Tottenham vs Everton preview: team news, form, how to watch

Tottenham Hotspur play host to Everton in North London on Monday in a crucial fixture for both sides as they chase the final few European qualification spots.

Spurs suffered a crushing 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United on Thursday and will be keen to return to winning ways, with Jose Mourinho’s side now ninth in the table, 10 points adrift of the top four.

Everton have been much improved since the restart and continued their good form on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Everton are now up to 11th in the table and could move ahead of their opponents with a win.

Form

Spurs have won just once in their last six Premier League matches, picking up just five points from a possible 18.

At home, things have been slightly better, with Mourinho’s team winning three of their last five and being unbeaten since the resumption of football last month.

Everton on the other hand are unbeaten since the return of the Premier League, picking up seven points from a possible nine, despite facing Liverpool and Leicester.

Away from Goodison Park they have struggled, winning just two from their last six, although they did win their last away day against Norwich City, with Michael Keane sealing a 1-0 victory at Carrow Road.

Team news

Juan Foyth and Japhet Tanganga are both being assessed following injuries but are set to miss out, while Troy Parrott could be available after returning to training last month.

After starting on the bench against Sheffield United Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Winks and Erik Lamela could all be in line for recalls.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Fabian Delph are both long-term absentees who will not return this season, while there are doubts over Djibril Sidibe and Theo Walcott.

Richarlison is also a doubt with an ankle injury and will be assessed ahead of the match.

How to watch

Tottenham vs Everton kicks off at 20:00 UTC at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London and will be broadcast live Sky Sports, while fans can also live stream football online.

Jamie O’Hara’s £5m Wolves career nosedived

When Wolves handed £5m to Tottenham for the services of Jamie O’Hara on a permanent basis, one presumes that nobody associated with the Midlands-based club saw it as a bad deal.

The midfielder had just enjoyed a stint on loan at Molineux, where he scored three goals in 13 appearances including one crucial strike against Blackburn on the final day of the season, which helped keep Wolves in the Premier League.

O’Hara had also netted the club’s Goal of the Season against Midlands rivals West Brom, a strike that even Mick McCarthy said had helped the Dartford-born man build up a rapport with the supporters.

So, what went wrong?

Well, by O’Hara’s own admission, he let the celebrity lifestyle go to his head.

He admits that he should’ve just focused on his football – there was also a time where he became embroiled in an argument with supporters – and as time went on, things became more and more sour at Molineux for the ex-Tottenham man.

O’Hara eventually dropped into the Championship with Wolves, refusing to play under Terry Connor and instead undergoing surgery when the club needed him – as The Birmingham Mail reported.

His contract was eventually cancelled by the club, but how much did Wolves pay for what the midfielder actually did on the pitch?

Well, across his 57 appearances for Wolves, O’Hara only scored six goals and registered eight assists.

Take his £5m transfer fee into account, and you’d discover – with a bit of quick maths – that the 33-year-old cost £625k per assist, which is a fair bit in all honesty.

The 2011 signing quickly went from hero to zero at Molineux, to say the least.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

What should’ve been a romantic stint in the Midlands after a heroic loan spell eventually turned into a soap opera, and one presumes that O’Hara has a lot of regrets about his time at Molineux.

In other news, McCarthy and Jez Moxey struck gold with this 2009 signing worth £191.2k per goal…

Ex-Leeds man tips up a move to Elland Road for Daniel Ayala

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Transfer season is well and truly underway as the first murmurings of January rumours are emerging across the board.

Of course, Leeds United aren’t exempt from the rumours and the gossip that surrounds the leadup to the January transfer window, and there’s one move that seems to be picking up some traction.

Indeed, recent reports have linked Daniel Ayala with a move to Elland Road, and now David Prutton has chimed in to have his say on the potential transfer.

What’s been said then?

The former Whites midfielder spoke to Football League World about the Yorkshire outfit’s potential move for Ayala.

“Ben White has done tremendously well, Liam Cooper has had his injury concerns, but I think Coops has been a great servant to Leeds.

“This isn’t me trying to get anyone out of the side, but I think competition from a player such as that (Ayala) would be extremely healthy.”

“Given how he understands the top end of the division and how to get out of it, I think that would be something that the management (at Leeds) would look at.

“It doesn’t strike me as something that would be beyond the realms of possibility.”

Exactly right

Prutton is spot on with this summary.

The Spaniard is the calibre of player that Leeds should be looking at, and if they’re looking to get promoted based on the strength of their backline then Ayala may be the perfect addition.

Yes, Middlesbrough aren’t doing too well these days, but under Aitor Karanka they were promoted while conceding just 31 goals, and Ayala played over 3000 minutes for Boro that season.

Not only that but he’d provide some more depth in a position that Leeds could struggle in.

Prutton alluded to the fact that Cooper has had his injury concerns, but when his replacement is the most red-carded player in the club’s history that is another recipe for disaster, especially when there are only three senior centre-backs in the squad.

