The surprise leader by example at Liverpool?

There are two types of leader on the football pitch, we are often told. The first is the loud, charismatic figure who roars at his troops, urging them forward with a wild swinging of the arms. The second is the quiet one. The one who goes about his business with as little fuss as possible, but leads those around him by his mere presence.

No one had considered Luis Suarez a leader. If anything, the forward was very much the opposite. Suarez needed to be led.

However, the Uruguayan’s performances in the Premier League this season mean that he is fast becoming this second type of leader: the leader by example. But this is the last phrase that one would have associated with Suarez time last year.

The 21st of April 2013. That was the day when Luis Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic. The immediate reaction by many was that Suarez wouldn’t play for Liverpool again.

He just couldn’t.

He’d already done enough damage to the reputation of the club after being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra. Dalglish had supported the Uruguayan throughout the affair. And Dalglish had fallen on his sword. The ownership simply couldn’t allow the club to be dragged any further into the mire.

And they were given a way out. Arsenal offered £40m for the forward last summer. But John W. Henry knew where he wanted to take the club, and he knew the quality that Suarez possessed. How different a season it could have been for both if Liverpool had buckled.

It’d be difficult to overstate the role that Suarez has played in his team’s unlikeliest of title challenges. He’s the top scorer in the Premier League with more goals (29) than games (27). And he also leads the charts for assists with 11. In terms of key passes per game, Suarez is only bettered by Mesut Ozil and David Silva, two players who you’d expect to make more key passes given the positions in which they operate and their shared penchant for the through ball.

However, Suarez’ contribution is not only about the direct. We must consider the indirect also. Having your best player on the pitch and your hardest worker as the same man provides Liverpool with a potent combination.

Often, the most talented don’t feel the need to work. They know they’re good, so why should they have to constantly prove it? Work is for those with lesser capabilities. The gifted’s energy is reserved for the special, it’s the average who need to do the work.

However, Suarez has a motivation rarely found in those with the greatest talent. He adores work. He needs it. Work gets him the ball back, time and time again. And it’s work that gives him the opportunity to do the special more regularly.

Any team that includes a player with this kind of incessant work rate can only be better for it. The attitude is contagious. Teammates are inspired to increase their effort through sheer guilt.

However, when this kind of work rate is exemplified by the team’s most talented player, the potential benefits are exponential.

It creates a new norm. If a player as talented as Suarez does x amount of work, then x becomes the very least that is expected of everyone else.

This kind of leadership by example is of great benefit to Brendand Rodgers. The Liverpool manager need only point to Luis Suarez in order to communicate what is expected to his players.

If Arsenal had managed to acquire Suarez, it’s very likely that they’d still be leading the league on virtue of his goals alone. But what’s more, it’s also very difficult to imagine Arsenal folding as often as they did if they had a player like Luis Suarez on the pitch.

As it’s transpired, Suarez has become a leader by example and Liverpool are top of the league with six games to go. This time last year, it’s hard to know which would have seemed more unlikely.

Shrewsbury’s struggles continue

It’s only October some of our more optimistic fans saying and in a sense they are correct, it is still early days but Shrewsbury’s problems are plain for all to see.

We have failed to score a goal in our last three league games, have lost 3 of our last four competitive games, two of those being at home and we currently sit 2 points of the relegation zone going into the biggest derby of our campaign. Hardly encouraging is it?

In my last few posts I have pointed out Shrewsbury’s need for a striker constantly and it really is the hot topic at the club at the moment, it appears as though everyone other than Graham Turner has a solution to the problem.

As a general rule, if you’re not going to score then you need to make sure the opposition aren’t going to either. Shrewsbury centre back Darren Jones came out last week and admitted that the defence are currently giving away sloppy goals and this is causing us to not get the results we need and as a fan I couldn’t agree more. Moments of hesitation or lapses in concentration at the back have been at fault for a number of goals this campaign and with the strikers really not doing their jobs we need the defence to be doing there’s.

Sunday’s game against Walsall is the Saddlers first visit to the Greenhous Meadow and its sure to be a fiery encounter. Despite their fantastic start Walsall have not registered a win in their last four competitive outings and will be desperate to get themselves back to the winning ways. The game is being broadcast on Sky and this will no doubt spur on players for both teams as they will be eager to impress in front of the cameras.

