Imran Nazir regrets premature Pakistan debut

Pakistan opening batsman Imran Nazir, who was omitted for the ICC World Twenty20 and the ongoing Asia Cup, has said his early initiation into international cricket, at the age of 17, has done more harm to his career than good.Nazir made his Pakistan debut in 1999 as a dashing opening batsman and an electric fielder, but over the years he wasn’t able to cement his position in the Test and ODI side. Nazir was regarded more as a one-day specialist, but in his 79 ODIs so far has averaged only 24.61. He played the last of his eight Tests back in 2002.”The truth is I was not ready for international cricket at that time, my technique was faulty and I didn’t have the mental strength or understanding of the game,” Nazir told . “Now that I have began to understand how international cricket needs to be played I have been dropped from the national team.”Nazir’s international career came to a standstill in 2008 when he joined the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League along with several Pakistan players. He was among the leading performers for the Lahore Badshahs but his stint lasted just one season after he and the league’s players returned to the official fold.He made a comeback to the one-day squad during the tour of Sri Lanka last year, but in five ODIs since his return , he has scored only 111 runs, with no fifty. He scored a half-century in a Twenty20 against New Zealand in Dubai, but in the two-match Twenty20 series against England in the UAE, he scored just 2 and 4 and was dropped for the World Twenty20.His aggressive approach has often cost him his wicket, and Nazir has admitted that he needs to reassess his style of play.”I am a more mature batsman now and if I get a chance to play again for Pakistan I will play in sensible fashion and cement my place in the team,” Nazir said. “I am ready to curb my natural instincts to play again for Pakistan.”But now after a lot of ups and downs in 11 years of international cricket I realise a batsman with limited range of shots cannot survive. Plus your shot selection has to be sensible, you must have the patience to wait for the bad ball to hit, not try a slog every ball as I used to do previously.”The Pakistan selectors have, traditionally, blooded several young players in their teens, including Hasan Raza, who at 14 was the world’s youngest Test cricketer. Nazir feels it’s always beneficial to give a player a decent run in domestic cricket before rushing him.”I would say a player must be given time in domestic cricket before he is blooded in international cricket. Give him time to adjust and understand the game.”

Preece reacts to Bentancur’s Spurs move

Aston Villa reporter Ashley Preece poked fun at Tottenham’s move for midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur on deadline day.

The Lowdown: Villa keen

Villa were after a new midfielder throughout January and appeared to turn their attention to the Uruguay international after having a bid rejected for Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

Steven Gerrard and co firmed up their interest in Bentancur and were hopeful of securing a move for the Uruguayan. However, after launching a £20.8m bid, it was Spurs who secured the 24-year-old’s services, announcing a move in the final hours of the transfer window.

The Latest: Preece reacts

Preece took to Twitter on Monday and replied to Spurs’ announcement on Bentancur.

He poked fun at the deal following the strong Villa Park links, saying: “Never heard of him!?” and adding a stuck-out tongue and winking emoji.

The Verdict: Not a disaster

Even though Villa were clearly big admirers of Bentancur, it may not be the end of the world that they missed out on his signature.

Villa wanted to bolster their holding midfield ranks with Marvelous Nakamba injured, but Bentancur is primarily a central midfielder. He has played as a defensive midfielder on just 48 occasions during his career compared to 156 as a central midfielder, so he wouldn’t have been a like-for-like alternative to the Zimabwean.

Therefore, waiting until the summer to pursue Bissouma could be a wiser move, when hopefully Brighton’s £45m+ asking price will drop ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, as the Mali international will be into the final 12 months of his contract at the Amex Stadium.

Myers offers update on EFC manager search

Everton are having a season of nightmares with manager troubles that have seen the search for a sixth manager in six years begin amid poor performances in the Premier League leading to the side falling to 16th in the table, just four points off the relegation zone, without a single win in their last five league games.

What’s the word?

Journalist and Everton insider, Alan Myers, has given an update on the current managerial situation at Goodison Park, when asked by a fan whether Duncan Ferguson could become the full-time manager of the side.

Myers gave an update on the progress in his Twitter replies, writing:

“My understanding is nobody has made any decisions yet on the way forward, I think the search process continues running alongside what may happen in the next two or three games.”

Sky Sports have reported several potential suitors for the job including Derby County manager, Wayne Rooney and out of work ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who are reportedly both favourites in the search for the next Everton manager.

Fans surely frustrated

Myers’ update will leave fans further frustrated as the pressure mounts on the Everton board to find the right manager to lead the club out of the despairing season they have faced so far.

