West Ham now eyeing Nyamsi

As per RMC Sport, there has been a transfer update out of West Ham United involving Strasbourg defender Gerzino Nyamsi as GSB set their sights on a brand new transfer target.

The Lowdown: Moyes aims for new centre-back signing…

According to recent reports, manager David Moyes has apparently earmarked the signing of a new defender as one of his major summer priorities.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The likes of James Tarkowski (Burnley) and Nikola Milenkovic (Fiorentina) have recently been linked with recent claims even emerging that West Ham are in pole position for the latter man.

Angelo Ogbonna is currently still sidelined through injury and Moyes has had to make do with just Craig Dawson, Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop as his senior options.

This comes amid their chase for European football next season, and if the Irons make it there again for 2022/2023, they will need more depth in the defensive positions.

The Latest: Hammers officials eye Nyamsi…

According to RMC, a new West Ham target has emerged in Nyamsi, with club officials closely scouting the Ligue 1 ace.

This comes as he could now leave this summer and this report claims we can expect a ‘battle between Italy and England’.

As well as West Ham, Newcastle and Napoli are named as interested parties as Nyamsi stands out in France.

RMC go on to state that English clubs have noticed his statistical superiority as he towers over most central defenders in Ligue 1 – most notably his aerial duels, ball carrying, tackling and recovery (RMC Sport).

The Verdict: Get it done?

While it is unclear how much Strasbourg could demand for Nyamsi, given his meagre £4.5 million Transfermarkt value, it may not be much.

Standing at a colossal 6 foot 5, the 25-year-old is a real presence in defence and would take to the physicality of the Premier League like a duck to water.

As a summer battle looms, it’s interesting to see Moyes and co really cast the West Ham net out.

Durham dig in for final day chase

ScorecardDurham made a solid start to their pursuit of 171 to beat Lancashire at Old Trafford today. Michael Di Venuto played a crucial and steadying hand with 34 not out off 40 balls as his side reached 58 for 2 from 21 overs at close on day three of this County Championship match. Gary Keedy’s left-arm spin had removed both Mark Stoneman and Gordon Muchall but Durham require another 113 runs to clinch their fourth championship win of the season.Lancashire had been able to muster a second-innings score of only 226 all out thanks in the main to half-centuries for Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Mark Chilton, announced as the club’s 2011 beneficiary earlier in the day. Although the pitch is still tough to bat on it did not seem anywhere near as treacherous as it had done on day two when 18 wickets fell.Durham left-arm spinner Ian Blackwell took his time to settle, perhaps due to the cold and damp conditions. But, having taken five wickets in the first innings, he still finished as the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 102 from 33 overs. Leg-spinner Scott Borthwick also finished with 2 for 33 from 11 while Steve Harmison, Mitch Claydon and Liam Plunkett also struck.Despite the fact that the Red Rose, who started this match fourth in Division One, had given themselves something to bowl at they would have been disappointed to lose their last five wickets for 32 runs. They were also hamstrung by an injury to Sajid Mahmood, which was later revealed to be a back spasm, which meant that he could not take the new ball.Chilton, who scored 50 off 129 balls, had earlier shared a third-wicket partnership of 56 with nightwatchman Keedy (24) to get Lancashire going. He also shared 41 for the fourth wicket with Chanderpaul before the latter added 57 with Steven Croft (28) for the fifth.Chanderpaul hit sixes over midwicket and long-on off Blackwell. But, when he was bowled trying to cut Blackwell for 67 off 136 balls with the last ball of the afternoon session, it started the home collapse. Gareth Cross was trapped lbw by Blackwell, Luke Sutton lbw by Plunkett, Mahmood- batting with Paul Horton as his runner – caught behind by Phil Mustard off Blackwell for a duck and Glen Chapple run out by Borthwick.Durham had reached 22 for none after five overs of their chase when Keedy was brought into the attack and he bowled Stoneman off an inside edge in the 10th over with only another five runs added to the total. He later had Muchall caught at first slip by Horton for three to leave thescore at 43 for 2 in the 16th.Whether a first defeat in 21 Championship matches – dating back to last June – would signal an end to Lancashire’s title chances is questionable. But Durham, who were second bottom before the match, will leapfrog them in the standings with a win.

