Mumbai continued to dictate terms for the second straight day at the Brabourne Stadium, with Amol Muzumdar and Rohit Sharma’s handsome knocks taking the game further away from Punjab. Muzumdar scored his first hundred of the season, and his 132-run fourth-wicket stand with Rohit was the main highlight of a day on which Punjab failed to make any impression. At stumps, Punjab’s opening pair of Sunny Sohal and Karan Goel played with caution the four overs of spin from Ramesh Powar and Ankit Chavan, who are bound to play a bigger role on Saturday as Mumbai try to seal the match.Ajinkya Rahane, who had cracked a stroke-filled half-century the previous evening, once again started off on a brisk note, punishing the loose balls from Gagandeep Singh and Amanpreet Singh. However, half an hour into the morning, Rahane was adjudged leg-before after he tried to push an offcutter from Gagandeep for a single into the vacant midwicket region. It was a big wicket because Rahane, the tournament highest run-getter this year, was key to Mumbai’s chances to score an innings victory. In walked Muzumdar with the weight of expectations on his slim shoulders: his unconvincing form (two fifties in six previous games) had added to the pressure on the top order. But, today, Muzumdar seemed to have exorcised his ghosts finally. He took charge straightaway with two magnificent drives past cover, both fours, against the well-flighted legbreaks of Sarabjit Ladda. Nimble on the feet, Muzumdar was quick to move forward as well as draw back if the bowler tried to attack him.Making use of the width on offer and the gaps in the field, especially behind the wicket, Muzumdar utilised the cut and the paddle- sweep frequently as he marched to his third half-century of the season before lunch. He was joined by Rohit once Vinayak Samant, the other overnight batsman, departed soon after reaching his fifty. In a moment of misjudgment, Samant stayed back to a delivery from left-arm spinner Ankur Kakkar; the ball jumped off the pitch and turned away to bowl him.Rohit started on an extravagant note with two full-blooded fours: the first over Kakkar’s head, followed by one clubbed over mid-off. When Ladda offered him width, Rohit accepted with glee, slashing the legspinner past point for another four.By lunch, Mumbai were set to post an imposing lead having gone past Punjab’s score. With the pitch completely dry, the ball gripped the surface and provided the comfort of an extra moment for the batsman to decide his shot. The only way Punjab could have expected to strike back was by tossing the ball up or pinning the batsmen down – something neither of their three spinners – Ladda, Varun Khanna and Kakkar – managed consistently. It only helped Mumbai dominate.Rohit brought up his half-century in a swift manner, charging Gagandeep for an easy on-drive for four. Two balls later, a solid front-foot punch raced away to the sightscreen behind the bowler. Playing with gusto, he stood his ground once again to punch it past the straight boundary to end the over. Rohit looked ominous as he neared his second century of the season, but a lofted attempt to clear the boundary landed in the hands of Ravi Inder Singh at mid-off.But Punjab’s misery was far from over, with Muzumdar, enjoying the Rohit show from the other end, closing in on the century with consecutive sweeps against Kakkar. Having cut Kakkar in front of square for another four, an emotional Muzumdar celebrated his maiden ton this season with a leap and a punch in the air. He was doubly happy as his parents were at the ground to witness his big moment. Then as a gesture to thanks his team-mates, he simultaneously doffed his cap and bowed towards the Mumbai dressing room.At the other end, Abhishek Nayar, playing his first game of the season, crushed Punjab’s spirits further with an attacking half-century as he stitched a valuable partnership with Muzumdar for the fifth wicket. Though Muzumdar failed to carry on, trapped plumb going for a prod against Khanna, he had done enough to help Mumbai take the game out of Punjab’s reach.

Aston Villa: Jack Grealish set to join Man City next week

Manchester City are edging closer to signing Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Grealish links

Grealish has been linked with a move to the Etihad since March. Jim White went as far as saying last month that a £100m deal was close to completion, however, as we know, the 25-year-old is still a Villa player.

