FIRST-CLASS DEBUT: Mashonaland v Midlands, at Harare Sports Club; 22-24 March 2002
TEST DEBUT: Still awaited
ODI DEBUT: Zimbabwe v Pakistan, at Queens Sports Club; 24 November 2002BIOGRAPHY (November 2002)Zimbabwe’s selectors have acquired a reputation in recent years for plunging young players into international cricket well before they are ready for it, and then dropping them quickly when they don’t make the grade, before leaving them for a year or two before returning to them – if at all. Hopefully Waddington Mwayenga will not suffer such a fate. There was much cynicism when Waddy, as he is usually called, became yet another virtually unknown 18-year-old to be fast-tracked into the national one-day squad to face Pakistan in November 2002. In the second of the five-match series, he was given a place in the team.It was a hard baptism against a Pakistani team that had only narrowly won the first match and was therefore determined to hammer the weak Zimbabwe bowling to build a total that was way beyond Zimbabwe’s reach. Waddy’s figures of none for 74 off nine overs do not show it, but he was the most accurate of Zimbabwe’s often wayward seam bowling attack, pitching a full length and bowling a good line. Yousuf Youhana and Shahid Afridi got after him, but he still maintained a reasonable standard of accuracy under pressure. Given his youth and inexperience, it was a promising start.Waddy’s father is groundsman at the elite St John’s College in Harare, although he did not know the game and was unable to introduce his three sons to the game. It was here that Waddy and his older brother Allan, a CFX Academy student in 2002, first had contact with the game. They used to hang around the school with their father and watch the teams practising in the nets. Coach Bill Flower, father of Andy and Grant, threw the ball to them and soon discovered they had talent. Waddy played no cricket at his junior school, Tomlinson Depot at the police headquarters, but Bill Flower took an interest in him, gave him some coaching and was so impressed with him that he included him in his Harare Stragglers team for players of his age. From the beginning Waddy was primarily a pace bowler. The Stragglers team went to Mutare for the Casuals Cricket Week there and was pleased to take seven wickets in three matches. Waddy won a scholarship to Vainona High School for three years, where he was the star of a very weak side against weak opposition, frequently taking seven or eight wickets in a match. In one match he took all ten wickets to fall, including two hat-tricks, and also scored 95, his highest in any match to date, before being run out by his brother! Then he won a much better scholarship to St John’s itself, sponsored partly by the school and partly by a Mr Carter, a businessman who took an interest in him over the years. His best school performance has to date been six for 14 against Watershed, although he has a number of other six-wicket hauls to his credit. He had already been noted by the national age-group selectors, and represented Zimbabwe at Under-14 and Under-16 level before progressing to the Under-19 side for two years. His most memorable match was an Under-19 World Cup match in New Zealand against Kenya, when he took five wickets for 21 runs. He has also been to Zambia, Namibia, South Africa and Singapore with age-group teams.Waddy also owed his introduction to club cricket to Bill Flower, who took him along to Old Georgians Sports Club at the age of 15, and he has played for them ever since. His best figures for them so far are four wickets for 35 runs against Harare Sports Club during the 2002/03 season. He has also played winter cricket for Shamva.Waddy feels his main strengths as a bowler are his ability to bowl a good length and line, wicket to wicket, coupled with swing away from the right-hander and movement off the seam. “I cut the white ball but really struggle with the red ball,” he says.Waddy is used to fielding in the deep, or at mid-on or mid-off. He is keen to develop his batting and become an all-rounder. His only captaincy experience to date was at Vainona, and he says he has no real ambitions for the job.Besides Bill Flower, Waddy pays tribute to Shane Cloete as a coach with the age-group and Zimbabwe A teams and Mike Seager, a former seam bowler himself, for his constant encouragement. His role model as a pace bowler is the Australian Glenn McGrath: “I think he’s an excellent bowler.”At present Waddy is studying for his A-levels and will continue at school for 2003. After that he wants to follow in Allan’s footsteps at the CFX Academy, and hopes by then that he will be a regular member of the national side. Given the talent he has shown so far, it is a definite possibility.Cricket heroes: Andy Flower.
Toughest opponents: “In my first one-dayer, Shahid Afridi. I really didn’t know where to bowl to him. Also Yousuf Youhana.”
Personal ambitions: “To bowl as well as Glenn McGrath.”
Proudest achievement so far: “Making the one-day side and being able to play cricket at international level.”
Best friends in cricket: Stuart Matsikenyeri, Hamilton Masakadza, Tatenda Taibu, my brothers.
Other qualifications: Studying A-levels.
Other sports: First-team hockey at St John’s and first-team soccer at Vainona.
Outside interests: “I like reading cricket magazines or any other sporting magazines.”

