Wolves signing Danny Loader could be hugely detrimental for their academy

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Wolves are interested in Reading starlet Danny Loader, who has been impressing in the Championship this season. However, by signing him, it could be incredibly detrimental for certain members of the club’s academy.

What’s the word?

Loader has quickly become one of the most promising young English players in the country, starring for the Royals this season after initially finding himself in superb form in Premier League 2.

Before being promoted to the first team, he scored ten goals for their U23 side. He would then go on to feature 21 times in the Championship.

Despite only scoring once, the threat he’s provided in attacking areas of the pitch has caught the eye of Wolves, who are now plotting a move for the 19-year-old, per Football Insider. The report also claims that a host of Premier League club have monitored the player.

Detrimental for the academy

By signing Loader, Wolves could be sending out a dangerous message to some of their brightest prospects already at the club.

The Reading man has a huge amount of potential but it would be incredibly detrimental for the likes of Niall Ennis and Benny Ashley-Seal.

Both players are also forwards who possess similar attacking traits to Loader.

However, if the latter was to arrive then any chance of Ennis and Ashley-Seal gaining first team minutes would take a severe hit.

It’s a struggle to get into the Wolves side as it is, especially with Nuno Santo preferring a lack of rotation.

The aforementioned Wolves academy players scored a combined 20 goals between them as Rob Edwards’ U23 side went onto win Premier League 2 Division 2. With that in mind, they certainly deserve a chance to show what they’re capable of at senior level.

Ennis has had major setbacks with injury in the past whilst Ashley-Seal has spent the second half of the campaign on loan in Portugal with Familicao.

If Loader was to sign, both players would likely be pushed further down the pecking order and may have them doubting their futures at Molineux.

The Chalkboard: Lolley needs to move back out wide after Appiah introduction

[ad_pod ]

One of the main faults with Nottingham Forest this season has been a lack of pace in attack. Joe Lolley has been one of few shining lights from the 2018/19 campaign but aside from that, they’ve lacked many game changers.

But, trying to put right that lack of pace by introducing Arvin Appiah into the side has actually hindered both Lolley and the team itself.

It’s hard to criticise someone so young, but his introduction is a reason for why they’ve performed so badly recently, even if it’s not actually his fault.

On the chalkboard

Forest have witnessed quite a staggering drop off in recent weeks. Originally in with an outside bet of making the play-offs, all hopes have been scuppered with some very ordinary performances of late.

Fans had called for Appiah to start more games last month after comments made by his manager, but they may now be cursing their words after a string of poor displays by their side.

As a result of Appiah playing on the left wing, Lolley has been moved into a more central role and has not nearly had the same effect as he’s had from a wide position.

The former Huddersfield man has eight goals and 11 assists in the Championship this season, but just one of those goals have come from when he’s played behind the striker.

Therefore, it’s clear where Lolley needs to play; out wide. If Forest are to end the season on a high then O’Neill will have to move him back on the flanks.

Bedding in Appiah is a good idea ahead of next season. The 18-year-old is a hugely exciting prospect and deserves some minutes under his belt but not when it prevents their key player from doing the job he’s done so well throughout the current campaign.

To accommodate the England youth international then Lolley may be better suited to moving out to the right side of midfield, a position he’s already claimed eight assists from this season.

In fact, starting the pair of them in wide positions would almost certainly give them an improved dynamic going forward and must be something the boss is considering experimenting with towards the end of the campaign.

Our best pairing: Rangers fans were happy to see Nikola Katic back next to Connor Goldson

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at seeing Nikola Katic back alongside Connor Goldson at centre-half, and have lauded the pair’s defensive impact when deployed alongside each other.

Katic, who only arrived at the club back in the summer, has managed just 14 league appearances under Steven Gerrard as Joe Worrall has been the preferred option to partner Goldson.

Check out Keith from C’mon the Hoops’ fascinating video on the origins of the Old Firm derby below…

However, the Croatian was handed a start next to Goldson against Motherwell, and performed excellently as the duo helped the Gers to a clean sheet.

Given his lack of frequent starts, many Rangers fans were delighted to see Katic come in alongside the more involved figure of Goldson, and were pleased with the outcome.

The win puts Rangers onto 66 points for the season, although they are still 11 points behind leaders Celtic.