Turner has fared well in local derbies since he took over two years ago but this will be a different game than the ones we were used too in League Two. We are coming into this on the back of two consecutive home defeats and morale is going to be low.

It’s going to be a very difficult game and as current form would suggest we should be happy with a point but as a fan against a local rival I want nothing more than a win. Will this be the case? We’ll have to wait and see.

Southampton should sign Chris Smalling if Man United sign Toby Alderweireld

According to reports in The Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is hoping to complete one more signing before the Russia World Cup gets underway on Thursday with a £50m move for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld, and their Premier League rivals Southampton should be watching developments closely.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun report that Mourinho is desperate to land the Belgium international and is already in talks with Spurs to get a deal over the line, with United willing to pay £50m for the 29-year-old as long as it is structured in a way that suits them.

The Sun says that Mourinho sees his defence as a problem position despite currently having Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo to choose from there, and signing the north London club’s contract rebel would go some way to strengthening the backline.

Alderweireld would likely be the Portuguese boss’ first-choice centre-back given the fact that he has previously established himself as one of the best in his position in the Premier League, but his arrival at Old Trafford would surely bring into doubt the futures of the likes of England duo Smalling and Jones.

Why should Southampton be monitoring the situation?

Well, having conceded 57 goals in their 38 top flight fixtures last term and only narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship, Saints manager Mark Hughes, who has been urged to keep a £80,000-a-week star at St Mary’s by the fans, may well want to bring in an experienced centre-back this summer to work with the likes of Wesley Hoedt, Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek.

The south coast outfit are still yet to replace Jose Fonte or Virgil van Dijk – who were both big characters and leaders in the backline – and perhaps Red Devils defender and 6ft 4in tall Three Lions colossus Smalling could be the answer.

The 28-year-old made 46 appearances in all competitions under Mourinho during the 2017/18 campaign, but the arrival of Alderweireld could be enough to push him through the exit door – especially if he wants to be playing regularly – and to a club like Southampton.

Liverpool fans react furiously to Klopp comments

It is funny how quickly things can change in football, especially at the top level.

Liverpool were absolutely flying when they beat Manchester City on January 14.

Things have since taken a turn for the worse at Anfield, however, with the Reds losing their last two matches against Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion.

The 1-0 defeat at Swansea occurred in the Premier League last Monday, before the team suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at home to West Brom in the FA Cup on Saturday night.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claimed on Monday that the return of club captain Jordan Henderson was ‘very important’ at this stage of the campaign.

However, the Liverpool fans are not convinced. Indeed, a lot of the supporters are furious that a higher standard of player has not arrived this month.

The Merseyside giants splashed £75m on Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk earlier this month, but are yet to sign a replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

Will we see another Manchester United v Man City match like these?

As Manchester City have fallen into wealth, the rivalry between the two Manchester clubs has intensified. The noisy neighbours of Manchester United have got Old Trafford rattled of late, putting their dominance to the test. The Manchester derby has never failed to entertain.

With both sides being kept apart in the Semi-Finals of the Capital One Cup this year, the Final could be set to be covered in red and blue scarves, flags and other merchandise, as Wembley might host the two Northern rivals.

If the Final does present fans with an all Manchester clash, neutrals will be sure to tune in to watch the excitement, having witnessed late goals, twists and turns and one-sided games over the recent years.

David Moyes’ first encounter of this rivalry didn’t go the way that United fans hoped, falling to a 4-1 defeat at the Etihad. United fans travelled across the city to their neighbour’s ground and found their side lacked the clinical edge that Manuel Pellegrini’s men showed. Neutrals will be hoping for a similar encounter to the thrilling match at the Etihad Stadium that saw United clinch a 3-2 win after Vincent Kompany’s sending off for a two-footed tackle. Or the fixture that saw Robin van Persie bend in a free-kick in the 90th minute to give United all three points at the Etihad.

