Victoria set off for Super Six convincingly

Victoria Club went well in their first match in Super Six when they trounced Young Pegasus by 58 runs at BNS ground today

Shahryar Khan29-Apr-2002Victoria Club went well in their first match in Super Six when they trounced Young Pegasus by 58 runs at BNS ground today. The club, stepped into its hundredth year in 2002, won the match quite convincingly after winning the vital toss in the morning. White ball and colored dresses were introduced for the first time in the history of Dhaka League today. In response to Victoria’s 237 all out from 48.5 overs, Pegasus were bundled out for 179. Victoria’s Kenyan recruit Thomas Odayo caused an early havoc in the Pegasus top order, removing three batsmen with the score on 40. Later, Hasanuzzaman and Jamal Faisal tried to consolidate by putting 41 runs from the next wicket, but, couldn’t came out off the damage.Jamal Faisal (56) made the highest total for his team, where Hasanuzzaman contributed with 20. Some good knocks from the tail provided by Mahbub Alam (21) and Mohammed Shahajada (20 not out) took Pegasus off to 179 when Sajjad Ahmed clean bowled the last man Saifullah Khan. Odayo chipped in with a haul of 3 wickets giving away only 23 from his 8 overs. Leg spinner Alok Kapali captured 3 for 41.Victoria lost Parvej Ahmed with the score on just 5, but Al-Sahariar (83), partnered with Jahangir Alam (29), put up a solid stand of 116 runs in the following wicket and the bulk of those runs came off Sahariar’s willow. The ace opener slashed 9 boundaries in his valiant innings before Mahbub eliminated him.Skipper Khaled Masud chipped in well while he made 39 off 52 deliveries, and Sajjad Ahmed came up with his cameo 28 off 27 in the sixth wicket. With these vital contribution, Victoria set up a fighting total of 237 and of course came on to the field pretty optimistically with their formidable bowling attack.Al-Sahariar was undoubtedly adjudged the man-of-the-match for his brilliant show with his willow. Umpires Nadir Shah and S. Mahbubullah operated the match where A.K.M. Ahsanur Rahman Mallik Rony acted as the scorer in this significant match.

Matabeleland report

The selectors announced a virtually unchanged side for the match againstMashonaland, which will now be played over the weekend of 19 to 22 April due to the postponement of the Australian tour

Derrick Townshend29-Mar-2002The selectors announced a virtually unchanged side for the match againstMashonaland, which will now be played over the weekend of 19 to 22 April due to the postponement of the Australian tour. 13 players have been named, with Mbangwa, now back from India, and Kenny returning and young Mupariwa moving to the Matabeleland Under 19 squad for the festival week in Harare. The side’s performance was measurably better in the match against theAcademy, more polished and professional and the team was probably unlucky not to come away with a victory. Although the performance was better there are still areas of concern, which when addressed correctly should bring better results. The correct balance of the side is still lacking and this leads to more pressure being put on certain players.Young Wisdom Siziba continues to impress as a batsman with excellentConcentration; his colleagues could learn from him and improve their batting skills. He is able to concentrate more on his batting ability without the worry of keeping wicket, another aspect of the game where he has potential, and this may prove fruitful in his future career.Debutant Stu Walker may be well satisfied with his debut, a good performance behind the stumps and a positive 44 in the second innings. Ewing continues to impress with bat and ball and again had a good match. Dabengwa, the ever-improving McKillop, Strydom – more with the bat than the ball – should all be satisfied with their contributions. Strydom, who has only just turned 18 and is showing his undoubted potential, threw away the chance of another century when playing a pull with his head in the air, to be comprehensively bowled, a stroke young players would have been castigated for.Of the remainder, Townshend, Mahachi and young Mupariwa had reasonable performances, but the continuing failures from Ryan King are of concern. He is a player with ability but maybe not the temperament to perform in the top echelons of cricket. Williams the captain is also short on runs and was unlucky to be run out when calling for a run which was on. He was run out when his partner, not wide awake to the situation, failed to respond.Norman Mukandiwa should relish the break of a few weeks to allow his niggling side injury to recover, as will Wisdom Siziba who has a badly bruised hand. The inclusion of both Mbangwa and Streak should see Matabeleland lift their game against Manicaland in Mutare on 5 to 8 April.

Elyounoussi could be used in Edouard deal

Southampton have been linked with a move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard in recent weeks and Saints CEO Martin Semmens should consider utilising Mohammed Elyounoussi in a potential deal to bring the French striker to St Mary’s this summer.

According to The Sun, Southampton have joined the race to sign the former Paris Saint-Germain marksman, who has been prolific during his time at Celtic.