Nott’m Forest name Brennan Johnson price

Nottingham Forest reportedly value Brennan Johnson in the region of £8m to £10m amid interest from Brentford, according to The Athletic.

What’s the story?

Johnson has found regular game-time with Nottingham Forest’s first team hard to come by in the early stages of his professional career, playing just eight times for them, but he has caught the eye with a number of impressive showings out on loan.

The winger was loaned out to League One side Lincoln City and scored 13 goals, whilst also being on hand to provide 14 assists for his team-mates. However, his efforts still weren’t quite enough to see Michael Appleton’s side over the line in their bid for promotion, as they were beaten by Blackpool in the play-off final at Wembley.

Johnson has since returned to the City Ground and has been attracting interest from the likes of Brentford, Leeds United and Barnsley already this summer. The Bees have reportedly lodged a £3.5m bid for him, although that is well below Forest’s rumoured £8m-£10m valuation of the 20-year-old.

Forest are set to hold talks with Johnson over a new contract as they look to fend off interest from interested parties ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

It’s a statement of intent ahead of the 2021/22 season

Nottingham Forest endured a frustrating league campaign in 2020/21 and the club’s supporters must be eager to see them challenge much higher up the Championship table next season.

The Reds finished 17th in the table last season, which will have been tough to take for Chris Hughton, who has already shown that he can guide teams into the Premier League having won promotion with Brighton and Newcastle earlier in his managerial career.

Forest have a number of players who are being linked with summer moves away from the City Ground, with Joe Worrall catching the eye of Premier League side Burnley.

However, Johnson is one player who Forest are clearly keen to retain for the foreseeable future, and you can understand why as he could play an important role in their bid for promotion to the Premier League over the coming months.

With 13 goals and 14 assists to his name last season, he’ll certainly feel as though he’s more than capable of playing regularly for the Reds in the Championship, and this could be the breakthrough season that he’s been waiting for with Nottingham Forest.

Former City Ground manager Sabri Lamouchi had previously labelled Johnson as an ‘unbelievable player with the right mentality’, and it seems as though he’s starting to show glimpses of that exciting potential.

It would be a real statement of intent by Hughton’s side if they can keep hold of Johnson this summer, and it’s good to see them standing firm in their valuation of the youngster, as he’s a player who could easily be worth even more if he can hit the ground running and replicate the form he had shown in his loan spell with Lincoln.

The club’s steadfast approach in refusing to accept less than what they feel Johnson is worth, and planning contract talks to safeguard his future at the City Ground, may well have Forest fans delighted with the intent being shown in order to try and hold on to such a promising player.

Celtic: Sheffield United yet to receive offers for George Baldock

Sheffield United are yet to receive any concrete offers for reported Celtic target George Baldock, according to The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Baldock links

Baldock, who was wanted by Neil Lennon back in 2019, has emerged on the Hoops’ radar once again this month.

Reports suggested that Celtic would be willing to pay £5-8m for the 28-year-old, who has just 12 months left on his £10,000-a-week Bramall Lane deal.