The list of games goes on, with both of these huge clubs always delivering quality results. Citizen fans’ favourite fixture has to be the 6-1 win at Old Trafford for Man City. United were awful and their neighbours were another class. City manager at the time, Roberto Mancini went on to win the league on goal difference that year and no doubt that 6-1 performance made a real statement about his side’s firepower up front.

With the way that each team are going this season, both managers will be looking to take the Capital One Cup trophy back to their side of Manchester. David Moyes will be looking to lift the trophy in an attempt to please the fans with some silverware and to continue the dominant tradition at Old Trafford, whereas Manuel Pellegrini will be looking towards equalling their rivals record of the treble as they press on for the league while also being strongly tipped to win the Champions League, as well as the Capital One Cup.

Both teams will be expected to reach the Final, and no doubt football fans of all clubs will tune in to watch this Manchester derby as the excitement that surrounds the Capital One Cup reaches fever pitch.

Ferguson berates Shelvey for angry tirade

Sir Alex Ferguson has responded to the controversial sending off of Jonjo Shelvey at Anfield on Sunday, and also the 20-year-old’s reaction which saw him berate the United manager on the touchline.

“Jonjo Shelvey’s sending off was a clear red card, there was a dangerous attempt to go for the ball. Jonny Evans went for the ball and got it, and I don’t think there was any other decision referee could make,” Ferguson said.

“He blamed me! But he is young and he will realise the stupidity of it.”

Shelvey apologised to Ferguson for the incident, but claims the United manager had influence over the referee’s decision.

Tweeting after the match, Shelvey said: “I apologise to the fans for getting sent off but no way was I pulling out of that tackle in a game of that importance. I’m sorry. I have also apologised to Sir Alex, just where I come from people don’t grass people up to get someone sent off.”

When leaving the pitch, it is thought Shelvey said to the United boss: “You control the ref, and the game.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers came to the defence of his young midfielder, claiming referee Mark Halsey had made the wrong decision.

Rodgers said: “I’m bitterly disappointed because I thought the best team lost. Our performance in the first half was outstanding, but what you can’t control are the decisions of the referee.

“The players were outstanding and we dominated most of the game, but I know that if Jonjo Shelvey got sent off then Jonny Evans gets sent off as well.

“There were a number of poor decisions that went against us. They cost us the game. It was one of those days when we never got a decision that helped us.”

Three players Leeds should sign with Marcelo Bielsa connections

According to Sky Sports, Leeds United are in advanced talks to appoint former Argentina and Chile manager Marcelo Bielsa as Paul Heckingbottom’s successor.

The 40-year-old was sacked by the Yorkshire outfit last week after winning just four of his 16 Championship matches at the helm, and it is looking more and more likely that he will be replaced by the experienced 62-year-old, who has become renowned for his use of an elaborate 3-3-3-1 formation during his managerial career.

The Argentine boss is currently unemployed having been sacked by Ligue 1 outfit Lille in November following a poor start to the 2017/18 campaign having only taken charge last summer, and his arrival would certainly excite the fans, who believe the club is on the verge of announcing their first signing following a big development.

He has managed the likes of them, Athletic Bilbao and Marseille on the domestic front – as well as his time on the international stage – and while he may potentially be dropping into the second tier in England, he will know individuals from his time at those clubs that would be a great fit at Elland Road as the Whites look to finally mount a serious promotion push and return to the Premier League next season.

Here are three players with Bielsa connections that would be perfect for Leeds…

The French defensive midfielder – who can also play as a centre-back – came through the Marseille academy and was handed his first-team debut for the club by Bielsa on the opening day of the 2014/15 campaign having impressed his manager during pre-season.

Sparagna made four appearances that year and was involved in and around the first team, but that changed when Bielsa left in 2015 and the 23-year-old now finds himself at Portuguese outfit Boavista.

With strengthening potentially needed at both centre-back and in central midfield this summer, Bielsa should look to bring the Frenchman to Elland Road, and he would be an upgrade on Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park.

One of Leeds’ – and Bielsa’s – priorities this summer will be to bring a new centre-forward to Elland Road, given they are still yet to effectively replace Chris Wood following his departure to Burnley last year.

The likes of Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Pawel Cibicki and Caleb Ekuban came in but failed to fill the void, and the 62-year-old Argentine may well have his eyes on Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Llorente if he does get the Whites job.