Everton lost their fourth game in their last five on Saturday against Aston Villa, and fan fury boiled over as former player Lucas Digne secured an assist for the goal that led to Villa’s victory at Goodison Park.

That led to one fan throwing a bottle at the former Everton defender, and supporters took their anger further by approaching Bill Kenwright on his way out of the stadium, with videos surfacing on social media of Toffees fans demanding answers from the chairman.

Farhad Moshiri needs to work fast in finding solutions for the problems Everton currently face, with Ferguson under pressure to take something from the glimmer of hope their two games in hand has given them over Norwich City that they have gained from postponements, and at this stage every game has become a must-win for the Toffees.

Ferguson seems like a temporary solution and thus, fans will surely grow all the more frustrated the longer the wait goes on to find a new permanent head coach.

Bangladesh can cause England problems

Big Picture

Given England’s less-than-stunning one-day international record it is an oddity that they are the only nation not to have come a cropper against Bangladesh in any international fixture. They have been tested on occasions, although each time have managed to overpower their opposition. They will expect to do the same again, but may not find it the easiest of tasks against a side becoming more of a threat on home soil and showing some encouraging signs of development.Of course that has been said of Bangladesh before only for them to slip back into bad habits and they do need to support the feeling of improvement with some results. A tour of New Zealand and the seamer-friendly conditions on offer there is hardly the ideal preparation, but conditions in Dhaka won’t provide any surprises for Shakib Al Hasan’s men.In Shakib, Bangladesh have an outstanding cricketer and one of premier allrounders in the world game. He now carries a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders – as does every player in this country – but unlike the team’s previous star name, Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib appears to have the mental strength to cope with the demands. In one-day cricket Bangladesh have enough skill to upset England if the visitors don’t hit the ground running and take the contest seriously. With Andy Flower in charge complacency won’t be an issue, but this isn’t the strongest possible England team and Alastair Cook, the stand-in captain, is under pressure to ensure against any upsets. A defeat in any of the internationals will heap pressure on Andrew Strauss’s decision to skip the tour.England, though, have prepared reasonably well with, as in 2003-04, a focus on fitness along with skills. The two warm-up matches were won with ease as the batsmen, apart from Kevin Pietersen, spent useful time in the middle and the fringe bowlers were given a chance to stake their claim. They have enough to withstand the Bangladesh challenge, but it isn’t the foregone conclusion it has been in the past.

Form guide (last five completed matches)

Bangladesh LLLLL
England WLWLW

Watch out for…

Shakib Al Hasan is Bangladesh’s star man, but their top-order batting also packs quite a punch. Tamim Iqbal can be a destructive batsman on his day, as he showed when crashing India for 151 last month, and the one-day game is made for his flamboyant strokeplay. However, as with most Bangladesh batsmen, it’s about moulding attack with defence and that’s an area Tamim doesn’t always get right. Often Jamie Siddons, the coach, is left exasperated with a soft dismissal but there is immense talent oozing through that flashing blade. For England, boundary-hitting early in the innings remains a problem yet to be solved and Craig Kieswetter is set for his chance to show he’s the answer. It’s been a rapid elevation for a man who wasn’t in the squad a week ago and is now on the verge of an international debut. His form for the England Lions was strong, but it was the 143 in the first warm-up match which has made his case irresistible. However, his call-up has provided a headache over the wicketkeeping position although Matt Prior is unlikely to be dumped from the line-up just yet.

Team news

Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s leading pace bowler, may not be risked for the opening match despite coming through the warm-up game against England for the BCB XI following his latest knee injury. Spin is likely to play a key role in their plans as they aim to exploit a traditional weakness of England in one-day cricket. The top order is missing Ashraful, but Shakib and Mahmudullah have both been in productive form of late.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Zunaed Siddique, 4 Aftab Ahmed, 5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzaq, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel HossainHow quickly England’s one-day plans change. Despite a victorious series in South Africa they are set to have another new opening duo. One change is forced with Cook leading the team in place of Strauss, but Kieswetter’s form has put the cat amongst the pigeons and he will force Jonathan Trott out of the XI. With Prior probably retaining the gloves – for now, at least – the only other major question is one spinner or two.England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Craig Kieswetter, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Ryan Sidebottom

Pitch and conditions

Cook expects a “fair wicket” with scoring likely to be easier when the ball is hard. Stuart Broad has said he will use plenty of slower balls and cutters, as he did in Sri Lanka in 2007, so it could turn into a battle of attrition. Dew could be issue later in the evening and it was often a problem during the recent tri-series involving India and Sri Lanka.

