All-round Jadeja downs Royals

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Dwayne Smith’s second half-century proved to be a match-winning effort•BCCI

On a day that the usual Chennai Super Kings heavy batting artillery failed to fire, their bowling, led by the versatile Ravindra Jadeja’s four-wicket haul, carved out a seven-run win against Rajasthan Royals on a slow Dubai pitch.Defending a middling total, Jadeja’s two wickets in two balls in his first over swung the pendulum decisively in favour of Super Kings, the wickets being those of Shane Watson and Sanju Samson. Royals never really recovered from the jolt and despite some happy hitting towards the end, disintegrated to their second defeat. When Super Kings were asked to bat, Brendon McCullum mis-hitting a number of deliveries seemed a case of the batsman struggling but if anything, it was actually an indication of the nature of the pitch which wasn’t as batsmen friendly as thought to be before the start of the match. McCullum was eventually out to a stunning catch by Steven Smith behind midwicket, hitting a length delivery from James Faulkner higher than longer. That slowness of the pitch didn’t seem to bother Dwayne Smith, however, as he raced to his second half-century in three matches with a flurry of big hits. After carefully playing out his first 18 deliveries for 17 runs, Smith used the pace the seamers offered him and carted the ball around the ground, his next nine deliveries bringing him 33 runs.Smith reached his fifty with a six but was done in by the sponginess of the surface in the very next delivery as he tried to force the ball over the infield, but only spooned a catch to mid-off. What followed was a period of play controlled by the Royals’ slower bowlers. He wouldn’t have known at the time, but he did end up playing the defining innings of the match as no one from either team came close to his strike rate of 178.57.The canny Rajat Bhatia, who later joked he was probably bowling “slower than the pitch”, served up his most economical spell in the IPL of 4-0-13-2 – all 13 of them in singles – hardly giving any pace for the batsmen to work with. At the other end, Pravin Tambe removed the dangerous MS Dhoni to push Super Kings from a comfortable 59 for 1 to a perilous 74 for 5. Was it not for a fighting 36 from Jadeja, Super Kings would have had to settle for a much lower total than what they eventually got.The task at the start of the second innings would have been considered manageable given the skill-level in Royals’ batting and the knowledge of how the pitch was going to play. Though Royals lost Abhishek Nayar early to a suicidal run, Rahane appeared comfortable as he regularly employed late deflections to manoeuvre the ball. Samson was impressive, launching Ben Hilfenhaus for two clean sixes to finish the fifth over on 37 for 1.The introduction of spin in the sixth over had the same effect as in the first innings with Rahane top-edging a sweep to deep square leg. Dhoni tossed the ball to Jadeja in the next over that pushed Royals to the edge of the precipice.

West Indies ready for title defence – Gibson

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson believes that despite losing the final T20 against England, the 2-1 series win was a pleasant indicator as to his team’s current standing

Croft: 165 was too much to chase

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson thinks his team is ready to retain their World T20 title in Bangladesh. Gibson believes that despite losing the final T20 against England, the 2-1 series win was a pleasant indicator as to his team’s current standing. He deemed England the perfect litmus test for him and his management to gauge the squad going into their title defence.”These three games were an indicator as to where we are as a group,” Gibson said. “It’s been a great series for us. We know it’s going to be a tough job to retain the trophy but the team is in a good place at the moment. We know what it takes to win the tournament. We just need to look after the basics of the game that need to be applied but we’re more than capable of retaining. The batting’s in a good place and that’s very important.”Gibson downplayed the loss in the last T20 as a setback as he drew “a lot of positives from today just like the other games.””We wanted to win all three games and it’s been a long time since we’ve won three on the trot in any format,” he said. “We came with the intention to sweep the series but England came really hard at us in the first ten [overs] getting over a hundred. Then we pulled it back in the second ten by limiting them to sixty or so. Even though we lost, we had players like [Chris] Gayle resting and we decided to give [Sheldon] Cottrell a chance to get themselves into the T20 atmosphere.”Gibson said that while he was disappointed with his top-order capitulating today, their batting strength was something he thinks other teams will be wary of when the tournament starts. “Our batters are in form and gelling. They’re eager to settle and acclimatise and we’ve got two warm-ups against England and Sri Lanka,” he said.”We are ready,” says West Indies coach Ottis Gibson ahead of the World T20 in Bangladesh•AFP

