ScorecardSussex’s bid for a hat-trick of 40 overs titles remains on course afterthey beat Group A rivals Lancashire by 40 runs at Hove.Boosted by a one-day best 91 from wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd, which included five successive boundaries off Lancashire skipper Glenn Chapple, Sussex made 245 for 7 after winning the toss.Lancashire made a positive start to their reply and had 86 on the board after 13 overs despite losing openers Paul Horton and Stephen Moore. But Sussex’s spinners Monty Panesar and Ollie Rayner then took control andLancashire lost three wickets in four overs, two of them to run outs. And there was no way back from 118 for 5 in the 22nd over after SouthAfrican Ashwell Prince was brilliantly stumped by Hodd when he came down the pitch and was beaten by Rayner’s well-flighted offbreak.Luke Sutton and Stephen Parry added 50 in seven overs for the seventh wicket but Rana Naved-ul-Hasan returned to york Parry and Daren Powell, leaving Sutton undefeated on 31 and his side 205 for 9 from 37.5 overs with Kyle Hogg unable to bat because of a wrist injury.Earlier, Hodd had taken the form he had shown in last week’s Championshipmatch, when he made 109, into the one-day format to give Sussex’s innings some impetus.Sussex’s top four had all got starts without going on but Hodd, using his crease to make room for an array of improvised shots, helped Robin Martin-Jenkins add 86 in ten overs for the fifth wicket. It included a terrific blitz against Chapple whom he struck for five successive fours in the 37th over as Sussex plundered 41 runs from the power-play.Hodd was bowled by Kyle Hogg in the 38th over making room to hit through the leg side for 91 from 65 balls – more than double his previous one-day best of 42 – which included ten fours and a pulled six off Oliver Newby that had spectators in the pavilion scattering for cover.Horton and Moore gave Lancashire a great start with 30 runs off the first three overs but Moore top-edged a pull off Naved and Horton was pinned byMartin-Jenkins as he played across the line. They were restricted to 27 runs off their Powerplay and their innings began to unravel when Croft was run out by Prior’s direct hit from mid-on in the 18th over.In the next over Mark Chilton failed to recover his ground in time to beatPanesar’s throw from midwicket and Lancashire were heading for their thirddefeat in four games in the competition.

Ian Bell and Tim Bresnan earn England narrow lead

Ian Bell’s classy 138 wrestled England a narrow advantage in the second Test after Bangladesh’s hopes were deflated by poor umpiring decisions and gritty batting