Stats and Trivia

  • In eight ODIs against Bangladesh, England have not really come close to a defeat. On the 2003-04 tour they won all three matches by seven wickets. The closest they came to slipping up was in the most recent meeting, at the 2007 World Cup, when England made heavy work of chasing 144.
  • In that last meeting, Shakib hit an unbeaten 57 and Abdur Razzaq, who could play here, caused problems with his left-arm spin as he took 2 for 30 – his scalps being Strauss and Pietersen.
  • Only two of the England side have played against Bangladesh before – Pietersen and Paul Collingwood.

    Quotes

“In our conditions we play really well, we’re a developing team and growing in confidence. England need to be at their best to beat us and they’ve left a couple of key players behind so I’m thinking that could be the difference, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
“There’s a bit more pressure riding on it but I’m really looking forward to that pressure. It’s a hugely proud moment for me.”

  • West Ham fans erupt at Lingard update

Flocking to Twitter, these West Ham United fans have erupted over a fresh transfer update from ExWHUemployee involving Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard.

The England international, who enjoyed a fine stint on loan at the London Stadium over the second half of 2020/2021, has been on West Ham’s radar since the summer as they eye a permanent move. (The Telegraph)

    [web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite manager David Moyes’ best efforts, Lingard elected to stay in Manchester and fight for a place under ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – a decision which has resulted in him playing just 88 Premier League minutes (WhoScored).

Now, reports suggest he is open to leaving in the January transfer window as his new contract talks stall with West Ham in the fray to sign him (ESPN).

His current deal expires in 2022, meaning he could leave at the end of this season for free unless United sell next month.

Sharing news on West Ham’s involvement, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has updated supporters, saying Lingard is in fact still a top target for the club with an early January move expected (West Ham Way). However, they will face competition for the 29-year-old with Newcastle United also keen.

    West Ham fans erupt…

Flocking to Twitter, it’s little wonder some West Ham fans are ecstatic given he is a proven player under Moyes – having scored nine goals whilst assisting four others in 16 Premier League starts for him last season (WhoScored).

Lauded as the best English top-flight player on current form at one stage during his loan, Lingard’s signing could be a real injection of quality as West Ham aim to keep chase in the Champions League qualification quest.

Taking this into account, it’s little wonder some Irons fans called this the ‘best news’ of the week – find out more here.

Liverpool fans flock to James Pearce claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have been left worried following an update on their January transfer plans courtesy of reliable reporter James Pearce.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been imperious in all competitions so far this season, becoming the first-ever English side to win all six games in a Champions League group stage last night with a 2-1 win over AC Milan (Indian Express).

The high-flying Reds are also well in contention for the Premier League title as we approach the festive period, keeping pace with table-toppers Manchester City as they lay just one point and one place behind the champions.

However, given that key players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will be leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, there have been concerns that Liverpool could lose pace as they are urged to make January signings (talkSPORT).

Making a claim on the Reds’ winter window plans, The Athletic reporter Pearce shared what he believes in a Tuesday night Q&A.

Replying to a supporter who asked if he thinks Liverpool will sign anyone next month, the journalist explained: “As things stand I’d be surprised if LFC sign anyone in January. Personally, I’d love to see another attacking option added to the squad.”

    Liverpool fans worried…

Flocking to this claim from a reliable source, it’s little wonder so many Reds supporters are concerned given the absence of both Salah and Mane mid-season – the pair have scored 29 goals between them already this term.

Without January additions, this leaves Klopp arguably short of options going forward, with more responsibility placed on alternatives like Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino. Given the strength in depth of title rivals Man City and Chelsea, there is indeed a cause for concern to be held.

Here’s how some Liverpool supporters responded to Pearce’s claim, with many left disenchanted at the prospect of yet another sparse transfer window from the club.

Mohammad Asif raring for Test comeback

Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan fast bowler, who is hoping to play his first Test in more than two years later this month has vowed to make up for lost time due to several drug-related controversies. Asif, 26, has been named in Pakistan’s squad for the three-Test series against New Zealand, which starts November 24.”I have not played in New Zealand but have heard a lot about the pitches and conditions there and hopefully if I can get a chance I will make an impact,” Asif said. “The key is to focus on just cricket and try to make up for lost time.”He has already made his limited-overs comeback during the ICC Champions Trophy after a year-long suspension for testing positive for the banned substance nandrolone. He showed off his ability in his first game on return by grabbing two wickets as Pakistan nearly scripted a sensational turnaround against Australia.Originally named in the one-day side and Twenty20s to take on New Zealand in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, he was left out since he is banned from entering the UAE after being stopped with a small quantity of opium at Dubai airport last year (criminal charges were not pressed).Asif is tuning up for his Test return by playing Pakistan’s domestic first-class tournament, the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, where he has taken 23 wickets in five matches. “The good thing is that I have been playing regularly in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches,” he said. “That has helped me find my rhythm and form and get my confidence back. There is nothing better for a bowler then to bowl in the longer version of the game.”