Andre Russell, who struggled in the series, is part of Gibson’s plans too and he suggested the allrounder could be an ideal replacement for Kieron Pollard. “Russell had a great CPL and as you know, we’re missing Pollard so we’re trying to give Andre the opportunity to fill the Pollard role but we have to give him time to grow into the role. We believe strongly in Russell and that he has the the capability, the game and the power to do that job,” he said.Gibson also admitted that their spin attack would be “the most massive part” of their arsenal as he tagged Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine as “outstanding” but also warned opponents not to underestimate his seamers such as Ravi Rampaul and Dwayne Bravo. He said that their wealth of experience would prove advantageous and also touted Krishmar Santokie as a big addition to their pace attack. However, Gibson said that the team would need to work on their fielding as it proved a troublesome area for them, which was exposed in this series.”I’m confident we’ll be ironing out our kinks in time for the tournament and we think the conditions there [in Bangladesh] will favour us so we’ll tweak and assess. It’s time to analyse some more in the important areas. I’m not too perturbed with players like Gayle and Badree who are resting little niggles but we’ve no serious injury concerns. We have the experience and we’re going out there to play entertaining cricket. We’re ready,” he said.

Petersen resists but India get two big scalps

Manjrekar: Can’t fault Amla’s reaction

South Africa are not an easy side to defeat as a record of just three Test losses in nearly four years testifies. India are finding that out first hand in Johannesburg, as the home side put up a stubborn resistance on the fourth day. India remain on top, more so after having squeezed out two major wickets, but another day of intense combat awaits them on Sunday.India lost wickets regularly on the fourth day but that didn’t alter the match situation much as Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli had already put the visitors in a dominant position yesterday. By the time India were bowled out midway through the second session, the target had reached never-chased-before proportions of 458.South Africa’s redoubtable batting line-up is stacked with players who have stellar second-innings records, and grinding out five-and-a-half sessions isn’t a task beyond them. It wasn’t Jacques Kallis (second innings avg 56.06) or Hashim Amla (53.51) or even opener Graeme Smith (48.06) who led the resistance early on. Instead, it was Alviro Petersen, possibly playing for his place in the side after a lean run in recent months, who soaked up much of the bowling and led a sprightly start.Graeme Smith was run-out off a direct hit from Ajinkya Rahane•AFP

India’s bowlers didn’t get alarming movement with the new ball and though there were edges and beatens aplenty, the only chance that came their way was a tough overhead catch for Virat Kohli on the first ball Smith faced off Zaheer Khan. It came off the middle of the bat, and though Kohli managed to get a hand on the ball, he couldn’t hold on and it popped too far for him to get a second chance.South Africa’s openers were never really at home – the leading edge or the ball that squared them up was never too far – but they went for their strokes and the runs came along briskly. Petersen played a gorgeous straight drive early on, and accumulated the bulk of his runs through whips towards midwicket. Smith, as usual, specialised in survival, besides muscling the ball frequently to the leg side.It was only when the openers have been together for nearly two hours that Smith seemed to be getting fluent, and the openers put together their first 100-run stand in more than a year.India desperately needed something to go their way, and it did. Smith has never been the nimblest runner between the wickets, and in 196 previous Test innings he had been run out only twice. Today, with his team still needing an enormous effort to save the game, he was caught short attempting a sharp, needless single. The throw from the mid-on fielder, Ajinkya Rahane, arrowed in on the base of the non-striker’s stump to catch Smith short. Perhaps Smith was convinced into going for the run as he played the shot from well outside his crease, but for a man who prides himself on his ability to thrive in high-pressure situations, this was a tame way to go.When India won the Durban Test on their previous tour, the defining delivery was the one from Sreesanth that leapt at Kallis’ throat and led to his dismissal. If India do go on to complete a famous win tomorrow, the defining deliveries could well be the ones to dismiss Amla in each innings. Opponents will consider Amla getting bowled without offering a stroke once as a bonus, but twice in a match is a bonus of the size investment bankers dream of.While Amla shouldering arms to a typical incoming Ishant Sharma delivery in the first innings was inexplicable, he was less culpable in the second innings. He saw Mohammed Shami drop it short and ducked, but the ball stayed low, so low that it crashed into the top of off. Amla had said after the first innings, “there are two types of leaves – a good leave and a bad leave.” You can’t classify this as a bad leave, but it cost Amla his wicket, and he trudged off after staring at where the ball bounced. While there has been plenty of intensity right through this game, there was also time for MS Dhoni to bowl a couple of overs when the light was fading towards close, making this the first time both teams’ wicketkeepers have bowled in a Test.India will hope they can take the remaining eight wickets tomorrow morning with the haste with which South Africa got them today. Pujara went on to his fourth 150-plus score of his short Test career before nicking behind off Kallis. Kohliclosing in on joining greats Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid as the only Indians to make a century in each innings of a Test. He couldn’t get there though, edging JP Duminy to the keeper on 96.Dhoni holed out for a typically busy 29, but it wasn’t as action-packed as Zaheer Khan’s cameo – french cuts and wild heaves were mixed in with a couple of cleanly struck sixes, all of which had the Indian dressing room laughing gleefully. Zaheer’s hitting meant India added 37 for the final two wickets, and pushed the target beyond 450.0:00