Watts returns for World Cricket League

Scotland’s selectors have named a 15-man squad for the ICC World Cricket League Division 1, to be held in the Netherlands from June 30 to July 10. The emphasis is on youth, as the squad has nine players aged 25 or under, but Fraser Watts’s excellent recent form in the domestic leagues has also earned him a place.Gavin Hamilton and Ryan Watson are both unavailable due to work commitments, while Freddie Coleman is taking time off in the lead-up to the event to concentrate on finishing his school term. This gives opportunities to young batsmen Ewan Chalmers, Preston Mommsen and Josh Davey, who have also been included in the squad to take on the hosts in a four-day Intercontinental Cup and one-day international match prior to the tournanment.”The World Cricket League will be a highly-competitive event, and it gives our players an excellent opportunity to test themselves against the other leading Associates,” said Peter Steindl, Scotland’s head coach. “We have picked the squad with the future as well as the present in mind, so I am looking forward to seeing how the players cope with the tournament environment.”Scotland squad: Gordon Drummond (capt), Richie Berrington, Josh Davey, Ewan Chalmers, Gordon Goudie, Majid Haq, Omer Hussain, Neil Laidlaw, Dougie Lockhart, Ross Lyons, Gregor Maiden, Neil McCallum, Preston Mommsen, Matthew Parker, Fraser Watts

Ferguson must start Richarlison v Villa

Everton are back in Premier League action today with an early afternoon kick-off against Aston Villa at Goodison Park in what will be Duncan Ferguson’s first game in charge of the team since he was appointed as caretaker manager following the sacking of Rafael Benitez after their disheartening 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at Carrow Road last weekend.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Ferguson could pick to be in his starting XI to take on Steven Gerrard’s side, one Toffees player who did not start against Norwich but we feel should be in the team from the outset on this occasion is Richarlison, who is currently on £110k-per-week according to Salary Sport.

After coming on with 54 minutes on the clock against Norwich, the 24-year-old not only managed to pull a goal back for the visitors with a brilliant bicycle-kick goal, he also completed two of his three dribbles and completed 11 of his 12 passes and won four duels, showing how much of an attacking threat he was for Everton and how much of a nuisance he was for the opposition.

This cameo performance earned the Brazilian an overall match rating of 7.3/10, making him Everton’s highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore, highlighting the quality he has and showing the sort of impact he can have on the team.

With this in mind and the 24-year-old having 46 goals in 131 appearances for Everton across all competitions, it shows why having him in the starting XI to take on Villa would give Ferguson a great chance of getting his tenure off to a flying start, especially if they can pick up all three points.

Richarlison’s attacking talents have been praised in the past by former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has previously hailed the Brazilian as “outstanding” in February 2020.

In terms of who could make way for the Brazilian if Ferguson decides to start him today, Salomon Rondon has only scored one goal in 13 Premier League appearances and register just one shot at goal in the defeat at Norwich, so perhaps he should be the one to drop out on this occasion.

Looking ahead to today’s game, if Ferguson can secure a win for his beloved Everton, this would surely be a massive boost for the club by moving away from the relegation zone and pulling to within just one point of Gerrard’s men in the table.

West Ham keen on centre-back duo

West Ham remain interested in potential January moves for Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Liverpool’s Nat Phillips, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye up January additions

The Hammers may be enjoying another excellent season but there is certainly a need to bring in reinforcements in the January transfer window, such is the extent of their injury crisis in the heart of defence.

First-choice centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma are both currently out, and the former is expected to be missing for most or all of the campaign.

With David Moyes hoping his team can push for a top-four finish and go far in the Europa League, surely at least one new face in that area is required.

The Latest: Journalist makes key claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that there is interest in both Tarkowski and Phillips, even though signing the Burnley man could prove to be difficult:

“Everything I’m told about West Ham remains focused around the centre-back options that we’ve heard before.

“There’s Tarkowski, who will obviously be really hard to get out of Burnley, and Nat Phillips.”

The Verdict: Phillips an exciting option

If Burnley refuse to sell Tarkowski this month, Phillips could be a shrewd investment instead, with the Liverpool man clearly not a key figure at Anfield, making just three appearances all season.

The 24-year-old showed what he is capable of last season, however, filling in admirably in the absence of injured trio Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, earning plenty of praise from Jurgen Klopp, who called the young Englishman ‘absolutely insane’ after a win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Phillips averaged a whopping 5.6 aerial duels won and 4.8 clearances per game in the Premier League in 2020/21, highlighting why he could come in as an assured option for West Ham, still with plenty of potential left to fulfil as he is yet to enter his prime.