Considering that the likes of Leicester City and Arsenal have also been linked with the 23-year-old ahead of the summer, it had seemed as if any move for Edouard would be an ambitious one by Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side – especially as he is currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, and the Austrian had previously suggested that the Saints will target players under £10m.

However, Southampton can offer Celtic something which other Premier League clubs can’t, as the Hoops are reportedly keen on making Elyounoussi’s stay a permanent one after he spent the last two seasons on loan at Parkhead.

The Norway international is currently valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt and has impressed during his time in Scotland, contributing 24 goals and 14 assists in 67 appearances.

Although Hasenhuttl has suggested that the winger will be given another opportunity to impress at Southampton ahead of next season, his current record of no goals or assists in 19 appearances suggests that he might not be able to cut it at Premier League level.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Therefore, Semmens should definitely consider using the “very dangerous” winger in a potential deal for the “magnificent” Edouard this summer, as it would significantly drive down his price and would perhaps encourage Celtic to sell to Southampton rather than one of their Premier League rivals.

The French striker has contributed 83 goals and 37 assists in just 168 appearances for the Hoops, so he definitely has an eye for goal, and he could be a superb option for Hasenhuttl in attack next season.

The Saints are already well-stocked in the wide areas, with the likes of Nathan Redmond, Nathan Tella, Theo Walcott, Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo all capable of playing there. By contrast, the only natural senior options Hasenhuttl has up front are Danny Ings and Che Adams, so Edouard would surely be a more valuable member of the Saints squad next season than Elyounoussi.

Therefore, if Southampton do want to sign Edouard this summer, they should at least consider sending Elyounoussi the other way for good.

Maddy puts Leicestershire in with good chance of victory

A career-best five for 67 from Darren Maddy has given Leicestershire a good chance of victory over bottom-of-the-table Northants in their CricInfo Championship clash at Grace Road

Neville Foulger14-Jun-2001A career-best five for 67 from Darren Maddy has given Leicestershire a good chance of victory over bottom-of-the-table Northants in their CricInfo Championship clash at Grace Road.Maddy, usually an opening batsman but being converted into a middle-order all-rounder this season, had never taken more than three wickets in an innings before. But on a day much more favourable to the batsmen, he emerged as Leicestershire’s star turn with his brisk medium pace outswing bringing him the wickets of Michael Hussey, Mal Loye, Graeme Swann, Kevin Innes and Lesroy Weekes as Northants were bowled out for 257.That left Leicestershire a victory target of 232 and they had knocked off five of the runs when bad light ended play for the day 25 minutes early. It was certainly a much more serene day’s play than on Wednesday when 20 wickets fell for 344 runs and brought pitch liaison officer Tony Brown to assess the situation. He had left by lunchtime perfectly satisfied that there was nothing untoward about the pitch itself as Northants cruised to 79 without loss in 27 overs.Hussey and Loye appeared to be in little trouble until Maddy came into the attack and removed them both in the space of eight balls. He clean bowled Hussey with a delivery which swung late and then had Hussey caught behind off a thin edge.A half-century from Russell Warren – only the second of the match – regained the initiative for the visitors, but he was dismissed in the last over before tea by Phil DeFreitas. That was a vital breakthrough for Leicestershire, and when DeFreitas struck again immediately after the interval by trapping David Ripley lbw they had their tails up. Maddy snapped up Innes and Weekes and Devon Malcolm claimed last man Jason Brown to put the home side in a winning position.Malcolm finished with three for 46 to bring his total of Championship wickets this season to 26 and Maddy had match figures of eight for 95.

Tottenham now set to interview Parker

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are now set to interview Fulham boss Scott Parker for the managerial vacancy – with chairman Daniel Levy specifically ‘thinking highly’ of the 40-year-old.

The Lowdown: Parker in the running…

Most recently, reliable Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold backed reports of Spurs eyeing Parker as a possible candidate for the managerial role.

Indeed, writing for football.london, he shared that Spurs have been keeping a close eye on their former midfielder entering into management since he took charge at Fulham.

Parker also has coaching history with the club having previously took charge of the Lilywhites’ Under-18s side.

The Latest: Spurs now set for Parker interview

Bringing the latest, Football Insider now share that Tottenham are set to interview him for the role in these coming days amid a big blow involving fellow managerial target Brendan Rodgers.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest/” title=”Tottenham latest…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is claimed that, while Spurs have now given up hope of appointing the Leicester boss, Parker remains very much on the radar and Tottenham are set to sit down and discuss his credentials.

Crucially, chairman Levy is an extremely influential admirer from the boardroom and and thinks ‘highly’ of the young manager – he is also believed to not be put off by Fulham’s relegation.