Khawaja 88 gives Queensland third straight win

An unbeaten fifty from Usman Khawaja, his fourth fifty of the tournament, helped Queensland to their third successive win in the Ryobi Cup, as they beat Western Australia by 35 runs according to D/L

An unbeaten fifty from Usman Khawaja, his fourth fifty of the tournament, helped Queensland to their third successive win in the Ryobi Cup, after beating Western Australia by 35 runs according to D/L in a rain-affected match in Sydney. The match had been reduced to 46 overs per side due to rain. This is the final round of matches, and as Queensland are at the top of the table, they will go through to the final, while Victoria and New South Wales proceed to the elimination final, with the winner facing Queensland for the overall final on October 27.Khawaja’s knock had powered Queensland to a comfortable 3 for 145 after 29.5 overs, and they were well on course to reaching the target of 213 before a second spell of rain put a premature end to the contest. Queensland, who were 36 runs ahead of the par score, were subsequently awarded the victory, and topped the table after finishing with five wins and just a solitary loss to Tasmania from their six group matches. The result left Western Australia rooted at the bottom, with just one win to their credit.Khawaja has been in fine touch of late, having struck three fifties on the trot against Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales, and his 88 today went a long way in helping Queensland establish a firm hold. He struck 12 fours and one six during the innings, and added 60 for the third wicket with Nathan Reardon, before the players were taken off the field.Western Australia, put into bat, had earlier got to a bad start, as the opener Cameron Bancroft was trapped lbw by Ryan Harris in the fifth over. Marsh however fought on, and slammed 5 sixes and 12 fours as he made a valiant 129-ball 119 – more than half of the team’s total. It was Marsh’s third consecutive fifty-plus score of the series, after making 54 against South Australia and blasting a match-winning 84 against Tasmania on Saturday. However, a 74-run stand with Hilton Cartwright aside, he did not receive much support from the other end. Ryan Harris, Nathan Hauritz, Matthew Gale and Ben Cutting each finished with two wickets, as Western Australia were restricted to 9 for 212 in their 46 overs.

Al-Amin six demolishes Cricket Coaching School

Al-Amin Hossain took 6 for 16 as Abahani Limited rolled over Cricket Coaching School for a paltry 35 to record a 212-run win in the Dhaka Premier League.CCS now hold the second-lowest List A score in Bangladesh’s domestic history after Chittagong Division were all out for 30 runs, more than a decade ago. This was also the second-biggest victory margin in the country, after Bangladesh’s 233-run loss to Pakistan in the 2000 Asia Cup in Dhaka.Al-Amin, a 23-year-old pace bowler, was in the forefront of all the carnage as he picked up all of the top five batsman inside the first 11 overs. Left-arm spinner Nabil Samad finished things off, picking up four wickets for only four runs in his 6.2 overs.Earlier, Abahani were all out for 247 in 49.4 overs with the help of a half-century from Sri Lankan veteran Indika de Saram. Opener Nazimuddin chipped in with 41 while Mosaddek Hossain struck 39. CCS did have something to celebrate however as left-arm spinner Bishawnath Halder took 5 for 38.Afghanistan allrounder Mohammad Nabi smashed 146 off 90 balls for Mohammedan Sporting Club as they beat Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club by 34 runs in Bogra. After winning the toss, Mohammedan put up 307 for 8, despite an ordinary start from Tillakaratne Dilshan, who had plodded to 25 off 34 balls, and Upul Tharanga falling early.Nabi led the recovery, adding 76 runs for the fifth wicket with Shamsur Rahman, before launching into the bowling attack. He reached his fifty off 49 balls, and took only a further 27 balls to convert it into a century. He blasted six sixes off his last 14 balls to go with three previous hits out of the park and 13 boundaries. Wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh gave good company as the sixth-wicket partnership amounted to 129 runs.In reply, Doleshwar recovered from an early loss with Mehedy Maruf and Tillekaratne Sampath adding 112 for the second wicket. Sampath made 68 but once the partnership broke, Mohammedan’s strong bowling line-up took over. Murad Khan and Dilshan took three wickets each while captain Mashrafe Mortaza picked up two wickets. In Rajshahi, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club edged out Kalabagan Krira Chakra in a tight game by 16 runs.Chasing 263, Kalabagan looked comfortable until the final 10 overs. Chamara Kapugedera, having made 46 off 31 balls, was bowled by Elias Sunny. Naeem Islam, standing in as captain for the injured Shakib Al Hasan, kept the score ticking over with a sedate half-century but the other end became a source of regular wickets as Dhanmondi’s experienced bowling line-up held sway. Shafiul Islam took three wickets while Sunny and Dilshan Munaweera picked up two each.Junaid Siddique’s 95 former the basis of Dhanmondi’s total, with the captain Mushfiqur Rahim chipping in with 43. The duo put on 90 for the third wicket to set up a strong target. Kalabagan’s other Sri Lankan recruit Jehan Mubarak took five wickets, his third five-for in List A cricket.

