Arsenal confirm Saka injury before Liverpool

Arsenal have suffered a major blow ahead of their Premier League clash against Liverpool tonight with the news that Bukayo Saka has yet to train with the team.

The England international was forced out of international duty due to injury, and stayed behind at the Emirates Stadium to recover.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Liverpool, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: “Well he hasn’t trained with the team yet. He’s been doing some individual work. We had to pull him out of the England squad unfortunately.

“He’s feeling better, but he hasn’t trained with the team yet.”

Saka has been in exceptional form for the Gunners this season, scoring six goals and providing a further seven assists across all competitions.

It’s no surprise that the £54m-rated youngster has earned glowing reviews for his performances this season, with Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand raving about him after his star showing against Southampton in a 3-1 win earlier this year.

The former England defender said: “He was tremendous to watch. His skill – the maturity with which he plays is so impressive as well. He can play one and two touch. Plays off both feet. ‘His decision-making, for me, that is – he plays as someone who is well beyond his years. He makes the right decisions at the right times and you can see in the way he sets things up. He set the tone for the first goal. He’s so comfortable wherever he plays.

“He’s a real talent, someone, I’m sure, who is definitely in the thoughts of Gareth Southgate because he’s such a valuable player in terms of his ability to play in and cover different positions.”

Make no mistake about it, being without Saka – one of the club’s standout players of the season thus far – against Liverpool will be a major blow to Arteta and Arsenal’s chances of clinching an all-important win tonight. His absence will no doubt leave the manager very worried.

Adam delighted at news on Gers’ Davis

Charlie Adam has shared his delight after Glasgow Rangers confirmed that Steven Davis has signed a new one-year contract at Ibrox.

Adam delighted at Davis news

Davis was set to be out of contract at the end of the campaign but, despite being 36 years of age, the Gers have decided to keep him at the club for another 12 months.

The 55-time Scottish champions shared the news on their official Twitter account, and former Rangers midfielder Adam responded by saying this was “great news”.

Big news

Adam is far from a popular figure among many supporters, but surely Gers fans will have trouble disagreeing with him on this one. While Davis does not have long left in his career, he boasts plenty of experience; and with 40 appearances in all competitions so far this term (Transfermarkt), he has played a vital role in the Gers’ 2020/21 success.

With 45 goals and 94 assists throughout his time in the game, he can contribute directly to goals, but his importance to this Rangers side cannot be measured solely in that way. He is a cool, calming influence in the middle of the park, and he deserves all the accolades he continues to get. Who knows, he may even get himself another deal at the end of next season as well.

In other news, many Rangers fans are livid at this pundit’s comments.

Sunderland can do better than Leadbitter

Sunderland’s season has been quite the adventure so far.

From sacking Phil Parkinson and hiring Lee Johnson, to finding new owners and winning the Papa John’s Trophy, drama has never been far away from the Stadium of Light.

On the chalkboard

Sunderland’s chances of securing promotion to the Championship look as good as they have done at any point in the last few years.

Johnson has engineered seven wins from their last nine in League One and after Peterborough lost to Blackpool in midweek, the Mackems will have an opportunity to go second on Saturday.

Sunderland will have to hope that Posh drops points again and that they consequently beat 21st placed Bristol Rovers.

In order to elevate their chances of doing so, they must begin to move on from Grant Leadbitter. The midfield has been a loyal servant to the Mackems, but since returning from a dislocated shoulder, he has been holding them back.

Leadbitter’s display at Wembley in the Papa John’s Trophy final was far from disastrous but with Tranmere enjoying the better spells in the first half, he was made to look rather slow by their constant counter-attacks.

Unfortunately, the 35-year-old looked off the pace in the 1-1 draw with Lincoln as well. He was hooked off with around 20 minutes remaining having lost 67% of his duels and being dribbled past on two occasions.

That has been a familiar tale for Leadbitter in the last few weeks.

The solution

Carl Winchester and Josh Scowen showed the value of being more athletic in Sunderland’s 2-0 win over Portsmouth a few weeks ago.

With Leadbitter missing, the midfield duo stepped up the plate admirably. During that clash, the pairing won a combined 12 defensive duels but it was Winchester who really stood out, completing 100% of his take-ons and proving successful with 82% of his passes.

On top of that, no one won more than his four ground duels throughout the entire match.

With that in mind, Johnson could do far worse than pairing the two together once again against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Failing that, he could finally bring Luke O’Nien into the middle of the park. He has been featuring at centre-back over the last few months but looked strangely out of sorts in that position against Lincoln. He made a mistake in the first half and then could have done better for the equaliser.

With Leadbitter faltering, perhaps he could finally move forward? Only time will tell.

Sunderland fans slam McFadzean

Many Sunderland fans were critical of the display of Callum McFadzean despite their 2-0 win over Rochdale in League One on Saturday afternoon.