Ian Bell’s classy 138 wrestled England a narrow advantage in the second Test after Bangladesh’s hopes were deflated by poor umpiring decisions and gritty batting. Bell was supported by a fluent 62 from Matt Prior and a battling 76 from Tim Bresnan who batted through the final two sessions to remain unbeaten at the close. What ended a lacklustre day started with real tension when Jonathan Trott was dismissed in the third over. His torturous effort last night heaped pressure on his batting partners but he was unlucky to be out to a ball that trickled back off his forearm on to off stump. It was an important strike and left England teetering on the brink of embarrassment until Bell revived their hopes.Watchful but untroubled throughout he has transformed his reputation as a soft-centred scorer of easy runs to one of England’s steeliest batsmen this winter. His 10th Test hundred is the first time he has passed three figures without a team-mate doing the same before him in the innings and is a mark of how far he has come since being dropped after England’s 54-all-out calamity in Jamaica last year. Dripping with talent he feathered the ball around the ground at will, reaching three figures in typically deft style, gliding Rubel Hossain for four behind point.Bell’s average against Bangladesh continues to be stratospheric, although plummeted to a mere 244 when he was finally dismissed for 138. Unlike his runs in the first Test this innings was crucial, guiding England out of trouble and setting up a chance of victory. It’s the style of knock that makes him appear like a natural No. 3, a hole the selectors have longingly looked at Bell to fill, but given his success down the order they will be reluctant to tamper. It could have all been different for Bangladesh had they not been denied three decisions at crucial moments. With Shakib Al Hassan asphyxiating England at one end and Rubel finding incisive reverse-swing at the other, Prior was on 7 when Rubel snaked one into his pads and trapped him bang in front. However, Tony Hill thought otherwise and Prior made it count. After struggling for runs early on the second new ball broke the shackles and Prior went on to share an enterprising 98-run stand with Bell. Shakib, much like his opposite number, has made some curious decisions through the series. He virtually ignored his two offspinners, Naeem Islam and Mahmudullah, instead stubbornly sticking to Abdul Razzak’s innocuous left-arm spin. Razzak was poor on the second day but was again given the new ball. He repeatedly erred in length and line and allowed Prior to canter his way to an 83-ball fifty. It was only a rash swipe from Prior, looking for a third boundary in an over over off Shakib, that allowed Bangladesh a glimpse at a first-innings lead as they saw Bresnan wondering out at No. 7 ahead of Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad with the deficit still 147. Bresnan should have departed on 5 when Shakib found an inside edge that popped up off the pad to silly point, yet once more the decision was turned down and the home side never really recovered.Across the two Tests and the earlier one-day series Bangladesh have endured the worst of the decisions. It’s difficult for a side used to losing to see opportunities denied and it was no surprise when, seeing the chance of a rare win disappearing, Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, grow increasingly agitated. Firstly he charged into the umpires’ room and later, when an lbw appeal against Bell was turned out, he was seen gesticulating at the boundary edge. It was the kind of passion that David Lloyd used to show in his time as England coach and Siddons’ frustration was understandable.Bangladesh really flagged as the day wore on, revealing their inexperience as the fielding descended into farce at times and the intent all but disappearing. Bresnan picked off the runs that were available on a pitch designed for utter tedium. He’ll make harder Test runs but a maiden fifty, coming at a time England needed them will be a useful nudge to the selectors when Ashes fever heats up later in the year.Bangladesh showed more heart in the final session with Rubel, in particular, running in hard in unforgiving conditions. England once again favoured caution over adventure, working the ball around and being content to drift along without showing the flair needed to be ruthless. Shakib toiled all day, recalling yesteryear with 27 maidens, and was rewarded when Bell skied a slog-sweep to midwicket.Shortly before the close, Bangladesh finally had some luck when Bresnan drilled a drive back at Shakib, who deflected it onto the stumps to run out Graeme Swann at the non-striker’s end and Broad was out lbw to the underused Mahmudullah. Bresnan ended 26 short of a maiden hundred and England will need to extend their narrow to give themselves before trying to extract Bangladesh for a second time on this very docile surface and, once again, there will be a huge onus on Swann.

Gardner-Hickman must start against Cardiff

Taylor Gardner-Hickman has been having quite a week after celebrating his 20th birthday as well as signing a new contract with West Brom on the same day.

The Albion academy graduate secured a four-and-a-half year deal with the club after making a great impression on Valerien Ismael and the West Brom fans.

Speaking after signing his contract, Gardner-Hickman said: “I’m absolutely delighted. This is my boyhood club. I’ve been here since I was seven and to finally achieve a long-term contract is a dream come true.

“I’ve been working really hard and I was hoping that one day my chance would come. Thankfully it came and I’ve been fortunate enough to be around the squad for a while now.”

The youngster has displayed some impressive performances for the Baggies’ first team this season, especially in the game against Reading a few weeks ago, where SofaScore gave him the highest player rating (8.3) of anyone in Ismael’s side.

According to the website, in that match alone, Gardner-Hickman recorded an 89% pass accuracy, with more touches on the ball than any other midfielder, and won 11 out of his 17 duels.

Ismael has been one of the first to sing the youngster’s praises, calling him “fearless” after his outstanding contribution whilst stepping up to the first team as he said: “He represents exactly what we want to see from young players. He’s hungry, he has desire, he’s fearless. He also has a lot of quality.

“After Dara O’Shea, I think he is the second one with the same profile and I’m delighted to be able to work with him in the years to come.”

Albion will take on their first fixture of 2022 tomorrow against Cardiff City at The Hawthorns, and we’re sure the homegrown talent will be eager to come in for his first start since that impressive outing against Reading three weeks ago.

It could be the perfect opportunity for Gardner-Hickman to get stuck into the second half of the season, and if he gets his chance this weekend, he could be a game-changer from full-back with his all-action play. Indeed, Albion have failed to win or even score since his last start for the club.

The club believe he has what it takes to succeed by offering him a new contract in recent days; now it’s over to Ismael to place his trust in the 20-year-old and back up the aforementioned glowing praise.