Ganguly bets big on KKR attack

The Kolkata Knight Riders captain believes the team’s strong bowling lineup may help turn their fortunes around in the third season of the IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Sourav Ganguly believes the team’s strong bowling lineup may help turn their fortunes around in the third season of the IPL. Having finished sixth and last in the last two editions Ganguly felt the pace arsenal, led by New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond, would be crucial for a turnaround.”We will be getting the services of Shane Bond from the second match,” Ganguly said. “His raw pace can make a lot of difference. There is Ishant Sharma, who is a current India player. We have a seasoned campaigner in Ajit Agarkar. I wouldn’t count Eklak Ahmid out as he is a left-arm pacer. Left-arm pacers have done quite well in the IPL. Eklak brings in the necessary variation. We have a good prospect in Varun Aaron, who can bowl at 90 miles per hour.”Ganguly, who was speaking at Eden Gardens after a practice session on Thursday, said he had almost finalised the composition of the squad for the first match against Deccan Chargers on March 12, also the tournament opener. “I have a fair idea about the kind of squad we would take to Mumbai for the first match. We will have a couple of practice matches before we take a final call.”He felt it would be difficult to choose four foreign players for the matches. “When you have players like Chris Gayle, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Angelo Mathews and Ajantha Mendis in your ranks, it becomes a difficult choice.”He was also unsure about his batting position – whether he would open or bat one-drop. “Throughout my international career, I have mostly opened or batted at No. 3,” Ganguly said. “Though I haven’t decided, it will be either opening or at No. 3.”Manoj Tiwary, a new recruit, Ashok Dinda and Wriddhiman Saha are involved in the Deodhar Trophy and will not be available for the KKR preparatory camp but Ganguly said he wasn’t too bothered. “It’s always good to play matches,” he said. “They will get some serious match practice in the process.”He also said that the form of Saha and Dinda was not a worrying factor. “Wriddhi, in fact, batted well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” Ganguly said. “But he is batting way down at No. 6 whereas he should be batting up the order. Laxmi [Ratan Shukla] is bowling pretty well but he also needs to score runs. Dinda did pretty well. But we played mostly on good batting wickets where the batsman made good use of the Powerplay overs.”

Leeds: Mateo Joseph Fernandez alters Instagram page

Leeds United target Mateo Joseph Fernandez has made some significant changes to his Instagram profile, with a move to Elland Road in January looking increasingly likely, LeedsAllOver report.

The Lowdown: Whites agree deal

Fernandez is 18 years of age and is a Spanish attacker who is currently on the books of La Liga side Espanyol.

His current contract is set to expire in the summer, with Fernandez picking up the Honor Division’s Ballon d’Or for the 2020/21 season.

Radio Futbol journalist Diego Balbontin has stated that Fernandez is ‘set’ to move to Yorkshire in January, with Leeds allegedly reaching an agreement over a winter window transfer.

The Latest: Social media changes

LeedsAllOver shared a story on Wednesday afternoon, highlighting some changes to the striker’s Instagram bio.

They claimed that the teenager has removed Espanyol from his profile while adding that he is on the books of Wasserman, the same agency as Leeds duo Adam Forshaw and Crysencio Summerville.

The Verdict: Hint?

Removing Espanyol from his profile could be a hint that a move to Yorkshire is just around the corner.

Should that be the case and Fernandez does move to Thorp Arch, you’d expect he’d be placed into Mark Jackson’s Under-23 side to start with.

Leeds have the likes of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood as attacking options in the U23’s, so who knows, the Whites may decide to send the latter out on loan for the second half of the season following talks with Swansea City, granting some senior playing time for Greenwood and minutes under Jackson for Fernandez.