Dion Sanderson and Charlie Wyke got the only goals of the game in the first half at the Stadium of Light as Lee Johnson’s team aim to push for promotion back to the Championship.

However, while there were some very good performances in the red and white shirt, McFadzean’s flattered to deceive for several SAFC supporters.

The former Sheffield United man found himself booked very early on in the match for a clumsy foul and, although he did manage to keep a clean sheet, his afternoon did not get that much better.

McFadzean failed to record a single dribble, tackle or accurate cross from left-back, and he also lost possession of the ball no fewer than 17 times, the most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch (Sofascore).

Sunderland fan reaction to McFadzean display

These Black Cats supporters slammed his performance on Twitter, with one fan even going as far as to claim that the 27-year-old was ‘unbelievably poor’:

“2nd goal came against the run of play. McFadzean continues to be the worst player alive. Think Younger looks uncomfortable at right back, not his fault though. Excellent crosses and headers for the goals. We have to get at them more 2nd half #safc”

“I’m yet to see McFadzean do anything of note, guy gets rinsed up by everyone on the wing. #SAFC”

“McFadzean is so bad. Been caught out several times already today #SAFC”

“Younger is a natural centre back and today we had square pegs in round holes again. We’ve got away with it last few games, if we go to Pompey with that back 4 we will lose the game. I would go as far to say McFadzean is the worst player I’ve ever seen in the red and white.”

“McFadzean was unbelievably poor today . Nearly gave away a goal when he went to jump for a ball and it bounced over his head! He really is poor should give Vokins a run”

Spurs dealt double blow ahead of Chelsea clash

Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League clash with arch-rivals Chelsea this evening, Jose Mourinho has been cruelly dealt some troubling injury news…

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick’s update ahead of tonight’s game against Chelsea, two of Spurs’ injured players have now seemingly been ruled out for the remainder of February.

Giovani Lo Celso has been absent since pulling up with a hamstring problem in their 2-0 defeat to Leicester City on December 20th, and the reliable journalist claims ‘there is little prospect of the midfielder returning for at least three weeks.’

While Sergio Reguilon is another who is currently on the treatment table at present.

Kilpatrick has also delivered an update over his progress as he too is out with hamstring trouble, though just like the Argentine, he’s ‘set to miss most of February.’

Cruel blow

Given Spurs’ current form, this will quickly become a nightmare for Mourinho as he could really do with both players right now. Indeed, they have lost back-to-back matches and now face the Blues, who have a bit of a new manager bounce after appointing Thomas Tuchel.

Spurs have missed both players and their attacking influence substantially over the last few weeks and would have hoped to have them back as soon as possible.

Across their two defeats to Liverpool (3-1) last week and then Brighton (1-0) on Sunday, Mourinho’s side have only amassed an xG of 0.47 as per Understat.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s strike against the defending champions was a rare scorcher from long-range, so without that, they’d have failed to score in successive outings.

Lo Celso ranks third for key passes per 90 (1.88) but when you factor in those that have played at least ten league games, he sits top of the tree, so clearly, Spurs have lacked his presence in attacking midfield as he’s been the man providing those valuable chances to Kane and co.

Similarly, only Kane (11) and Heung-min Son (six) have delivered more assists for Spurs than Reguilon (three) in the Premier League this term, as per WhoScored.

No left-sided full-back is managing as many as his 0.7 successful crosses per 90 either. And that’s a problem as they attack most down this flank (37%).

It’s no wonder that Spurs have struggled to score in the absence of the duo, so to be without them throughout the rest of the month with games against Everton in the FA Cup, league leaders Man City and for the return of the Europa League knockout stages, is potentially one cruel blow to their chances of stopping the rot anytime soon.

Even when Kane hopefully returns next week, he’s going to struggle to score goals himself if Spurs aren’t creating chances, so having Lo Celso and Reguilon sidelined for such a long time is certainly going to keep Mourinho up at night.

AND in other news, Mourinho must unleash “exciting” £26m-rated beast tonight, he could be Spurs’ game-changer…

Abraham can be Saints’ dream Ings successor

Southampton have been linked with a move for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham ahead of the summer transfer window and, if he were to join Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, he could be the dream successor to Danny Ings.

According to Eurosport, Southampton and West Ham have both enquired about signing the 23-year-old in the summer, as he has found himself on the fringes of the Chelsea squad since Thomas Tuchel arrived as manager.

The report suggests that the Blues will try and sign Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland in the summer, which would free up Abraham to leave, and Southampton could then look to bring him to the south coast.

Hasenhuttl’s side could find themselves without their own talismanic striker in the near future, with Ings yet to agree to a new deal with the Saints and his current contract set to expire at the end of next season.

It has been reported that the former Liverpool man would be keen to move to a club which can offer Champions League football next season, and considering Southampton’s woeful form in 2021 so far, it seems as if he will have to achieve that with another Premier League club.

