The five most tiresome Twitter debates

Imagine for a moment what Twitter could be: a global community of intelligent discourse; the best online pub conversation in the world.

Instead, look at your timeline right now. Someone has put up that photo of Mourinho peering through the curtains again haven’t they.

While a Twitter utopia remains a distant dream we can at least improve our lot in the meantime, starting with five football debates that are so long in the tooth they were once accompanied by “…and that Shay Given looks a prospect”.

If you continue to indulge in any of the below please be aware of an indisputable truth – people are yawning at you. They are yawning at their phones at what you have tweeted and by extension they are yawning at you.

It’s just a little bit of history repeating

Claiming that a rival club has no history is as self-defeating as smearing your genitals in mayonnaise and dangling them over an anthill. For one thing it exposes you immediately as an ignoramus and furthermore someone who believes that English football began in 1992. For another it heavily implies that you only equate relevancy to glory, an unedifying mind-set that marks you down as a colossal tool.

If a club won very little before you were born – and most times you are very, very wrong about that anyway. Why not try googling? You’ll be blown away – they still possess a rich history that involves an esteemed roll-call of legends on the pitch and in the dug-out, world wars, incredible tales of stoicism and wonderment, and generation after generation of loyal support.

Compared to that you are an insignificant speck of dust floating close-by to its imposing tapestry. You are a grain of sand to its ocean of gravitas.

You are simply not worthy to deride a club’s heritage. None of us are. Unless it’s MK Dons of course. Then it’s fine.

Attendance one-upmanship

In spare bedrooms across the land they screenshot sparse sections of stands believing this matters a lot, believing this is pertinent proof that the club in question is ‘tinpot’. The irony is utterly lost on them

They could be out, maybe in a bar, but that would likely mean talking to girls. And girls are scary.

In a grave economic climate, where many struggle to get by Friday to Friday, mocking those unable to afford criminally high ticket prices at least once a fortnight is more Tory than Louise Mensch pretending to give a fiver to a beggar but it’s really a scrunched up piece of paper that reads ‘Get a job you loser scum’.

It’s not big, it’s not clever, and in many cases it’s extremely doubtful that the seat-counters are season-card holders themselves. It’s a pitiful state of affairs all round really.

Ozil v A.N.Other

Dear Arsenal fans,

We get that you really, really rate Mesut Ozil. Honestly, we do. We read between the lines and somehow picked up on the subtle clues. And we don’t quite know why you’re under the impression that we – the rest of the Twitter population – don’t rate the German maestro. Maybe it was that time when one of us said he wasn’t ‘all that’ following a poor performance. In which case we are truly sorry.

Can you please stop now with all the comparing of your attacking midfielder with every other attacking midfielder in the Premier League, including graphs, stats, and nonsensical hyperbole. Because it ceased being strange some time ago. Now we’re in unchartered territory.

Talking about net spend is gross

Though he was roundly mocked for it, the Arsenal fan who wanted to talk about net spend should have a pint bought for him in every pub he enters. Because he unintentionally took a subject that is utterly reductive and placed it forever into the realms of parody where it will hopefully one day die a slow and lonely death, its last breath probably whispering something about add-ons.

https://vine.co/v/ew0ad9iQKIU

Reducing football to fictional balance sheets – fictional because unless you work in the inner sanctum of your club the figures you quote are derived largely from tabloid guesswork – is as weird as asking a supermodel standing before you in her bra and pants where her underwear was manufactured and how much the hourly rate is for the factory workers.

My multi-gazzionaire club spent three million less in the last financial year than your multi-gazzionaire club. Ouch, does anyone have a squirt of Savlon for the burn?

Ref bias

Howard Webb was a red. Mark Clattenburg is also a red but of the other persuasion. Mike Dean hates this club. Oliver hates that club.

Yet United supporters are adamant that Webb hated them while Clattenburg is loathed by every club he reportedly favours. The disagreements on this subject meanwhile are scheduled to end on the fourth of never.

If you believe that the standard of officiating in this country is sub-par then there is credence to your argument.