The attacking midfielder told friends last month that he is interested in a move to the Premier League champions.

Villa were confident of agreeing on a contract extension with Grealish, but it seems as if that has now changed.

The Latest: Source shares update

A Villa source informed Football Insider that the club accepts they are fighting a losing battle when it comes to keeping Grealish at Villa Park.

The report states a mega-money transfer to City is expected to go through ‘next week’ when he returns from holiday.

Grealish still has his heart set on joining Pep Guardiola’s side, with City believing they have made progress when it comes to agreeing on a fee for the midfielder.

The Verdict: Villa must act

Villa’s recruitment plan this summer has been with the idea that Grealish would be a part of Dean Smith’s side next season.

So, should a mega-money move to City go through, Villa will look to sign two creative players to replace Grealish, according to Gregg Evans.

It’s good to see that Villa would act and not rely on club-record signing Emiliano Buendia to be the creative force, so fans could be in for a busy few weeks, should Grealish depart.

'Homecoming' for Hong Kong's unknowns

As no less than nine of their squad were born in Pakistan, the 9th Asia Cup could well be mistaken as a homecoming of sorts for Hong Kong

As no less than nine of their squad were born in Pakistan, the ninth Asia Cup could well be mistaken as a homecoming of sorts for Hong Kong. And when Tabarak Dar, their captain, suddenly sized up the press conference and started answering questions in Urdu, the impression was only enhanced. Aftab Habib, their coach, also an ex-England international, is another with links to Pakistan. What it should not be mistaken for is a misplaced sense of loyalty, especially as their opening match is against the hosts. “Lots of our players have family here and links with Pakistan,” said Habib. “But they are qualified as Hong Kong players and we classify ourselves as Hong Kong players.”But after March 17, 2007, all minnows of the world have a right to hope of something, anything, against the mercurials of Pakistan. Inevitably, Habib was asked if he had seen the Ireland game. “Most definitely. Cricket is a funny game and we are optimistic and confident of doing well,” Habib said.Habib’s knowledge will be invaluable, having played with a number of Pakistan’s internationals. “I’ve played a lot of county cricket and so know a lot of Pakistan’s players from there. We have an indication of how to play against them.”But Ireland at least had a green pitch to take advantage of on that memorable day. Hell may freeze over before a similar pitch surfaces at Karachi’s National Stadium tomorrow. Still, Hong Kong, insists Habib, will be competitive.”We’ve got some good senior players. Our bowling has some good spinners, who will be our main threat and a couple of good seam bowlers. But we’re very excited to be here at the Asia Cup. We’ll compete against the two major teams and are looking forward to it.”They may be looking forward to tomorrow’s game more than the one after, however. “India is definitely much stronger than Pakistan currently. They are stronger in world cricket,” Dar ended, as good a way as any to rile up Pakistan ahead of tomorrow.

Rogers ton drives Derbyshire

Derbyshire became the third team in three matches to declare their first innings against Bangladesh A, Chris Rogers deciding enough was enough soon after he had brought up his century

A half-century from John Sadler and Dan Birch’s 40 also helped to propel Derbyshire to 298 for 6 after choosing to bat.The pick of Bangladesh’s bowlers was Mosharraf Hussain, who took 3 for 69 from 22 overs, while there was a wicket each for Dolar Mahmud, Rubel Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan. The visitors then lost two quick wickets, both of them to a Kevin Dean-Thomas Poynton combination. But from 12 for 2, Shakib and Junaid Siddique were mounting some resistance, to end the day 46 for 2.

Windass: Dele Alli should make Aston Villa move

Dean Windass has urged Dele Alli to prove his doubters wrong by linking up with Aston Villa.

Alli made just 29 appearances last season, with his minutes limited after failing to impress then-Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho.

Having played an integral part as England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Alli has been forced to watch the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 campaign unfold on television as his lack of Premier League action resulted in him no longer being considered by national team manager Gareth Southgate.

