In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 332 appearances for Newcastle United, can not understand why the Magpies are persisting with their split striker system and believes it has Graeme jones’ fingerprints all over it.

Lee, whose son Elliot Lee played for Luton Town under Jones, believes it is the assistant manager who is behind this new system which he claims almost got the Hatters relegated under his guidance.

Newcastle have had to cope without Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron because of injury, which has not helped their faltering system which looks more and more peculiar and ineffective every game.

Speaking on Jones’ split striker system and how Newcastle don’t have the calibre of player to carry it out, Lee told FFC exclusively:

“It’s the Graeme Jones way of playing and that’s what he does. He did it at Luton and almost took them down playing this way.

“I don’t know why he does it. I suppose if you’ve got the right players you could possibly do it but for me, if you’re playing Dwight Gayle, you’ve got to play him up front.

“Playing Dwight Gayle wide is like playing, and I’m not comparing him to Shearer I never would, but you wouldn’t play him out wide. I just don’t get why, with the players, we’ve got, why we’re playing like that.”

Steve Bruce confirmed that this is the way Newcastle prepare and play now so, that’s how they’ll set up in their most important game of the season on Saturday against Brighton.

Since Callum Wilson picked up a hamstring injury against Southampton Newcastle’s top scorer has been Jamaal Lascelles as their final third woes continue.

Nenê viveu neste domingo um dia atípico. Fez mais um gol pelo Vasco, mas também desperdiçou um pênalti, situação que ele não passava desde 2011, ainda pelo PSG, da França. O erro custou caro, já que fez com que a partida diante do Volta Redonda, em São Januário, terminasse em 1 a 1. O empate deixou o Vasco fora da liderança da Taça Guanabara para o Fluminense e adiou a confirmação da vaga para a semifinal do Carioca, apesar de ter mantido a invencibilidade – agora de 18 jogos.

Sem Julio dos Santos e Jorge Henrique, suspensos, e Riascos, liberado para acompanhar o nascimento do filho, Jorginho colocou o Vasco com Bruno Gallo no meio e Caio Monteiro no ataque. O entrosamento não foi o dos melhores, com muitos erros de passe e marcação. Tanto que a primeira chance clara de gol foi do Volta Redonda, em chute de Vinicius Pacheco na trave de Martin Silva.

Para corrigir estes erros ainda no primeiro tempo, Jorginho sacou Bruno Gallo e colocou Yago Pikachu, visando dar maior qualidade no meio. E a tentativa deu certo. O Vasco passou a preencher os espaços até então vazios com maior facilidade e chegou ao gol aos 44 minutos. Pikachu colocou com perfeição Madson em profundidade. Ele achou Nenê na área, que não desperdiçou para fazer o sexto gol em 12 jogos no ano.

Na volta do intervalo, o Vasco manteve o ritmo da segunda metade da etapa inicial, com menos erros e mais chances. A busca pelo segundo gol foi tanta que aos 16 minutos do segundo tempo, Yago Pikachu sofreu falta na grande área, e o árbitro marcou pênalti. Nenê foi para a cobrança e Mota defendeu. Primeiro pênalti desperdiçado por Nenê no Vasco em dez cobranças. A torcida, na hora, o ovacionou mesmo assim.

O Volta Redonda continuou na luta e chegou ao empate aos 28 minutos. Vinicius Pacheco cobrou falta, Rodrigo se atrapalhou e Niltinho, livre, mandou a bola para o gol. O Vasco até foi para o tudo ou nada em busca da vitória mais uma vez, mas não conseguiu. Agora, é manter o ânimo e esquecer o dia atípico de Nenê.

At long last, there is a reason to be positive at Molineux. Wolves’ 0-0 draw with Chelsea may not have been the most vibrant affair but it reinstalled confidence in Nuno Santo’s team.

For the first time in 13 league matches they kept a clean sheet as they ensured Thomas Tuchel’s first evening in the Premier League was a drab affair.

Wolves’ performance at Stamford Bridge was much like the steel they showed last month at Old Trafford when they took on Manchester United. For the most part, the defence were superb but unlike against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, they held on this time.

Nuno’s men came for a point and they reaped the rewards from that game plan as they stifled Chelsea’s attack.

It was no surprise to see that Wolves’ first clean sheet in the Premier League since October came when they played with a three-back. They brought things back to basics and it showed in their rigid display.

But while the likes of Conor Coady, Max Kilman and Willy Boly were all supreme, there was one performer who didn’t live up to the rest of his teammate’s performances.

That happened to be Rayan Ait-Nouri. The left-back was given a torrid time and endured a nightmare evening, one that ended in him being substituted at the break with an injury.

It’s not entirely known how long the 19-year-old will be out for but after this outing, he certainly needs a period of reflection.

The Frenchman was rather suspect defensively and was torn to shreds by Callum Hudson-Odoi who was rampant in the first half. The Chelsea winger completed 91% of his passes in the opening 45 minutes, performing two key passes and attempting seven crosses. Time and time again he had the beating of Ait-Nouri.

The defender was terrorised constantly and only managed to win 25% of his duels on the night. He made just one tackle, emphasising the joy Hudson-Odoi achieved against him.