If you insist there is corruption within the refereeing fraternity then I would be sceptical but willing to listen.

If you genuinely think that a ref – with an assessor marking his performance and his career on the line – will show bias to one side because he had a poster of them on his childhood wall then please seek immediate help.

The ex-Rangers star took to social media to show off his shirt, writing: "[Cristiano Ronaldo] Thank you idol. I love him. Swapping shirts with him it's crazy I can't lie. I hope he will keep mine too."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo proved decisive in the first leg of their Champions League tie, scoring a late goal for the Riyadh club, who dominated the game but had a tough time creating clear chances until the veteran struck. The two teams will complete the tie on Wednesday evening.

San Siro, Anfield and European football's best atmospheres – ranked

GOAL counts down the most passionate venues across the continent, taking both crowd noise and choreography into account…

Inter 'host' city rivals AC Milan in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday, with another raucous atmosphere expected at San Siro. But which ground boasts the best atmosphere in European football?

It's a pretty subjective topic, obviously. Choosing between the continent's most intimidating venues certainly isn't easy. After all, what some stadiums lack in stature, they can make up for in noise. But there's no denying that some clubs boast that winning combination of deafening crowd noise and stunning choreography.

Below, GOAL attempts the difficult task of trying to rank the best atmospheres in Europe…

  • Getty

    15Waldstadion (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Eintracht Frankfurt's travelling fans have generated plenty of headlines in recent years, and not always for the right reasons. The way in which they managed to take over Camp Nou for last year's Europa League clash with Barcelona was mightily impressive, but the violent scenes we saw in Naples before this season's Champions League clash with Napoli were a disgrace.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that the atmosphere on matchdays at the Waldstadion is something special. Frankfurt's fans are also famous for some fantastic tifi.

  • Getty

    14Estadio Metropolitano (Atletico Madrid)

Atletico's old home the Vicente Calderon really was a cauldron of noise, and unlike some other clubs who have changed stadium, the Rojiblancos have managed to bring the noise of their dusty, earthy former ground to the shiny new Metropolitano. The ground, which Atletico moved into in 2017, has 68,000 seats and, unlike the Calderon, a roof to keep all the noise in.

Best of all, the stadium has its very own conductor in Diego Simeone, who is always there to remind every pair of lungs in the ground of their responsibility to keep the players motivated and intimidate the opposition.

  • 13Toumba Stadium (PAOK Salonica)

Aerial footage looked like it was showing a war-zone. It was in fact a fireworks display to celebrate PAOK Salonica's first title in 34 years. The Greek side have some of the most fervent fans in football, so they were always going to put on a show after ending their title drought in 2019, but this was off the scale.

Their fans have a penchant for pyrotechnics, and caused shocking scenes last season at Marseille, when both sets of ultras were seen throwing fireworks at each other. God help visiting teams who have the misfortune to play away there!

  • 12San Siro (AC Milan & Inter)

Let's face it, one of the main reasons the average football fan was so excited about the prospect of Milan meeting Inter in the Champions League semi-finals was the choreography. When it comes to tifi, the Derby della Madonnina is, and always has been, in a league of its own.

Down through the years, the game has inspired themes as diverse as Dante's Inferno and Nightmare on Elm Street. Last week's Devil display from Milan's supporters certainly didn't disappoint, and one can be sure that their Inter counterparts will have something just as spectacular in store for the second leg at San Siro.

The Giuseppe Meazza may be an ageing arena, but it is still known as 'La Scala del Calcio' for very good reason.

Barcelona ratings: Frenkie de Jong masterclass helps Xavi's side beat Real Madrid to all-but seal La Liga title

Barcelona came from behind to beat Real Madrid 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday, likely sealing a first league title under Xavi.

Barcelona probably only needed one point here. Instead, they got three. Sergi Roberto grabbed the first goal, and Franck Kessie slotted home a late winner to see off Real Madrid and establish a 12-point lead atop La Liga.

Real Madrid went ahead much against the run of play, with Vinicius Jr's speculative cross deflecting into the net off Ronald Araujo's head.

Barcelona grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, with Sergi Roberto capitalising on a series of deflections before curling the ball home from ten yards out.