Alli has been overtaken by the likes of Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Champions League-winning Chelsea attacking midfielder Mason Mount and Arsenal playmaker Bukayo Saka in the race for a regular starting spot for England.

Jack Grealish has also made a telling contribution at Euro 2020 following an impressive campaign at Aston Villa.

Former Hull City striker Windass feels £100,ooo-a-week man Alli would benefit from walking away from Spurs, despite the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach, and joining forces with Grealish at Villa Park ahead of the new Premier League season.

Windass, speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, said: “The new manager might want to keep Dele Alli, but I don’t think Harry Kane will be staying so their main focus will be trying to get another centre forward quickly.

“I think Dele would fit in well at Aston Villa and he needs to start playing again. He needs to start being a bit more confident as well because it does demoralise you when you don’t play and the manager doesn’t rate you.

“If a manager doesn’t like you, they don’t like you. There’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to move on and prove to the manager that they shouldn’t have let you go. That’s what Dele Alli has got to do, I think.”

Celtic told to consider Danny Ward

Celtic are stuck in a hefty transition phase right now as their new manager Ange Postecoglou tries to repair the rubble of an arduous 2020/21 campaign.

Errors were rife in the Hoops defence while injuries and a lack of quality in the final third plagued what they’d hoped would be a season of ten in a row.

What’s the word?

This summer will witness a mass exodus at Celtic. No longer are Mo Elyounoussi, Diego Laxalt or Jonjoe Kenny at the club while Scott Brown has finally left for Aberdeen.

Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard are also potentially set for the exit door but it’s an area where the Bhoys are well stacked that arguably needs improving the most.

That happens to be in goal where Conor Hazard, Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain all made individual errors last term.

With that in mind, Charlie Nicholas has recommended Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward as a potential signing.

Writing in the Express this week (29/06/21), he said: “Celtic need a new number one because Vasilis Barkas is not the answer. I think they could solve this position with a good loan.

“I would suggest Danny Ward. He’s not getting regular football at Leicester City and has shown internationally he’s a reliable and solid keeper.”

A big upgrade

Coming into the summer, the idea that Ward would have been a good signing for Celtic would have been written off fairly quickly.

The Welshman hasn’t played a league game since May 2017, reduced to playing second fiddle to Kasper Schmeichel at the King Power Stadium.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

However, his form at the European Championships was nothing short of exceptional.

Wales managed to reach the last 16 of Euro 2020 but were beaten 4-0 by a dominant Denmark side.

Ward wasn’t at fault for any of those strikes, though, as he caught the eye with some fantastic performances during the group stage.

Speaking about his displays, former Leicester man Andy King commented: “He’s been one of Wales’ outstanding players in this tournament.”

King continued: “He’s been commanding, he’s come for crosses and his distribution has been excellent.”

What Celtic lacked last season between the sticks was a commanding and vocal presence. Barkas was arguably treated harshly after starting just twice following the New Year period but his exile from the side came after errors in European action.

Bain was hardly a pillar of solidity either. Like his Greek teammate, the Scot made a plethora of errors in Europe and was also questionable in the Old Firm derby a few months ago.

Alfredo Morelos skinned Scott Brown all too easily before firing a rampaging shot towards goal that went straight through the hapless ‘keeper.

Ward, however, is proven and reliable. Following the group stages of Euro 2020, only two other goalkeepers had made more than his 4.3 saves per 90 minutes.

The 28-year-old also ended the first stage of the tournament having prevented more xG (3.77) than any other stopper. The next best goalkeeper was Finland’s Lukas Hradecky on 2.27.

Judging by his performances this summer, Ward would be a superb addition to Celtic’s ranks. Ange Postecoglou must test the waters of former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers in the coming weeks and months.

AND in other news, Celtic open talks to sign £8.5m gem of the “highest quality”, Ange will love him…
