Saints: Elyounoussi failed vs Leeds

It was an important result for Southampton on Saturday where they managed to secure their first league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.

A second-half goal from Armando Broja was enough to secure the three points for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, putting them in 15th place in the league table with seven points prior to Sunday’s fixtures.

Despite the victory, there was one player that was involved against Leeds that failed to impress.

The player in question was Saints winger Mohamed Elyounoussi, who started the game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side before being taken off and replaced by Nathan Tella late on in the match.

During his time on the pitch, Elyounoussi failed to even have one shot on target while he was also unable to provide one accurate cross or long ball.

His dismal afternoon was capped off by a miss at the back post where he was unable to get his head to what would have been a simple tap in. What made matters worse was the fact he lost possession on 19 occasions and won just ten out of the 21 duels he was involved in. That ultimately earned him a rather disappointing overall match rating of 6.3/10, making him the lowest-rated Southampton player on the day that started the match, according to SofaScore.

Given how Elyounoussi, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, was taken out of the starting XI in Southampton’s 3-1 defeat against Chelsea, we feel as though the winger failed to repay the faith that Hasenhuttl showed in him to put him back in the starting XI against Leeds.

Southampton signed Elyounoussi back in the 2018 summer transfer window from FC Basel before sending him out on loan to Scottish club Celtic in the next summer window.

Overall, the 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £10.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made just 26 appearances for Hasenhuttl’s side, scoring four goals and providing two assists along the way.

During his time at Celtic, Elyounoussi was once described as being a “passenger” by Hoops podcaster Paul John Dykes, which is how we feel he was like in the game against Leeds.

Moving forward, if Hasenhuttl decides to stick with Elyounoussi in the starting XI for their upcoming Premier League clash against Burnley next weekend, the winger will have to put in a solid display to show that he is worthy of being a regular starter for the club, or else he could find himself back on the bench, potentially for an extended period of time.

Celtic: Ajeti lets them down vs Dundee Utd

When Kyogo Furuhashi was ruled out of action for a period of seven matches following the international break, you knew Celtic would be in trouble.

However, after Albian Ajeti found the net three times in the following two games, it looked as though they’d found their solution.

The Swiss was taking his chances and was finding himself in the right place at the right time.

Sadly, the £4.5m striker has now reverted to type in the last few weeks with some disappointing performances.

All of that has culminated in Celtic’s worst start to a season for 23 years. They lost to Livingston last week and seven days later, they were drawing at Parkhead against Dundee United 1-1.

Their away form under Ange Postecoglou has been disastrous. They are yet to win a game on the road in the league under his stewardship so their home displays were a saving grace.

Yet, after picking up a solitary point on Sunday, there was little to be positive about.

Ajeti was one of the worst in what was a dismal showing from the former West Ham attacker once again.

He spurned some simple opportunities to score versus Livi and the same eventuality occurred when they took on Dundee United. He’d find himself in valuable positions but was unable to find the net.

A glorious opportunity fell his way in the opening period but he somehow missed the target from just four yards out. Another chance was missed late in the second half when Ajeti headed wide from six yards.

The 24-year-old was isolated once again and offered little apart from appearing in the penalty area. It was a showing in stark contrast to Kyogo, someone who is willing to press and run in behind.

During the course of the match, Ajeti had just 17 touches of the ball, 28 fewer than goalkeeper Joe Hart, but he didn’t do a lot with possession once he had it.

In fact, he completed only 75% of his passes, making six in total during his 90 minutes on the field.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-duffy-mccarthy-brady-knockaert” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

That’s a number you’d traditionally expect from a centre-forward who’s been substituted at half time so to see it from someone who lasted a full game is dismal.

If things weren’t bad enough, his frustration shone through with a total of three fouls.

This was a horror show from Ajeti, a player who is likely to be immediately axed from the team once Kyogo and Giorgos Giakoumakis are back fit.

The Pakistan senate’s standing committee on sports has moved a resolution for an “immediate change” in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management following a hearing at parliament on Monday.”After having three meetings with the PCB, it is our opinion that the affairs of PCB are in disarray and the current management does not have the capabilities and vision for any improvement in the game of cricket,” said the resolution. “We, the sports committee, recommend to the government, that the present management be changed immediately and induct competent people to run the PCB.”Senators Fauzia Zaman, Kausar Firdous, Enver Baig, Sabina Rauf, Nilofar Bakhtiar, Tahir Mashhadi and Haroon Akhtar were the seven members of the sports committee who signed the resolution, which was passed after what was described by a senator as “yet another fruitless meeting” with a senior board official.Saleem Altaf, PCB’s chief operating officer, was the only senior board official to turn up for the meeting though the committee had also summoned Ijaz Butt, the chairman of the board.”The PCB chairman stayed away from the meeting with a lame excuse that he was having a meeting with ICC officials in Lahore,” Baig told Pakistan daily, the . “The chairman was lambasted by the committee members for missing the hearing.”Baig said the committee members were angry at the lack of competence among the PCB top brass and hinted at meeting president Asif Zardari, who as PCB’s patron-in-chief has the authority to appoint a new board chairman.”It has become crystal clear that the people running cricket in our country are the wrong people for the job,” he said. “That is why we would strongly recommend to the patron of the board to bring in competent officials in the PCB.”The resolution against the PCB caps a happening tussle between the committee and the board which has come under a lot of fire from the senators. At a previous meeting with the PCB top brass last month, the senators were highly critical of the ‘mess’ in Pakistan cricket.Following that meeting, Butt addressed a press conference in Lahore in which he said the committee had no powers over national cricket affairs. “They have no power to tell us to do something,” Butt had said. “They can criticise us as much as they want but the only one who can take decisions like that is the patron of the board.”In response, the senate’s sports committee filed a privilege motion against the PCB boss.

