Back-to-back Ashes confirmed for 2013

England and Australia will play each other in ten consecutive Tests across two series home and away in 2013-14, and that could be followed by a further five-match series in 2015, after it was confirmed that the dates of the next Ashes series Down Under have been brought forward by a year. The situation, which last occurred in 1974-75, has been forced upon the two boards by the competing demands of the 2015 World Cup, which is also scheduled to be held in Australia and which, had the 2014-15 Ashes gone ahead as planned, would have required England’s cricketers to remain in the country for five months.A proposal to bring England’s next home series, in 2013, forward by a year was thwarted by the competing demands of the London Olympics. England’s subsequent home Ashes summer is now expected to take place in 2015, a year earlier than the 2016 date originally proposed, with the traditional four-year home-and-away rotation expected to kick in from then on.”It’s always been our aim to break that cycle of two huge events in the same winter,” Steve Elworthy, the ECB’s marketing director, told ESPNcricinfo. “To ensure that the teams have better preparation time for the World Cup, this is the only solution, but I also think it’s absolutely manageable. I believe the brand is strong enough, as we’ve seen this year. The home series is critical from our perspective to make sure our grounds are full, but when England head Down Under, they will be trying to replicate the performance that they’ve just produced.”Although the new dates have yet to be included into the Future Tours Programme, the proposed shift of England’s home series to 2015 is potentially significant, as it takes the series away from the competing interests of football’s Euro 2016 tournament, which would overshadow the build-up in June and July. Instead, the only other major sporting event in 2015 is the Rugby World Cup, set to take place in England at the end of the cricket season in October.A major consideration for CA was the prospect of a new round of TV rights negotiations, as the current deal is set to expire in May 2013. With India due to tour in 2011-12, followed by South Africa, England and the World Cup, the board is anticipating four consecutive seasons of high-quality international cricket.”The Ashes have an x-factor element that excites the Australian public,” CA’s spokesman Peter Young told The Sydney Morning Herald. “The Ashes make turnstiles spin and they drive the ratings up. In terms of the next media contract, it’s an ideal starting point because it’s a lucrative blue chip series and all the networks would give their eye teeth to get hold of it.”

Liverpool eye up Lautaro Martinez move

Jurgen Klopp and Julian Ward could bring a new striker to Liverpool this summer in the shape of Lautaro Martinez.

What’s the word?

That’s according to the latest reports from TuttoMercato, who claim that the 24-year-old has decided that he wants a move to a “big club with many titles” and the Reds have him in their crosshairs as a result.

The Italian outlet suggests that Martinez will not be playing his football for Inter Milan next season, with the Nerazzurri looking to free up some budget.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

The fee will of course depend on the way he ends the season but is reported to be around €80m (£67m).

It is said that Arsenal and Atletico Madrid had made their interest known, though the Argentinian striker was not willing to entertain a move to either side, with his sites set on joining a club that has won “many titles.”

Possible destinations suggested by TuttoMercato are Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester City or Bayern Munich.

An elite club

Thanks to their historical success and silverware as of recent, Liverpool are in an elite and forthright position to sign the “sensational” £76k-per-week talent.

Klopp would be right to do so, with Martinez notching up some impressive numbers in regards to his goal returns. In 42 appearances this season, the Argentina international has three assists.

Lautaro has demonstrated that he can be more creative, having created 11 assists last season, when Lukaku was the main man in Milan.

Being an out-and-out striker, he would offer a presence up-top that Liverpool have not had since Luis Suarez.

Capable of adapting to the style of Lionel Messi, his teammate in the national team, Martinez could find a new partnership with Mohammed Salah.

Of recent, Salah has established an identity as a top goalscorer, and if he would be willing to collaborate with the 24-year-old in Liverpool’s frontline, we could well see a deadly duo in the Premier League.

This is a transfer that few clubs have the opportunity to pull off, so it would be worth a look at least from the perspective of Jurgen Klopp.

Man United: Elanga was crucial vs Norwich

Manchester United eventually managed to secure all three points in a challenging clash with Norwich City this afternoon, with the game ending 3-2 – something which sees Ralf Rangnick’s side manage to get themselves back into the top four race.

Indeed, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur lost their Premier League fixtures today, which gave the Red Devils an opportunity to get right back into the race for Champions League qualification.

However, they almost squandered their chance, but for Cristiano Ronaldo delivering not one but three goals against the bottom of the table Canaries.