Newcastle: Howe must land Dean Henderson

An update has emerged on Manchester United gem Dean Henderson, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

    What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, the England international has been mentioned as a possible goalkeeper target for the Magpies.

The report claims that a loan deal for Henderson would be costly for Newcastle, with Lazio shot-stopper Thomas Strakosha among their alternative options.

    Krul 2.0

Eddie Howe, who is reportedly close to taking over on Tyneside, could unearth Tim Krul 2.0 for Newcastle by signing Henderson in the January window.

    [snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Krul played 185 times for the Magpies after coming through the ranks as a young goalkeeper and kept 53 clean sheets for the club. He established himself as a regular in the Premier League and Henderson could be the newest long-term number one at St. James’ Park.

The 24-year-old has 49 Premier League appearances under his belt to date for Manchester United and Sheffield United and has kept 18 clean sheets in that time. He has played 27 times for the Red Devils in all competitions and kept an impressive 13 clean sheets.

Former United boss Jose Mourinho once hailed the shot-stopper and praised his arrogance. He told talkSPORT:

“I am a Henderson fan. When I was at United he was a kid, and I tell this story because it shows his nature.

“He came to my office asking for a loan, he went to Shrewsbury, but this kid said to me then, ‘When I come back, I want to be number one’. We looked at each other because we had De Gea and this kid never played one game, but he has had incredible development.

“The loans were all very successful. The way United organised them I think United did amazing for him and he did amazing for himself. He has this arrogance in him, this trust and belief which I think an England goalkeeper needs.”

This, along with his statistics in the top-flight to date, highlights the potential the £120k-per-week gem has heading into the rest of his career. 24 is incredibly young for a goalkeeper and Howe could bring in the club’s number one for years to come if he signs him, as he has shown that he has the quality to keep clean sheets in the Premier League.

Therefore, he has the potential to be a top-tier goalkeeper for a number of years and could be the next Tim Krul at St. James’ Park as he could come in and solidify his place in the starting XI if he is able to fulfil his potential and remain consistent.

Maddinson ton in vain as Sri Lanka triumph

Nic Maddinson’s maiden century was overshadowed by a rollicking partnership between centurion Banuka Rajapaksha and Rumesh Buddika

Banuka Rajapaksha smashed eight sixes and 14 fours in his knock•Getty ImagesNic Maddinson’s maiden century was overshadowed by a rollicking partnership between centurion Banuka Rajapaksha and Rumesh Buddika as Sri Lanka Under-19 lapped their way to a seven-wicket win over Australia Under-19. Maddinson’s unbeaten run-a-ball 133 stood out in an otherwise shoddy performance by the Australians, who failed to support him adequately when setting a target. Strikes all throughout the batting order were the difference and the victory has levelled the series at one apiece.Australia, who chose to bat, compiled a score of 8 for 252 in their allotted 50 overs, a target Sri Lanka reached with 73 balls to spare. Maddinson, after contributing 46 to the win on Friday, remained unbeaten on 133 from 133 balls, his first hundred in any form of the game. The 42-run opening stand between Maddinson and Ben Dougall (24 from 22) was the only period when Australia managed much control. Once Kasun Madushanka removed Dougall in the eighth over, Australia quickly slumped to 3 for 60 and continued to lose wickets. They sunk further when Alex Keath and Tom Beaton, the captain, were run out off consecutive deliveries in the 32nd over. Waddinson kept losing partners yet managed to stick around and get the score just past 250.It didn’t matter much as fluent innings from Rajapaksha and Buddika – on debut – saw the visitors home easily. Two early wickets gave Australia some lift, but they were soon brought crashing down as the batting duo waded into the attack. Rajapaksha was especially severe on the bowlers, striking 14 fours and eight sixes in an unbeaten 111-ball 157. Buddika’s 57 from 71 balls complimented his partner’s rambunctious maiden century. Apart from Luke Doran, whose eights overs cost just 33 and accounted for Buddika, every bowler went for more than six and a half an over. The pair added a match-winning 168 that decisively sealed the match.