Recent stories have claimed that Baldock is on a list of potential right-back targets, with Ange Postecoglou spending days watching footage of those targets.

He’s reportedly approved a potential deal for Baldock, however, it doesn’t look as if Celtic have made an official bid as of yet.

The Latest: No offers

The Athletic’s Richard Sutcliffe shared a story regarding the Blades’ transfer business on Friday.

He addressed both incomings and outgoings, admitting ‘there have been no concrete offers’ for Baldock – an interesting six-word update as you’d think Celtic may have made their move going off recent reports.

The Verdict: Celtic looking abroad?

Since Celtic’s interest in Baldock came out at the beginning of the month, the Hoops have been linked to two right-backs from Ligue 1 side Rennes.

Brandon Soppy and Sacha Boey are the full-backs in question, so perhaps the Hoops are looking to explore the European market over a swoop for Baldock.

It could make perfect sense, especially with Baldock not looking to depart Yorkshire. Right-backs are required at Celtic Park before the new season, but at this moment in time, a move for Baldock appears unlikely.

Wolves fans react to Goncalo Ramos links

Wolves are interested in 19-year-old SL Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos, according to a report from Portuguese outlet Novo.

They claim that the club are in ‘early talks’ with the Liga NOS outfit over the signing.

The lowdown on Wolves target Goncalo Ramos

Ramos is primarily a second striker rather than an out-and-out number nine.

After scoring 15 goals and providing six assists for Benfica’s B-team, he earned his opportunity at senior level, and he’s hit the ground running with six goals in his first 13 appearances.

Ramos has also featured eight times for Portugal’s Under-21s, including a substitute appearance in the final of the European Championship earlier this month.

Portugal, whose starting line-up for the game included Wolves loanee Vitinha, lost 1-0 to Germany.

Were he to join Wolves, he would be seen as part of their next attacking generation, along with Fabio Silva, a £35.6million signing last summer.

Fan feed Talking Wolves relayed the report, and here’s what the fans made of it.