And they found a late winner, with Alejandro Balde feeding Kessie at the far post for an easy finish in second-half stoppage time.

GOAL rates Barcelona's players from Camp Nou…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10):

Entirely wrong-footed by Madrid's opener after a nasty deflection.

Ronald Araujo (6/10):

Unfortunate to concede an own goal. Was otherwise reliable against Vinicius.

Jules Kounde (7/10):

Defended Benzema well and offered valuable cover for Araujo.

Andreas Christensen (7/10):

Put a free header off target. Help dig in to prevent a late winner from Los Blancos.

Alejandro Balde (7/10):

Loads of running and ever-improving in his defensive positioning. Nice assist late on.

AdvertisementGettyMidfield

Sergi Roberto (7/10):

A surprise inclusion in the XI. Rewarded his manager's faith with the equaliser.

Sergio Busquets (7/10):

Made the standard range of tackles. Was worryingly slow to recover on a couple of occasions.

Frenkie de Jong (8/10):

Created five chances, completed most of his passes, relieved pressure with some wonderful dribbles. A lovely showing.

GettyAttack

Gavi (7/10):

Scrappy, energetic, reliable on the ball. Lucky not to get a red card for barging Dani Ceballos over off the ball. Seems to lose his head a bit in the big games.

Robert Lewandowski (7/10):

Forced some good saves out of Courtois, blasted a scissor kick over the bar. Unlucky not to find the net.

Raphinha (7/10):

Dangerous in his running, regularly cutting onto his left foot. Fired in four shots on goal.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Franck Kessie (8/10):

A bit of a surprise that he didn't start. Grabbed the winner in stoppage time.

Ferran Torres (6/10):

Stretched the game with some neat runs.

Ansu Fati (N/A):

Almost started a fight after tripping Ceballos off the ball. Booked

Xavi (9/10):

Went for his usual 4-2-3-1 formation, and it all worked out for him rather well. Selecting Roberto over Kessie seemed a big call, but the surprise inclusion grabbed a goal. Title sewn up?

Bancroft ton underlines WA's dominant day

ScorecardFile photo – Cameron Bancroft was involved in two mammoth stands on the first day of the match against Queensland•Getty Images

An unbeaten century from opener Cameron Bancroft and fifties from Marcus Harris and Shaun Marsh underlined Western Australia’s dominant batting effort against Queensland at the WACA.Western Australia were put in to bat by Queensland, and Bancroft and Harris began with a solid 116-run stand for the first wicket. Mark Steketee broke the partnership by dismissing Harris for 65 in the 40th over but that was the only success Queensland would have with the ball on the day as Bancroft and Marsh built an unbroken 205-run stand for the second wicket.Bancroft was given two reprieves by Queensland – on 33 and 63 – before he brought up his second successive first-class century with a four off Mitchell Swepson, and then crossed the 150-run mark towards the end of the day. Marsh, meanwhile, finished the day on 95 not out, having struck 13 fours and two sixes.

Somerset fall short despite Allenby efforts

Will Beer and Michael Yardy bowled Sussex to a five-run NatWest T20 Blast victory over Somerset at Taunton

Will Beer and Michael Yardy bowled Sussex to a five-run NatWest T20 Blast victory over Somerset at Taunton. The two spinners shared five wickets for 46 runs as the hosts plunged from a promising 78 for 1 to 96 for 6, chasing what looked a reasonable target of 176. Beer claimed 3 for 23 and Yardy 2 for 23.Somerset were eventually restricted to 170 for 8, Jim Allenby marking his T20 debut for the club with 79, including seven fours and three sixes. Earlier, Luke Wright, Mahela Jayawardene and Chris Jordan had ensured Sussex of a competitive 175 for 6, while another spinner, Max Waller, conceded only 20 from four overs. After the early loss of Chris Nash, leg before to a full ball from Alfonso Thomas, Sussex soon gathered momentum through Wright and Jayawardene, who took the score to 62 by the end of the six overs of Powerplay.Jayawardene looked in great form and had hit four fours and two sixes in facing just 23 balls when well caught by the diving Tom Cooper at short third-man off Allenby in the eighth over.Insights

For nine overs of Somerset’s chase the match was evenly poised, they then proceeded to lose 5 for 18 in four overs and were playing catch-up thereafter. It was Sussex’s spinners, Mike Yardy and Will Beer, who did the damage, the pair ultimately combining to take 5 for 46 from eight overs, ripping the heart out of Somerset’s strong middle-order which collapsed from 78 for 1 to 96 for 6.

