West Ham bombshell involving Luis Diaz

Speaking to the press, West Ham United manager David Moyes has shared some very interesting transfer news involving Liverpool forward Luis Diaz.

The Lowdown: West Ham fail in summer bids…

According to reliable sources, the Hammers failed in multiple bids to sign attacking talents in last-minute January moves.

Along with Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, West Ham tried to sign Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata last month, with Moyes also refusing to give up on playmaker Jesse Lingard (Sky Sports).

It appears that the Irons, by admission of their manager, weren’t exactly done there, as Moyes lifts the lid on another last-gasp attempt to sign a forward in January.

The Latest: Moyes makes Diaz admission…

According to West Ham’s manager, the east Londoners were actually ‘very far’ down the line in their bid to sign the Colombian star before Liverpool swooped in.

Moyes said on Friday (via Daily Mail): “We were quite far down the line to sign him from Porto. My understanding is Liverpool were going to come in for him in the summer, and I was going to try to get him in January.

“I don’t know if us trying to get him in January affected Liverpool’s decision but he’s a really good player.“I really hoped that he was going to choose West Ham. We didn’t get him in but our ambition to sign the best players to improve West Ham is good. I want to make us better and I don’t want it to be mediocre if I can help it.”

The Verdict: Very interesting…

Reports at the time detailed that Liverpool hijacked Tottenham’s deal to sign the player, but as this news emerges, it appears that they also ruined West Ham’s hopes of signing the 25-year-old.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, Diaz would have been a brilliant signing for the Hammers, especially for the initial £37m that Liverpool ended up spending.

Before his Premier League move, he had notched 14 goals and five assists over 18 Portuguese top-flight appearances for FC Porto this season.

Indeed, Diaz may well have been a truly brilliant capture for the Irons.

Celtic must revive Kristijan Lovric chase

Celtic may well go on to win the Premiership crown this summer, a deserved title for Ange Postecoglou in his first year with the Hoops.

However, he might have some tricky dilemmas to work out as he heads towards a summer transfer window where a lot of work will need to be done behind the scenes at Parkhead.

What’s the word?

Celtic are in danger of losing a few players in the upcoming market with Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers both set to see their loan deal expire.

Talks have begun to keep the latter in Glasgow but the future of Jota, their diminutive and skilful Portuguese sensation, is a lot more unclear.

It’s thought Celtic have a £6.5m option to buy the winger but Postecoglou has been rather coy on whether they’ll look to activate that clause.

Should they opt against it, the Bhoys must revive their chase of Kristijan Lovric.

He’s like Mbappe

Celtic have been interested in the Croat now for a number of years with a bid of £4.5m even believed to have been rejected for his services.

Yet, if they still have the NK Osijek man in their services, they must line up another bid even if he has only just moved in the winter market.

A move to British shores would surely be tempting for the player and if Postecoglou’s recruitment team can stump up the cash, his current side would find it difficult to turn it down given their financial status.

Jota will be an incredibly hard player to replace given his 20 goal contributions this term but in Lovric, they’d have someone who is more than capable.

The 26-year-old found the back of the net on 54 occasions for Gorica and has grown an enviable reputation for being one of the most dangerous players in the Croatian top tier.

Indeed, speaking about Lovric previously, HNTV commentator Damir Petravic said: “He dribbles and scores in the style of Robben, shoots free throws like Pirlo or Pjanic, and knows how to sprint like Mbappe.”

That sounds like an incredibly dangerous attacker, one who judging by his 28 assists, is also capable of creating regular scoring opportunities for his teammates.

Jota has been sublime at points this term but has still had the tendency to run a little hot and cold. In Lovric, however, they may well find a player capable of being more consistent.

It would be a significant deal to complete and a tricky one given his circumstances but it’s evident he’s someone Celtic have admired for some time. This summer could be the perfect chance to head back into the market for him.

Leeds battling Man Utd for Boubacar Kamara

Leeds United are one of the teams interested in Boubacar Kamara…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Sky Sports, who have named the Yorkshire giants alongside Premier League rivals Manchester United in the race to sign the Marseille midfielder before the January transfer window deadline on Monday.

The 22-year-old gem is out of contract in the summer, so the coming days are the last chance for the Ligue 1 outfit to earn some sort of fee for him and the Daily Mail believe they will sell for just £10m.

Battle for late bargain

Kamara’s versatility to play in the backline or in midfield makes him a very intriguing prospect and one that could be of huge benefit to Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds.

The 66-year-old head coach has seen his squad decimated with injuries throughout the 2021/22 campaign, particularly in the engine room, where he is currently without star man Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds have not signed someone in the role since January 2018, four years ago, when Adam Forshaw swapped Middlesbrough for Elland Road. Even he has recently picked up an injury, leaving Bielsa even lighter on options.

Kamara is one of Europe’s brightest talents right now, having been dubbed a “phenomenon” by former Olympiens teammate Rolando. “When he started training with us, he was 15 years old. And from day one, I said, no, but this little one is going to be a great player,” he added.

Since making his debut, the young versatile machine has averaged 2.8 long balls, 2.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game, putting up some remarkable numbers, via WhoScored.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Whites could well seal an absolute bargain in Kamara in the coming few days, especially at just £10m, which is well within Leeds’ budget.

