Man Utd fans hail Marcos Rojo after impressive UEL display against Partizan

After looking like he was heading for the Old Trafford exit door earlier in the summer, Marcos Rojo appears to have turned his Manchester United career well and truly around.

The Argentina international is featuring more prominently in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for the first-team, and has already made eight appearances across all competitions this season.

Against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night in the Europa League, the 29-year-old was at his rugged best, making two interceptions, two clearances and one block as per Sofascore.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer hailed his defender for his “excellent” performance, and insisted the display proved exactly why the Red Devils kept him.

After seeing his display, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the forming Sporting CP ace.

Many Red Devils supporters praised his fine performance, and insisted he has really begun to produce consistently good performances for the side.

Manchester City: Fans heap praise on Phil Foden after immediate Champions League impact

Phil Foden made an instant impact from the bench in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb with a goal in the 95th minute on Tuesday night. Indeed, the Stockport-born creative midfielder has been talked up by his club manager since carrying England’s under-17s to World Cup glory and, judging from the reaction below, a lot of City fans are right behind him.

Still, it’s been a frustrating season for Foden so far, who has had to bide his time at the Etihad Stadium amid the glittering array of talent on offer. In fact, he’s played just 10 Premier League minutes all season, as per WhoScored.

Furthermore, pundits such as talkSPORT’s Tony Cottee have claimed he needs to be sent out on loan, but it seems the 19-year-old has complete faith in Pep Guardiola to bring him into one of the strongest, if not the strongest, team in Europe as he remains on the sidelines.

If he does breakthrough, he’ll be the first player from City’s new £250m academy to fully establish himself in the starting 11 and, for a lot of City fans, the fact he’s from Greater Manchester should make it all that much sweeter.

After the performance, Foden posted a photo of himself hugging Raheem Sterling with the caption ‘Things you love to see’, and City fans showed just how much they’re backing the youngster.

Real Madrid can’t rush into Xabi Alonso decision

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Real Madrid are not exactly enjoying the best of times.

They were thumped 3-0 by PSG in the Champions League earlier this week and that result came off the back of an underwhelming start to life in La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane’s first four La Liga matches left a lot to be desired, as Real registered two wins and two draws.

And precisely for those reasons, the latest reports coming out of Mundo Deportivo about a potential heir to the Frenchman’s throne don’t really come as a surprise.

The Catalan outlet state that Florentino Perez, Los Blancos’ president, is considering Xabi Alonso as a candidate to take over if Zidane is dispensed with.

Of course, there are arguments for both sides of the discussion – Alonso, for all his pedigree and reputation as a player, is still fairly inexperienced as a coach. He spent some time with Real Madrid’s youth crop back in the 2018/19 season, and now, he’s the current manager of Real Sociedad B, a team he’s led in a total of four matches so far.

By all means, that’s not a sublime resume.

The other side of the coin is the shiny one, though: he’s ambitious, he’s got the character, good history as a player, especially while donning the white kit of the Galacticos – he won La Liga and the Champions League – and most importantly, Perez likes him a lot, as Mundo Deportivo reveal. These are all things that a viable Real Madrid coach needs to have.

But “don Perez” also has to be patient with him.

If it’s really Alonso he wants, it needs to happen at the right time – not too soon and not too late. At the moment, we’re still in the “too soon” area.

Real need an experienced coach to guide them through choppy waters and Alonso is not there just yet, even if he is slowly approaching the point where he can be considered as a viable option for a club like Los Blancos.

Right now, Perez simply can’t afford another failed project; giving Alonso the reins would simply be too much too soon, and will only reduce the chances of him being at the helm when it is the right time, when the right squad is in place and he’s accumulated the right level of experience.

Perhaps, though, it can happen at some point in the future.

Huddersfield Town appointment lauded by Sam Allardyce

[ad_pod ]Sam Allardyce has spoken.Since their relegation from the Premier League, things haven’t improved much for Huddersfield Town. And when we say that, what we mean is their return to the second-tier has been utterly miserable.Sat in joint-last place in the Championship and already one manager down for the season, having sacked former boss Jan Siewert, who was admittedly a bizarre appointment in the first place, the Terriers needed a hero (or two).Watch Huddersfield Town Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Fortunately, that’s just what they’ve been given in the form of dynamic duo Danny Cowley and his brother, Nicky.