Therefore, if he were to leave, Southampton would desperately need to bring in a replacement who can score goals, with Che Adams suffering a crisis of confidence in front of goal at the moment, his barren streak currently standing at 15 games.

Abraham has shown himself to be an excellent goalscorer in his time in the Championship and the Premier League, as he was prolific with both Bristol City and Aston Villa in the second tier before being given a chance under Frank Lampard in the top-flight.

He has 30 goals and 12 assists in just 80 appearances for the Blues but has fallen behind both Timo Werner and Olivier Giroud in the pecking order under Tuchel, whilst the potential arrival of Haaland could unfortunately spell the end for his time with the west London club.

Despite starting just 12 games in the top flight this season, Abraham has still managed six goals, whilst he also has six goals in other competitions, so clearly knows where the back of the net is.

Back in 2019, Rio Ferdinand compared the youngster’s impressive performance against Lille in the Champions League to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, and if he could produce performances like that on a consistent level with Southampton, he would surely prove to be a very good signing indeed.

Therefore, if Southampton cannot convince Ings to sign a new deal, then perhaps they should turn their attention towards the £36m-rated Abraham, as he could be a superb replacement for the 28-year-old striker in Hasenhuttl’s side.

And, in other news… Silver Lining: Key Southampton injury blow can be the making of 21 y/o Saints beast

Steve Howey suggests Leeds should re-sign Eddie Nketiah

Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, Steve Howey has suggested Leeds United re-sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal in this January transfer window.

The England U21 international of course spent the first-half of last season on loan at Elland Road, where he made 19 appearances in all competitions and notched five goals, before returning back to Mikel Arteta’s side in January.

The £18m-rated ace hasn’t quite kicked on in this current Premier League campaign however with just one goal in 12 top-flight games, and Football Insider claim that a second loan move for the forward could be on the cards for Leeds, although it isn’t a priority at this stage.

And speaking to FootballFanCast, Howey delivered his verdict on a potential Elland Road return for Nketiah.

He said: “It’s clear he’s not really in the team (at Arsenal). (Bukayo) Saka seems to be the man who’s kind of getting everybody’s attention at the moment. Nketiah certainly, was one that was, but it’s an opportunity for him to go there.

“We all know how exciting Leeds are under Bielsa. What a force they are going forward, they’ve shocked everybody. I’ve watched them a couple of times this season and I’ve absolutely loved watching them.

“Again, for Nketiah, from now until the end of the season, and he’s been there before and knows what it’s about, absolutely. Why not?”

Whilst his loan spell may have end up being cut short, Marcelo Bielsa was always quick to hail Nketiah’s talents.

Speaking after the English starlet’s return to the Emirates, the Leeds boss said: “He’s a specialist great player with a lot of resources and our play is a collective way of playing and one player needs to adapt to this style. For this reason when we felt he was part of the team we thought that we were going to feel the same and that he would continue with us.

“He didn’t take this decision but he is a great player, an excellent professional and he had very good behaviour, he is a gentleman in every sense.”Whilst it may not have ended the way anyone would have wanted, Leeds could land a superb alternative to Patrick Bamford were they to bring back Nketiah this month.

Manchester United: Fans flock to Williams update %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Many Manchester United fans have been talking about the latest update involving Brandon Williams, which emerged on social media on Tuesday.

Liam Kennedy from the Shields Gazette has reported that Newcastle United are understood to have agreed the framework for a deal to sign the Man Utd defender on loan in the January transfer window. The report claims that Williams has been told that he can leave Old Trafford on a loan deal this month and Steve Bruce’s men are now leading the race to sign the Englishman.

The report also states that Newcastle are just one of the clubs after Williams, as Ralph Hasenhuttl also has a liking for the defender. Williams is thought to be one of the potential loan deals that Bruce could be looking at. Apart from the Man Utd man, the Magpies are also looking to bring Jetro Willems back to the club.

Williams, currently 20, has fallen down the pecking order at left-back behind Luke Shaw and Alex Telles and as a result, he has struggled for minutes. The Englishman has made just one appearance in the Premier League, playing twice in the UEFA Champions League and twice in the League Cup (as per Transfermarkt).

In the 2019/20 season, Williams had played more often for the Red Devils, playing 17 league games and contributing to a couple of goals. He also played eight times in the UEFA Europa League for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men (as per Transfermarkt).

Solskjaer praised Williams last season and said: “He played a square pass into Mount [which led to their second goal] and he probably felt a bit responsible, but for the rest of the half he was absolutely outstanding. The kid has been out for a while and not played, and had the eye injury, but his character and personality out there was great, he kept going and kept going.”

This update about Williams caught the attention of many Man Utd fans, who made their opinion clear about the news.

What did Man Utd fans make of this update about Brandon Williams?