Hauritz turns from optional extra to essential

Nathan Hauritz is almost doing it all for Australia. He exceeded expectations during the Ashes, has become the essential offspinner in the one-day arena, coped with Sachin Tendulkar in full flight and helped win the Champions League Twenty20 for New South Wales with one brave flighted ball to Kieron Pollard. Those experiences have turned Hauritz from a figure of fun into a respected operator and the only thing he needs to polish his resume is a consistent run in the Test side. Prior to England he was picked because there was no one else, but since then he has been chosen because the side needs him. The only omissions were Leeds, when the pitch was green and Australia won in three days, and The Oval. How the selectors and team management misread the surface in south London and ruled out a spinner ranks alongside Clarrie Grimmett missing the 1938 England tour as one of Australian cricket’s greatest slow-bowling mysteries.Hauritz had carried a sore heel through the series and it had deteriorated slightly, but there was “no way in the world it would have stopped me bowling”. Instead Australia went with four quicks, Marcus North delivered 44 overs of part-timers, Graeme Swann, England’s specialist, took eight wickets and the hosts regained the urn.Being overlooked for that game ensures Hauritz will play at the Gabba on Thursday because the selectors won’t want to put themselves through the doubt and pain of relying on an all-pace attack. It would be no surprise if the outlook lasted all summer.”It would be good,” Hauritz said. “I’m in control of that, to play back-to-back Tests. If I bowl well in this one, the next one comes up.” His cricket journey has taught him not to look far ahead, but his improvement is winning him many admirers.Ricky Ponting is much more comfortable with Hauritz in his line-up and wants him to grab the spinning role for this series and beyond. “I’ve been really impressed with how he’s gone about his cricket over the last 12 months almost, his performances in the early Test matches of the Ashes series were very good,” he said. “They probably exceeded some of our expectations on the way we thought he could bowl, so that was a real positive.”His one-day cricket has been outstanding, he’s always been a very good one-day bowler anyway, and we want to keep developing him as a Test bowler. He’ll get a good opportunity to do that over the next few days.”Shane Warne judges players on how they develop and is pleased with the direction Hauritz is moving, calling him “the star of the Ashes series”. “When he first started playing for Australia to now he has improved, so I think he’s doing a pretty good job and I think he’ll bowl well out here during the Test. It’s a really nice place to bowl spin in Test matches.”Hauritz isn’t as glowing in his appraisal of the surface and wants to remind supporters how some of his predecessors have gone. “The hardest thing that the public forgets is we have had Murali and Harbhajan over here and they’re the two best [offspinners] in the world for me,” he said. “Those guys have hardly done anything at all on Australian wickets. The Gabba can be a tough place to bowl, the bounce is so true, it doesn’t move off, and the batsmen basically wait on you all day.”If there is a little bit of turn he will be happier and will be able to aim more easily for catches to the slips and close-in fielders. The West Indies line-up also includes a lengthy list of left-handers, including the captain Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash. Hauritz is excited by the prospect of bowling to them but remains grounded. “It’s definitely a lot better to bowl to a lot of left-handers than consistently to right-handers,” he said. “It’s just cricket.”

WBA predicted starting XI vs Blackpool

After a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Huddersfield Town at the weekend, West Brom are back in league action this evening with a clash against Blackpool away from home.

With club captain Jake Livermore now serving a three-game ban after picking up a red card in the defeat against Huddersfield, he will be unavailable for the next few fixtures.

West Brom also have the likes of Dara O’Shea and Kean Bryan out with injuries. Taking this into account here is how we feel West Brom could line up tonight with three changes expected.

In goal considering how he’s played in almost every league game so far this season, we can see Sam Johnstone will keep his place in the team on this occasion.

For a back three, we think Baggies boss Valerien Ismael will go for the same trio that started against Huddersfield with Kyle Bartley, Cedric Kipre and Matt Clarke all in to try and keep a clean sheet this evening.

In midfield, with Livermore suspended we think Ismael will go with Robert Snodgrass and Jason Molumby, with Alex Mowatt, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £13k-per-week according to Salary Sport, dropping down to the substitutes bench.

At wing-back, we think Connor Townsend will keep his place on the left-hand side with Taylor Gardner-Hickman also retaining his place on the right-hand side.

For the attack, we can see Ismael sticking with Karlan Grant and Matt Phillips but bringing Callum Robinson, who managed to score in Republic of Ireland’s 3-0 win over Luxembourg during the recent international break, back in with Grady Diangana dropping out after he failed to impress and even have one clear shot at goal against Huddersfield.

West Brom are on an incredibly spotty run of form at the moment with three wins, one draw and four defeats under their belt in their eight previous league outings.

