ve been given in the form of dynamic duo Danny Cowley and his brother, Nicky.

The former Lincoln Town men will inherit Siewert’s faltering squad and attempt to guide them towards their first victory of the season when they meet Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

The Owls have only recently appointed a new boss themselves, ex-Birmingham man Garry Monk, so this could be a tasty affair.

Speaking to talkSPORT, rescue mission specialist Allardyce reacted to the John Smith Stadium new boys…

Positive sounding stuff from Big Sam.