Jadhav century carries Assam

Group A

Scorecard
Dheeraj Jadhav’s first century for his new state side helped Assam to a healthy score at the end of the first day’s play in Guwahati. Amol Muzumdar’s decision to bat against Tripura was vindicated by Jadhav’s innings, which consumed 279 deliveries over 358 minutes, but there was a lack of firepower from the rest of Assam’s batsmen. Amit Sumanta Sinha, batting at No.3 on debut, made 42 and Muzumdar 40, but Timir Chanda’s four wickets gave the visitors some lift. From 244 for 3, Assam slipped to 256 for 7 by stumps.
Scorecard
Each of the six batsmen to walk to the crease on the opening day at Dhandad got a start, and without any of them really imposing themselves Goa finished in a dominant position. Swapnil Asnodkar made a solid 59 at the top, followed by 69 from the captain Sridharan Sriram, before Ajay Ratra collected a breezy 73 from 87 deliveries by the close. Asnodkar and Sriram’s half-centuries laid the platform, aided by a dogged 40 from Reagan Pinto, and allowed Ratra to walk out and sting the Jharkhand attack. Unlike those before him, Ratra will eye a century as Goa attempt to really shut out the opposition.
Scorecard
Rajasthan’s bowlers kept Vidarbha under wraps in Jaipur yet failed to bowl them out on day one. It was a slow day, with no batsman crossing 50 against a tidy bowling attack. Sumit Mathur (20-8-31-2) and Madhur Khatri (23-12-32-1) plugged away manfully and hardly allowed a run, while Vinod Chanawaria netted 2 for 28 from 12 overs. Ravi Jangid found himself needing to shore up the responsibility after Vidarbha’s top order stumbled, and by stumps had stonewalled himself to an unbeaten 45 from 207 deliveries.

Group B

Scorecard
TP Sudhindra’s first substantial contribution on return to Ranji Trophy cricket from the ICL put Madhya Pradesh in an advantageous position by stumps in Indore. Sudhindra, sharing the new ball, took a career-best 5 for 39 from 20 stifling overs of medium pace to help dismiss Jammu & Kashmir out for 171. Sudhindra got the ball rolling in the second over, dismissing Vinayak Mane for 1, and soon had J&K reeling at 33 for 3. His maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket came later when he got Abid Nabi for 20. The best score from J&K was Hardeep Singh’s 41 from the No. 7 spot. In reply, the opener Jalaj Saxena batted for an unbeaten 70 as MP finished day one just 58 runs behind J&K.
Scorecard
Boosted by left-arm seamer Tekkami Atchuti Rao’s career-best haul, Andhra dominated the first day in Anantapur. Haryana captain Sunny Singh opted to bat but laboured 61 deliveries for 9 amid a top-order slump that left the side 30 for 4 after 20.1 overs. Rao struck twice at the top and chipped away when recalled later in the innings and finished with 5 for 43. Sachin Rana’s 57 from 150 deliveries was the best any Haryana batsman could muster. In the 12 overs before stumps, Andhra’s openers stoutly added 17 runs.

Kenwright not mentioned in Everton article

Many Everton fans have been left fuming over an opinion piece on the Goodison Park faithful by Dominic King.

The journalist wrote for The Daily Mail about the Merseyside club’s recent problems, given that they have not won in seven games in the Premier League, and claims that they ‘run deeper’ than Rafa Benitez and what he is doing with the team on the pitch.

This comes after Toffees supporters were, as King describes, ‘volcanic’ in the away end after losing 1-0 to Brentford at the weekend.

However, King believes that other factors have played into their demise, including recruitment, their £1.7m transfer budget, and chopping and changing managers.

Nonetheless, what wound up Blues was there was no mention of any of the problems being the fault of Chairman Bill Kenwright.

As Chairman, he would have had a big say in their recruitment, transfer policy and the hiring and firing of managers, and so a lot of EFC fans feel as if he should also be held responsible.

Everton fans on King claim

These Evertonians fumed as King shared his claim on Twitter:

“Why is Kenwright getting away with it yet again?”

Credit: @richythepigeon

“Don’t say anything about Kenwright, you won’t be allowed anywhere near Goodison if you do. Why don’t you report what the fans feel instead of deflecting his criticism?”

Credit: @ToffeesStu1878

“Kenwright is part of the problem. He was also on the end of fans’ frustration. Changes are needed from the top to the bottom of the club. The figures don’t lie. This BOD are not fit to run Everton. #EnoughIsEnough”

Credit: @nismoneil

“Dom King likes Kenwright because 21 trophyless years under his stewardship is just what Liverpool fans want from an Everton Chairman.”

Credit: @bernieo63

“What about Kenwright? He’s the one constant through all the failure”

Credit: @gaino92

“Not a single mention of Kenwright who is the core of the problems?”