Let’s see how the Glaswegian giants’ fanbase reacted on Twitter after seeing Katic and Goldson partner each other in defence…

O’Neill in a Catch 22 situation with Grabban as he looks set to sit out Hull clash

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest manager Martin O’Neill has suggested that Lewis Grabban is unlikely to feature against Hull City on Saturday as his injury issue continues, and it has left the experienced boss in a Catch 22 situation.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Reds’ top goalscorer has missed the east Midlands outfit’s previous two Championship fixtures with an Achilles problem, and while they play-off hopefuls would clearly love to have him back in action now it may not be possible.

Speaking via The Nottingham Post, the 66-year-old said: “I think that will be too early for him now. He is making good progress and he has reacted well to the latest injection.

“He is feeling better within himself. You don’t want to step things up too quickly and end up having him miss another couple of games.

“Let’s make sure he is right, for a start. I think both he and the medical team will keep me guided on that one. I am entirely in their hands on that one.”

O’Neill in a Catch 22 situation

He really is.

With Daryl Murphy struggling in front of goal and loanee Leo Bonatini yet to make his mark at the City Ground following his January loan move, the Reds need Grabban back in action as soon as possible to boost their goal threat – they have netted just eight times in eight league games since O’Neill’s appointment.

While Forest and their manager need to think about the long term and not rush the 31-year-old back too quickly, they have a great chance of finishing in the top six right now and it must be tempting to throw him back into the fold, even if he isn’t quite 100% fit.

Leeds United: Pontus Jansson injured just at the right time

Pontus Jansson’s injury appears to have come at a fortunate time for Leeds United, given the international break which is set to commence with Euro 2020 qualifiers this week.

Leeds United confirmed on Monday morning that Jansson had to withdraw from the Swedish squad due to a knee injury he suffered against Sheffield United on Saturday and will begin rehab at the club this week. Indeed, the 28-year-old is expected to be sidelined for no more than three weeks, meaning he won’t miss a lot of Championship action given the international break.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa would be a relieved man after Jansson was forced to play both striker and goalkeeper against the Blades on Saturday, while carrying the knee injury. Jansson was unable to be substituted for treatment, because the Whites had used all of their allowed three bench players and he was forced to move to striker due to his inability to move freely.

The former Torino player than had to go in-goal after Kiko Casilla was red carded in stoppage time, certainly making it an eventful day at Elland Road.

Fortunately, Jansson only had to see out the game for a short period of time before the final whistle blew.

The international break now gives the defender – who everyone will agree is beyond crucial on his day – a good period to make a proper recovery before the club’s next match against Millwall at the end of the month.

But, Jansson could still be busy with his rehab that stage and his Argentine coach will be hoping he could be ready for the trip to Birmingham City early in April. The loss against Sheffield United have seen Leeds slip to third on the Championship table and given how good and consistent Jansson has been this season, Bielsa would need him back as soon as possible if Leeds were to secure automatic qualification to the Premier League next season.

Norwich City currently occupy first spot on the league table with a four-point gap over Sheffield and don’t look likely to give their place as leaders away.

Leeds need all the boosts they can get at this point and, strangely, an injury to one of their best players at the right time might actually be a good thing.

Oussama Idrissi would give Crystal Palace the edge they have been lacking in the summer

Wilfried Zaha was the hero once again as Crystal Palace managed to salvage a point against West Ham last week.

The Hammers took a first-half lead after Mark Noble scored from the penalty spot after just 24 minutes. The Eagles constantly threatened to equalise and the goal finally came when Zaha beat Lukasz Fabianski from a tight angle. Roy Hodgson’s men were able to hold on to secure a vital point against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

It seemed at times that Palace were once again going to draw a blank on home soil – an issue that has plagued them throughout the season. When Zaha hasn’t been on form, Palace have looked toothless in the final third. This is a problem that the former England manager simply must address when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

One man the Eagles could target is AZ Alkmaar star – Oussama Idrissi. Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, the former Netherlands U21 international has been a mainstay in the team since joining from FC Groningen back in January 2018. The 22-year-old has been in inspired form this season, helping his side to fourth in the Eredivisie table so far.

Idrissi has been excellent in front of goal, netting seven times already in the league. As well as his goalscoring exploits, the youngster has also chipped in with six assists for his team-mates. Comfortable on either wing or through the centre, Idrissi would shoulder some of the goal-scoring burden currently on Zaha’s shoulders. The Morocco citizen possesses fantastic technical ability, completing an incredible 3.7 successful dribbles and 2 key passes per game in the league (WhoScored).