Everton transfer news on Diaz

Everton fans have had plenty to say about some transfer news which has emerged on summer target Luis Diaz.

As per  Correio da Manha (via Sport Witness), the Goodison Park faithful are still one of a number of clubs in English football interested in signing the FC Porto ace, who they currently value at €50m (£42.5m).

The winger would be a marquee signing for the Merseyside club, given that he has already managed to score six goals and make one assist in eight games in the Portuguese top flight so far this season (Transfermarkt).

However, a lot of Toffees supporters seem to think that signing him would be unrealistic for them, given that they only spent a mere £1.8m in the summer window, and that some teams in the UEFA Champions League are likely to want his signature.

These Blues were blown away when the transfer news was shared on Twitter, with one EFC fan claiming that Diaz is a ‘quality’ player:

Saints should’ve sold Shane Long

Southampton enjoyed a fairly successful transfer window and targeted young players, but they decided to sell Michael Obafemi rather than letting veteran striker Shane Long leave.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side brought in exciting young talents such as Adam Armstrong, Romain Perraud, Valentino Livramento and Thierry Small, whilst fringe players such as Wesley Hoedt and Mario Lemina finally left the club.

However, in a move that seems to conflict with their transfer methods, the Saints decided to sell Obafemi, with the 21-year-old completing a permanent move to Swansea City on deadline day, whilst Long remains at the club.

After the signing of Armstrong, as well as the loan addition of Armando Broja, you could argue that both Irish forwards would have struggled for regular game time in the first team this season, but Hasenhuttl has suggested that he wants a bigger squad than last year.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, it seems strange that Martin Semmens was willing to accept as little as £1.5m for the young forward, especially after his impressive performances in pre-season suggested that he could make an impact in the first team this season.

By comparison, Long spent the second half of last season on loan with Bournemouth in the Championship and managed just two goals, whilst his last Premier League goal came in a 3-1 win against Aston Villa in December 2019.

Therefore, it seems baffling that Long is still at St Mary’s, especially when you consider that he reportedly earns £60k per week with the Saints, which makes him one of the highest earners in Hasenhuttl’s side.

The 34-year-old looks way past his best and it seems likely that he will leave at the end of this season when his contract expires, so you feel that Semmens could have done more to sell him this summer and Saints fans will surely be fuming that he was kept instead of a promising youngster such as Obafemi.

If Long remains a bit-part player for the Saints throughout this season before leaving on a free, you could definitely argue that it was a mistake on Semmens’ part to keep him after what has been a very promising window overall.

Kieran Devlin drops Giakoumakis update

The Athletic’s Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin has dropped a worrying update on summer signing Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The Lowdown: Giakoumakis’ absence

The Greece international penned a five-year deal at Parkhead on deadline day and made up for Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths’ late exits. He joined from VVV-Venlo at a cost of up to £2.5m, but the forward is yet to feature in green and white.

The 26-year-old last kicked a competitive ball back in May, and it seems as if the wait may go on for his long-anticipated Celtic debut.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-13/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin ran a fans’ Q&A on The Athletic prior to the 1-0 defeat to Livingston on Sunday.

He was asked by one supporter for an update on Giakoumakis, to which the journalist revealed that the forward is ‘quite far off it in training’. He said:

“Couple of dressing room sources saying he’s quite far off it in training, though naturally that could just be down to rustiness. Will have something up on him and the striker situation tomorrow, bar anything dramatic happening today.”

The Verdict: A concern

Giakoumakis joined Celtic at the beginning of the month, so he’s almost had three weeks with his new employers. During that time, Ange Postecoglou has lost Kyogo Furuhashi through injury, meaning Albian Ajeti has been called upon.

Giakoumakis’ fitness situation must be poor, otherwise you’d have thought that the manager would have placed him on the bench against either Real Betis or Livingston.

Hopefully Hoops fans will see him soon, but it doesn’t look too great for him following Devlin’s alarming revelation.

Journalist lifts lid on new West Ham talent

Taking to Twitter and sharing his piece from The Athletic, Roshane Thomas has lifted the lid on an exciting unseen West Ham United talent in attacker Sonny Perkins.

The Lowdown: West Ham talents emerging…

It is no secret to supporters that West Ham’s academy is currently booming with a fine generation of upcoming talents.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Following on from superstar Declan Rice, many young players have followed suit into the fringes of the first team, including Conor Coventry, Jamal Baptiste and Ademipo Odubeko to name a few.

There are plenty more just behind them, with Thomas now lifting the lid on one exciting talent who yet to make a senior competitive appearance under Moyes (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Journalist lifts lid on Perkins…

According to Thomas, the West Ham manager could have to keep a watchful eye on academy starlet Perkins, who is apparently turning more heads at the club.

As explained by the journalist on Twitter, the 17-year-old is a player who ‘supporters need to know about’ with this era being a ‘positive time’ for the Hammers’ youth setup.

Perkins has scored hat-tricks for club and country and aspires to deputise at the London Stadium for West Ham’s first team. Already, the Irons under-18s starlet looks set to better his goal tally from last season and, as per Thomas, and it shouldn’t be long before we see another talent coming through at Rush Green.

The Verdict: Exciting times…

As well as Perkins, West Ham have also looked at outside resources to bolster their academy, signing the likes of Armstrong Oko-Flex, Pierre Ekwah Elimby and Thierry Nevers in the summer transfer window.

We believe that Moyes should have one very watchful eye on his youngsters, with seemingly no shortage of them coming through in east London. If Thomas is to be taken at his word, Perkins appears to be one of the brightest young jewels of them all.