Real Madrid could land Ramos’ replacement with Skriniar

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Even though they have been getting better as of late, Real Madrid are still striving to improve their defensive record in the 2019/20 campaign.

And with many of their key players slowly but surely getting on, one man could solve both problems all by himself.

On the chalkboard

Recently, Real Madrid have been linked with Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, as per reports coming from Don Balon.

And looking at the 24-year-old’s qualities and Los Blancos’ needs, it does seem like a match made in heaven.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

So far, Real have conceded 13 goals in ten games across all competitions, and while that record is not necessarily disastrous, their first clean sheet of the season came after five games had been played.

Besides, with Sergio Ramos already 33-years-old, their backline could definitely do with some new blood.

A future leader

Looking at Skriniar’s stats, it’s easy to see why Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a close eye on him.

The 24-year-old has averaged 0.9 tackles per game in Serie A and three in the Champions League so far in the season. On top of that, he managed 0.3 and 0.5 interceptions per game in each of the competitions respectively, combining that with a rather impressive 3.7 clearances in Serie A and two in Europe as well.

Of course, Ramos still edges him out ever so slightly in some of these categories but Skriniar is only starting to develop properly.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Maybe he’s not on Ramos’ level just yet but if Real Madrid are seriously considering approaching him, they surely won’t regret it.

At only 24 years of age, Skriniar is nowhere his best and yet, he’s already showing clear signs of brilliance.

Besides, it would get two birds with just one stone – Real Madrid would go a long way to fixing their defensive issues and would also get a good Ramos successor as well. Real, of course, have already signed Eder Militao but one feels that Skriniar is ahead of the Brazilian in his development and could actually be an excellent partner for the summer signing.

It’s a chance they shouldn’t miss.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp should use Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

However scrappy and difficult it may have been, Liverpool got the job done against Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon. Bramall Lane proved to be a tough ground for the Reds to play their normal game, and so scraping a win by any way, shape or form is always a great sign.

But the 1-0 score-line and overall performance does raise some questions about Jurgen Klopp’s team selection and tactical set-up. The Blades were set up to sit back and soak up the pressure before hitting the visitors on the counter, and it was no surprise to see Liverpool struggle to break them down – the side had just four shots on target as per Sofascore. One man who could perhaps solve that kind of headache in future games is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

On the chalkboard

The 26-year-old has made his return from a serious injury, and has provided Klopp with another option off the bench. But the unique set of skills he possesses means he may be ideally suited to starting games against teams who want to adopt a similarly defensive approach to the one employed by Chris Wilder’s men on Saturday.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The England international has naturally been a winger, having played there for the majority of his career – in his 299 games as listed by Transfermarkt, 171 of them have come on either the left or right flanks. But, in the 42 games he has played in central midfield, the former Arsenal man has produced a fine return of six goals and nine assists.

His pace and athleticism means that if he is used in more central areas, he can commit opposition midfielders by taking them on – in the time he has been on the pitch this season in the Premier League, Oxlade-Chamberlain has averaged one shot and 1.4 dribbles per game.

Speaking earlier this year after the Reds’ 0-0 draw with Everton, Graeme Souness questioned Klopp’s insistence on playing Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho (the exact same trio who featured at the weekend).

“They have a fabulous midfield and if you are playing in Liverpool’s back four that is the midfield you want, but if you are playing up front then maybe it’s not the midfield you want. They don’t create too much and they don’t slip clever and cute passes in and I think that’s where they are coming unstuck.”

Having Oxlade-Chamberlain in there however changes all that. The Merseyside club would have someone who can carry the ball from deep in midfield and increase the pace of the game with some powerful running. When the Reds next come up against a side likely to drop deep back and defend the edge of their own box, Klopp may well be better off throwing the 26-year-old in from the start.

Manchester United cannot allow Fred to leave for Fiorentina this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to La Nazione (via Calcio Mercato), Fiorentina are lining up a summer swoop for Manchester United midfielder Fred.

What’s the word?

The Brazil international has yet to feature under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, and has struggled to establish himself in the Red Devils’ first-team since his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer.

Now, the report claims Fiorentina are contemplating make a move for the 26-year-old and the Italian side value the midfielder at €30m (£27.2m).

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It adds that whilst the Viola have made an enquiry about his securing his services, it is still yet unclear whether United would be willing to let him go following the departure of Ander Herrera earlier in the summer transfer window.

Lack of depth

Surely United can’t afford to lose another player without having the opportunity to replace them? Even with Fred only being on the fringes of the squad at the moment, he still represents a proven option from his time in Ukraine. The Red Devils signed no midfielders in the summer window but have seen the likes of Herrera and Marouane Fellaini leave this calendar year.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

To kick the season off, Solskjaer has had to make do with a midfield two of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, and the options to replace the duo in case of injury or loss of form are incredibly limited, with Nemanja Matic the only other senior option in the middle of the park.

United could really struggle if injuries begin to take their toll over the course of the season, and so really need every one of their current squad to do their bit. Letting Fred leave would be tantamount to a massive oversight on the Red Devils’ part.
