The Athletic journalist drops Leeds transfer update

The Athletic’s Adam Crafton has dropped a fresh update on Leeds United’s plans for the rest of the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Writing initially via his official Twitter account, Crafton said: “Leeds won’t do loads this summer but still want young centre mid + closing on Bamford extension.”

And then via a piece for The Athletic, he added: “This summer, therefore, had always been intended to be a little more measured, particularly as several of last summer’s deals are spread across several years. In this summer’s market, Leeds’ spending will be more reserved but sporting director Victor Orta has now closed two deals.

“It is not expected to be the end of the business, as Leeds are also searching for a young central midfield player with the potential to develop under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa. As things stand, it is unlikely to be the Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who has represented Uruguay at the Copa America.”

Bielsa may be frustrated

Having only seen Amari Miller and Junior Firpo come through the door thus far – the former will hardly be expected to make an impression on the first-team either way – Bielsa may be slightly worried at where things stand with Leeds in the transfer window.

Having seen reports for a number of months linking them with the likes of Nahitan Nandez and Rodrigo de Paul, news that Leeds want a younger central midfielder, and that it won’t be the Cagliari midfielder, will surely frustrate the Leeds boss.

The Whites could do with some more first-team quality signings in the middle of the park, both as competition for the likes of Kalvin Phillips or even to ease out someone like Mateusz Klich.

Younger signings with an eye to the future is all well and good, but Bielsa will feel that next season in the Premier League they could really make a go of finishing in a European place having finished inside the top half in their first campaign back in the top-flight.

That requires a bit more work on Orta’s part like last summer when he snapped up the likes of Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Rodrigo and Raphinha to come straight in and boost the starting line-up.

Firpo’s arrival solves one problem at left-back, but they need a couple more at least. It’s exactly why Bielsa may be worried with this latest transfer update.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a dream De Paul alternative in this star…

Harris continues to chip away at Canterbury records

Chris Harris moved up the all-time Canterbury batting pecking order with 82 against England today, an innings that lent some credibility to what was shaping as a disappointing total

Lynn McConnell07-Mar-2002Chris Harris moved up the all-time Canterbury batting pecking order with 82 against England today, an innings that lent some credibility to what was shaping as a disappointing total. As it was, he helped ensure his captain Gary Stead could declare at 212/8, meaning England have yet to bowl a side out in New Zealand. In the process Harris eased himself past Canterbury icon Graham Dowling into fourth on the all-time Canterbury list with 3704 runs, behind Paul McEwan, Rod Latham and Barry Hadlee.Harris said team coach Michael Sharpe generally kept the players up with any statistical milestones but he had not been aware of his movement today. So far this summer he has scored 605 runs at 121.00, the most runs in the season to date in New Zealand, two ahead of New Zealand Test opener Mark Richardson.”You never felt like you were in on the pitch. But the longer you were there the better chance you gave yourself,” he said. With the new ball, and the bounce and pace off the pitch, it was much more difficult than later. There was a lot more grass on the pitch than usual at the ground, he said. When he joined opener Robbie Frew with Canterbury 39/4, they decided they would just try to bat for a while to get themselves back into the game.Harris did receive a big bonus when an appeal against him for leg before wicket from the first ball he faced was turned down by umpire Robert Anderson. He said Frew had said to him the swing was gone so he decided to leave a wider one alone only to have it come back at him.”I was pretty happy with his decision,” he said. What his lengthy stay at the crease did allow him to do was get a solid first-hand look at the advance Andy Caddick has made as a bowler. As youths in Christchurch the two were often pitted against each other and they appeared in age-group sides together before Caddick decided to pitch tent in the English camp as he was able to do thanks to his parentage.”He was a pretty similar height back then, and very much a handful for anyone facing him. He was always a player you would rather have in your side than in the opposition at lower grade level,” he said.