Magoffin leaves Somerset to nurse headache

Somerset were left facing a major headache after another batting collapse left them staring a third defeat of the season after just the first day at Horsham.

ESPNcricinfo staff22-May-2013
ScorecardSomerset had no answer for Steve Magoffin•Getty ImagesSomerset were left nursing a major headache after another batting collapse saw them staring at a third defeat of the season after just the first day at Horsham. Having dominated champions Warwickshire at Taunton at the end of April, they now resemble relegation candidates rather than title challengers.Director of cricket Dave Nosworthy admitted Somerset have an issue after his side were routed for just 76 by Steve Magoffin’s career-best 8 for 20. They lasted only 23.4 overs as Magoffin ran through them, including a blast of five wickets in 13 balls.”There are no excuses we didn’t get it right,” Nosworthy told “We won the toss and chose to bat but it didn’t work for us.”I think the lads are all very disappointed, you train as hard as you do and try your best but at the end of the day you have got to be responsible for your own innings and get out there and perform, which nobody has managed to do for us today.”Nor have many managed to perform at all this season. A poor show with the bat in the opening match at Durham seemed to be an aberration for Somerset as they found form at The Oval and then racked up over 400 against a much-vaunted Warwickshire attack. But a slip at Headingley, where a draw was declared with Somerset 61 for 6 in their second innings, became a harsh reality after a thumping defeat at home to Middlesex.Their batting order is ageing, inexperienced or out of form. They have been reliant on 37-year-old Marcus Trescothick and overseas player Alviro Petersen. Here, Petersen failed and Trescothick’s 20 was one of only three double-figure scores.Somerset can also not turn to their bowling attack for much comfort. The first three into the attack here, Peter Trego, Steve Kirby and Alfonso Thomas, have a combined age of 102. Together with Jamie Overton and Jack Leach – two youngsters whose development is essential for the club – they shipped 298 runs at over four an over to close day one 222 behind. They had envisaged progress at a similar rate themselves with the bat but had no answer for Magoffin who bowled 11 overs unchanged to produce the best performance by a Sussex bowler since Mushtaq Ahmed took 9 for 48 when the county clinched the Championship title against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2006.He started by bowling Arul Suppiah through the gate – Suppiah’s sixth single figure score in eight innings this season – then a touch of inswing proved too much for Petersen. But the real damage was done after James Hildreth was caught low down at slip in the 12th over. From 42 for 3, Somerset subsided to 43 for 7, with Magoffin taking three wickets in four balls in the 14th over. Trescothick was caught behind playing away from his body before Trego and Thomas fell in successive deliveries.Somerset’s last three wickets put on 33 to avoid total ignominy but there was no stopping Magoffin. After Jack Leach was caught behind, Magoffin bowled top scorer Jos Buttler for 22 to pick up his eighth wicket and record the best bowling performance at Horsham since Northamptonshire’s Vince Broderick took 9 for 35 in 1948.Chris Jordan took the other two wickets and Sussex openers Chris Nash and Luke Wells were soon putting conditions into perspective with a stand of 83.Thomas dragged Somerset back into contention when Nash, captaining Sussex on his home ground in the absence of Ed Joyce, played on before Joe Gatting edged his second ball to second slip.A typically fiery burst from Kirby was rewarded with the wicket of Wells while Mike Yardy, who hit three successive balls from Kirby to the boundary, squandered a good start when he was bowled by Peter Trego at the start of a new spell. But Sussex regained control in a fifth wicket stand of 85 between Rory Hamilton-Brown and Matt Machan before the latter was run out by Leach’s direct hit from midwicket.Somerset fought back after tea by taking five wickets, including Hamilton-Brown – whose 77 included 11 fours and two sixes and was his highest score since returning to the county before he became one of four victims for Thomas.Despite the clatter of wickets, ECB pitch inspector David Capel said he was perfectly happy with the surface.