Ait-Nouri disappointed in the final third too. He completed only seven passes – the worst on the pitch for Wolves’ starting XI – and failed with each of the two dribbles he attempted. Clearly, the teenager was reeling from the bombardment down Chelsea’s right flank.

He was fortunate that the Blues flanker didn’t create anything of note, but this was a lesson in how ruthless the Premier League can be for Ait-Nouri.

Currently on loan from Angers in France, the diminutive full-back will have to do a lot more in order to earn a permanent contract. This was not a night where Nuno will have been very pleased with his display.

That being said, we don’t like to see him injured and we hope he returns to fitness as soon as possible.

AND in other news, Wolves could find their new Costa with swoop for 87-cap flop, he won’t cost a penny…

وأضاف: “الأهلي هو البيت الكبير بالنسبة لجميع اللاعبين، وأتمنى المنافسة مع الفريق على جميع البطولات في الموسم الجاري”.

وتابع: “النادي الأهلي موفر كل شيء لموسيماني، والإجهاد فرق معنا في الموسم الماضي، والموسم الحالي المدرب أمامه اختيارات كثيرة جدًا، وهو يعطي فرصة المشاركة لكل اللاعبين”.

ورد على الأنباء التي ترددت عن احتمالية رحليه عن الأهلي بعد الموسم الحالي قائلًا: “أترك الأمور لربنا، ولكن كعقد هذا آخر موسم لي مع الأهلي، ولو النادي طلب التجديد لي فلا توجد لدي مشكلة، وأنا راضٍ عن نفسي وعما فعلته مع الفريق وعن مسيرتي معه”.

وأردف: “من يصل للأهلي صعب أن يلعب في مكان آخر، وأمنية حياتي أن أعتزل داخل صفوفه”.

واختتم: “من المؤكد أن أي لاعب يحزن بسبب عدم مشاركته بشكل اساسي ولكن يجب الحفاظ على رصيدك وتاريخك مع النادي وإخراج حزنك في التدريبات”.

Jogo no sábado, folga no domingo e treino forte na segunda-feira. Foi assim que o Santos começou a semana. Após o empate por 1 a 1 com o São Bernardo, na estreia do Paulistão, na Vila, os jogadores do Peixe se reapresentaram nesta segunda e retomaram o trabalho com bola.

O que chamou a atenção foi a presença de um jogador até então desconhecido, que se assemelhava fisicamente a Geuvânio. Mas de perto, ficou clara a diferença entre o lateral-esquerdo Edilson Ourinho e o atacante que deixou o Peixe recentemente para auar no futebol chinês.

Ourinho é lateral-esquerdo de origem e faz parte do Santos B (sub-23). Assim como o volante Gregore, ele foi chamado para complementar o grupo, fato corriqueiro com o técnico Dorival Júnior.

وارتبط فريق تشافي هيرنانديز بأنباء التفاوض مع ستيرلينج، وعلّق جوارديولا على ذلك خلال المؤتمر الصحفي الخاص بمباراة مانشستر سيتي وإيفرتون والمقرر خوضها يوم الأحد في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

وقال جوارديولا: “لا تسألني من الآن فصاعدا حتى اليوم الأخير من النافذة حول الانتقالات لأنني لن أجيب”.

Sunderland are back in action this evening as they head to League Two strugglers Oldham Athletic for the second round of the EFL Trophy.

Lee Johnson was only appointed on Saturday afternoon, and was thrown straight into the mire, though his presence in the dugout couldn’t inspire the Black Cats to a victory as Wigan Atheltic ended a ten-game winless run at the Stadium of Light.

Ahead of tonight’s fixture, the 39-year-old claimed he would use the encounter as an opportunity to implement his ideas, so there may not be too many alterations to the starting XI.

Although, there will be some changes in personnel as the likes of academy shot-stopper Anthony Patterson and Wolves loanee Dion Sanderson are set to be handed starts whilst Charlie Wyke is in line to feature.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper replaces Lee Burge between the sticks in the first change from Saturday’s defeat.

Central defensive pairing Bailey Wright and Tom Flanagan are set to keep their places, but Johnson will be forced into another change at left-back after Denver Hume was confirmed to be out for the rest of December.

We could see Callum McFadzean come in as the only alternative whilst Sanderson replaces Conor McLaughlin on the other flank.

In midfield, there could be some rare opportunities for the likes of George Dobson, taking the defensive midfield role from veteran Grant Leadbitter, as well as young 19-year-old sensation Daniel Neill, who may start alongside Josh Scowen further up the pitch.

Neill has started all three matches in the EFL Trophy thus far, but is yet to feature in League One this term.

Chris Maguire is another who keeps his place amongst the line-up but there are two more changes.

At left-wing we could see Jack Diamond come in as Aiden McGeady isn’t fit enough to start back-to-back matches in quick succession whilst the aforementioned Wyke replaces Will Grigg in the attack.

Predicted XI: Patterson; McFadzean, Wright, Flanagan, Sanderson; Dobson, Scowen, Neill; Diamond, Maguire, Wyke.

AND in other news, Sunderland could prosper immensely under Kristjaan Speakman…