Laxman, Ratra stake out West Indies

The West Indies left the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) yesterday evening with as many worries as a long-standing Caribbean prime minister. There was non-stop partying in two of the most popular stands on the ground after the second day of the important fourth Cable & Wireless Test against India, but the mood in the West Indies’ dressing room might well have been sombre. After staging a partial fightback in the morning, their efforts were thwarted initially by dogged resistance and later by confident strokeplay by two batsmen firmly entrenched in a record partnership.Vangipurappu Ventata Sai (V.V.S.) Laxman, whose initials have been affectionately amended to Very Very Special following two remarkable innings against world champions Australia, once more produced something of that calibre at a time when India were desperately in need of a revival. His unbeaten 124, which started half-hour into the morning, might not rank with his 167 in Sydney or his 281 in Calcutta, but in the context of the series, it was just as vital for India, who have almost certainly put themselves in a position where they cannot lose the match.Any century is very important and this, being my third, is also important. It was always a dream of mine to score a century in the West Indies and I am really thrilled, Laxman said.In the first two games I was getting into the 60s and 70s and not converting big scores. I thought I would just hang in there, added the 27-year-old right-hander who has often been criticised for not doing justice to his immense talent. It is a great honour playing for my country. It’s always been my dream to score consistently and I am really hoping to improve on my consistency in the future. In his company for almost five hours was the little wicket-keeper Ajay Ratra, who appeared to be a genuine tail-ender in his previous two Tests. This time, he was unruffled by nothing the West Indies bowlers sent his way, and he resumes this morning seven short of a hundred with India on an impregnable 462 for six.Bland statistics will reveal that India added another 236 runs and the West Indies managed only three wickets as was the case on the opening day, but to the purists, it might have been another day of absorbing Test cricket. The first session yielded a mere 46 runs when India were on the ropes; the second brought 65 when they were trying to regain their composure; and the third produced 125 when they were the ones throwing the punches.By then, a group of Indian supporters, here on a work attachment with the Antigua & Barbuda government and sitting in the Richie Richardson Stand next to the Press Box, were joyously making merriment as if it was a Hindu festival. They repeatedly saluted Laxman and Ratra, whose unbroken stand of 205 surpassed the previous seventh-wicket high against the West Indies of 186 between Dilip Sardesai and Elnath Solkar at Kensington Oval in 1971.Laxman, who spent 22 balls over his first run, was typically classy, his 14 boundaries executed with the timing and class that he displayed during his three previous half-centuries in the series. There were the nice, flowing drives and a rare hook before tea, but he was particularly severe after the day’s second break when he and Ratra tore into the bowling.Ratra, tidy behind the stumps but woeful with the bat in four innings in Trinidad and Barbados when his scores were 0, 2, 1 and 13, batted defiantly before growing in stature to unleash some authentic strokes of his own.His best was probably a hard pull off Pedro Collins, who later induced him into a top-edged hook to a vacant fine-leg.A few minutes before tea, Ratra also pulled Ramnaresh Sarwan just short of mid-on at a time when many felt the part-time leg-spinner should have been long introduced to break the growing partnership.Cameron Cuffy bowled just one over after tea, but there were no injury concerns over him. Nor were there any over Brian Lara who left the field after hitting the turf on his troublesome left elbow while trying to make a diving safe. The first session was especially encouraging for the West Indies, their bowlers showing aggression on a pitch that contained early moisture following heavy rain in the wee hours of the morning that threatened a prompt start.Three wickets went down in the space of an hour, including those of the two key overnight batsmen who were approaching landmarks.Rahul Dravid and captain Sourav Ganguly were hemmed in by tight stuff and eventually something had to give.Ganguly attracted the first real loose ball in the morning, but ended up slapping Cameron Cuffy’s long hop hard but straight to Wavell Hinds at point.Hinds, West Indies’ best fielder over the two days, especially on Day 1 when he made several sprawling saves in the outfield, gleefully accepted the catch with Ganguly five short of his 50.Dravid had attempted nothing rash for the 50 minutes in which he eked out only five runs to add to his overnight 86 until he chopped Dillon into his stumps. He stopped in disbelief, paused for a second and asked himself what he had done wrong, then kicked the turf before walking off with a 90-something next to his name for the fifth time in Test cricket. It was somewhat of a surprise that Anil Kumble emerged from the pavilion to take the No. 7 slot, perhaps two notches higher than he is suited for.Predictably, Dillon peppered him with a few nasty deliveries, one of which crashed into the grill of the helmet after Kumble completely took his eyes off the ball. Clearly stunned, he spat blood, but was brave enough to continue.Kumble lasted 20 minutes before he inevitably fended off another delivery on the body around the corner and into the waiting hands of Shivnarine Chanderpaul at backward short-leg.

Aston Villa: Fans flock to Emiliano Martinez update

Emiliano Martinez reportedly played a key role in convincing fellow Argentine Emiliano Buendia to choose Aston Villa over Arsenal, as stated by Chris Wheatley.

In a sparkling 2020/21 season, Buendia notched an impressive haul of 15 goals and 17 assists as he inspired the Canaries to the Championship title [Transfermarkt].

Never likely to avoid interest from significant Premier League clubs, the Argentina international is now set to join Aston Villa in a deal worth a reported £40m despite considerable interest from the Gunners [Croydon Guardian].

Further introspect has revealed that Martinez played a key role in this decision. Wheatley was quick to disclose why this came to pass, tweeting: “Same agent as Emi Martinez, negotiations swift and easy for Villa to complete”.

Furthermore, it is no coincidence that the two players are both currently on Argentina international duty, which may have also had an impact on Buendia’s decision [Birmingham Mail], and it’s little wonder that loads of Aston Villa fans took to Twitter to revel in the latest news of their latest signing.