Bielsa badly needs midfield reinforcements and the fact that the France U21 international can also play in defence makes him a very useful candidate indeed.

If they can seal a late move for him before Monday, then Bielsa would surely be a very happy man.

Rangers fans react to Patterson sale info

Official Rangers media partner Heart & Hand have revealed some the details involved in the proposed sale of Nathan Patterson to Everton.

It emerged on Sunday evening that the English Premier League club were closing in on a deal for the Gers’ right back.

Everton had made two unsuccessful attempts to land Patterson in the 2021 summer transfer window, but Rangers’ insistence on a sell-on clause had apparently been a ‘stumbling block’ in negotiations.

However, according to a new claim from Heart & Hand, the Toffees have now agreed to that provision.

The Merseyside club will pay £12m for the Scotland international, most of it up front, and the fee could rise to £16m if add-ons are triggered.

Patterson has only made two starts in the Premiership this season, but his sale could become the most lucrative in Rangers’ history, surpassing the £12.15m they fetched from current Ibrox manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s move to Arsenal in 2001.

Here’s what these Rangers fans made of the information from Heart & Hand regarding the 20-year-old’s proposed exit.

These Rangers fans applaud Patterson business

“Will be sad to see Paterson go, but this is money that can kickstart Gio’s era and our player trading model without upset the first 11. Paterson will also be set for life, no brainer for all parties.”

“good deal for both parties, would have liked to see him develop here but too much to knock back for a substitute”

“As most are saying, great business for a player who has only started a handful of games. Perhaps he could have played a bigger part in years to come, but wasn’t fair on him being stuck on the bench. Hope some money gets put back into the team, right wing and centre half please.”

“Good move for everyone. Great money for us for a benchwarmer, and he’ll find it far easier to get a game at Everton instead of trying to dislodge Tav. The very best of luck to him. Once a Ranger etc”

“Some bit of business for us btw”

Jamie Siddons fined over anger at umpiring

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has been fine 10 percent of his match fee after his angry response to the umpiring during the third day of the second Test against England at Dhaka

Cricinfo staff23-Mar-2010Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has been fine 10 percent of his match fee after his angry response to the umpiring during the third day of the second Test against England at Dhaka. On a day where a number of decisions went against Bangladesh, Siddons’ frustrations became apparent after Ian Bell had been given not out to an lbw appeal. He marched to the front of the dressing room and signalled onto the field that he thought it was out. He also went and spoke to the match referee, Jeff Crowe, but it’s the public show of his emotions that has caused the problem.”There were probably three or four decisions I was unhappy with,” Siddons told the BBC after the third day. “Hindsight makes it easy for me to be critical but that’s the game. Umpires do make mistakes, but it made it hard for us today but we’re still in the game, it’s still pretty even.”He has been charged with a Level 1 one offence of “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match” and immediately pleaded guilty during a hearing with Crowe on Tuesday.”Jamie became increasingly frustrated and let his emotions out during the second session of day three which was obvious for all to see,” said Crowe. “Clearly he behaved inappropriately and he agrees that such actions and gestures must be kept behind closed doors. He is disappointed with himself that he was so public and he did not hesitate in pleading guilty and accepting the proposed sanction.”The Umpire Decision Review System hasn’t been in place for the series due to the cost of implementing the system and Shakib Al Hasan felt the match would have gone differently if the reviews had been available.”We would have been in a very good position if [UDRS] was in use here,” he said. “I think we would have asked for a referral four times with full confidence, and three of them would have come to our way for sure. It’s really bad for us that we did not use the referral system, which we could have done.”

Greg Chappell backs U-19 side to make semis

Greg Chappell, the chairman of Cricket Australia’s youth selectors, is confident that the Australian team will reach the semi-finals of the U-19 World Cup. Chappell believes that the tournament should be seen as a means to develop cricketers for the senior team in the future, rather than as a destination.”We perhaps could have picked some more experienced players that might have given us a better chance to win the World Cup, but not necessarily to develop Australian players for the future. It’s a balancing act, but always the view has got to be of the bigger picture,” Chappell told AAP.”History tells you, if you make junior cricket a destination then it won’t produce many senior players.”Australia have won the event twice, including in 2002 when it was held in New Zealand, and have qualified for the semi-finals in every edition barring 2008. Chappell gave insights into the kind of talent Australia looked to blood in a tournament where teams from India and Pakistan have traditionally done well.”The important thing from a youth selection point of view is that we are picking players who have the potential to go further. They’re on the rise rather than at their peak.”It’s important for us to be competitive and our objective should always be to get to the semi-finals, but if we made [winning the tournament] a priority it would slow down our success.”In terms of making the transition from Under-19 to the senior level, Australia’s cricketers have done very well. Most notably, all but one member from the 2000 Under-19 squad went on to play first-class cricket, while six of them have played international cricket.Four of those – Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson, Shane Watson and Nathan Hauritz – are now regulars in the Test side. Shaun Marsh has represented Australia in ODIs while Andrew McDonald earned a baggy green last year.Chappell believes that the success of the 2010 side should not be evaluated at the end of the tournament, and will depend on how the players develop in four to five years time. “This is part of the journey, it’s not a destination.”