Despite the hosts having more possession (61%) and over twice as many shots on target, Man United struggled to hold off Norwich who managed to bag two goals at Old Trafford.

The game started well for the home team, with Ronaldo opening up the scoring in the fourth minute, before doubling his tally in the 32nd minute – putting Man United comfortably ahead.

However, Norwich set out to respond and were able to break down United’s defence with ease in the final moments before the half-time whistle, with Teemu Pukki scoring in first-half stoppage time.

In the second half, the Canaries continued their pursuit to make a comeback and succeeded when Pukki scored his second in the 52nd minute to level up the scoreline, however, Ronaldo would go on to find the winner and complete his hattrick in the final quarter of the game.

One player who was key to the attacking threat Manchester United imposed on Norwich this afternoon was Anthony Elanga, with the youngster having a huge influence on the game – undoubtedly being Rangnick’s biggest winner on the day.

According to SofaScore, the winger hailed a “great talent” by Zlatan Ibrahimovic only came second to Ronaldo for the highest rating in the team – 7.8 – and for good reason.

The 19-year-old dominated in his position, taking 65 touches of the ball, making three key passes and four tackles, as well as recording a 92% pass completion rate – not to mention capping his impressive performance with an assist for the first goal.

Rangnick must now capitalise on the progress they have made in the league table following their top four competitors’ losses this weekend, now being just three points behind Spurs with a great opportunity to improve their Champions League chances in the remaining games of the season.

Selectors must take final call on resting players – Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has said that for a rotational policy to evolve in his team, the selectors must take the final call and assure players of their place in the side when rested

Cricinfo staff15-Aug-2010Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has said that for a rotational policy to evolve in his team, the selectors must take the final call and assure players of their place in the side when rested. “From team point of view, we can recommend rest to certain players, especially fast bowlers because of their load. But the final call has to come from selectors, otherwise there is too much responsibility on the individual player.”And when you have a rotational policy, I think it is important that the player has the confidence that if you are rotated out of the team, you get first choice back. It doesn’t matter if your replacement scores a hundred or a double.”That assurance given to a player, Sangakkara said, was crucial to preventing any mistrust. “You get first choice back because you were the best in that position and that’s why you earned your rest. I think all these things must be set in place before you execute a rotational policy, otherwise there can be mistrust and misinterpretation and ultimately that can fall to pieces and it can affect the side.”Both Sangakkara and his counterpart MS Dhoni acknowledged bowlers were in greater need of rest. “The workload on the bowler can be too much if you see specially those playing both the Test matches and the ODIs. Because the workload on them is a bit too much, that really challenges the limit. For batsmen, they don’t have to put in the same amount of effort compared to a bowler,” Dhoni said.”It is better off personally if you can rest someone and prevent him from getting injured. You know that actually does not hamper his form. The kind of momentum that one gets because of good performances can just continue and he will always be in a positive frame of mind.”India have rested several key members of their side for the ongoing triangular series in Dambulla.

Gold hints at early Spurs team news

Rodrigo Bentancur could make his Premier League debut for Spurs today…

What’s the word?

The north London outfit welcome Southampton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening as they continue to push for a place in the top four.

And football.london reporter Alasdair Gold – who is one of the most reliable when it comes to anything Lilywhites related – believes the deadline day signing is in line to start from the off.

‘The Spurs boss could be tempted to hand first starts to his two new signings Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, who both made their debuts against Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday,’ he wrote.

‘Bentancur is in a fitter position to start against Southampton, having played two near full matches for Uruguay during the international break. Kulusevski has not started a match in almost a month, so much will depend on his level of fitness.’

Debut inbound?

This is certainly plausible as manager Antonio Conte will be without the services of Oliver Skipp, who remains on the treatment table with a groin injury.

You’d imagine that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is going to start but the place next to him is up for grabs and as Gold alludes to, it could well be the Uruguayan who gets the nod over Harry Winks.

That is something that’ll provide the Spurs faithful with excitement as they’ll get to see their new man in action after a very promising cameo in their FA Cup win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday night.

Described as a “very solid all-round midfielder” who is “great at breaking play up and can pick a pass as well” by The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, the 24-year-old was said to have made a “big impression” in his 13-minute cameo.

In the absence of Skipp, there won’t be a better alternative than Bentancur, it’s just whether or not his fitness will hold up after returning late from international duty in South America last week.