Fleming and New Zealand entitled to respect after stunning comeback win

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming came into the National Bank Test Series wanting his side to be respected for its achievements, past, present and future, and today’s 78-run win to draw the series with England 1-1 went a long way towards ensuring that respect. It took some bold decisions, and some innovation, especially under the lights last night, but the stability provided by the impact players selected for the match, Chris Harris who scored an invaluable 71 in the first innings, Daryl Tuffey who took nine wickets and Andre Adams who took six, allowed Fleming to dictate on his own terms.Fleming was required to throw some caution to the wind to achieve that and at 19/4 on the first day of the Test his gamble was under question. The win was New Zealand’s first over England at home since 1984, Fleming’s 16th as captain, and while his batting contribution throughout the series was minimal he had the personal satisfaction of leading New Zealand to its 50th victory in Tests and also becoming the first New Zealander to take 100 catches.Nasser Hussain, the England captain, might not be concerned about the ICC Test Championship ladder, but Fleming had the satisfaction of taking New Zealand to fourth on the ladder, forcing England back to fifth. But reflecting on what amounted to a victory achieved in the equivalent of eight sessions of normal playing time, Fleming said that even when 19/4 he felt New Zealand were in the best position to make the most out of what the wicket had to offer. So it proved when he declared overnight and left England with 312 as a target in a minimum of 105 overs today.England went for broke and at lunch had scored a staggering 154/5, but the momentum was always with New Zealand, even after Fleming dropped Hussain off the fourth ball after the break. At one stage Hussain threatened to hold up the victory, but he ran out of partners as Nathan Astle slowed what had been a frenetic run rate, and then picked up a key wicket in Mark Butcher from a ball that exploded off the pitch and lobbed from Butcher’s bat to be caught at point by reserve fielder Brooke Walker. It was then Tuffey, the player of the match, Adams and Chris Drum, who had 11 Tests between them who undid England by taking three wickets each. Their bowling throughout the match, might not have been as tight as Fleming would have liked when he claimed too many boundaries were conceded, but they were better than England’s bowlers in the conditions and that made the difference.”They went for a lot of boundaries, but they took wickets throughout. I would have liked them to be a lot tighter,” Fleming said. The key wickets were Graham Thorpe, who got a faint edge to a ball from Tuffey to be caught by Adam Parore to become his 200th wicket-keeping dismissal, and Hussain who was squared up by Adams and offered him a caught and bowled chance which he pounced on.Getting runs in the third innings had been vital to New Zealand’s ultimate success because throughout the series England had denied them opportunities at vital times. England had been very professional and New Zealand had been up against it in the match and they needed to take risks.Hussain said afterwards that even when New Zealand were 19/4 he thought his bowlers had not bowled well. He said a gusty wind at the northern end of the ground had been a problem when New Zealand forced a draw here four years ago and it was a concern again in those circumstances.”We bowled poorly on that sort of wicket to let them get up to 200. The wicket was doing plenty all the way through,” he said.Batting on the third evening when the shadows were coming across the pitch had been difficult and New Zealand had used them well to have England 11/3.Hussain explained his concerns about having to field while New Zealand were batting under the lights last night.”They had set a base of 200 ahead and they were going to tee off as the ball got older. That’s how Astle wants to play, it suits his game and it suits Adams’ game. By that time the damage had been done, even if they had batted on a little bit this morning the game was always going to be a result on a wicket like that,” Hussain said.”I thought we bowled fine last night, when sides come at you like that you have to vary your pace.”The thing about last night was that some of our boys were struggling to see the ball.”I mentioned that to Venkat [umpire Srinivas Venkataraghavan] and Venkat fully agreed with me and said, ‘Yeah it is difficult, but in no time in the history of the game has any side been taken off fielding and as far as Test cricket goes and ICC regulations say you can’t take a side off fielding, speak to the ICC about it’, and I’ve got no problem with that,” he said.Hussain didn’t want to be labelled “a whinging English captain”.There had been some fascinating cricket played in the series, the cricket had been excellent but the lighting issue had to be looked at by people off the field.”The New Zealand side are very resilient, we’ve always known that. They’re a similar side to us, they’re hard to break down. I’ve always said in a three match series we have to be at our best all the time to beat sides and we were just off by one or two hours in this game and we got nailed,” he said. That is respect, just as Fleming wanted it.