The winger is only getting better and Palace should do all they can to bring him to England.

Crystal Palace fans, thoughts?

Bukayo Saka is Arsenal’s big money saver this summer

The 2019/20 season has been far from perfect for Arsenal.

Three managers, an early Europa League exit and sitting barely in the top ten makes finding any positives a hard job for anyone. However, one of the stand out players for the Gunners this campaign has been 18-year-old Bukayo Saka.

The England Youth International has had an amazing breakthrough campaign, featuring in all four competitions both as a winger and a full back.

Despite Unai Emery giving him his debut, it has been under Mikel Arteta where Saka has really shone.

In a way, he was thrown in the deep end, being deployed in an unnatural left wing-back position, owing to the long-term injuries of Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney.

However, Saka has shown unbelievable confidence in adapting to his new position, which is in part thanks to Arteta’s system of play.

The former Manchester City number two likes to start with four at the back, which develops into a three, allowing the full-backs to play as inverted wingers.

This, of course, takes the burden of learning to be a natural full-back away from Saka, so he can play further up the pitch, but at the same time he has worked extremely hard for the team both in attack and defence. But where Saka has caught people’s attention has been in his contribution to goals.

In his 29 appearances for the first team this season, Saka has scored three goals and made nine assists, which is more than any other Arsenal player.

These numbers are certainly impressive, especially considering he has been playing out of his natural position most of the time.

Saka has confidence in abundance, a trait that flows through the team when he is at his best, always looking to take on opposition players in one-on-ones and linking cleverly with his teammates.

Gabriel Martinelli is another youngster having a superb season and has not only formed a potential new bromance with Saka, but created a deadly partnership whenever they play together in attack.

Arteta has shown a lot of faith in his younger players, seeing them as first-team regulars now rather than laterm not only because of talent, but also because it will save the club a lot of money in future transfer windows.

The Hale End Academy has been producing some exciting young players of late and Arteta is reaping the rewards for trusting in it, including Saka, who is a graduate of the academy.

While question marks remain over a number of first-team players’ futures and a reportedly low transfer budget in the summer, Arteta would do well to trust Saka to make the step up as a regular.

A player who has buckets of talent, great adaptability and vast potential, Saka could be the ultimate money saver for Arteta’s side, as they look to rebuild and get back into the Champions League.

West Brom fans urge the club to sign £9m transfer target Mislav Orsic

West Bromwich Albion are yet to make a splash in the January transfer window, but that could soon change according to recent reports.

The Baggies are said to hold huge interest in Dinamo Zagreb’s prolific forward, Mislav Orsic, with news emerging from his homeland Croatia suggesting that a move to the Hawthorns could be struck before the end of the month.

BirminghamLive have since claimed that the Prva HNL champions value their prolific talisman at around £9m after signing him for just £1.5m last summer.

and Bilic himself has even confirmed his interest in the versatile Croatian.

It has sparked mass reaction from sections of the Albion fanbase with many wanting to see the club stump up the cash to clinch him.

Some supporters felt that the potential move could be quite the steal as one man suggested that it would be the ‘bargain of the century’ while another believed the Baggies should just announce promotion already if they can sign the Croatian.

Orsic has been in red hot form this season – in 26 appearances in all competitions, the 27-year-old has bagged 19 goals, including a hattrick in the Champions League against Atalanta, who advanced into the knockout stages, per Transfermarkt.

He is also well renowned for his pace and speed after being clocked at 31 k/ph in the European competition, which is the same speed as Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.

This has led to fans asking the club to simply pay what Zagreb are demanding…

One fan said Albion would be stupid not to pay £9m for a player of this quality in today’s market while the suggestion that he would be a bargain continued to be a recurring theme.

In addition, another member of the Baggies faithful believed that Bilic’s influence would help the player settle due to them both being from Croatia.

And finally, fans were quick to make a variety of comparisons – the first relating to two expensive mistakes in Brown Ideye and Oliver Burke, who the club spent around £25m on.

It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?

Another referenced the fact that Jarrod Bowen is commanding a £20m fee while a further supporter was left dreaming about the prospect of seeing the speedster in their attacking midfield department.

While in other news, West Brom have suffered an untimely blow towards their transfer plans this month…