Plenty of fans around N17 have grown tired of Winks and his underwhelming displays in a Spurs shirt, so the former Juventus midfielder could offer something fresh in midfield.

The fact that Gold can see him starting tonight is enough to get very excited indeed.

AND in other news, Conte must ruthlessly axe Spurs’ £18m-rated “nightmare” today, he’s holding them back…

ten Doeschate tilts the balance for Essex

Two wickets in the last 11 overs from captain Glen Chapple gave Lancashire areal boost on a hard-fought opening day of their County ChampionshipDivision One match against Essex at Old Trafford

ScorecardTwo wickets in the last 11 overs from captain Glen Chapple gave Lancashire areal boost on a hard-fought opening day of their County ChampionshipDivision One match against Essex at Old Trafford. After the visitors were invited to bat despite a covering of grass on thetrack, Ryan ten Doeschate top scored with 85 as they closed on 251 for 6. Openers Billy Godleman and Jaik Mickleburgh, who shared 73 for the first wicket, both hit 39, off 74 and 95 balls respectively, but they fell to left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan either side of lunch.Kerrigan had left-hander Godleman caught at mid-wicket by Stephen Moore in the26th over and trapped Mickleburgh lbw two overs into the afternoon session toleave the score at 86 for two in the 32nd.Matthew Walker (42) and Ten Doeschate later shared 66 in 17 overs for thefourth wicket before the former chopped on to Sajid Mahmood after tea. There was a hint of swing for Lancashire’s bowlers – certainly after the ballwas changed midway through the morning by the umpires – but not as much as hasbeen on offer early in previous Championship fixtures here.Runs did not flow for Essex, however, because the likes of Chapple, Mahmood,Daren Powell, Kerrigan and Kyle Hogg all bowled with control throughout theday. Mark Pettini and Walker added 44 for the third wicket in 20 overs before Hogggot had the former well caught low down by gully fielder Mark Chilton. At thatstage the visitors were 130 for 3.That united Walker and all-rounder Ten Doeschate. They navigated their side totea with the addition of another 39 runs, playing well straight and through thecovers. Ten Doeschate reached his 50 off 52 balls in the early evening sunshine but hisalliance with Walker was broken when the former Kent man was cramped for roomtrying to cut Mahmood. That left Essex at 196 for 4.England hopeful Ravi Bopara has been named in the Essex side and will replaceunbeaten Grant Flower when Essex take the field on day two. Bopara was at Downing Street today with the rest of England’s victorious World Twenty20 squad.

Jamaica thump Canada by 63 runs

Hosts Jamaica recovered from their defeat to Ireland on Saturday to overpower Canada by 63 runs to extend the winless streak for the North Americans in the Jamaica Cricket Festival. The Jamaicans were propped up by their top-order batsmen Brenton Parchment, Danza Hyatt, Donovan Pagon and John Ross Campbell, who all chipped in with significant scores to lay the foundation for a strong score.Parchment went after Rizwan Cheema, smashing 17 runs off the sixth over to push the Jamaicans to 51 without loss at that point.Hyatt, who topscored with 48, struck ten off the next over, from Hiral Patel, and there was no let-up for the tourists. Cheema eventually got Hyatt, after an explosive 33-ball 48, and Parchment departed soon after.Campbell and Pagon then took up the mantle towards the middle of the innings, posting 52 runs for the third wicket.Andre Russell and Carlton Baugh pushed up the scoring during the closing stages to finish with an imposing 175 for 4. Parth Desai bowled well to finish with 3 for 21.Canada’s reply was wrecked by Krishmar Santokie’s spell of 3 for 7 in three overs. Bevon Brown and Tamar Lambert picked two wickets each, to push Canada out of the game, and it was left to captain Ashish Bagai to strike an unbeaten 51, and taken them into three figures.Jamaica’s coach Junior Bennett was happy with the team’s improved performance and expressed satisfaction with the contribution of the young players in the squad such as Campbell and Kemar Marshall. “We are pleased with our performance throughout the festival. We are happy with the performances of the youngsters that we introduced this year and we were much better with the bat today,” said Bennett.”The openers gave us a good start and the batsmen did well to put them on the back foot and put away the poor deliveries.”Canada’s coach Pubudu Dassanayake was disappointed with the performance of his team. “We didn’t do too well at all when they made 175 it was pretty much unreachable for us but it’s good to see Ashish (Bagai) still getting some runs. That’s the only positive about this. We are now hoping to have a better time at Sabina Park,” he said.