Newcastle transfer claim on Tyler Roberts

Frank McAvennie has dropped an encouraging transfer claim on Tyler Roberts and whether he would fit in at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eyeing Roberts

As per Football Insider, the Magpies are closely monitoring the 22-year-old ahead of a potential move from Leeds United once the summer transfer window opens.

He is out of contract at Elland Road in 2022 and is yet to agree an extension, so the Whites may view a deal this summer as a good opportunity to cash in on him in order to gain some value from a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

The Latest: McAvennie claims Roberts would start at Newcastle

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie – who is now a pundit after playing for the likes of West Ham United and Celtic – has claimed that Roberts would be a starter under Steve Bruce at St James’ Park, believing that the Toon Army would instantly warm up to him. The 61-year-old said:

“If he’s not getting a game, I think so.

“If you’re not playing you have to ask to leave. If he goes to Newcastle he’ll be a starter straight away.

“They have great fans and they will love him up there if he hits the ground running.

“Roberts can ask for guarantees but the manager can’t give them. He can only give them if he’s playing well.

“You can’t tell a player he will always start because what if he starts playing badly? It’s a stupid statement.

“At his age, he’s got to be playing.”

The Verdict: Roberts would add to Newcastle squad

Roberts is certainly a player who could add something to the Magpies squad, and with the added experience of playing at Premier League level under Marcelo Bielsa, he would not have to adapt to the demands of the division were he to join Newcastle.

McAvennie’s point about his game-time is also pertinent – while the forward has played in 26 league games this season, only 14 of those have been as a starter.

Also, at just 22 years of age, Roberts should get even better over the next few years, while his added versatility is also a quality which could be very useful to have on Tyneside next season, especially with the amount of injuries the Magpies have incurred to key players such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

Premier League: Wolves predicted XI v Brighton

After such an inconsistent campaign, Wolves no longer have anything to play for this season.

Nuno Santo’s team have performed well below par and as they gear up to face Brighton this afternoon, they will do so from 12th in the table.

Ambitions of qualifying for Europe have fallen by the wayside but it’s not been entirely the manager’s fault.

Wolves have suffered from a mind-blowing number of injuries this term with Jonny sustaining two ACL problems and Raul Jimenez fracturing his skull.

Pedro Neto has broken his knee cap while Willy Boly will miss the game on Sunday while he recovers from the after-effects of the ongoing pandemic.

With all this in mind, how will Wolves line up when they welcome Brighton to Molineux this weekend?

We’re tipping Nuno to make three changes to the side that drew with West Brom last time.

There is no place for Willian Jose in the side as Fabio Silva gets an opportunity to build on the goal he netted against the Baggies.

There is one change in the attack where Owen Otasowie drops out after his rare chance last weekend. With that in mind, Daniel Podence comes back into the fray in a wide position.

Vitinha gets another chance as the attacking midfielder after shining so bright at the Hawthorns.

The other change could be an enforced one. Wolves are currently sweating over the fitness of Rayan Ait-Nouri and if he can’t make the game, Max Kilman might come into the team.

The left-back replaced him towards the end of their clash with Albion but the £14k-per-week earner hasn’t actually started for the Old Gold since February 7th.

Boly misses out so it’s a centre-back pairing of Conor Coady and Romain Saiss again.

Joao Moutinho is back to full fitness so he replaces Leander Dendoncker in midfield for the third and final change in this XI. He has been absent for the last two matches with a minor ankle problem.