England’s hopes of having Darren Gough available for the second Test against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston starting on May 30th were dashed when it was announced that he has suffered a recurrence of an injury to his right knee and has been ruled out of the whole series. The pace bowler first incurred the injury in the one-day series in New Zealand during the winter and had surgery to rectify it. At one time it was thought that he might be back in time for the first Test at Lord’s this week, but then Edgbaston became a more realistic target. However, Gough was still uncomfortable when attempting a return to cricket last week and it has been decided that he will need further corrective keyhole surgery. This means that he will be out of action for a month and the earliest he is expected to be fit for a return to the England side is the start of the NatWest Series of one-day internationals at the end of June.Coach Duncan Fletcher acknowledged that Gough’s absence will be a serious blow to England’s chances. “This is a big loss to us as we were really looking forward to have Darren fit and raring to go for this series, but we’re hoping he will have fully recovered in time for the one-day series.”Dav Whatmore, coach to the Sri Lankans, believes the loss of Gough will be as significant to England as that of Muttiah Muralitharan from his own side at Lord’s. “I’m sure the England team will miss him just as much as we will miss Murali. They cancel each other out, that is how important he is to England. He just seems to spark them off.”Both Murali and Gough have fantastic figures, but you have to look beyond that because their value to the teams cannot be over-emphasised.”Gough will undergo what is a routine operation to clean out floating debris from inside the knee in Sheffield tomorrow. The he will have to begin a programme of rehabilitation just as he did two months ago when he had a similar operation to repair a cartilage in the same knee.

Wolves keen on signing Joao Palhinha

Wolves won’t have a great deal of money to spend this summer. It’s an unfortunate eventuality but ultimately one which cost Nuno Santo his job in the Midlands.

It would appear that the only way to spend big this summer will be to sell some of their prized assets.

What’s the word?

One player who has been on the radar of the Old Gold for a while now is Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha. They’ve been interested in the 25-year-old since last year but, despite winning Liga NOS with Sporting this term, he could be heading for the exit door.

According to Record (via Sport Witness), Wolves are the strongest candidates for his signature but a concrete proposal is yet to be made.

A separate report stated that Everton are also chasing his signature, which means that his agent, a certain Jorge Mendes, could be key in luring him to Molineux instead.

Ideal Neves replacement

Palhinha may not possess the long-range shooting of Ruben Neves, but he’d be a stellar replacement for the 24-year-old in the middle of the park.

The Wolves midfielder looks likely to leave this summer, with the Old Gold needing to sell before they can spend this summer. The Athletic claimed that a fee of £35m will be enough to tempt the Molineux hierarchy into selling the Portugal international.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

If Neves does move on, it would be a huge blow. He has been the glue holding Wolves together for a number of years now, thriving in English football after becoming the most expensive signing in Championship history.

Wonderfully composed in possession of the ball, Palhinha is also a tough-tackling general in the middle of the park.

Those are two attributes synonymous with Neves. During this season, the 24-year-old completed 84.4% of his passes and registered 2.4 tackles per match.

Comparing those numbers to Palhinha, the Sporting stalwart was successful with just over 83% of his passes in Portugal, winning 3.3 tackles per game.

Neves is more productive in the final third but, if the club’s new manager requires someone who can win the ball back on a more regular basis, then Palhinha is their man.

Standing at 6 foot 3, the £35m midfielder’s game is well suited to the Premier League. His physical qualities are outstanding, bullying opponents to one side and then starting attacks.

The Portugal international’s 1.3 shots per game indicate he can also still get forward, which is important when considering how he can replace Neves.

A destructive force, Palhinha would come at a high cost. However, if they are going to lose one of their best players from the Nuno era, they will have to spend.