Bielsa worked with the 6ft 5in striker during the 2011/12 season at Athletic Bilbao when he netted 29 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions – although he was frozen out by the club the following campaign following a contract issue – and seeing as he is out of favour at Spurs he may well be ready to launch an ambitious move to link up with him once again.

Bielsa was responsible for bringing Aduriz back to Athletic Bilbao from Valencia in 2012, and it proved to be a move that worked out for both parties as he scored 18 goals in 44 appearances in all competition in his first season.

While the Argentine boss left the La Liga club, the centre-forward has remained there since and even though he is now 37 years of age, the goals certainly haven’t dried up – he ended the 2017/18 campaign with 20 goals in 48 outings in total.

Given his age and the fact that he only has one year remaining on his contract, Bielsa may feel that the Spaniard could be tempted by one last challenge in his career, and he would love to bring the veteran attacker to Elland Road given he has all of the attributes to be a success in the Championship.

Joe Cole shares remarkable Chadwell Heath story on West Ham almost landing Pep Guardiola

While the West Ham United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been pleased with the recent upturn in form under David Moyes, it’s safe to say they are pining for years gone by. Indeed, while many of our punters clad in claret and blue realise that survival is key this season, many of them are discussing some of the wonderfully exciting Irons sides over the years.

With that in mind, imagine the interest at reports emerging from the Sun. Within their exclusive interview with former Hammers favourite Joe Cole, the West Ham academy graduate reveals the club came close to landing current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

One of the finest midfielders to ever grace the game during his playing days, Guardiola reportedly came close to a move to east London in 2001 after leaving the Blaugrana, with former Hammers boss Glenn Roader apparently disclosing that information with Cole at Chadwell Heath.

“Glenn said, ‘We can sign Guardiola — what do you think?’, revealed Cole.

“What do I think? We are West Ham, he is Pep Guardiola — we have to sign him, that’s what I think.”

“Glenn obviously liked him but thought it might stifle Michael Carrick’s progress and I think he was hinting that I might suffer. I would love to have played with Pep. He has a genius football brain.”

As you can imagine, our east London locals our wondering just what life could have been like if Guardiola really had joined…

Ex-Man United coach: no European football could be costly

Manchester United boss David Moyes has been warned by Sir Alex Ferguson’s old assistant coach that missing out on Champions League football could be costly in the club’s pursuit of new players.

The Premier League champions have endured a difficult opening to the season, which has left them 11 points adrift of the top four and completely out of the title race.

With a number of areas of the Red Devils’ squad in serious need of strengthening – which will be further highlighted when experienced stars such as Nemanja Vidic leave in under six months’ time – a major summer spending spree at Old Trafford has been mooted.

Moyes is said to be looking at a number of top players, but with rivals from both England and abroad also interested in their targets, it may become difficult for United to get in the calibre of player the need.

Phelan feels that his old club still have pulling power, but that getting into the Champions League could be decisive in who they can sign this summer:

“It might turn into a situation where David Moyes has two shopping lists, he’ll have one for being in Europe and one for not,” he is quoted by The Metro.

“Playing in the Champions League is always an issue. You’re always going to be in competition with other football clubs for big players, whether you’re in Europe or not.’

“The big players want to go to the big football clubs and Manchester United certainly is one of those.

“The attraction to play for Manchester United will still be there though. They’re making the sign that they’ll plough money into the market this summer and pay big salaries, so it’s an interesting time.”

West Ham receive injury boost

Andy Carroll is set to make a miraculous return to action next week after defying West Ham medical staff, according to The Daily Mail.

The England international forward was substituted in his debut for the Hammers, and it was revealed that he has suffered a hamstring strain.

The burly forward was expected to be on the sidelines for up to six weeks, but Carroll has responded to rehabilitation better than expected, despite only picking up the ailment 12 days ago.

Carroll has reportedly targeted a return to action in West Ham’s game against Sunderland at Upton Park a week on Saturday, in what would be a massive boost for the newly-promoted side.

Carroll played a part in all three goals in the 3-0 win over Fulham on his debut, and has a point to prove after being frozen out by Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.