The Verdict: Parker a big risk…

One of his other admirers at Spurs, apart from Levy, is defender Ryan Sessegnon (on loan at Hoffenheim).

Speaking to talkSPORT, the 20-year-old defender waxed lyrical over Parker as a manager and claimed he would be a brilliant fit for the job in north London – calling him a ‘top coach’.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has also hailed Parker this season for his courageous brand of attacking football (Evening Standard), but his lack of experience managing a club the size of Tottenham makes the possible appointment a big risk.

Leicester handed Jonny Evans injury blow

Whilst Leicester’s Champions League hopes took a huge blow with their defeat to Newcastle United on Friday night, they were handed another damaging hit with an injury to a key player.

Having originally been in the line-up to face the Magpies at the King Power Stadium, Jonny Evans was withdrawn and was then spotted in the stands with crutches.

Whilst Brendan Rodgers has suggested that his medical staff will have to “see” regarding his availability going forwards, any potential absence would be a huge blow for the Foxes.

Since arriving from West Bromwich Albion three years ago, Evans has become a key figure at the King Power Stadium, and that has certainly been exemplified throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

He has made 28 appearances in the Premier League this term, helping the Foxes to record ten clean sheets as they chase down a position in the top four.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leicester-city-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-abraham-demrial-maddison-rodgers-mckennie” title=”Latest Leicester City news, transfer rumours and more…”]

His underlying statistics are also eye-catching. According to WhoScored, he has contributed 0.9 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 3.3 aerials per match in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, his 3.5 clearances per game in the league is only bettered by fellow centre-back Wesley Fofana.

Rodgers has always made clear his admiration for his fellow Northern Ireland native, labelling the 33-year-old as “top-class”.

His absence was certainly highlighted in Friday’s defeat to Newcastle. The Foxes produced an absolutely horrendous defensive showing, with a back three of Fofana, Caglar Soyuncu and Timothy Castagne struggling to keep the Magpies quiet.

Indeed, it was the first time that Leicester had conceded four goals in a Premier League game since a defeat to Bournemouth last season.

With Evans having been injured before Friday’s clash, Rodgers will certainly hope his absence is not too long, especially with the Foxes aiming to seal a place in the top four as well as having an FA Cup final on the horizon.

BCCI could be in for a pat on the back from Condon

The matchfixing saga has been one of the most long drawn andcontentious in the illustrious history of the glorious game we callcricket

Anand Vasu05-May-2001The matchfixing saga has been one of the most long drawn andcontentious in the illustrious history of the glorious game we callcricket. Although the worst has probably passed, there is still enoughhanging in the air to cause concern at the headquarters of theInternational Cricket Council (ICC). The interim report of the ICC’santi corruption unit says, apart from India, no country has takenserious steps to tackle matchfixing, reports Dawn, a Pakistaninewspaper. The Anti Corruption Unit (ACU), headed by Sir Paul Condon, recentlyhanded over the interim report to Lord Griffith, Chairman of the ICC’sCode of Conduct Committee. The Dawn newspaper however, does notexplain how it got access to a report that has not been made public asyet. In addition, the Dawn does not quote any sources.According to the Dawn, the interim report states that countries likeWest Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand were not actingdecisively, even though there was increasing evidence that playersfrom these countries were involved in misdemeanors of this nature. When Pakistan toured New Zealand recently, coach Javed Miandad allegedthat matchfixing was still very much prevalent. The ICC too, seems toagree with this, if reports in the Dawn newspaper are to be believed. One must also keep in mind a couple of aspects. These allegations weremade by a man who had just been sacked. Again, The Dawn is known tocut corners on occasion. Recently, the newspaper leaked a report bythe Pakistan manager for the tour of New Zealand. Soon after the Dawnreport went to press, the comments referred to were denied by theFakir Aizazuddin. What is crucial in the report is that Condon and his team have foundthat the fixing and betting is not driven by greed alone. The reportallegedly has concluded that ‘some players, umpires and officials areso deeply involved with the criminal element they cannot stop cooperating for fear of their lives and property’. This brings theunderworld firmly into the picture, something that has been the worstfear of the authorities thus far.Although it is too early to draw any conclusions, with the report onlybeing leaked and not officially released to the public, one can besure that it will be yet another eagerly awaited document. First, there was the King Commission report in South Africa, based on whichHansie Cronje was banned for life. Herschelle Gibbs served out a sixmonth ban and returned to international cricket while Henry Williamswas let off with a warning. Then there was the Qayyum Report in Pakistan that found severalplayers guilty of malpractice of the kind that involved betting andmatchfixing. Salim Malik was banned for life while several otherprominent cricketers were fined. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report rocked Indiancricket, and as a direct fall out, Mohammed Azharuddin and Ajay Sharmawere banned for life while Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar and Ali Iraniwere banned for a period of five years.Apart from India, Pakistan and South Africa, none of the other Testplaying countries have come out with comprehensive reports on theirinvestigations thus far. Although players like Alec Stewart ofEngland, Brian Lara of West Indies, Mark Waugh and Shane Warne ofAustralia and Arjuna Rantunga and Aravinda de Silva of Sri Lanka havefigured in various investigations, the matter has rested there. The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) conducted its own inquiry anddeclared both Warne and Waugh innocent of matchfixing. For the act ofproviding information to bookies, the pair was fined.Examining the evidence, it does not seem entirely improbable that theinterim report of the ICC has indeed stated what has appeared in theDawn. The same newspaper adds that the report will be made public onMay 23. When that happens, Indian cricket’s administrators could be infor a pat on the back from world cricket’s apex body. It may berecalled that Condon had a word of praise for the CBI inquiry and theinvestigation conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’sown watchdog K Madhavan during his visit to India last year.