Goleiros: Vanderlei, Vladimir, John e João Paulo
Laterais: Daniel Guedes, Matheus Ribeiro, Victor Ferraz, Zeca e Caju
Zagueiros: Cleber, David Braz, Gustavo Henrique, Luiz Felipe, Noguera e Lucas Veríssimo
Volantes: Yuri, Yan, Alison, Renato, Thiago Maia, Léo Cittadini, Fernando Medeiros e Leandro Donizete
Meias: Lucas Lima, Vecchio, Vitor Bueno, Jean Mota, Longuine, Thaciano e Matheus Oliveira
Atacantes: Ricardo Oliveira, Copete, Vladimir Hernández, Kayke, Rodrigão e Arthur Gomes

Celtic: Whelan urges Leeds to make Edouard move

Former Leeds United striker and now Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan has urged the Whites to make a move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

The Lowdown: Edouard set for exit

It seems as if Edouard has now played his final game for the Hoops. The Frenchman started in the club’s final game of the season against Hibernian on Saturday, with the Easter Road clash ending in a stalemate.

Reports in recent months have suggested that the 23-year-old wants to leave Celtic Park this summer, regardless of who comes in to replace Neil Lennon. Leicester City are reportedly confident of securing Edouard’s services, but Whelan wants Leeds to make their move over the coming months.

The Latest: Whelan urges Leeds to make move

According to Football Insider, Leeds are putting plans in place to sign a new, young striker and have set aside £20m-25m to bolster their attacking ranks.

Speaking to Football Insider about the subject, Whelan staked his claim for Edouard, who Lennon described as ‘magnificent’ earlier this season. The 46-year-old said:

“We’ve got to look long term here.

“You want someone you can improve, can grow into the side, grow into the football club and be there for three to four seasons. There’s already a player out there – Edouard.

“I keep saying it, go get him. He’s at Celtic. He fits that mould, he’d be competition. There’s many, many clubs interested in him, why shouldn’t we be? You can get him at a really good price.

“We’ve got to start looking at other people. Can we take away the players that other teams are trying to get?

“Victor Orta’s not failed us yet. What we do need is that striker. That’s the right criteria that we need to bring into the football club.”

The Verdict: Hoops need a proven replacement

With Edouard seemingly on his way out of Parkhead, we feel it is pivotal that Celtic bring in a proven replacement this summer. The Frenchman has netted 57 Scottish Premiership goals in 100 appearances, with 16 of those coming in the current campaign.

Mohamed Elyounoussi is the only other Hoops player to net double figures this season in all competitions, and he’s set to return to Southampton over the coming weeks.

Immediate firepower seems to be what is required under the new manager, so it looks set to be a crucial summer window for new Celtic CEO Dominic McKay.

Newcastle outcast Atsu wanted

Two clubs reportedly want to sign Christian Atsu from Newcastle United once the summer transfer window opens.

The Lowdown: Atsu frozen out

Atsu barely played for the Magpies in the 2020/21 season – in fact, he made only one appearance, coming on for just 10 minutes in their 1-0 home win over Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup second round (Transfermarkt).

Therefore, both club and player will surely be looking for a move away from the northeast for the Ghanaian, with two clubs reportedly interested in his signature.

The Latest: Two clubs want Atsu

As per Sports World Ghana, both Huddersfield Town and Al Hilal are interested in signing Atsu once the market opens. His current deal with the Magpies expires on June 30, so he will become a free agent after that assuming that a new contract is not offered to him in the meantime.

That seems highly unlikely as Steve Bruce has already told him to find a new club, and with regards to Huddersfield, manager Carlos Corberan has tasked the Terriers’ management to sign him up, with a meeting between the Championship club’s sporting director and the player’s representatives expected to take place in the coming days.

The Verdict: Atsu must leave

A deal for Atsu to leave Newcastle would suit all parties involved.

With the player currently earning £30,000 per week, the Magpies would save a lot of money by getting rid of the Ghana international, and they already have players like Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser who can play in his position on the left flank.

As for Atsu himself, he needs to be going out and playing regular football, especially being 29 years of age, and Huddersfield could well be able to offer him that given that Corberan has already expressed his strong desire to sign him.

With his current contract at St James’ Park running out next month, he will likely be able to move on as a free agent anyway, so any potential deal shouldn’t be too complicated.