Thus, Ismael and everyone else at the Midlands club will undoubtedly be hoping that the team will be able to produce a strong performance and pick up all three points so they aren’t in danger of potentially missing out on a promotion place by the end of the season.

West Ham fans erupt over Kretinsky update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have erupted over what some have called ‘massive news’ as an off-field development comes to light.

Recently, Czech billionaire and part-Sparta Prague owner Daniel Kretinsky purchased a minority 27% stake in the club with the alleged option to buy West Ham outright at a later date.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This prompted theories that Kretinsky’s new-found involvement with the club could eventually spell an end to GSB’s ownership and now, as per The Evening Standard, those murmurs may be proven correct.

According to their information, the 46-year-old has indeed agreed an option to buy the club outright at a set price and a deal could go through as early as 2023. This could see Kretinsky complete a full takeover of the club at that date even if he isn’t ‘obliged’ to take up that option.

West Ham fans buzzing…

Given the protests and turmoil surrounding GSB’s ownership in recent years, heighted by their unpopular decision to leave the Boleyn Ground, it’s little wonder so many Irons supporters are pleased with this update.

The prospect of a potential full takeover as early as 2023 certainly has supporters excited, as you can see from the Twitter reaction below:

Ismael must stick with Jayson Molumby

With arguably West Bromwich Albion’s biggest game of the Championship season coming up on Saturday, Valerien Ismael will know that he must get his team selection absolutely spot-on if he is to have any hope of leaving Craven Cottage with all three points.

One dilemma which is likely to be high on the Frenchman’s mind is what to do in the middle of the park, with Robert Snodgrass and Jayson Molumby impressing in the absence of the injured Alex Mowatt and the suspended Jake Livermore in the 3-0 win over Bristol City last time out.

However, despite club captain Livermore seemingly being back in contention for the clash with Fulham, Ismael simply must ensure that he affords Molumby a spot in his starting XI this weekend, as the midfielder has proven in recent weeks that he is an incredibly solid option in heart of the Albion team.

Indeed, having been brought into the Baggies’ starting XI against Swansea City, the Brighton loanee was one of West Brom’s few bright sparks in the 2-1 loss at the Liberty Stadium, making one key pass, four tackles and winning five duels over his 90 minutes on the pitch. Those returns saw the 22-year-old receive a SofaScore match rating of 7.0.

The £900k-rated Irishman followed this performance up with yet another impressive display in the 3-0 win over Bristol City last weekend, with Molumby completing 40 passes – the most of any player to feature in the match – making two tackles and winning eight duels. These metrics saw the midfielder earn a SofaScore match rating of 7.3.

As such, considering these recent performances, it would seem crucial that Ismael sticks with the player who he himself dubbed an “incredible” talent on Saturday, as the £7.1k-per-week ace has more than proven that he deserves to keep his place against Fulham.

Phil Hay drops Leeds verdict on Cody Drameh

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has dropped an exciting claim about Leeds United starlet Cody Drameh amid his performance against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

What’s the story?

Despite Marcelo Bielsa choosing a relatively strong starting line-up for the trip to the Emirates, the Leeds boss did hand a rare opportunity to one of his club’s brightest young prospects, Drameh.

And, during a discussion with fans for The Athletic, Hay delivered his take on the young right-back.

He said: “The point about Drameh was that he could be a natural successor to Ayling, who still has time left but is clearly not in his first flush of youth. Drameh is well thought of and I do feel like he’s got a serious chance here if he’s patient.”

Part of Leeds United’s future

While naturally much of the excitement of Leeds United fans will be surrounding Joe Gelhardt – especially after his superb match-saving cameo against Wolves at the weekend – Drameh is another from the U23s group who could really make a name for himself at Elland Road.

At just 19, the teenager has got plenty of time to grow and develop, and while first-team minutes may be more of a premium now that the Whites find themselves out of one of the cup competitions, he’s got all the makings of being a top star for the future.

As Hay hinted at, Drameh could be the perfect natural successor to Luke Ayling at right-back, with the latter now having turned 30 back in the summer.

Eredivisie scout Xander Wilkinson was quick to rave about his potential and how good he is already, saying: “Defensively so impressive! His mind works quicker than most right-backs I’ve seen in a naturally defensive mindset. Tactically very aware of what is being asked of him, times his engagements well, needs to add a little more unpredictability going forward.”

Whether it’s over the course of this season, or the following one, Leeds fans will be hoping to see a lot more of Drameh, and that is sure to excite them.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star was shocking vs Arsenal…