Villa must re-sign Wolves star Adama Traore

Aston Villa must look to re-sign Wolves star Adama Traore this summer amid Lee Hendrie’s intriguing transfer claim.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, Wolves would be open to offers for the Spain international this summer after setting an asking price of around £70m for him last year.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Hendrie has suggested that Traore could be a real fit at Villa Park given his unique ability, and would suit the way Dean Smith likes to play.

The 43-year-old said: “I feel he would be a good signing, I really do. I just feel that with a wide man that’s got pace and ability and can put a decent delivery into the box, it would suit Dean’s style of play. Now whether or not he’d come to Villa is a bit of a big question, come back to Villa obviously because he was there beforehand.

“Yes, he’d be a great addition with his pace and strength. I feel he’s a player that’s built and got better since coming into the English game so, yeah, I’d have Traore all day in my side because he’s just direct and he is something that I feel would work well for Villa.”

Game-changer for Dean Smith

Hailed as “unplayable” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp following an impressive display against the Reds in January 2020, Traore also received praise from Graeme Souness, with the Sky Sports pundit saying: “He is now not only a winger anymore, he keeps the ball, holds the ball and sets up goals, obviously. That makes it so difficult, each ball you lose is 100 per cent a counter-attack and half a goal.”

As per WhoScored, his average of 4.2 dribbles per game in the Premier League this season ranks him as the most prolific dribbler in the top flight, while he also ranks in the top six for drawing the most fouls per game at 2.2.

Having an electric player like the £31.5m-rated Traore could be a real game-changer for Smith in giving his Villa side another potent attacking option to go along with the likes of Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-aston-villa-transfer-rumours-and-news-copy-copy” title=”Latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news”]

While Grealish could weave his magic with his close control and vision, and Watkins can shine with his hard running and finishing, Traore’s sheer pace and power would add a different string to Villa’s bow – and that could be devastating for the rest of the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Villa should unleash this academy starlet amid rumoured transfer interest in him…

Celtic keen to sign Laxalt permanently

Celtic are intent on signing AC Milan’s Diego Laxalt permanently at the end of the season, according to a report from Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph reported when the loan deal for the £57,000-a-week defender was struck back in October that Milan wanted a fee of around £9m to let him go for good.

Tutto Mercato claim that Celtic have been convinced by the Uruguayan’s performances and may now enter negotiations to drive down that price tag. A £9m deal would almost equal the club’s record outlay – they paid £9.27m to sign Odsonne Edouard from PSG in the summer of 2018 (via Transfermarkt).

How has Laxalt fared at Celtic?

Versatile left-back Laxalt has made 24 appearances this season and started all six of Celtic’s Europa League matches.

He has only scored one goal, but his numbers going forward are still reasonably good. He has averaged 1.1 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game; while going the other way, he boasts 1.7 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per 90 minutes (via WhoScored).

Although ex-Hoops striker Chris Sutton said Laxalt hadn’t done enough over the season as a whole to ‘warrant a big fee’, the Uruguayan’s former manager Neil Lennon raved about his performances at Parkhead.

As per Daily Record, the ex-Celtic boss said of the 28-year-old: “Diego has been an excellent addition, a superb asset to the squad…He’s aggressive in his play and in his passing. I’ve been absolutely delighted with him.”

Transfer Tavern verdict

Laxalt has been decent at Celtic, but unless they can convince Milan to significantly lower their asking price, they shouldn’t pursue this deal.

It would be reckless to nudge transfer records for a 28-year-old left-back in this market, particularly when they’ll have to come through three qualifying rounds just to secure Champions League group stage revenue.

In other news, Frank McAvennie is worried about this planned move.