The former Lincoln Town men will inherit Siewert’s faltering squad and attempt to guide them towards their first victory of the season when they meet Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

The Owls have only recently appointed a new boss themselves, ex-Birmingham man Garry Monk, so this could be a tasty affair.

Speaking to talkSPORT, rescue mission specialist Allardyce reacted to the John Smith Stadium new boys…

Positive sounding stuff from Big Sam.

Wolves’ Adama Traore posts defiant message on Instagram after poor start

It’s good to see that the Spaniard isn’t willing to doubt the Wolves cause, especially after they finished an impressive seventh last season.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what is letting Wolves down this time around – although the added burden of Europa League football is surely a factor – but their best course of action is to continue doing what made them so successful last term.

Luckily it seems as if the players still fully believe in the way they’re trying to play and the club’s ethos, despite the poor results.

Manchester United already have a Herrera replacement

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has held conversations with Fred to reassure him that the midfielder remains a part of his first-team plans for next season.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that the Brazil international could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, despite only joining from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk last year.

However, The Sun claim that Solskjaer has “big aspirations” for the 26-year-old and that he wants to help him adjust to the pace and intensity of English football.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

The report adds that United have already turned down many loan enquiries for the midfielder from clubs across Europe, and that there is hope that Fred can still enjoy a fine career at Old Trafford.

Time to shine

Arriving in a £52m deal, much was expected of Fred in his first season at United, following claims that the Red Devils had beaten off competition from local rivals Manchester City to his signature.

However, the Brazilian – valued at £27m by Transfermarkt – endured a rather difficult campaign and struggled to nail down a place in the first-team; indeed, over the course of the season, Fred made just 25 appearances for the club in total and only 17 of those came in the Premier League.

What the midfielder perhaps needs to truly ensure he has the chance to shine, is clarity over the role he will be playing. The 26-year-old alternated between a holding role (five games) and a more orthodox central midfield position (16 games) last term, and his lack of positional awareness was exposed by the rip-roaring speed of the Premier League.

At Shakhtar though, he was tasked with helping to win the ball back from the holding role in a 4-2-3-1, before initiating moves with his incisive passing into the more advanced midfield players. Indeed, in the Ukrainian outfit’s Champions League run in the 2017/2018 season, Fred averaged 2.9 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 56.8 passes per game.

It was the kind of all-around midfield action United bought him for; instead, the lack of a clearly defined role at Old Trafford saw his numbers in all categories take a massive dip with just 1.7 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 45.2 passes per game in the league.

Despite the significant loss of Ander Herrera, Fred may be the one to truly benefit from the Spaniard leaving as he looks to make that role of being the side’s industrious midfielder his own. It will simply be up to Solskjaer himself to truly recognise what position Fred best suits.

Luton Town: Bournemouth confirm Jack Stacey signing

After losing James Justin, Luton Town have been raided for another defender in the form of Jack Stacey.

Bournemouth have confirmed via their official website the signing of right-back Jack Stacey, with BBC Sport reporting that the Hatters accepted a £4m offer for the defender following a season where the 23-year-old was influential to the club’s promotion to the Championship.

As well as scoring via Luton Today as well as being named in the EFL Team of the Season, alongside full-back partner Justin as well as striker James Collins.

With Sky Sports News reporting that Luton could receive up to £8m for Justin plus the reported £4m the club have accepted for Stacey, the Hatters now find themselves in a healthy financial position to not only reinvest into the future of the club but also to find good replacements for two of last season’s most important players.

With Luton initially signing Stacey on a free transfer according to Transfermarkt and Justin coming through the academy, the Bedfordshire-based club have made profit from two players who cost them nothing to sign, meaning that the Hatters could seemingly afford to go fairly big on signing replacements.

Luton fans, who should the club sign to replace Justin and Stacey? Let us know!