Still the visitors flourished until in the 13th over, bowled by Jamie Overton, two sensational catches off successive balls interrupted their progress. First Lewis Gregory raced in from the cover boundary as Wright skied in his direction, eventually talking the ball inches off the ground. Then, after the batsmen had crossed, Allenby dived to grab the ball one-handed as Craig Cachopa slashed to point.Wright had hit four fours and two sixes in his 35-ball innings. With Waller bowling tightly at the River End, Somerset at last gained a measure of control until Jordan’s late assault. The powerful allrounder blasted three fours and two sixes to ensure a respectable total, despite some impressive bowling from Sohail Tanvir (1 for 28) on debut.Somerset looked favourites when Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego helped Allenby give them a decent start, which saw 54 come off the first six overs. But the course of the game changed in the ninth over when Trego carelessly pulled a short ball from Yardy straight to Jordan at midwicket.Yardy and Beer then took control, the former removing James Hildreth to a catch at the wicket, while the latter sent back Tom Cooper, Sohail Tanvir and Lewis Gregory in quick succession with a superb spell from the River End.Allenby watched the procession before moving to a fluent 39-ball half-century, with six fours and a six. Abdur Rehman produced some lusty blows in belated support, but it was too little too late and 31 were needed off the final two overs.Jordan made sure of victory by having Rehman caught at cover for 24 while conceding only seven off the 19th and Allenby was left frustrated after a fine individual effort, ended when he was run out in the final over. Waller came in to hit a six off his first ball, but with another maximum needed to tie the game, he could score only a single.

Azhar Mahmood back for Surrey in T20

The former Pakistan allrounder, who is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in T20 history, will not count as an overseas player due to his British citizenship.Mahmood played every game for Surrey in last year’s revamped NatWest T20 Blast, with matches played mostly on Friday evenings through the summer, helping them to Finals Day for the second consecutive year. Petition against PCB constitution rejected

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has rejected a writ petition against the PCB’s new constitution, discouraging an attempt to push the Pakistan board into another legal tangle. The court has also fined the four petitioners Rs 1 million each for misguiding the court and concealing facts.Justice Athar Minallah, the High Court judge, rejected the petition after a first hearing and said: “The four petitioners’ objection on the constitution was rejected as they tried to mislead the court by concealing facts.”The four petitioners in the appeal are Nadeem Sadal, Aamir Nawab [a former PCB governing board member from the Abbottabad Cricket Association], Mohammad Rafiq and Ameer Haider. The court noted that none of the four petitioners, who had questioned the newly implemented constitution, were aggrieved parties and all of them were given heavy monetary sanctions which will be paid to the PCB directly.Incidentally, it was Sadal’s petition in the Islamabad High Court in May last year that led to then-PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf’s suspension after his election was termed “polluted” and “dubious”. The decision triggered a leadership crisis within the PCB and the chairmanship rotated between Najam Sethi and Ashraf before the crisis was finally resolved following Shaharyar Khan’s election as chairman.Sadal is a former official of the Army Cricket Club in Rawalpindi, and had earlier filed various petitions against the board. This is the third time that his appeal has been struck down by the court, which also questioned how Sadal’s fundamental rights were affected by the functioning of the PCB. Sadal had briefly joined the board as a member of the organising committee of the 2013 National Twenty20 Cup in Rawalpindi and had backed down from legal proceedings during that period. In July this year, the Supreme Court had ordered the PCB to implement the new constitution under which the board of governors would elect a new chairman. The decision brought an end to a period of turmoil that had extended for more than a year, affecting the sport in the country.
